WELCOME TO LSE Welcome to LSE! My name is Nona and I’m your General Secretary at LSE Students’ Union (LSESU) – an organisation comprised of, and led by, our students. Before I get onto that, I want to talk to you about the year ahead and why it will be a life-changing experience. Firstly, you’ve joined the most international university in the UK. At LSE, you have the opportunity to meet people from all corners of the world, learn about each other’s cultures and hopefully receive invitations to visit them! This experience is incredible, and Orientation is the best time to start forging some of these connections. Secondly, you’ve joined one of the most active and vibrant campuses in the country. We have more than 200 LSESU societies, from Beekeeping, to the United Nations Society, to RAG (Raising and Giving). My advice: attend their events, sign up for membership and do things you would never usually think of. We also have an incredible sporting life at LSE. With over 50 clubs here, there really is something for everyone – for students of all abilities. Go to trials, join in with the Athletics Union’s Wednesday night socials and make sport a part of your student experience at LSE.

And lastly, you’re joining a university where your alumni network includes Nobel Prize winners, leading politicians and, of course, YOU. Make the most of everything they have to offer, build new connections and use this time to find out who you truly want to be. You never know what doors may be open by the end of your time here. How does the Students’ Union fit into this? It’s your social life, your representation on issues that matter to you and, above all, YOUR organisation. We don’t just host Orientation – we campaign to get the best for you. We don’t just host club nights (which, by the way, are insane) – we celebrate our internationalism and put on cultural activities throughout the academic year. Most importantly, LSESU is for you and led by you. Come and say hello to me and your other Sabbatical Officers during Orientation, email or even tweet us. We want to know you and what you want out of your time at LSE, and hopefully we can help you achieve it. Have the best week and say hello to everyone you meet. Your LSE journey starts here! Nona Buckley-Irvine General Secretary LSE Students’ Union

LONDON ON A SHOESTRING LSE is located in the beating heart of one of the most vibrant, exciting, historical, influential and culturally diverse cities in the world. London has been called home by William Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Virginia Woolf, the Rolling Stones, the Queen… and now YOU! It’s easy to let costs add up when you’re a student in the city – but there are still ways to have fun and live well on a budget.

TRAVEL Get a Student Oyster Card – it gives you a 30% discount on Travelcard and Bus Pass season tickets. You can apply at any London Underground station or through the TFL website (www.tfl.gov.uk). If you’re planning on venturing outside of London, the 16-25 Railcard will save you 1/3 on rail fares throughout the UK – simply visit www.16-25railcard.co.uk to apply.

London’s Royal Parks are beautiful no matter the time of year and you’ll find hidden green spaces all over the city. The huge wilderness of Hampstead Heath is especially worth seeing! FOOD

NUS EXTRA NUS Extra is a student card offering you discounts from hundreds of retailers, restaurants and travel providers. The card costs £12 for one year and you can buy it through LSESU. Also, of that £12, £4 will go to your Students’ Union so that we can put more money towards activities, events and more – all for you! Get your NUS Extra card at the Freshers’ Fair in the Saw Swee Hock Student Centre on Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd October, or visit www.nus.org.uk to buy it online. CULTURE London is home to some of the best and most interactive museums and art galleries in the world, and most of them won’t cost you a thing to visit. Why not head to the British Museum for a day of culture, step back in time at the Natural History Museum, or discover your love for art and design at the V&A – all free of charge!

Food markets are the best way to fill up on free samples, and they make a great day out. Try Borough Market on the South Bank, or search online for a farmers’ market near your halls. When you’re on campus, Wright’s Bar sells what might be the cheapest coffee and sandwiches in London – they have to be tasted to be believed! HOUSING Finding somewhere to live in London can be difficult sometimes. If you have any problems with private accommodation, the LSESU Advice Service is here to help. Visit www.lsesu.com/ advice for more information. For more tips and information on student life in London, including cheap places to eat, student discounts and places to visit on a budget, check out lsesu.tumblr.com.

LSE LIFE HACKS Our amazing tips and tricks to make student life at LSE easy, simple and incredibly fun:

Eat outside at Lincoln’s Inn Fields, a beautiful park right on our doorstep at LSE. When it’s sunny, there’s no better place to enjoy a study break. Hanker down on Pieminister pies in the LSESU Denning Learning Café in the Saw Swee Hock Student Centre: top quality grub with mash, peas and gravy, all at incredible, student-friendly prices.

• •

At LSE you have access to the country’s top academics – make sure you take advantage of this opportunity by dropping in for a visit during office hours. It never hurts to start thinking about the next step, and a good way to focus is by joining a careers society. But don’t feel you need to take it too seriously just yet. The best thing about university is discovering who you are and what interests you: there’s no pressure to lock down the next 20 years. Get involved with LSESU RAG – raise money for a good cause and gain some amazing life experiences like hitchhiking through Europe. Experience an LSE department social – a great opportunity to bond with your coursemates as well as break down barriers between undergraduates, postgraduates and staff. Get active by joining a sports club or the new LSESU Active LifeStylE programme. You’ll meet loads of new people, and as our clubs cover all athletic abilities, you don’t even need good hand-eye coordination! Get involved in a Students’ Union campaign or debate. LSE is one of the most politically active universities in the country and this is your chance to make a difference and get passionate about the issues that affect you. Join the society of a culture or nation you haven’t engaged with before. One of the best things about LSE is the wealth of different cultures you have access to; normally you have to pay for a long-haul flight to get that sort of insight, so make sure you don’t let the chance slip past. Finally, have a study session on the 8th floor of the New Academic Building… just trust us on this one.

COMING FROM OUTSIDE THE UK? We know starting university can be scary, especially if you’re in a new country. But there’s absolutely nothing to worry about. International students are a huge part of LSE (did you know that 70% of students at LSE come from outside the UK?) and we have loads of facilities to make sure everyone feels welcome when they start. It’s normal to be homesick at first, but if you think of it as a two-week project – and focus on getting involved, making friends and staying busy – you’ll be fine. In the meantime, we have loads of support, tips and activities to help you settle in:

JUMP IN There are so many clubs and societies to get involved in, and they love having new members. To start exploring, head to www.lsesu.com or pop along to the Freshers’ Fair in the Saw Swee Hock Student Centre on Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd October.

TALK TO US Support is here if you need it. Your Community and Welfare Officer, Sebastian Bruhn, and your International Students’ Officer, Indo Vickerson, can help with any problems, questions or queries you might have, so be sure to get in touch.

MAKE NEW FRIENDS Tea and cake have brought people together for centuries! Come and say hi to other international students at the Tea Party for International Students on Tuesday 23rd September – check out www.lsesu.com/whatson for full details. FIND YOUR WAY AROUND You can take a guided tour of the LSE campus with your Students’ Union on Friday 3rd October (see www.lsesu.com/whatson for more information), or if you want to familiarise yourself now, search the LSE website (www.lse.ac.uk) for the virtual tour.

SOCIETIES

Societies are the life and soul of LSE Students’ Union. We are proud to have one of the most active student bodies in the country, with thousands of students getting involved in more than 200 LSESU societies and sports clubs. Societies are groups of students who share a common interest. They provide opportunities for you to meet new people, to develop key skills for your future career and, above all, to make the most of your experience at LSE. Whether you’re looking to take up a new hobby or want to keep up an existing interest, there really is something for everyone: our 150 societies cover a wide range of activities, from academic endeavours to cultural celebrations, as well as more lighthearted interests such as music and dance. If you have an idea for a brand new society, let us know and we can help you set it up. The Freshers’ Fair is your best opportunity to join a society, so make sure you head to the Saw Swee Hock Student Centre on Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd October. You’ll also be able to join societies after the Freshers’ Fair either online at www.lsesu.com or in the Activities Resource Centre (ARC) in the Saw Swee Hock Student Centre. All of our societies are student-led and membership costs as little as £1.50.

SPORTS AND THE ATHLETICS UNION

Everyone who joins a sports club at LSE becomes a member of the Athletics Union. The Athletics Union (AU) is the heart of sporting life at LSESU and aims to provide opportunities for you to play sports, regardless of your ability. Over 2,500 of our students currently participate across more than 40 clubs representing the School, and we have some incredible athletes playing at all levels of competition. Outdoor or indoor, team or individual, competitive or leisure – whatever you’re into, we have a wide and diverse range of sports clubs for you to get involved in. Each club has its own committee which works with the Athletics Union Executive to ensure that more LSE students have the opportunity to get involved, whether you’re looking for top flight BUCS (British University & College Sport League) or LUSL (London University Sports League) action, or simply want to enjoy the social side of the AU.

SPORTS CLUBS Aerobics Athletics, Running & Triathlon Badminton Basketball (Men‘s) Basketball (Women’s) Capoeira Cricket Dance Darts Floorball Football (Men‘s) Football (Women’s) Golf Handball Hockey (Men‘s) Hockey (Women’s) Horse Riding Jitsu Judo Kabaddi

Karate Kitesurf/Wakeboard Lacrosse Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Netball Pole Fitness Rock Climbing Rowing Rugby (Men‘s) Rugby (Women’s) Shooting Snowsports Squash Surf Table Tennis Tae Kwon Do Tai Chi Tennis Ultimate Disc Volleyball Yoga Zumba

COMPETITIVE SPORT We offer a wide range of competitive sports, from football and badminton to ultimate frisbee and mixed martial arts. Our teams train and compete in and around LSE – we have seven football pitches, two rugby pitches and two netball courts at our main sports grounds in Berrylands (located just 20 minutes from Waterloo by train), as well as our on-campus facilities such as the LSESU Gym, squash, basketball and badminton courts, and our brand new Exercise Studio. Our 80+ teams compete in two leagues in and around London, BUCS and LUSL. The majority of fixtures take place on Wednesday afternoons, so be sure to keep them free.

RECREATIONAL SPORT If competitive sport isn’t for you, watch out for the launch of our brand new LSESU Active LifeStyLE programme, supported by Sport England. Active LifeStylE includes semi-competitive intramural leagues, drop-in sessions for activities such as running or swimming, sports courses, as well as 22 one-off festivals of sport to celebrate commemorative dates, including pancake flipping races on Shrove Tuesday, UV Sports on Guy Fawkes Night, and American football taster sessions leading up to the Super Bowl. The Freshers’ Fair is your best opportunity to see what’s on offer and talk to club executives. You can sign up for trials across a number of our men’s and women’s teams, take part in Give it a Go! sessions, or find out more about the Active LifeStylE programme. After the Freshers’ Fair, you’ll be able to join sports clubs online at www.lsesu.com or in the Activities Resource Centre (ARC) in the Saw Swee Hock Student Centre. Annual AU membership is £30, while club memberships cost between £5 and £30. If you would rather join Active LifeStylE, you will need to sign up and pay for regular leagues and classes with prices ranging from £1 - £20.

AU SOCIALS The AU Executive organises a social every Wednesday evening during term time for anyone who takes part in competitive or recreational sport

at LSE. The AU social calendar includes Party in the Park, Easter Foreign Tour, Mr LSE, the AU Ball, Fight Night and a fancy dress extravaganza before Christmas known as the ‘AU Carol’.

ACTIVITIES RESOURCE CENTRE The Activities Resource Centre (ARC) in the Saw Swee Hock Student Centre is our brand new hub for sports clubs and student societies. In the ARC we offer all the facilities you might need to join, set up and develop your own societies and clubs. If you’re looking to get the most out of your time at LSE, the ARC is the place to go.

MEDIA GROUP AND RAG Russell. Published once a term, it represents the provocative voice of LSE students. LooSE TV brings together everyone with an interest in making TV or films with students acting, editing, filming and producing all of their videos. PuLSE Radio is the sound of LSE, broadcasting 24-hours a day with the hottest music, student news, and high-powered debates and gossip. It’s perfect online listening for those late nights socialising or studying. The LSESU Media Group has been brought together into one purpose-built Media Centre in the Saw Swee Hock Student Centre. The LSESU Media Centre offers students an incredible range of facilities, including DJ booths, recording equipment and computers. RAISING AND GIVING LSESU boasts an active media group comprising four societies: a weekly newspaper, radio station, TV station and journal. Best of all, all four are entirely student-run and students are encouraged to get involved in all aspects of creating media, whether it’s through an editorial role, anchoring your own TV show or putting together a radio show. Known for its industrious and gregarious nature, The Beaver is the School’s mascot and our newspaper certainly follows suit. You can write stories, take photographs, edit or send in articles every week during the Michaelmas and Lent Terms for one of the oldest student publications in the UK. Clare Market Review has combined art and culture for over a century and the journal boasts LSE alumni such as Spike Milligan, George Bernard Shaw, Sidney Webb and Bertrand

Raising and Giving (RAG) is the fundraising arm of the Students’ Union. RAG is one of the biggest groups on campus, filled with fun-loving students who aim to get as much as they can out of their time at LSE. You can do everything from hitchhiking across Europe and jumping out of aeroplanes to holding a bucket on Houghton Street – all in the name of charity. RAG members decide which events to run and, at the beginning of each academic year, vote which three charities they will support with the money they raise. RAG also facilitates and supports student fundraising whether you’re part of a society, club or organising something yourself. For more information on the LSESU Media Group and RAG, head to www.lsesu.com and make sure you sign up at the Freshers’ Fair during Orientation.

GIVE IT A GO! Give it a Go! is a programme of taster sessions which gives you the chance to try out something new with our sports clubs and societies. The programme includes a range of activities hosted by clubs and societies, from jitsu to ultimate frisbee and from baking to gaming. It’s a great chance to meet new people and try new things by choosing the sessions you want to attend. Most importantly, you don’t need any experience to take part.

HOW DO I SIGN UP? There may be some sessions this year that require you to sign up for them, so if you do want to book onto these, we recommend you do so early to secure your place and avoid disappointment. We do ask that you try to arrive a little early for any sessions you plan to attend as all should start promptly and some will have a maximum capacity and therefore will be first come, first served. Please do also wear sensible clothing and shoes for any exercise sessions. Remember to check out the website at www.lsesu.com/whatson for the most up-to-date information. Should you have any queries about any of the sessions we are running, please contact your Activities and Development Officer, Alastair Duncan, at su.activitiesdevelopment@lse.ac.uk. MISSED OUT ON SIGNING UP TO A CLUB OR SOCIETY? Don’t worry! Sign
up at www.lsesu.com or pop into the Activities Resource Centre (ARC) in the Saw Swee Hock Student Centre between 10am and 4pm, Monday to Friday. UNSURE ABOUT AN ACTIVITY? Come along to one of the scheduled sessions and Give it a Go! All sessions are free unless stated. CANCELLATIONS AND CHANGES Please let us know ASAP if you are no longer
able to attend a session. If a session is cancelled, you will be informed by email (as long as you have signed up to it). Keep an eye on our website for the most up-to-date information. ACCESSIBILITY LSESU is committed to making activities accessible for everyone. If you have any individual requirements, please let us know in advance of the session so that we can do our best to accommodate your needs.

DEMOCRACY AND CAMPAIGNING We are proud to be one of the most politically active and democratic students’ unions in the country. As an LSE student, you are automatically a member of LSE Students’ Union and it’s up to you to direct our work and policies. LSESU is run by students, for students. We are led by Student Representatives (also known as the Executive Team) who ensure that students have the opportunity to make changes within the Students’ Union, the School and wider society.

RUN.VOTE.WIN.

OUR CAMPAIGNS

Elections take place at LSESU twice a year and we actively encourage students to be part of student democracy; whether it’s running for a position, campaigning on behalf of a candidate or voting online, getting involved in student elections is the best way to have your say on what your Students’ Union does.

LSE Students’ Union has a proud tradition of standing up for student rights and actively campaigning on the local, national and global issues that affect its members. We work to ensure that this tradition continues and that students feel empowered to bring about change within the Union and beyond. So if there’s something you want to change, we’ll help you achieve it.

In Michaelmas Term (that’s the first term, for those of you unfamiliar with the School’s terminology), students will vote to elect a Postgraduate Students’ Officer, a Research Students’ Officer, a Mature and Part-time Students’ Officer, a BME (Black and Minority Ethnic) Students’ Officer (a new position for 2014) along with NUS delegates. This year, a Student Council will also be introduced as the main decision-making body of the Union. Nominations for Michaelmas Term elections open at 10am on Monday 13th October and voting opens at 10am on Wednesday 29th October – make sure you follow LSESU online for all the latest information. In Lent Term (second term) you’ll elect the Sabbatical Officers and Part-time Officers – who knows, you might even be the new General Secretary!

We also offer campaign training, resources and support for individual students, societies and clubs. This year, our campaigns have included fighting the Immigration Bill, getting LSE to divest from fossil fuels, and lobbying against an increase in LSE class sizes. Our most successful win has been the School’s decision to create a financial award scheme for asylum seekers applying to LSE, as part of the Equal Access campaign. We aren’t just active within the School: we are affiliated with the National Union of Students (NUS), which campaigns and lobbies on behalf of more than 7 million students in the UK. If you want to find out more about elections, democracy or campaigns at LSESU, check out www.lsesu.com/yourunion.

ASKING FOR HELP Your time at LSE, and in London, will be an incredibly rewarding experience, but we know that student life can sometimes be tough. If you ever find yourself in trouble or in need of help, there are support structures in place to tackle any problems you might be facing. Alongside LSE Student Services (located in Old Building), the LSESU Advice Service – run by our team of professional advisers – is on hand to offer free, confidential, independent and impartial support on both academic and housing issues. Our advisers can give you guidance on LSE academic policies, such as mitigating circumstances and appeals, and can assist with checking contracts for private accommodation. No issue is too big or too small, and because we’re independent from the School, we can represent you and your voice on campus. In the unlikely event that we can’t help, we’ll make sure you get to the people who can.

The Students’ Union also provides several funds designed to help students through their time at LSE, including the LSESU Hardship Fund and the Childcare Fund. For more information about these, visit www.lsesu.com/advice.

CONTACTING THE ADVICE TEAM We are open for telephone and email enquiries from 10.30am - 4.30pm, Monday to Friday. Call our Advice Team on +44 (0)20 7955 7158 (please call between 11am and 1pm if you need to speak to an adviser urgently) or email su.advice@lse.ac.uk.
