OAG ANNUAL CONFERENCE

MESSAGE FROM THE OAG PRESIDENT Dear Colleague, Although much of gastroenterology involves the investigation of patient complaints, we as physicians know that investigation alone is of little value if therapy is unavailable. One of the most exciting changes in our specialty has been the proliferation of new treatment options for patients with digestive diseases both on the liver and luminal side. Although new treatments do provide some answers for our patients they have the potential to raise even more questions- in particular, who to treat and for how long. The theme of this year's conference, "Treatment to Target" is an attempt to get the latest available information on some of these therapeutic controversies ranging from the functional to the immunological. Along with Saturday's program, there will be our Annual General Meeting, a discussion on QMP & QBP and St. Michael's Endoscopy course review, again generously presented by this year's honouree, Dr. Paul Kortan. In addition, our Companion Program will offer holistic approaches to good health including a tantalizing session on nutrition. Carrying on with that theme, our Niagara-on-the-Lake hosts at Queen's Landing Inn and Conference Resort promise, as usual, to provide us with only the best in dining and atmosphere. As President, on behalf of the Conference Organizing Committee and our outstanding administrative staff, I want to take this opportunity to encourage you to attend our 18th OAG Annual Meeting and hope that you participate in the education, advocacy and camaraderie that has made this organization the envy of our colleagues in other provinces and other specialties. With kind regards,

James C. Gregor, MD, FRCPC President

MESSAGE FROM THE CONFERENCE CHAIR Dear Colleague, The Organizing Committee for the OAG Annual Conference wishes to welcome you to this year’s (the eighteenth) event. We are sure you will learn new material in a stimulating and entertaining environment. Meeting and interacting with friends and colleagues is also an important component of your meeting. We have listened to your feedback and evaluations from previous meetings and, this year, have chosen “Treating to Target” as our meeting theme. We are all very aware of changes in treatment in our field and changes in expectations of our patients. The meeting organizers feel we will assist you in caring for your patients by summarizing information on who and how to treat and what result to aim for in several key but sometimes-confusing areas. Our first session on Saturday will examine what we should aim for in management of patients with conditions such as NASH, Risk of Portal Hypertension Bleeding and Hepatitis B and C. In our second session we will look at managing symptoms and expectations in patients with functional biliary pain, chronic pancreatitis and IBS. We are bringing back a debate this year. Drs. Brian Feagan and Walter Reinisch will debate the necessity of follow-up endoscopic evaluation in targeting management of UC. All of these sessions will provide ample time for discussion – we expect this to be as lively as always! On Sunday we will hear and see highlights from the most recent St. Michael’s Endoscopy course. We will end with the OAG Annual General Meeting. Your input is always important to guide your Association in the coming year. As in other years, we will have the opportunity to socialize and relax at the Gala and will celebrate the successes of our awards recipient. Our association and our meetings could not exist without the generous and unrestricted support from all our sponsors. We thank our sponsors and encourage all members to interact with them throughout the meeting. The organizers look forward to seeing you all. Please tell us what you like, what you want to hear about in the future and remember to volunteer to help with our next Conference. Cheers,

David Morgan, MD, FRCPC 2014 Conference Chair

WELCOME TO NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE

Niagara-on-the-Lake is often called the loveliest town in Ontario, and has a long and distinguished history. Site of the old Neutral Indian village of Onghiara, it was settled at the close of the American Revolution by Loyalists coming to Upper Canada, many of whom had been members of the much feared Butler’s Rangers, based during the Revolution at Fort Niagara, then under British control.

QMP & QBP Presentation Overview: The QMP of Cancer Care Ontario (CCO) and the College Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) is tasked with developing a quality framework for colonoscopy in Ontario. We have presented material related to the QMP and QBP processes at several recent OAG meetings. Both processes are continuing. The QMP Phase I report was submitted to the MOHLTC on schedule in the Spring and we are waiting for a response from the government. Phase II is proceeding, while we are waiting for government response and funding, and the plan is still to have a completed Phase II report by the end of this fiscal year. This presentation will update. The QPB group work is also proceeding. Recent work has included updates related to the process of OHP conversion to IHFs. Much of this work has been submitted to the CPSO. The goal of the QBP presentation will also be to update OAG members on current QBP work and plans, and will solicit feedback on this material. 12:00 pm - 12:05 pm

COMPANION PROGRAM – THE BENEFITS OF SUPERFOODS IN YOUR DIET with Lesley Moisey, RD, MSc As consumers, we are continually exposed to claims of the next “superfood”, that is, a food that has extraordinary health benefits or thought to be the next “cure-all”. Coconut oil, quinoa, kale, goji, just to name a few, are examples of such foods that are currently populating the shelves of our grocery stores. Conversely, we are blasted with messages that other foods or their constituents are bad for us and must be avoided (i.e. gluten, sugar). Furthermore, with any food trend, the popular diets will follow. We’ve gone from low-fat, the Atkins and South Beach diets to gluten-free and Paleo / Primal ways of eating. Join us in this talk that aims to explore the truths and myths behind the food fads and contemporary diets and how consumers can navigate this ever changing food landscape on the quest for personal health. Lesley Moisey is a Registered Dietitian with a diverse background that has led to expertise in areas including sport nutrition, caffeine and health, and the nutritional management of the acutely ill, hospitalized patient. After finishing a Master of Science at the University of Guelph, she went on to complete her dietetic internship at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. Following her training, she worked as a medical/surgical dietitian at an acute care hospital in Toronto for six years. Her clinical experience prompted a return to school where she is now completing her PhD. Her doctoral work aims to comprehensively evaluate nutritional status, body composition and functional status in survivors of critical illness.

WELLNESS & RELAXATION STOTT PILATES®

with Alexandra Morgan STOTT PILATES® is a contemporary approach to Joseph Pilates’ original exercise method. Developed with assistance from physical therapists, sports medicine and fitness professionals, this method is appropriate for anyone looking to improve their posture, develop core strength, improve joint stability, and overall looking for a safe and effective method of exercise. This “all levels” mat class gives delegates the opportunity to try out something new, or build on previous Pilates practice.

A former dancer and longtime runner from Hamilton (ON), Alexandra Morgan initially found her way into a Pilates class over eight years ago and has never looked back. Whether used for added conditioning while Alex was dancing, or as a means of holding onto her sanity during the completion of her undergraduate degree at Acadia University (BA, Theatre/Sociology ’11), she knows firsthand the positive impact Pilates can have on your daily life. Following the completion of her STOTT Pilates instructor training at the International Certification Center in Toronto, Alex couldn’t be more excited to share her enthusiasm for the STOTT approach to contemporary movement with clients through fun and dynamic classes.
