Tobacco 21 is Approved

HOP ON BOARD! The Chamber’s moving full steam ahead New members recruited in October will receive special perks: •

$25 enrollment fee waived

Free monthly membership luncheon–$20 value

Free set of current member mailing labels–$100 value

Inclusion in printed and online directories, and the Chamber’s mobile app

Healthcare advocates and members of the Health Education Advisory Board (HEAB) were pleased as the City of Lee’s Summit became the latest community to approve Tobacco 21 – raising the legal age to purchase and sell tobacco products to 21 within the City. The amended ordinance, which becomes effective on Dec. 1, 2016, will limit the sale and purchase of tobacco products, alternative nicotine products and vapor products to those 21 years of age and older in Lee’s Summit. The amended ordinance does not change the current law, which states it is unlawful for any person under the age of 18 to knowingly possess or use any tobacco products. “To put it simply, passage of the Tobacco 21 ordinance will result in a healthier Lee’s Summit community. The National Institute of Medicine predicts that Tobacco 21 ordinances will result in a 25 percent drop in the number of young people who start smoking, and a 12 percent drop in overall smoking. This will have a tremendous public health benefit and will save lives here in Lee’s Summit,” said Dr. Ed Kraemer, physician. For more info, visit cityofLS.net.

CYP Night at the K Join young professionals from multiple area chambers for a fun night out at the ballgame. Chamber members and guests ages 21-35 are invited to participate in a tailgate and Royals game on Thursday, Sept. 29 (it’s buck night!). Deadline to register is September 9. Contact Stephanie Kusek, skusek@lschamber.com, with questions.

We’re here to help. Recruiters will be entered into a drawing for $300, $200 and $100, as well as the $100 drawing at the monthly luncheon. 300 SE 2nd Street Lee’s Summit, MO 64063 trumed.org/lakewoodcounseling

Web Design and Development Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Search Engine Marketing (SEM) Mobile Marketing Social Media Marketing Brand Management Review Alerts

Building Brand Charisma Jim McKenna, Community Marketing Director Building brands used to be about creating messages that would endure through the years. Those days are over. In today’s hectic, ever-changing world, brands can become irrelevant if we don’t continue to revitalize the message by facilitating their evolution to reflect changing consumer attitudes, desires and lifestyle. Research helps keep you ahead of the competition by analyzing and interpreting the forces shaping consumer behavior so that you can present your business in the best possible light. Research helps fine-tune your message, ensuring it stays relevant. Great brands, brands which define their category, convey a single distinct virtue separating them from others within the category. That distinction must resonate with the target audience, making it capable of influencing and inspiring large numbers of people. Your brand makes contact with your target audience via a range of touch points that help you keep your brand relevant in the hearts and minds of your customers. As a working example, I’ve used one of the Top 100 Global Brands…Apple. Because sometimes it’s easier for us to be objective if we look at the power of engagement beyond our own product or service. Target Audience: This refers to your prime prospect. That is, who is most likely to engage in the product or service your business offers? For Apple, a blend of individuals interested in well-designed, extra-functional, relatively easy-to-use products. Positioning: The position your brand occupies in the minds of your consumer. Strong brands represent a clear, single virtue resonating with your audience. At Apple, they believe technology doesn’t have to be intimidating or frustrating. Target Audience Reassurance: A statement that provides the target audience with some validation (emotional) that what you’re saying is indeed true. Apple makes it easier to use electronics, so you’ll feel smarter and on the leading edge of technology, no matter who you are. Brand Character: Human qualities that help you put a face on your product, place or service. Apple’s character is simple, stylish, user friendly, cool and innovative. Most great brands were created to solve a rational problem in its customer’s life. That’s what makes them category leaders. So ask yourself, what is your brand’s character? What’s that single distinction setting you apart from the rest? Figure that out and you’re on the right path for great marketing.

Member Events & News Lee’s Summit R-7 School District Names Interim Superintendent Dr. David Benson was named Lee’s Summit R-7 School District interim superintendent for the 2016-17 school year, according to an Aug. 16 announcement from the district’s Board of Education. “We feel very fortunate to have someone of Dr. Benson’s caliber in the interim superintendent position and believe he brings the skills, knowledge and experience that are needed to lead our successful school district during the coming year,” said Bob White, Board of Education president. Dr. Benson has a total of 43 years of experience in education that includes serving as a superintendent of highperforming school districts in Missouri, Kansas and Iowa. He has been recognized as Kansas Superintendent of the Year and has received the National Education Association Award for Outstanding Labor Management Relations, the Missouri School Public Relations Association Administrator of the Year Award and the Kansas School Public Relations Association Communicator of the Year Award. Dr. Benson will serve in this position from Sept. 1 through June 2017. The Lee’s Summit R-7 Board of Education members are also working on the search for a permanent superintendent to be named later this school year. The Board’s timeline calls for the permanent superintendent to begin working for Lee’s Summit R-7 in summer 2017. “I am pleased to have the opportunity to serve the students, faculty, staff and community of Lee’s Summit R-7 and look forward to a great school year,” said Dr. Benson.

Dr. Benson retired from the Cedar Rapids Community School District in June 2015 after serving as superintendent for six years. He also served as superintendent of the Ladue School District for five years, as superintendent of the Blue Valley School District for 11 years, as superintendent of the Fort Madison Community School District for six years and as superintendent of Unified School District No. 305 in Moundridge, Kansas, for four years. He earned his bachelor’s degree in secondary education (sociology and history) and master’s degree in secondary education, both from Pittsburg State University; his specialist degree in school administration from Wichita State University; and his doctorate in educational administration and foundations from Kansas State University. Dr. Benson has been active in the community for many years, including through organizations such as Rotary, Chamber of Commerce and United Way. He has also written articles for Midwest Express, Workforce and Scholastic Administrator. The Board of Education accepted applications for the interim position during late July and interviewed candidates on Aug. 2 and 9 during closed session meetings. No candidates currently employed by the R-7 School District applied for or were interviewed for this position due to the timing of the job opening and the need for existing staff members to fulfill other responsibilities within the school district. Dr. Benson’s contract for the position was approved by the Board of Education during an Aug. 16 special meeting. The interim superintendent’s compensation package will total $225,000 for the 10-month period.

Lee’s Summit Subaru Raises Money for Local Nonprofit

On Aug. 12, Lee’s Summit Subaru presented local nonprofit Hillcrest Transitional Housing of Eastern Jackson County with a donation of more than $13,000. The proceeds came from the dealership’s annual “Share the Love” event. Hillcrest Transitional Housing offers homeless families, singles & youth a disciplined educational program within a caring, supportive environment.

Returning by popular demand is Les Norman, host of “Breakin’ the Norm” ESPN radio show and former Royals outfielder. Rising from the ashes of poverty and childhood abuse, Les defeated the odds and rose to prominence by earning a Junior Olympic Gold Medal and playing major league baseball. Along with his weekly radio show, his no-nonsense, high-energy presentations inspire others to break through, push forward and become not just what they want to be, but what they never imagined they could be. Kick Off to Character is an annual event presented by Lee’s Summit CARES, a nonprofit community coalition providing programs for youth substance abuse prevention, parenting and character development. The 30-year-old nonprofit agency works to maintain a healthy and safe community for children, youth and families of the Greater Lee’s Summit area.
