Straight Talk for Business Marketing Nearly 40 years ago, when asked about the secret of his success, corporate businessman and author Lee Iacocca’s answer was,”Talk to people in their own language. If you do it well, they’ll say, ‘He said exactly what I was thinking.’” So what happened? Did we lose our way within an increasingly artificial, commercial and fastchanging world we live in? Or, maybe “straight talk” has been hijacked by pop culture and political correctness, where words are chosen to create some sort of new reality. The fact is that the inclusion of new words and phrases into our language is increasing at an average rate of 4,000 every year. Therefore, it should be of no surprise that nearly two-thirds of individuals today feel that the messaging they’re exposed to doesn’t reflect their life or how they feel. This represents a great opportunity for marketers who figure out how to talk to them correctly and the greatest threat for those who don’t. So in the interest of straight talk, I’m going to provide a list of words which I believe are just as relevant today as they ever were. Words that never go out of style. Words that carry a distinct and compelling benefit that translate into a proven sense of why there’s no place quite like Lee’s Summit.

Meaningful Words & Phrases • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Good Morning Respect Caring Thank You Polite Resourceful You’re Welcome Inclusive Accessible Community Home Responsive Safety Volunteer Honest

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Fun Common Sense Sincere Family Close-Knit Optimistic Neighborly Real Growing Comfort Welcoming Energetic Security Charming Pride

On a side note, fortunately, these time-tested words are still in the dictionary for those folks who don’t live or work in Lee’s Summit.

Yours Truly,

James McKenna Community Brand Manager

Customer Service Advice Know who is boss. You are in business to service customer needs, and you can only do that if you know what it is your customers want. When you truly listen to your customers, they let you know what they want and how you can provide good service. Never forget that the customer pays our salary and makes your job possible. Be a good listener. Take the time to identify customer needs by asking questions and concentrating on what the customer is really saying. Listen to their words, tone of voice, body language, and most importantly, how they feel. Beware of making assumptions - thinking you intuitively know what the customer wants. The Lee’s Summit Chamber Ambassadors invite you to join them for a membership blitz during the month of October for the chance to win cash prizes. Each member that recruits a new member during the month of October will be entered into a drawing for an opportunity to win one of three cash prizes ($250, $150 and $100). Your name will be entered once for each new member you recruit. Your name will also be entered into our regular drawings for an opportunity to win $100 at the Chamber’s membership luncheons. The 2014 directory deadline is quickly approaching and the Chamber is offering special incentives for new members that sign-up during October including... • $25 enrollment fee is waived • Listed in the 2014 Membership Directory

Identify and anticipate needs. Customers don't buy products or services. They buy good feelings and solutions to problems. Make customers feel important and appreciated. Treat them as individuals. Always use their name and find ways to compliment them, but be sincere. People value sincerity. Appreciate the power of "Yes". Always look for ways to help your customers. When they have a request (as long as it is reasonable) tell them that you can do it. Know how to apologize. When something goes wrong, apologize. It's easy and customers like it.

• Immediate inclusion on website member directory, as well as Smartphone app.

Give more than expected. Since the future of all companies lies in keeping customers happy, think of ways to elevate yourself above the competition.

• Opportunity to take advantage of discounts on vision, dental and prescription insurance through our partnership with Humana

Get regular feedback. Encourage and welcome suggestions about how you could improve.

• Certificate for a free monthly membership luncheon$15 value • Certificate for a free set of member mailing labels $100 value • Opportunity to enter a drawing to receive one of three free black & white ads in the Lee’s Summit Journal Full page-$1920 value Half page-$980 Quarter page-$490 With benefits like this, recruiting new members is a piece of cake! Everyone is sure to “like” this deal! Fliers will also be available showcasing the benefits of joining the Chamber this month. Want help when you are out recruiting, contact Cathy Young, director of member services, at 816.524.2424 or cyoung@lschamber.com. page 6

Treat employees well. Employees are your internal customers and need a regular dose of appreciation. Thank them and find ways to let them know how important they are. adapted from about.com
