The Chamber’s Oktoberfest begins September 27, from 5–11 p.m. and continues September 28, from 10 a.m.–11 p.m. The festival is fun for the young and the young at heart. German meals are served in the Biergarten beginning Friday evening from 5–9 p.m. and Saturday evening from 4–9 p.m. Sports fan? Make sure to stop by the Sport-zelt (sports tent) sponsored by the Rob Ellerman Real Estate Sales Team and People’s Bank Home Loans, and catch up on all the big games. Three stages of entertainment are ongoing throughout the festival: The Main Stage, sponsored by Amtrak, The Children’s Stage, sponsored by Steppin’ Out-The Studio, and The Community Stage, sponsored by Farmer’s Insurance - Julie Gregory. Kids Street features face painting, pony rides, craft projects, Paradise Park Rootbiergarten and many other kid-oriented activities.
September 27 & 28 The juried Arts and Crafts Fair features artists displaying their original works in watercolors, oils, photography, sculpture, pottery, jewelry, paper fiber, glass and wood.

Director of Special Events Graduates from Institute for Organization Management Institute for Organization Management, the professional development program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, is pleased to announce that Chrissy Symes, IOM, director of special events, of the Lee’s Summit Chamber, has graduated from the program and has received the recognition of IOM. Awarded to all graduates of the Institute program, the IOM Graduate Recognition signifies the individual’s completion of 96 hours of course instruction in nonprofit management.
Since its commencement in 1921, the Institute program has been educating tens of thousands of association, chamber, and other nonprofit leaders on how to build stronger organizations, better serve their members and become strong business advocates. Institute’s curriculum consists of four weeklong sessions at five different university locations throughout the country. Through a combination of required courses and electives in areas such as leadership, advocacy, marketing, finance, and membership, Institute participants are able to enhance their own organizational management skills and add new fuel to their organizations, making them run more efficiently and effectively.
“Institute graduates are recognized across the country as leaders in their industries and organizations,” said Raymond P. Towle, IOM, CAE, the U.S. Chamber Foundation’s vice president of Institute for Organization Management. “These individuals have the knowledge, skills, and dedication necessary to achieve professional and organizational success in the dynamic association and chamber industries.”
“Chamber Institute, as we know it, has been invaluable to me and my peers across the country,” said Chamber President Nancy Bruns. “Our Chamber is fortunate to now have five graduates of the Institute program on staff. It takes dedication and commitment to our profession to complete the course and we are proud of Chrissy for this accomplishment.”

How many times have you been asked “What exactly do you do?” It’s generic and it makes people crazy. Trying something different like “What’s the best part about your job?”, allows the respondent breathing room to answer outside the box. Be curious about people’s story and they will be much more likely to open up. Make sure that you leave behind the “how-soon-can-I-leave” mantra and relax. Uncross your arms, make eye contact and enjoy yourself. When networking, it is important to focus on the relationship with that person rather than strictly a business transaction. No one likes talking to a pushy salesperson. It’s ok to talk about the Royals’ non-last-place standings or what’s going on around town. Tell people about your work like a story – the more details the better! But leave the super fancy words that no one understands behind and engage the people you are talking with. They may nod their head with an “mmhmm” every now and then, but they may be thinking about what’s for dinner. Make sure you tell them something that will stand out and make them remember you, in a good way. Part of leaving behind a good impression is a nice business card. Make sure you a card on you, and also avoid the mega cheap-looking cards. However, make sure not to fall into the trap of the business card sprinkler. Networking is not a contest to see who can hand out the most cards at an event, it’s about building strong relationships. Networking experiences come and go, but make sure to practice telling your story so you can enjoy yourself, and your new connections, at your next event. article adapted from about.com
