DIALOGUE ABOUT PROJECT AND SITE

CONNECTION ABOUT SCHOOL IN APPROCHING A DESIGN FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, I BELIEVE THAT THE FIRST THING IS TO REALIZE THAT IT IS THE FIRST AGENT OF SOCIALIZATION. AS AN ARCHITECTS, I HAVE THE RESPONSIBILITY TO CREATE A COMMUNITY SO THE ARCHITECTURE ITSELF CAN STIMULATE ACTIVITY. ESPECIALLY IN A ELEMENTARY, KIDS ARE YOUNGER AND ENERGETIC, THEY WILL NEED EXTRA SPACE FOR THEIR ENERGY. YET, NOT ONLY DOES KIDS NEED LARGE PLAYGROUND, SMALLER SCALE GATHERING SPACE IS ALSO NEEDED, SO THEY CAN BEGIN TO GROW IN GROUPS AND DEVELOP TIGHTER BONDS WITH EACH OTHERS.

CALIFORNIA HAS SEEN HISTORICAL ENROLLMENT RATES FOUR TIMES HIGHER THAN NATIONAL AVERAGES. MANY CURRENT SCHOOLS ARE AGING AND OVER 30% OF EXISTING FACILITIES NEED MAJOR RENOVATION. AT THE SAME TIME, CALIFORNIA SCHOOLS ARE SPENDING NEARLY $450 MILLION ON ENERGY,MORE THAN THE COMBINED COST OF SUPPLIES AND BOOKS, IN A TIME OF RISING CONCERN OVER ENERGY SUPPLIES AND TIGHT SCHOOL BUDGETS. THERE IS THEREFORE A NEED AND OPPORTUNITY TO DESIGN AND BUILD A NEW TYPOLOGY OF SCHOOL GROUNDS: FACILITIES THAT IMPROVE THE LEARNINGENVIRONMENT. THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WILL BE LOCATED IN THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES’ KOREATOWN AND IT WILL HOUSE 458 STUDENTS. THE SITE IS CURRENTLY OCCUPIED BY THE CHARLES KIM ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ; HOWEVER THIS PROJECT WILL IGNORE THE CURRENT SCHOOL AND THE DESIGN WILL BE BASE ON A EMPTY SITE. THE SITE IS FACING THE STREETS ON THREES SIDE. WESTERN AVENUE ON THE WEST SIE BEING THE BUSIEST. ON THE SOUTH SIDE,THERE IS A 5 STORY PARKING STRUCTURE AND A HOTEL.SURROUNDING BUILDING ON SITE ARE MOSTLY ORIENTATED TO THE E-W DIRECTION, FUTHER CLIMATE RESEARCH HAVE SHOWN THAT THE PEVILING WIND COMES FROM THE SOUTH SIDE. THEREFORE, I APPROCH THE SITE LOCATING THE BUILDING TO THE NORTH CORNER SO ORIENTATED TO THE E-W DIRECTION, SO SUNLIGTH WILL NOT BE BLOCKED AND ALLOW NATURE VENTILATION TO OCCUR.

LOADING

IS

AX PARKING

CONCEPT THE BUILDING IS DESIGN INTO A TWO STORY STRUCTURE. THE ONCEPT OF THE DESIGN IS TO USE A COURTYARD THAT BECOMES THE IMFORMED VALLEY, WHERE IT IS THE CENTRAL FOCUS IN THE ARCHITECTURE. ALL PROGRAMS

PROGRAM THE PROGRAM SEEKS TO CREATE A CONTINUOUS FLOW BETWEEN THE COURT, LIBRARY, AND THE MUTIPURPOSE ROOM. THESE ARE PROGRAM THATS HAS A STRONG PUBIC NATURE; THESE PROGRAMS SHOULD NOT BE SEEN AS NEGATIVE SPACE AND BEING PLACE IN THE CORNER. I BROUGHT THE STAGE OUT INTO THE COURT AND DESIGNED A STAIRCASE THAT SERVE BOTH FOR SEATING AND THE CIRCULATION TO LIBRARY. I BELIEVE THE DESIGN WILL GUIDE THE STUDENTS MORE INTO PUBLIC PROGRAMS AND ENCOURAGE THE STUDENTTO USE THEM.

LANDSCAPE

9

THE LANDSCAPE WAS DESIGNED USING GUIDING LINES TO CREATED FRAGMENTED PIECES. THESE PIECES EXPAND AND GET LARGER AS IT GETS TO THE OUTDOOR AND BECOME THE PLAYING FIELDS. AT THE TWO ENDS OF THE AXIS, A STAIRCASE IS BEING USED AS A DESTINATION. HOWEVER, THESE STAIR IS NOT TO MARK THE END OF THE AXIS, BUT TO CREATE INTERACTION.

STRUCTURE & CONSTRUCTION

MATERIAL LIST

THE BUILDING IS CONSTRUCTED BY A LIGHT GAGUE STEEL FRAMING SYSTEM. VERTICAL LOAD ARE CARRIED BY HSS COLUMNS AND STUD BEARING WALL AND GOES INTO THE FOUNDATION. THE BEAM FRAMING SYSTEM IS A COMBINE OF STRUCTURAL STEEL FRAMING AND LIGHT GAGUE JOISTS. THE SPECIFIC SELECTION OF THE BEAM SIZE IS CALCULATE BASE ON A TOTAL LOAD OF 48 POUNDS PER SQUARE FEET FOR THE ROOF AND 136 POUNDS PER SQUARE FEET FOR THE SECOND FLOOR. FLOOR PLATES ARE CONSTRUCTED BY METAL DECKING WITH LIGHT WEIGHT CONCRETE FILL.

ANALYSIS AND ACCESSIBILITY THE CONSTRUCTION TYPE IS II-A, WITH A FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEM. ADA RAMPS ARE PROVIDED FOR ACCESS TO THE UNDERGROUND MUTIPURPOSE ROOM. TWO ELEVATOR ARE PROVIDED; ONE FOR THE SECOND FLOOR AND THE OTHER FOR THE UNDERGROUND PARKING LOT. ALL RESTROOMS ARE ACCOMODATE TO ADA REGULATION WITH A MINIMUN 60” TURNING DIAMETER. ACCESSIBLE PARKING IS ALSO PROVIDED, 9’X18’ IN SIZE FOR VANS AND SATISFY THE 5’ LOADING AISLE RULE.

ENVIROMENTAL ANALYSIS ARCHITECTS ARE NOT ONLY SPACE DESIGNER, BUT ALSO NEED TO CONSIDERED FOR THE LIVING QUALITY OF THE SPACE BEING DESIGNED. ENVIOMENTAL CONTROLS IS THE CRITICAL PART OF THE BUILDING THAT HAS DIRECT IMPACT ON THE USER AND NEED TO BE IINTEGRATED INTO THE DESIGN. IN THIS PROJECT, I’VE LOOK INTO SEVERAL COMPONENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROLS INCLUDING HVAC DESIGN, LIGHTING DESIGN, SHADING DESIGN, ACOUSTIC, WATER SERVICE, AND ROOF TOP RENEWABLE ENERGY. ANALYSIS IS DONE THE TYPICAL ROOM TYPE CREATING A GENERAL PICTURE OF HOW THE SYSTEMS WILL BE DESIGNED AND CAN BE APPLIED TO THE OTHER PARTS OF THE BUILDING.

RENEWABLE ROOFTOP ENERGY 780 5’X3’ 240W SOLAR PANELS CAN BE PLACED ON TOP OF THE ROOF CAPABLE OF GENERATING 187.2KW OF ENERGY. ON A YEARLY SCHEDULE, IT IS ABLE TO 242019 KW OF ENERGY SAVING $30252.

LIGHTING THE DESIGN OF THE LIGHTING SYSTEM IS FIRST BY ANALYZING THE DAYLIGHT POTENTIALS IN THE SPACE. THEN, I USED THE ZONAL CAVITY METHOD (LUMEN METHOD) TO CALCULATION THE REQUIRED LIGHTING TO PROVIDE AMBIENT LIGHTING AND DESIGN THE LIGHTING LAYOUT. THE LIGHTING GOAL WAS SET AT 50FC, AND I APPLIED 2 SYSTEM TO THE DESIGN; ONE IS USING 18 PHILIPS 1001, AND THE OTHER IS USING SPS1GFSVA232 ALSO BY PHILIPS.

H.V.A.C. SYSTEM

13

THE DESIGN OF THE HVAC SYSTEM IS DERIVE BASED ON THE MAXIMUM HEATING AND COOLING LOADS CALCULATED. I SELECTED THE 48VA-G FURNACE AND REFRIGERANT SYSTEM. THIS SYSTEM CAN SUPPORT UP TO 5 TONS OF COOLING LOAD, WHICH SASTISFY THE REQUIRED 3.45 TONS FROM THE SIZING CALCULATION. IT IS ALSO SUITABLE BECAUSE IT IS A PACKAGE SYSTEM THAT IS EXCELLENT FOTR SMALL BUILDING. A TOTAL OF 2000CFM IS NEED FOR TWO CLASSROOM, THEREFORE 1000 CFM IS REQUIRED FOR ONE. THE AIR IS BROUHT IN BY A 15”X12” DUCT, AND DISTRUBUTE TO FOR DIFFUSER

WATER SERVICES HOT AND COLD WATER IS SUPPLIED TO THE SINK AND COLD WATER IS SUPPLIED TO THE TOILET. THE VENT IS FOLLOWING THE SEWAGE LINE TO CARRY AWAY OFFENSIVE GASES, RELIEVE PRESSURE AND AIDS THE FLOW.

ACOUSTIC ACOUSTICAL CONDITIONS INCLUDE VALUES SUCH AS ABSORPTION VALUE ("A"-SABINS), AVERAGE ABSORPTION FACTOR (Α-BAR), AND THE REVERBERATION TIME ("T60") AT ALL BROAD-BAND FREQUENCIES TO CALCULATE. THESE VALUES ARE CALCULATED BY MATERIAL SETTING, SEVERAL TESTING NEED OT BE DONE BEFORE DETERMINING THE FINAL SURFACE MATERIAL SO THE ALPHA BAR SUM AND REVERBERATION TIME IS IN ACCEPTABLE RANGE.

SHADING SYSTEM THE SHADING SYSTEM SERVE TWO PURPOSE IN THIS DESIGN; ONE IS TO INFORCE THE CENTRAL FOCUS CONCEPT BY MAINTAINING A BOX EXTERIOR, AND THE OTHER IS TO CONTROL LIGHTING. IT IS A PERFORATED METAL SYSTEM WITH A PATTERN OF VARIOUS HOLE SIZES. IN ADDITION, THERE ARE OPENINGS ON THE SYSTEM ALLOWING THE USER TO CONTROL THE AMOUNT OF LIGHT THEY NEED.

The Client: A group of friends that graduated from the University of Santa Cruz. Strongly believed the writing of Rudolf Steiner, who promotes a new organic farming method known as Bio-dynamism. The group lived in a trailer before saving up enough money, and want to build a winery of their own that integrated holistically into the landscape.

ENCLOSURE

SITE PLAN Bio- Dynamism: Biodynamic agriculture is a method of organic farming originally developed by Rudolf Steiner that employs what proponents describe as "a holistic understanding of agricultural processes". One of the first sustainable agriculture movements, it treats soil fertility, plant growth, and livestock care as ecologically interrelated tasks, emphasizing spiritual and mystical perspectives.

20

Changing Opacity

21

The Preparations: Nine different preparations to aid fertilization. Steiner believed that these preparations mediated terrestrial and cosmic forces into the soil. The most famous- horn-manure a humus mixture prepared by filling the horn of a cow with cow manure and burying it in the ground.

enclosure for interaction PATTERN

The Design Process: The design search for an natural element that can generate a formal gesture. It results in a texture study of a vine leaf. In the primary study, space is created through extruding selected pattern and certain nodes are identified at where the vines meet as penetrations. In later studies, opacity was changed to create different shadows. Then, the form is seen as a wrapping that creates enclosures, which interaction can happen within and below. The design require a combining of random pattern into an orderly disciplined program, and not forgetting the experience has to always connect to nature. The final solution is a human scale village that the circulation consistently guides the indoor to outdoor experience.

TEXTURE

Visitor and Outreach ExhibitThe experience of the building starts with a narrow ramp with compress walls. Turning corners are designed for anticipation. The exhibit is meant for one experience in one building block. The visitors can experience nature from the continuity of transitioning from indoor gallery to outdoor landscape.

22

Public Visitor PlazaThe Visitor Plaza is a designed outdoor room, with the texture generated wrapping 7 ft above. It is a space that is not wide open therefore the sense of enclosure can still be felt, yet does not block the vision to the vineyard.

23

VISITOR CIRCULATION

Tasting RoomThe tasting room is located at the edge that has the open view to the hill side. Visitors can enjoy their wine can experience the landscape through a full height glass curtain wall. BARRELS

Fermentation tanksSince the wine making process is a gravity fed process, the fermentation tanks requires a double height space. The design utilizes the space so it became an exhibit to the wine making process.

GRAPE HANDELING

BARRELS

Wine LibraryThe barrel room is usually the eye catching part of the winery. The wine library in located in the center of the barrel room. It is an experience that is intimate, inside a glass box surrounded by barrels. WINERY WORKER CIRCULATION

SITE THE LAYOUT ON THE SITE PROVIDES AN INTERACTION BETWEEN THE BUILDING AND THE SURROUNDING CONDITIONS, AS WELL AS THE FUTURE PLANS. A TRIPARTITE STRUCTURE OF THE BUILDING OVERLAPS AT THE CORNER OF EACH BAR. AT ONE END OF THE SITE, THE DESIGN ALLOWS AN OPENING FOR THE COMMUNITY TO CIRCULATE INTO THE SITE.

4KM

IT ALSO FORMS A CONNECTION TO THE DEVELOPING PARK, PROVIDING INTERACTION WITH ITS SURROUNDINGS. TH E BUILDING ITSELF IS FORMED FROM THE IDEA OF A DOUBLE HELIX SEPARATION. TH E TWO HELIXES ARE CONNECTED AT ONE END, THE TOWER, AND THE TWO STRANDS PROVIDE AN OPENING FOR TWO NEW HELIXES TO FORM. TH ESE TWO SEPARATE STRANDS ARE THE WINGS OF THE BUILDING THAT EMBRACE THE INNER COURTYARD AND OPENS TO THE ADJACENT PARK.

INTEGRATION

4

THE IDEA OF INTEGRATION IS A MAIN FOCUS THROUGHOUT THE DESIGN AND CONCEPT OF THIS PROJECT. BUILDINGS AND DESIGNS MUST MAINTAIN A CONNECTION WITH ITS SURROUNDINGS AND OVERALL LOCATION. SINCE IT IS A NEW COMPONENT TO THE SITE AND COMMUNITY, IT MUST PROVIDE A LINK BETWEEN ITSELF, THE CITY, AND THE CULTURE. TH E VISION OF “COSMOPOLITAN TAICHUNG” DRIVES THIS PROJECT TO PROVIDE THIS INTEGRATION AND INTERACTION. TH E PROGRAM OF THIS BUILDING AND SITE ASSIST IN THE CONNECTIVITY.

A LIBRARY IS A PIECE OF PROGRAM THAT MAY ALWAYS BE USED AND ENJOYED BY THE VISITORS TO THE BUILDING. HOWEVER, A MIXTURE OR INTERACTION OF VARIOUS PROGRAMS IN SAME LEVEL MAY CAUSE DISTRACTIONS. TH E LIBRARY IS DESIGNED IN A WAY THAT PROVIDES LEVELS OF ACTIVITIES FOR ALL AGE GROUPS AND INTEREST TYPES. ALL LEVELS OF THE LIBRARY MAY BE OCCUPIED BY ANYONE INTERESTED, BUT WILL CATER TO A PARTICULAR GROUP AND AGE. TH IS AMPLIFI ES THE LEVEL OF OCCUPANCY AND PROVIDES TO ALL. IT TAKES A TYPICAL LIBRARY AND TRANSFORMS INTO A NEW TYPOLOGY. IT INTRODUCES CONTEMPORARY METHODS OF LITERARY EDUCATION WITH MORE MEDIA AND INTERACTIVE TECHNOLOGIES THAT TRANSFORM THE TYPICAL PRACTICE OF READING BOOKS. THIS ATTRACTS THE YOUNGER VISITORS AND WELCOMES THE ELDER GENERATIONS INTO A MORE CONTEMPORARY WAY OF READING. Representation VS. Abstraction: This project is not only a project to explore the housing tyology, but also into the idea of the spirit of space. In believing that contemporary architecture need to have a neutral aesthetic, it also has the capacity to carry certain representaion ideas. This projects attempt to reflect my personal cultural background through a site plan developed by the idea of a Chinese garden. The element of “wall” is introduced to create both enclosure and seperation. All together, it created the progressive experience change in the sequence of start, anticipate, turn, and finally connect.

The issue of housing: With a combine program of apartment units and work live units, a the issue of private vs, private needed to be address. In the public yards, openess is needed but not to figurative cluster. In the private space, intimacy is needed but not to create isolation. The issue of site: The project is site on a corner of a busy commercial boulevardand a highly residential street. It is a challenge to transform from the commercial to the residential courtyard in the back.

STUDENT LIGHTING SCHOLARSHIP DESIGN THE INFORMATIVE PRISTINE SPRING 2014

Materiality can influence sensibility. Through the purist expression of material, it is a way to guide a person's emotion. I firmly believe that there is no grading to the quality of any material. As a designer, it is a constant adventure to explore what kind of spark the designed object can create with a certain material ; therefore the commitment into the articulation through materiality is always an interesting process. In this lighting design , I pick up this philosophy, leaving the heformal gestures to the purist simplicit of rectangular forms . The object itself is a boldly monolithic and monotone volume . However, granted the cold and abstract form, I believe it should reveal a soft ambience. The force of the design does not lies in the formal manipulation but the immediate, visceral impact on the viewer as light painted the shadow on the board.

Sustainability Drawing influence to recent Pritzker Prize Award winner, Shigeru Ban, I have been inspired to challenge myself to explore an unknown yet accessible and recyclable material. This wall sconce is constructed with recycled wire mesh from pervious concrete project and wood chip pick up outside of our studio. The back board wood is also recycled and sanded down from scrape piece picked up in our woodshop.

Material : Wire Mesh + Wood chip + Plywood Board
