Member News & Events Lee’s Summit Medical Center Announces New CEO Lee’s Summit Medical Center is excited to welcome John McDonald, FACHE as Chief Executive Officer on September 4. Since 2015, John has served as Chief Operating Officer at HCA’s Corpus Christi Medical Center, a 631 licensed bed, five-campus hospital system, with direct line responsibility for nine hospital departments and service lines in Corpus Christi, Texas. During his tenure at Corpus Christi Medical Center, John served as the primary administrator for Bay Area Medical Center and The Heart Hospital, both extensions of Corpus Christi Medical Center. During that time, Bay Area experienced rapid growth with a specific focus on oncology and bariatrics to better meet the needs of the community and physicians. To accommodate the accelerated growth, John facilitated the relocation of Corpus Christi’s largest oncology group to the Bay Area Campus and the hospital subsequently oversaw 22 percent growth in oncology admissions and 35 percent growth in radiation treatment. Prior to Corpus Christi Medical Center, John performed several roles at Universal Health Services in Amarillo,

Texas, and Northwest Texas Healthcare System. He designed and led the successful opening of a new 16bed Behavioral Health Unit; created a business plan and received approval to open a freestanding Emergency Department; designed and led the successful opening of a new 10-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit, which exceeded budgeted volumes by 36 percent in its first year of operation. Reflecting on joining the Lee’s Summit Medical Center family, John notes that during the interview process he was “deeply touched by the strong personal pride and conviction that the leadership team, board and physicians had for the hospital. It isn’t merely a place to work. The great reputation the hospital has earned both locally and nationally is because of the team’s authentic commitment to improving the health and wellness of the community. I look forward to collaborating with the leadership and employees and build upon the growth the hospital has experienced. Lee’s Summit is a growing community, and I envision taking the hospital to the next level by adding new services and expanding the services currently offered.”

Member News & Events continued... Wings 4 Water Event Expands to Downtown Lee’s Summit The Lee’s Summit-based nonprofit Wings 4 Water will host a wing competition in downtown Lee’s Summit as the NFL regular season begins. The event begins at 5:45 p.m. September 6 at Bridge Space. On Thursday, Sept. 6, competitors will boast their best chicken wings at the 2nd Annual Wings 4 Water event. Live music will kick off the event at 5:45 p.m. as guests try chicken wings from around 15-20 booths, voting with their money, all of which will support clean water efforts across the world. Shortly after the band wraps up at 7:15, the 2018 pro football season will begin. Last year’s event took place in Winterset where the concept was born. Eight competitors fed over 150 guests who voted with over $2,000. Last year’s proceeds went to World Vision’s clean water efforts in sub-Saharan Africa. This year, Wings 4 Water expects to have twice as many competitors, all of whom paid to showcase their wings at the event. Corporate sponsors include Lee’s Summit Chamber members Rejuvenate Mind-Body Wellness Center, the Van Osdol Law Firm, UMB Bank, Reinhart Foodservice and

NextGen Wealth Advisors. Individuals are also invited to participate in the competition. Reinhart Foodservice agreed to deeply discount 3,000 chicken wings, further increasing the amount of money that will be able to go to clean water efforts. “There are three key ingredients in our event’s recipe: a great community, a talented band, and, of course, amazing wings,” says Chris Turney, Chairman of Wings 4 Water. “We have found a way to mix those three good things together for a greater purpose.” While the public is invited to attend for free, guests are encouraged to vote for their favorite wings with money. All money raised from the event will provide basic life needs, such as clean water, to people locally and world-wide. Wings 4 Water is led and run solely by volunteers, which increases the impact of money raised from the event. For more information, follow Wings 4 Water on Facebook or send an email to Wings4WaterKC@gmail.com.

Two Character Events Planned for Sept. 14, 15 Featuring Keynote Speaker Dan Meers and a Neighborhood Picnic Join Lee’s Summit CARES’ Community of Character at their annual Kick Off to Character with guest speaker Dan Meers. This year’s event will be hosted by Summit Bank of Kansas City at 7:30 a.m. September 14, and includes a light breakfast. All Lee’s Summit businesses, entrepreneurs and community leaders are invited to attend. The Kick Off to Character is an inspirational event encouraging Lee’s Summit business leaders to promote character development. “Lee’s Summit CARES believes that when everyone is dedicated to upholding sound character, the community becomes a great place to live, work and do business,” states director Rachel Segobia. “Business leaders have the unique opportunity to impact hundreds of thousands of community members and are therefore imperative to our vision of creating a healthy and safe community for our youth.” Following the Kick Off, join Lee’s Summit CARES for a Neighborhood Picnic on September 15 from 11 a.m.–2 p.m. at Lea McKeighan North Park at 120 NE Chipman Rd.

Activities include lunch, face painting, pickle ball, sand volleyball and more. This event targets residents of the Downtown Lee’s Summit neighborhood and is designed to connect and engage neighbors. “Our data indicates that Lee’s Summit youth don’t have strong community supports. Lee’s Summit CARES’ Community of Character seeks to develop relationships and supports for our young people within the neighborhoods where they live, helping them grow and thrive,” says Segobia. Lee’s Summit CARES is a nonprofit community coalition that provides programs for youth substance use prevention, parenting and character development.
