CONCLUSION

THE COLLECTIVE DOMAIN This structure is designed as an experience that allows the viewer to interact with the site in the same way that the Rillito River interacts with the land. In addition to the path, the structure is composed of three pods. The first pod welcomes visitors at the beginning of the trail that leads into the site south of the river. The other two pods are designed as resting points where viewers may rest or seek shelter from the sun. The south most pod takes the experience deeper into the site away from the bike path while its sister pod to the north provides a view of the river. All three share a design structure that layers and overlaps itself to create a feeling of protection. The separate pods are designed for privacy and to create intimacy between the viewer and the site.

THE DOMESTIC DOMAIN Guests looking to experience the site would enter from south fourth avenue. They would then move through the alley and between the passage between the commercial and gathering space. The path opens to a circular courtyard that provides entry to the commercial and gathering space. If the resident or guest were to continue down the path, they would pass the entrance to the utility space which contains the mailroom, a small lounge, and the laundry room. Residents are more likely to park and enter from south Herbert Avenue. The resident enters the unit through a passage that allows access to the interior courtyard. The flow of the unit opens to a small living space to the kitchenette with the possibility of moving outside to the patio. The spiral staircase is surrounded by tall windows on half of the exterior and the interior side facing the courtyard. The bathroom is immediately at the top of the stairs and adjacent to the bedroom. PA RT I I

The shapes and movement of the built structures are primarily influenced by the vegetation originally found on the site. Each building incorporates curves to imitate the organic nature of the vegetation. In turn, each curve is developed around a circle placed on the site. The four different building types (residential, utility, gathering and commercial) are connected through the flow of the height of the buildings. This flow begins with the lowest height of the utility structure and is bridged to the two-story buildings by the commercial structure. The four building types are also connected through the typology of open windows to bring the viewer closer to the surrounding vegetation. The site study and structural development is an exploration of organic shapes, and the practice of working alongside nature through architecture.

The drawing is an exploration of a specific residential unit located on site five in Armory Park. The residential unit is the only single-family dwelling on site. The interior is an imagined plan of the spaces that are unknown to the public. The goal of this drawing was to visualize a hypothetical

RESIDENTIAL DESIGN EXCERCISE

This drawing takes a closer look at the different scales of vegetation surrounding site five. The different types of vegetation can be placed into five main categories each represented by a different color.

This painting is an exploration of the conditions of light through color found in the Light and Shadow Section Charrette. The painting depicts the stark contrast of light and shadow through warm and cool tones and the conditions the lights and shadows cast upon the walls of the section.

LIGHT EXPLORATION

Ingress is made from a collection of doors photographed from sites four and five. It is a study of the entryways and their wide range of colors found in residential units in Tucson. Doors are often a viewer’s first impression of a building. The entrance of a building sets a precedent for the tone of the interior of a building which is why they hold so much significance, especially in residential structures. SI TE STUDY
