Running for Public Office Seminar 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct 29 Gamber Center, 4 SE Independence Ave Have you ever thought about running for public office? What are the expectations of running and serving an elected position? The Chamber is hosting a candidate panel of former elected officials to answer a number of questions regarding public office. This is a non-partisan panel that will not talk issues, but focus on the basic questions of running for and serving in public office. Contact Matt Baird for details at 816.524.2424.

Meet the Chamber’s New Director of Special Events Megan Gray joined the Chamber in September 2019 as the director of special events. She brings 10 years of event planning experience to the job. Prior to joining to the Chamber she had the pleasure of planning events at Cass Regional Medical Center, Webster University and Park University. As the director of special events her main responsibilities include planning Oktoberfest, Annual Gala and the Golf Classic, as well as many other events throughout the year. Megan is a Graduate of Northwest Missouri State University with a Masters in Business Administration. She also has 15 years floral design experience with the Blue Springs Hy-Vee Floral department.

2020 is Closer than You Think... The Chamber is once again producing the popular community calendar featuring images showcasing our great city. We’ll be printing 3,000 calendars and distributing them throughout the area, beginning at the Mayor’s Tree Lighting in November. Calendars offer a unique advertising opportunity because of the long shelf life and how they are displayed. Please note that ad space is extremely limited and will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis. If your business has a special event or anniversary you want to promote during a certain month, don’t delay in booking your space. Join us in celebrating all things Lee’s Summit and preparing for a great 2020. Deadline for all materials October 31. Contact Heather Thompson at hthompson@lschamber.com or 816.524.2424 for advertising information.

The Lee’s Summit Business Community Supports Students for National Manufacturing Day On October 4th, The Lee’s Summit Economic Development Council, Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce and several Lee’s Summit businesses will co-host students from four Lee’s Summit high schools for National Manufacturing Day. Students from Lee’s Summit High School, Lee’s Summit North High School, Summit Christian Academy and St. Michael the Archangel Catholic High School will participate in tours and demonstrations at three Lee’s Summit manufacturers. National Manufacturing Day is an annual national event intended to help fill a critical need for skilled technical workers. A National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine report predicts a shortage of nearly 3.4 million skilled technical workers by 2022 due in part to the emphasis on 4-year degrees and an aging workforce. National Manufacturing Day is supported by thousands of manufacturers nationwide. The goal is to change students’ and parents’ perceptions about modern manufacturing by showcasing the evolving technology and career opportunities. “What many people don’t realize is manufacturing today is not what it was 50, or even 20, years ago,” said LSEDC Director of Business Development, Tina Chace. “Employers these days are looking for highly-skilled individuals who can design, program and operate technology.” Lee’s Summit-based Polytainer’s, ULTRAX Aerospace and IPL Plastics will join manufacturers from across the nation to showcase the career opportunities available at their companies. This is the third year that the LSEDC has hosted the event.

Member News & Events Downtown Lee’s Summit Named APA Great Neighborhood The American Planning Association (APA) has named Downtown Lee’s Summit as one of four Great Neighborhoods on APA’s annual Great Places in America list, which starts the countdown to National Community Planning Month in October. “The beauty, charm, and culture of our great city is best exemplified in the heart of Lee’s Summit, our historic downtown,” said Lee’s Summit Mayor Bill Baird. “We are thankful for the vision of those past and present that invested their time, money, passion and talents to develop and implement a downtown master plan.” APA’s Great Places in America program recognizes the streets, neighborhoods and public spaces in the U.S. demonstrating exceptional character, quality, and planning—attributes that enrich communities, facilitate economic growth, and inspire others around the country. The Great Neighborhoods, Great Streets and Great Public Spaces of 2019 are places that are unique and exemplary in their success stories of revitalization, cultural identity, and strong community connection.

“The Great Neighborhoods recognized this year demonstrate the importance of planning in creating vibrant and sustainable communities,” said Kurt Christiansen, FAICP, APA president. “The success of Downtown Lee’s Summit celebrates the importance of a truly collaborative planning process between community stakeholders, business leaders and citizens alike.” In the late 20th century, declining investment in the downtown and growing sprawl led to high vacancy rates for Downtown Lee’s Summit. In response, business leaders and citizen advocates created a partnership that would lay the foundation for the city’s next 30 years of revitalization efforts. With an emphasis on preservation and reinvestment, the Downtown Lee’s Summit community has come together to prioritize long-term sustainability to bring the current vacancy rate down to zero percent. The community will come together to celebrate at 11 a.m. on October 26, at Howard Station Park at following the annual Boos, Barks & Badges Halloween Parade.

Country Club Bank Holding 15th Annual Coat Drive At Country Club Bank, they start with those that matter most: families, clients and members of the community–because when one thrives, we all do. Which is why they’re excited to host the 15th annual Coats for Kids campaign, designed to help warm the littlest hearts in our neighborhoods. Working with 13 public schools throughout Belton, Harrisonville, Lee’s Summit, Raymore and Peculiar, they are able to identify those children in need of a new warm winter coat and help them thrive throughout the coldest parts of the school year. Last year marked thier most successful year yet, with 451 children receiving new coats before the winter season. To date, they’re proud to have raised almost $70,000 and provided 3,150 coats to local children. If you would like to help in this effort, you may make a donation at any of their five financial centers in Cass County and Lee’s Summit. The funds raised will be used to purchase coats from local retailers to distribute to children in time for the winter months. For more information, call 816.968.1585.

Member News & Events continued... Hollis + Miller Partner Represents KC on National Award List Michelle Chavey, AIA, ALEP, partner and educational design director with Hollis + Miller Architects, has been selected to the Class of 2019 “40 Under 40” by Building Design + Construction—one of only two professionals in the Kansas City area to be named to the national award list. The honor recognizes the top young leaders of the commercial design and construction industry across the United States who have excelled not only in their chosen work fields but also in their service to their clients, their firms and the community. The magazine was the first publication to recognize buildings are created by teams, not just individuals, and works to “provide essential solutions that inspire Building Teams to design and construct great places for people.” Chavey is also one of only 251 people in the world to have earned the designation of Accredited Learning Environment Planner (ALEP) by the Association for Learning Environments. “We’ve all recognized firsthand the tremendous value Michelle brings to Hollis + Miller, but it’s nice to see the larger industry

taking notice,” said Kirk Horner, partner. “This recognition further demonstrates how Michelle’s work allows us to focus on enhancing learning through research and design—to deliver projects with the same personal passion educators bring to the classroom every day.” Currently pursuing a doctorate in education from Kansas State University, Chavey has worked on more than 200 school projects and recently won the Learning by Design Grand Prize Award for Olathe West High School from BD+C, and the Distinguished Service Award from A4LE. “This award is truly an honor, and I’m so proud to represent Hollis + Miller and the Kansas City region,” Chavey said. “I’ve always been drawn to educational projects because they give me an opportunity to create a lasting impact through the success of kids and communities.” In addition to her current role, Chavey also serves as president of the A4LE Kansas City chapter, and volunteers with AIA Kansas City, the Girl Scouts, and Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Devotion is mutual. Celebrating 25 years of caring for your loved ones.
