Downtown Lee’s Summit Drei zwei eins...the countdown to Lee’s Summit’s Oktoberfest begins! Grab your lederhosen and dirndl and head to Downtown Lee’s Summit to join 70,000 festival goers for this fun fall festival. This year’s Chamber Oktoberfest runs from 5–11 p.m. Friday, September 25 and continues 10 a.m.–11 p.m. Saturday, September 26. The carnival remains open from 1–5 p.m. Sunday. The festival is fun for the young and the young at heart. Enjoy Kids Street, arts and crafts, authentic German meals, beer and brat tents, Biergarten, carnival, continuous live entertainment, dog and baby contests, Rootbiergarten, German dancers and much more. Oktoberfest would not be complete without the excitement and entertainment in the Biergarten. The Biergarten is the place to hang out for food, music, dancing and a lot of crazy fun! German meals are served in the Biergarten from 5–9 p.m. Friday and 4–9 p.m. Saturday. Sports fan? Make sure to stop by the Sport-zelt (sports tent) sponsored by the Rob Ellerman Real Estate Sales Team and Prime Lending, a Plains capital company, and catch up on all the big games. You may be lucky enough to catch our boys in blue in a playoff game! Three stages of entertainment are ongoing throughout the festival: the Main Stage sponsored by McCarthy Chevrolet, the Children’s Stage sponsored by Steppin’ Out-The Studio and the Community Stage, sponsored by Sky Zone Trampoline Park.

Chamber Past Chairs Ride in Celebrate 150 Parade The Chamber participated in the Celebrate 150 Parade on August 1 in honor of Lee’s Summit’s sesquicentennial. The parade started at Lee’s Summit High School, moved through Downtown Lee’s Summit and returned back to the high school. Past chairs of the Chamber board rode on the float, waving and passing out candy to onlookers. A special thanks to our past board chairs and Dave Cross Motors and Flooring & More for helping us make this float possible!

Donation Made to Developing Potential, Inc. Thanks to everyone who participated in the 2015 Chamber Getaway Raffle as part of this year’s Chamber Golf Classic. A portion of the proceeds raised during the raffle was donated to Developing Potential, Inc. New Teacher Breakfast Nearly 100 new teachers were welcomed to the R-7 School District during an Aug. 7 special event hosted by the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce and the University of Central Missouri Lee’s Summit. The Chamber has hosted the annual New Teacher Welcome Breakfast for several decades. During the event, teachers heard from Vicky Cundiff, chair-elect of the Chamber board; Lee’s Summit Mayor Randy Rhoads; Vicki Orcutt, University of Central Missouri; Dr. David McGehee, R-7 superintendent; and Linda Anderson, MCC-Longview and Chamber Education Committee chair. Beth Files, a teacher at Summit Lakes Middle School and Lee’s Summit R-7 2014 Teacher of the Year, was the featured speaker at the breakfast. Following the breakfast, the new teachers received “goodie bags” filled with gifts donated by approximately 30 Chamber businesses.

Join the Chamber in Washington, D.C. In place of the Chamber’s annual trip to Washington, D.C., the Chamber has been invited for a Missouri DC Fly-in. Join us for the inaugural group of Missouri delegates of the MO Chamber Advocacy mission to Washington, D.C. October 7-9, 2015. The Missouri delegation will meet with members of the Missouri congressional delegation and discuss in person the federal issues impacting Missouri’s business community. Planned events include a welcome reception at the United States Botanical Garden, as well as a legislative and issues update. You also can dine at the International Spy Museum. The registration cost is $399 per person. Delegates are responsible for making their own airfare and hotel arrangements. As info for airline reservations, plans are to begin at 6:30 p.m. with the reception, which includes heavy hors d’oeuvres and an open bar. On Friday, visits with Congressional reps should wrap up around noon. Brian Hutchin is the community bank president at UMB Bank in Lee’s Summit.

In addition to serving on the board of directors, Lesley supports the Chamber through functions such as Oktoberfest, the Annual Gala and the annual Chamber Classic Golf Tournament.
