Making memories from the first to the last dance.
Did you know? Personal style and preference aren’t the only things that dictate certain wedding day decisions. In fact, a host of style guidelines exist to help brides and grooms make the right choices on their big day. For example, while a man might have a specific tuxedo style in mind for his wedding day, something such as the time of the ceremony can dictate which styles are appropriate. A morning ceremony, for instance, typically calls for a cutaway, or morning coat, with the ushers in matching strollers. For early afternoon ceremonies, however, it’s typical for men in the wedding party to wear tuxedos without tails. Grooms who really want to wear tails should only do so for ceremonies that begin after 4 p.m., as tails are considered too formal for ceremonies beginning earlier in the day.

Bridal registeries: Why, when and where? You have announced your engagement. What’s next? Sometimes the couple will have an engagment party hosted by family members. Then, customarily there are bridal showers given for the bride-elect and sometimes Honey-do showers for the bride-elect and groom-elect. All of the above are custom and routine. But what to buy as a wedding gift for the couple? That is when the couple usually chooses a registry at their chosen stores. This is customarily done before all showers. What’s a registry and why choose one? A registry is a selection of preferred items that the engaged couple has chosen as wedding gifts. The registry includes a listing
of houseware, dishes, china, flatware, bedding, kitchen and bath items, etc. selected by the couple. A registry also makes an easier and convenient method for wedding guests to select a gift chosen by the couple. Many couples choose in-town businesses and out-of-town stores to shop for their registries. There’s the ever-popular WalMart, which offers the couple a wide selection of gift items. Wal-Mart offers on-line wedding registries. Many couples choose Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, and other popular stores in the area. Eunice offers registries at Bellard’s Family Pharmacy, Augie’s Maple Avenue Pharmacy & Gifts, Cinderella’s Cottage and Petals & Pots.
Some of Eunice’s registries offer the couple many choices of houseware, fine china, flatware and crystal, photo frames and albums, silver, and much more for the couple’s first home.
Bellard’s Family Pharmacy and Gifts offers the bride-elect a registry which is located in the bridal department of the store. The honoree chooses a selection of bridal gifts which may
include wedding frames, guest book and other wedding accessories. The bride-elect also can select miscellaneous items in the store. A book is marked See Registry on Page 4

Did you Know? According to the United States Census Bureau (USCB), more than 2 million couples get married each year in the United States. The average bride is a shade over 25 years of age, while the average groom is nearly 27-years-old. In a nod to the changing nature of society, onethird of those getting married each year have been married before. That’s especially notable to those who make a living providing wedding services, be it reception halls, videographers, photographers, or others who make their living in the wedding industry. That’s because the average wedding budget is roughly $20,000, meaning weddings, even for brides and grooms who have been down the aisle before, remain a costly expense for the participants and a lucrative venture for those in the industry. In fact, $72 billion is spent on weddings each year. To put that in better perspective, consider that only $8 billion per year is spent on honeymoons, meaning brides and grooms are liable to spend nine times more on their wedding than they are on their honeymoon.

Patience is the key to 70 years of marriage children. The couple met each other as neighbors. Philip said, “We were raised as neighbors and met at house dances. We courted about two years before we married.” The couple married on April 9, 1939 at Our Lady of Sacred Heart Church in Church Point. “It was on Easter Sunday back then. Father C.A. Bienvenu married us. Our witnesses were Emile Fontenot, Ruth Sattler Cormier and Wille Benoit,” said Philip. Philip retired as a janitor from the Acadia Parish School Board after working for 21 years. Minnie retired in housekeeping from the Acadia St. Landry Hospital. The couple both still live at home. This couple “two-stepped” into their marriage
Mr. and Mrs. Ian Oliver Sarah Summerlin and Ian Oliver met in passing nine years ago. They formally met each other during a mutual friend’s wedding in December of 2006. Summerlin was helping out as a wedding coordinator since the actual coordinator had missed a flight. Ian was an usher.
After sharing a few two-steps at the reception, plans were made for a group to celebrate New Year’s together. Soon afterwards a friendship began. The couple officially began dating after Mardi Gras in 2007. The couple’s time of dating mingled in with Ian’s return
to school to pursue a career in nursing. Despite Ian’s busy study schedule, the couple made it a high priority to enjoy life. Gathering with friends and dancing to Cajun music is very much part of who the couple are. Sarah recalls that it had been awhile since they were able to get out to hear some of their favorite bands, so they improvised, turning her kitchen floor into the next-best dance hall in town. After dating almost two years, Ian made it official by proposing just before Christmas. Part of his engagement surprise was he had booked the church on a date the couple had mentioned in passing some months prior. Knowing May weddings were tough to book, he reserved the date in advance. The couple married on May 23, 2009 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. A reception followed at the Point-Aux-Loups Springs Ballroom in Iota. The bride wore her mother’s wedding gown which had been partially redesigned, honoring their love of family and tradition. Summerlin is the daughter of Harry and Jean Summerlin
and is employed at St. Edmund High School as a Religion Administrator and teacher. She is a 1994 graduate of St. Edmund High and received a B.A. in Theology from Madonna University in Michigan. Oliver is the son of Ronald and Deborah Oliver and is a 1997 graduate of Eunice High School. He attended T.H. Harris where he earned a degree in Information Technology. He continued his education graduating

from LSUE School of Nursing. Ian is employed at Opelousas General as an RN in the emergency room. Months into their marriage they both feel blessed by many of the joys of married life, from daily life, to the gift of their first born son on his way, as the couple is expecting in late March.

Club,” Allen said. The couple, Allen at 23 years old, and Gerry at 18, dated from October until December. They were married on Dec. 20, 1953. “We were engaged on Halloween night, Oct. 31,” Allen said. The couple married in the Immaculate Conception Church in Washington. Best Man was Robert L. West and Maid of Honor was Lou Ann Fontenot. Other attendants were Delores Soileau and Harris Bardeaux.
The couple took a honeymoon trip to Baton Rouge. The Ortegos are parents to four sons: Blane of Baton Rouge, Danny of Eunice, Michael of Nuba, and Craig of Lafayette. They have 13 grandchildren. Allen served in the Army, including two years as a Staff Sergeant. His first job was at SouthWestern State in Ville Platte where he worked as a telephone repairman. He also worked milking cows at a dairy in Ville Platte. Allen retired after working 18 years as an insurance agent at Life & Casualty Insurance.
He later served as director of the Eunice Food Bank for 10 years. Gerry first worked as a florist, owning her own shop in Ville Platte, The Boutique de Fleur. She later worked as a bookkeeper for Dixie Glass in Opelousas and at City Glass in Eunice for many years. She is currently an OakLane resident. In the couple’s earlier years of marriage they enjoyed traveling in their RV. The couple have been Eunice residents for the past 33 years.
The wedding band’s origins Wedding rings are a tradition that date back to ancient times. The ancient Egyptians were the first people known to take their symbol for eternity, the circle, and use it to signify the marriage union. They placed a ring on the third finger of the left hand (a tradition we still have today) because they believe that the “vein of love” ran directly from
this finger to the heart. These ancient rings were made of everything from leather to bone to metal. Gold wedding bands-probably the most popular type of wedding ring in the world todaywere once a sign of great prosperity. Wedding rings were also once used as part of a groom’s bride payment in arranged marriages, and showed the groom’s noble intentions.

Did you know? Weddings are rich in traditions. Oftentimes these traditions are handed down through the years from ancient times. Here are explanations of a few: * The tradition of bridesmaids dressing the same as

lore, Saturday, a popular wedding day, is the unluckiest day to marry. * The veil dates back to ancient Rome, when it was flame-yellow, worn over the face and called a flammeum.
