GENERAL INFORMATION

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan The secret is out! With so much to offer, Saskatoon is one of Canada’s most talked-about destinations. In recent years, it has landed on the top places to go lists by The Huffington Post, The Globe and Mail and Condé Nast Traveler. Known as “The Bridge City” due to its nine river crossings over the Saskatchewan River, it is a city with outdoor living in mind, especially by having more sunny days than almost any other Canadian city. You might even get a special viewing of the aurora borealis. With its name in Cree meaning “At the place of many Saskatoon berries”, you will find its namesake fruit, along with eateries that rival any major metropolis. Saskatoon blends the traditional and modern when it comes to its cultural offerings like Wanuskewin (a UNESCO World Heritage site applicant) to the Remai Modern art museum. There is something for everyone to experience. Saskatchewan will roll out the prairie hospitality for the CAO and its guests. Come feel the excitement of a destination we have never been to before, and see why Saskatoon was top of our lists to visit. For more information, please visit: www.tourismsaskatoon.com

TRAVEL BY AIR Saskatoon can be reached via the Saskatoon International Airport (YXE). YXE has service direct from Toronto, Edmonton, Vancouver, Winnipeg, and Calgary that is served by Air Canada and WestJet. 4 | CAO 72nd Annual Scientific Session

The field of orthodontic miniscrews is constantly evolving, and while we started out with placement at buccal interradicular sites, today we prefer buccal extra-alveolar and palatal insertion sites. In this fastpaced lecture, Dr. Baumgaertel will provide an overview of the various insertion sites and associated biomechanics in an effort to explain why today’s approach to orthodontic miniscrews allows us to be more successful than ever.

He serves as a member of the editorial review board of the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics and other highly respected journals. Tooth Auto-transplantation for the Challenging Orthodontic Patient 2:00 pm – 3:15 pm | 3:45 pm – 5:00 pm You’ll Learn: The Benefits of tooth auto-transplantation in your complex cases.

Orthodontists are often faced with treatment planning dilemmas for patients presenting with complex impacted, congenitally missing, and traumatized teeth. Traditional treatment options are usually limited for these patients with attempts at extraction of teeth, space closure or space appropriation for a future dental implant. The value of a natural tooth to maintain and develop the supporting bone and gingival tissues is well accepted. From this perspective, the presentation will discuss various protocols for these clinical situations with a focus on tooth auto-transplantation aimed at natural tooth replacement and alveolar ridge management.

DR. JIM JANAKIEVSKI, D.D.S., M.S.D. Jim Janakievski was born and raised in Toronto. He received his D.D.S. from the University of Toronto, which was followed by a general practice residency in upstate New York. He then returned to Toronto and spent five years in general practice. His specialty post-graduate training was completed at the University of Washington, where he received a Certificate in Periodontology with a M.S.D. degree and a Fellowship in Prosthodontics. After graduating, Jim was a full-time assistant professor at the University of Washington Graduate Periodontics department. As a student and faculty member, he was mentored by Dr. Vince Kokich Sr., orthodontist, who later introduced Jim to his future practice partner Dr. David Mathews with whom he maintained a private practice in Tacoma, Washington. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry. He is a reviewer for several dental journals and has published in the area of interdisciplinary dentistry, dental implants and tooth auto-transplantation. He enjoys teaching and sharing his experiences at North American and international conferences. In addition, Jim also teaches at Spear Education in Scottsdale, AZ, and participates in practice-based clinical research through the McGuire Institute of Houston, TX.

Successfully Integrating Today’s Technology into Clinical Orthodontic Practice 2:00 pm – 3:15 pm You’ll learn: How to digitally enhance the patient experience and treatment outcomes.

The introduction and constant evolution of digital technology make it a challenge to integrate into clinical practice. The added advantages to treatment and practice management make investing in this new technology worthwhile. Dr. Alvetro and her team started their digital journey over six years ago and are considered early adopters of today’s technology. She will share her experience to ensure the success of orthodontic practitioners, shorten their learning curve, and increase their efficiency.

DR. LISA ALVETRO, D.D.S., M.S.D. † Dr. Lisa Alvetro has been a solo orthodontic practitioner in Sidney, Ohio for over 27 years. She received her D.D.S. summa cum laude from Ohio State University in 1991 and completed her orthodontic residency at Case Western Reserve University in 1993. She continues to be involved with CWRU orthodontic department as an associate clinical professor teaching both management strategies and digital orthodontic workflow and technologies. Considered an early adopter of technology, she and her team established Alvetro 3D lab in 2017. In her practice, she utilizes the latest technological advances, such as digital imaging, 3D printing, digital indirect bonding, and digital workflows to provide her patients with the most effective care possible. She enjoys sharing her digital experience with colleagues and students. Her dedication to the orthodontic profession led her to become an advocate for 3M OralCare, for whom she has lectured extensively since 2007 throughout the United States and abroad. She currently works with various software and 3D printer companies as an advisor and evaluator. A firm believer in the importance of giving back, Dr. Alvetro founded Smiles of Hope, a recognized NGO operating in Tarime, Tanzania. She and her team also donate their resources and talents through their foundation, St. Jude Dental cooperative in St Lucia. † Denotes financial and/or beneficial interest

Practice Communication – Improve Your Orthodontic Results by Giving Patients the Systematic Support They Need! 2:00 pm – 3:15 pm You’ll learn: • Appreciate the link between oral hygiene and quality of the orthodontic result. • Communication to define the roles of each of the stakeholders in the delivery of orthodontic services. • Understand the relationship between quality of care, quality control procedures, and communication within the team and to the patient. • Identify core elements of a sound management strategy for “oral hygiene control” and systems that deliver on this communication to the patient and the expected outcomes of the treatment.

It is well recognized that oral hygiene is a significant contributor to the quality of orthodontic results. What’s more, the standard “inform and instruct” lecture given at chairside has not been an effective strategy. The Crest Oral-B Orthodontic Essentials Program is designed by Orthodontists to help evaluate, track, teach, and IMPROVE proper hygiene practices during even the most hectic day. Clear oral hygiene goals are set for patients and parents, which helps to simplify risk management and increase communication between all involved parties including your referring office. With a standardized check-up, consistent reporting, home therapy kit, and countless other advantages, this program offers tools to increase your referrals while providing patients the support they need. Today, the OE program is the Number One-used Oral Hygiene program used by Orthodontic practices across Canada. Join us for an exciting event!

DR. DANA VAN ELSLANDE, D.D.S., M.Sc, (D. ORTHO), FRCD(C) Dr. Dana Van Elslande has been in the private practice of orthodontics for 11 years in Calgary, Canmore, and now Okotoks. She is a graduate of the University of Alberta and a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada. She runs a study group for dentists who want to learn more about multidisciplinary care, and she occasionally helps teach with the University of Alberta Graduate Orthodontics Program, as well as the Clinical Auxiliary Orthodontic Module at SAIT. Dr. Van Elslande has lectured with Oral B for over 10 years, and she has several articles related to proper oral hygiene practices while in Orthodontic treatment.
