Welcome to your

Students’ Union EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

#helloLSE

Welcome to LSE! FROM YOUR GENERAL SECRETARY Welcome to LSE and to LSE Students’ Union – undoubtedly the best Students’ Union in the country! I hope you’re excited to start studying, living, and socialising at our incredible university, whether you’re here for a year, three years, or even longer. LSE is unique. We are one of the most international universities in the country, with over 150 nationalities represented. Our internationalism is our strength, meaning our student community is vibrant and diverse. Use the next few weeks to speak to as many people as possible and start making the most of such a brilliant community. We are also one of the most active student bodies in the country. We are proud to have the highest voter turnout in our Students’ Union elections, the most eclectic and varied societies, and a strong sporting tradition where we compete and win nationally. Being a part of all the activities available at LSESU made my time while I was a student, and I hope it makes yours too. My one tip to you would simply be to make the most of your time here. Try new things, develop your intellectual curiosities, and invest in new friendships. LSE is a life-changing experience, but the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. I hope you join me in looking forward to an amazing year ahead – again, a wholehearted welcome to LSE and our Students’ Union. Get to know... LSESU societies Societies are the life and soul of LSESU. We are proud to have one of the most active student bodies, with thousands of students being members of more than 200 LSESU societies. Societies are groups set up by students who share a common interest and provide opportunities for you to meet new people, pick up skills for later life and make the most of your time at LSE.

from academic and political endeavours to celebrating culture, as well as more lighthearted interests such as music, dance and games. If you have an idea for a brand new society, let us know and we can help you set it up!

Whether you’re looking to take up a new hobby or want to keep up an existing interest, there really is something for everyone. Our 200 societies cover a wide range of activities,

“Last year, the LGBT+ Alliance was a fantastic way for me to get involved with my community and SU. I made so many good friends there and enjoyed it so much I even decided I wanted to be the President of it this year!” – Perdita Blinkhorn, 2nd Year Sociology’’

LSESU Media Group and RAG THE MEDIA GROUP LSESU boasts an active media group comprising four societies: a weekly newspaper, radio station, TV station and journal. Best of all, they are entirely studentrun and students are encouraged to get involved in all aspects of creating media – whether it’s through an editorial role, anchoring your own TV show or putting together a radio programme. The Beaver is our weekly newspaper, one of the oldest student publications in the UK. It publishes in print and online during Michaelmas and Lent Terms. Anyone with an interest in writing, editing, or taking photos is encouraged to contribute. Clare Market Review is a termly publication that has combined art and culture for over a century. Past contributors include Spike Milligan, George Bernard Shaw, and Bertrand Russell. LooSE TV brings together students with an interest in broadcasting and anyone interested in acting, editing, filming and producing. PuLSE Radio is the sound of LSE, broadcasting 24-hours a day with
the hottest music, student news and highpowered debates and gossip. It’s perfect

online listening for those late nights socialising or studying. All the LSESU media societies are brought together in the purpose-built Media Centre on the 2nd Floor, Saw Swee Hock Student Centre. Members can access an incredible range of facilities, including DJ booths, recording equipment and high-spec computers. Find out more about the LSESU Media Group: www.lsesu.com/join-in/media-group

RAISING AND GIVING Raising and Giving (RAG) is the fundraising arm of the Students’ Union, raising over £100,000 for charity last year alone. Team RAG is one of the biggest groups on campus and anyone can get involved! RAG members spend most of the year running a huge programme of challenges and events, with everything from Kilimanjaro treks and hitchhikes across Europe to your RAG Pack Welcome Week club nights. RAG also facilitates and supports other student fundraising on campus, whether you’re part of a society, club or organising something yourself. For more information on RAG, head to: www.lsesu.com/join-in/rag

Activities tips FROM YOUR ACTIVITIES AND DEVELOPMENT OFFICER Hi, I’m Katie Budd, your Activities and Development Officer. Here are some leads for exploring what else is on offer to you, once you’ve joined all the societies and clubs your heart desires! 1. Run a campaign: If you’re passionate about changing something on a local, national or global level, then run or support a campaign. Last year, students led campaigns on everything from fossil fuel divestment to white privilege. Link up with other students and head to the Activities Resource Centre (ARC) for lots of support. 2. Volunteer your time: RAG are always looking for eager volunteers to help at their events or to shake a fundraising bucket on campus, and it’s good fun too! The LSE Volunteer Centre also offers endless opportunities to broaden your horizons. 3. Get rewarded: By leading student projects, running a big campaign or lobbying your LSE department as a Course Rep, you can get yourself recognised with the LSESU Leadership Accreditation programme. AND there’s an end-of-year awards night! Say hello if you see me on campus or get in touch. Katie Budd, Activities and Development Officer su.activitiesdevelopment@lse.ac.uk LSESU Activities and Development Officer: Katie Budd @klebudd

Get to know... LSESU sport THE ATHLETICS UNION (AU) The Athletics Union is for anyone interested in playing sports, at any level. Over 3,000 LSE students currently represent the School across more than 40 clubs, and by joining a sports club, you become a member of the AU community. There is something for everyone, from beginners with an interest in trying something new, to competing in the British University & College Sport League (BUCS) and London Universities Sports Leagues (LUSL). The AU also runs legendary Wednesday night socials at our LSESU Venue and Zoo bar. Once you’ve decided which club is for you, the annual AU membership is £30, while annual club memberships cost between £5 and £30. Join at the LSESU Welcome Fair on Thursday 24th–Friday 25th September, or online over at: www.lsesu.com/join-in/sports

LSESU ACTIVE LIFESTYLE LSESU runs drop-in classes for students keen to stay active between the rush of

classes and deadlines. If you like the sound of low-cost or free non-competitive classes in bellydancing, fencing, and yoga or 5-a-side football tournaments, our Active LifeStylE programme is made for you! Find out more about LSESU Active LifeStylE: www.lsesu.com/activelse

For more information about LSESU Gym membership, opening times and to join, head to: www.lsesu.com/gym

“What do I like about being part of the AU? Love the girls, love the sport, and I will cherish the memories we’ve made forever. My sports club, Women’s Rugby, has transformed my time at LSE and is hands-down my favourite aspect of university life.” – Rochelle Silva, 2nd Year Law

Give It A Go

Give It A Go is a programme of taster sessions which gives you the chance to try out our sports clubs and societies with no commitment. There’s a range of great activities to try, from Jiu Jitsu to ultimate frisbee, and from baking to gaming. You don’t need any experience to take part and you’ll get firsthand knowledge of which club or society is for you.

HOW DO I SIGN UP? All sessions are run on a first come, first served basis, so it’s worth reserving a place if

you can, and turning up a little early. If you’re heading to an exercise class or sports activity, don’t forget suitable footwear, clothes and a bottle of water! Please let us know ASAP if you are no longer able to attend a session that you have booked by emailing: su.arc@lse.ac.uk If a session is cancelled, you will be informed by email (as long as you have signed up to it). For the full Give It A Go schedule and the most up-to-date info, visit: www.lsesu.com/whatson

ACCESSIBILITY LSESU is committed to making activities accessible for everyone. If you have any individual requirements, please let us know in advance of the session so that we can do our best to accommodate your needs.

Should you have any queries about any of the sessions we are running, please contact your Activities and Development Officer, Katie Budd: su.activitiesdevelopment@lse.ac.uk For more information about Give It A Go, visit: www.lsesu.com/activities/giag

HOW TO JOIN A CLUB OR SOCIETY Know what you want to join already? Sign up at www.lsesu.com/join-in or pop into the Activities Resource Centre (ARC) on the 1st Floor, Saw Swee Hock Student Centre, between 10am and 4pm, Monday to Friday.

Campaigns and democracy We are proud to be one of the most politically active and democratic Students’ Unions in the country. We are led by Student Representatives (also known as the Executive Team) who ensure that you get the opportunity to make changes within LSESU, the School and wider society.

ELECTIONS: RUN.VOTE.CHANGE. LSESU is run by students, for students – meaning that you are personally invited to influence what we do (i.e. everything listed in this guide and much more). Voting for your Student Representatives in the LSESU elections, which take place twice a year, is a great opportunity to do this. You might also want to join a campaign team – or even stand as a candidate yourself! Michaelmas Term (first term) elections allow you to elect a Postgraduate Students’ Officer, a Postgraduate Research Students’ Officer and a Mature and Part-time Students’ Officer, along with NUS delegates and representatives on School boards and committees. Nominations for Michaelmas Term elections are open between 10am, Monday 12th October and 5pm, Monday 19th October. Voting opens online from 10am, Wednesday 28th – 7pm, Thursday 29th October – make sure you follow LSESU online for all the latest information.

Lent Term (second term) elections are your chance to elect the full-time Sabbatical Officers, Liberation Officers, and other Part-time Officers – why not run for a position you’re passionate about as well?

CAMPAIGNS LSESU has a proud tradition of standing up for student rights and actively campaigning about the local, national and global issues that affect its members. As an LSE student, you can bring about change on campus and in the wider world – and the Students’ Union offers the campaign training, resources and support needed to make that change happen. So far this year, our campaigns have included fighting the Immigration Bill, defending international students’ rights by petitioning on the Post-Study Work Visa, and lobbying for exam feedback throughout LSE departments. Our biggest wins include a rent guarantor scheme for LSE students and an increase in scholarship support for international students in line with inflation.

We aren’t just active within the School: we are affiliated with the National Union of Students (NUS), which campaigns and lobbies on behalf of more than 7 million students in the UK. If you want to find out more about elections, democracy or campaigns at LSESU, check out: www.lsesu.com/ yourunion

Tips for postgrads FROM YOUR COMMUNITY AND WELFARE OFFICER Hi postgrads! I’m Aysha, your Community and Welfare Officer, and I’m studying part-time for my MSc in Human Rights. Being a postgrad here can be a busy and demanding time. However, by organising a balanced schedule of self-care and studying, you will have a fulfilling LSE experience. 1. Master the art of healthy living: Increase mindfulness and reduce stress with the LSESU Gym’s free Monday sessions, weekly yoga or the free postgrad-only meditation group – find out more: www.lsesu.com/wellbeing-project 2. Clubs and societies: Join one of our 240 societies and clubs, loads of which don’t need a commitment throughout the year. 3. Take a trip with your fellow students: Travel beyond London with Raising and Giving (RAG), Itchy Feet Society or organise your own weekend away to another part of the UK. 4. Get democratic: Make sure you vote for the Postgraduate Students’ Officer in the LSESU elections in Michaelmas Term – they’ll have your back for the year! Do say hello if you see me on campus or feel free to get in touch. Aysha Fekaiki, Community and Welfare Officer

“Don’t underestimate anybody. Be open-minded and avoid stereotypes. You will meet some of the smartest people in your life and I’m not talking about teachers, but students.”

Hi, I’m Carlos, and I was a postgrad here on the Public Administration and Government course last year. London is an amazing place and you really can have the best year of your life if you immerse yourself in the vibrant and diverse student body. Don’t underestimate anybody. Be open-minded and avoid stereotypes. You will meet some of the smartest people in your life and I’m not talking about teachers, but students. Dare to be quiet and listen! Learn from each other instead of competing. During exam time, avoid the LSE Library as it’s a focal point for socialising and becomes very crowded. Make sure you take time out to relax and be supported by friends, as this will help you get through the year.

Did you know?... We have a Postgraduate Common Room in 32 Lincoln’s Inn Fields. It’s a great place to hang out between classes and socialise.

Travelling around the UK or Europe during your first term is wise, as your exams come around pretty quick! If you want to go for a drink to relax after lectures, head to The Three Tuns student bar – it’s much cheaper than the George IV, which is traditionally seen as the postgrad pub. Off campus, central London has so much to offer, especially the huge variety of FREE art, history and science museums. There is so much you can do and it won’t cost you a penny. I hope you enjoy your time here. Carlos Saint-Romain, Postgraduate, Public Administration and Government

No issue is too big or too small, and because we’re independent from the School, we can represent you and your voice on campus. In the unlikely event that we can’t help, we’ll make sure you get to the people who can. The Students’ Union also provides several funds designed to help students through their time at LSE, including the LSESU Hardship Fund and the Childcare Fund. If you’re hoping to fit in some study time over a quick bite to eat, head to our Denning Learning Café on the 1st Floor for access to wi-fi, computers and printing facilities.

As evening approaches, you can buy the cheapest drinks on campus at The Three Tuns, LSESU’s student bar that offers a fun atmosphere to watch live sports and unwind with your new coursemates.

FREE SIGHTS AND ATTRACTIONS This city is home to many of the world’s greatest museums and art galleries – and most of them are free to visit. London’s parks are beautiful year-round – try Hyde Park for a regal experience, find a shady reading corner at Dalston Eastern Curve community garden, or head to vast Hampstead Heath for wild swimming.

There’s the handy Leather Lane Market in nearby Clerkenwell; sophisticated Borough Market on the South Bank; or fresh produce from around the world at rock-bottom prices over at Ridley Road Market in Dalston. Plus many more – for more details, see: www.timeout.com/london

Culture shock? What culture shock? We know that starting university is an exciting but challenging experience, especially when you move to a new place. But there’s absolutely nothing to worry about. First of all – you’re not alone. Over 70% of students at LSE hail from overseas – and even students from the UK need time to adjust to the LSE way of life. It’s normal to be homesick at first. Give yourself a couple of weeks to acclimatise; by the time term is underway, you’ll feel part of an incredible community. Here are a few tips to help you overcome culture shock:

EXPLORE LONDON’S FOOD SCENE London is essentially a multicultural city made up of vibrant villages. Each neighbourhood has its own atmosphere, its own diaspora – and its own specialty cuisine! Get a few like minds together and enjoy dim sum in Chinatown, U.S grills in Soho, pho in Hackney, Punjabi curries and Pakistani kebabs in Whitechapel, or south Indian thali on Drummond Street. We recommend searching www.timeout.com/ london for the world of options out there.

JOIN A CLUB OR SOCIETY Signing up to one of our 240 clubs and societies is THE quickest way to meet people who you share a common interest with. One way to develop your confidence is to join the society of a culture or nation that is

unfamiliar to you. You didn’t come to one of the world’s most global universities to only talk to people just like the ones you left at home, right?!

Study tips FROM YOUR EDUCATION OFFICER Hello all! I’m Jon, your Education Officer. I just graduated in BSc Government and History. The academic side of LSE can be daunting at first, but here are some tips to it a bit easier. 1. Get to know your Academic Adviser: You have a world-leading academic whose job is to support you, both academically and personally. Make the most of this! 2. Use office hours: Academics do want to talk to students, so make sure you go and speak to them. Office hours aren’t just for when you’re struggling. 3. Explore campus: There are loads of great study spaces at LSE. Make sure you meet your department’s Librarian and learn how to use the LSE Library effectively. See our LSESU Study Space Guide, available during Welcome Week and in the Activities Resource Centre (ARC), for loads of other locations on campus and across London. 4. Balance! Studying at LSE can be intense. While your studies are important, they aren’t the only thing. Join a club or society, develop your skills with our Beyond the Classroom programme, or take part in the LSESU Wellbeing Project. Time here goes really fast, so make it count! Say hello if you see me on campus or get in touch! Jon Foster, Education Officer su.education@lse.ac.uk LSESU Education Officer: Jon Foster @jrhysfoster
