CROWLEY – Coach Tommy Tate’s Crowley High Gents find themselves in unfamiliar territory yet again heading into the 2010 prep football season. Last year it was a district realignment and a number of new teams on the Gents’ schedule. This year it’s high expectations - not from themselves, but from fans in Crowley and prognosticators across the state. “The talk hadn’t come from here,” said Tate. “It might come from the outside, but not from our guys. Our guys understand that this is a process and we’re just trying to get better each day. There’s a lot of work to be done, a lot of timing and ball handling in the back field and tying it in with the offensive line. “That’s the key, to be efficient offensively, being able to be balanced running the football and throwing the football. When you have that balance, you’re usually a pretty good football team.” Also returning offensively is tackle Shawn Guidry, center Jude Credeur and guard Devin Hebert. “Up front, coach (Craig) Manuel does a heck of a job,” said Tate. “We have three guys returning that have played a lot and that will be key for us. We’ll probably start a young guy at tackle in Yuri Lewis and hopefully he can handle it. Then we’ll be able to rotate some guys on the offensive line too.” The main question mark for the Gents is on defense where they lost a pair of dominating linebackers in Calvin Lewis and George Henagan as well as all-purpose standout Troy Wilridge. “Coach (Cedric) Figaro and his guys do a great job with the scheme that they run,” said Tate. “We are young on defense, but we play with a lot of energy and attitude. We play with a motor and that’s going to be the key.” Returning All-District performer Tuskani Figaro headlines this year’s linebacking core after logging 62 tackles and 12 sacks last season. He is joined by newcomers Brody Deshotel, Chris Wilson and Jacoby Solomon. “For the most part, our linebackers
don’t have a lot of game experience, but they have a lot of attitude,” said Tate. Kristian Allen is the lone returner in the Gents secondary that also consists of Phillip Artall, Marquise Lee and Brennan Andrus. “We’re young in the secondary so we have to learn the cover schemes that we have and we have to learn how to defend different formations, make checks and stuff like that,” said Tate. “Having Kristian Allen back brings a lot of experience to the secondary which is good.” The Gents return their most experience on the line in their 3-4 defense. Troy Johnson, who had 40 tackles and five sacks last year, returns at end as does Travoris Robinson. Nick Hoffpauir returns at nose tackle. “What I like about this team is that they come to work every day,” said Tate. “We take it one day at a time right now.” Crowley kicks off its 2010 campaign with the Acadia/Vermilion Parish Jamboree Friday in Kaplan when they take on Erath at 7 p.m. The Gents’ open the regular season at home on Sept. 3 against Class 4A Jen-

nings and follow that up with three straight road games at Abbeville (Sept. 10), Bolton (Sept. 17) and Peabody (Sept. 24). The Gents return home to Gardiner Memorial Stadium on Oct. 1 for their Homecoming game against Rayne. They open District 4-3A play the following week
(Oct. 8) at home against Iowa before traveling to Church Point for a Thursday night contest on Oct. 14. Westlake visits on Oct. 22 before a road trip to Eunice on Oct. 29. Crowley closes out the regular season on Nov. 5 with a home game against the Northwest Raiders.

CROWLEY – Reloading, rather than rebuilding, is something Lewis Cook has grown accustomed to during his 13 years at the helm of the Notre Dame Pioneers football team. Regardless of the annual losses to graduation, Cook has built the Pioneers into a powerhouse year in and year out in Class AAA football, reaching the state finals six times in the last 10 years before picking up their second championship trophy during that time in 2010 with a 14-7 victory over Parkview Baptist. This year, however, the Pios’ traditional trek to the New Orleans Superdome may be a little bit tougher than normal after graduating a number of key players from last year’s squad. “The good thing is that we return quite a few players from last year’s team,” said Cook, who has five starters back on offense and seven back on defense. “There’s some
experience coming back. We have some big holes to fill, but there’s holes to fill every year. “Every year the kids have seemed to step up and try to fill the shoes of the teams that were ahead of them and I think this bunch is willing to accept that challenge.” That challenge could be a tough one - on both sides of the football. Offensively, the most notable loss is that of quarterback Ryan Leonards, who is now pursing a collegiate baseball career at Louisiana Lafayette. Leonards was a key cog in the Pios’ run to the state title game in 2008 before suffering a broken collarbone in the quarterfinals against Richwood. He returned last year and guided the Pios to a perfect 15-0 season while throwing for over 2,000 yards and 21 touchdowns. Taking over under center this year for the Pios will be Stu Cook, who saw time at quarterback after Leonards was injured and helped Notre Dame get through a close victory over Redemptorist in the 2008 semifinals. Last season Cook was at running back
and racked up 598 yards and 12 touchdowns on 132 carries. He also hauled in 31 passes for 351 yards and six touchdowns. “Quarterback is the hardest position to play on offense,” said Cook. “When you can bring back an experienced quarterback like we did last year, it makes life a lot easier for all of us. Anytime you lose a quarterback, it’s tough and having it being Ryan, the hole’s a little bit bigger to fill. “But with Stu having been on the field, I mean the kid led us to a semifinal win and quarterbacked in the championship game (in 2008) so that should help him. And that’s why I’m going with him.” A big plus for Notre Dame is the return of tailback Logan Venable, who led the Pios’ ground attack last year with 888 yards and 14 touchdowns on 151 carries. Luke Besse, who saw significant time last year, will be in at fullback. “Having Logan back gave us the freedom to move Stu (from tailback to quarterback) because now you have a tailback with a ton of carries who had a great year last

The senior receiver had a breakout year in 2009, catching 27 passes for 660 yards and seven touchdowns, including the eventual game-winning touchdown in the state title game. “We have one of the better receivers that we’ve had in a while coming back in Zac,” said Cook. “He’s been through all the battles and had the big catch in the championship game.” Jackson Landry returns at tight end and Pete Petitjean returns at guard while Brannon Trahan takes over at center after getting three starts last season. “Pete has been out there fighting battles for two years now and Brannon has been tested,” said Cook. “So, there’s a decent little nucleus set up around us to give us a

And growing up fast in every phase is a must as usual with the non-district slate that Cook has lined up. Following a scrimmage against St. Thomas More and a jamboree contest against Acadiana, Notre Dame opens the season with back-to-back home games against Class 4A opponents when they host Teurlings on Thursday, Sept. 2 and Breaux Bridge on Sept. 10. The Pios then travel to Baton Rouge to take on Christian Life on Sept. 17 before returning home to take on St. Louis on Sept. 24. Their final non-district contest is Oct. 1 at Eunice. “The first seven weeks are going to be good for us,” said Cook. “We’ll get tested real quick with the scrimmage and the jamboree. And then we have Teurlings and Breaux Bridge. The first four weeks is going to be a grueling stretch. And then with Christian Life, St. Louis and Eunice, that’s some good quality teams. We’ll get to find out a lot about ourselves early.” The Pios then open league play on Oct. 8 at Erath before hosting Rayne on Oct. 14. Back-to-back road trips to Abbeville and North Vermilion follow before the Pios close out the regular season at home against Kaplan.

IOTA – The Iota Bulldogs are entering their second season back in the 5-AA, one that head coach Marcus LeJeune believes will be wide open. “You still have quality teams in both areas,” said LeJeune. “It seems like in AAA … they’ve got more numbers, more players, one-way players. It’s a different kind of ball, but AA is good as well. The only real difference is the numbers.” The only other difference, according to LeJeune, is that AA teams are more likely to have to play freshmen, especially if there are injuries. “As far as the quality goes, though, there are some quality teams in AA, just like there are in AAA.” LeJeune is entering his seventh year as a head coach and led Iota to a 4-6 overall record while going 2-4 in district play in 2009. Despite a below average season, the Bulldogs made it into the playoffs, but

The offensive line, which will see three new starters, will be a work in progress for the Bulldogs. Left tackle John Ponson (6-3, 285), left guard Tyler Crochet (6-2, 195) and right guard Derek Smith (6-1, 175) will join returning starters center Sean Veronie (5-11, 305) and Mitchell Orcino (6-6, 245) to lead the offensive charge for the Bulldogs. “The more they play, the better they’ll get,” said LeJeune. ing leadership, this year, Iota’s returners are all mixed, on both sides of the pigskin. The Bulldogs did lose their passing leader from last year, Ben Thevis, but Gavin Guidry (6-0, 165) looks to step in and fill the void immediately. Other offensive starters are a mix of new and returnees. J.P. Ward will enter the fray as tight end, while Bryce Zaunbrecher (5-8, 155) will return as split end, Phillip Reed (5-5, 165) will return as fullback and Colby Wickman (5-10, 180) will return as wingback. On the defensive side, leading tackler, Wickman, joins four other returning starters. Just like on the offensive side, it will be up to Wickman, who recorded 65 solo tackles and 28 assists last season, to assume the leadership role. This year’s defensive backfield is the experienced core. Linebackers Ethan
Navarre (5-9, 165) and Wickman, strong safety Bryant Fantroy, cornerback Brandon Fantroy (6-0, 175) and free safety Guidry all return for the Bulldogs this year. The defense will also likely have some growing pains with new starters as well, particularly on the defensive line. Defensive ends Jimmie Hillman (6-1, 185) and Reece Meyer (5-10, 190) as well as defensive linemen Matt Trahan (5-9, 245) and Taylor Duhon (5-11, 245) make up a brand new defensive line. Also new to their respective starting roles are outside linebacker Thomas Murrel (6-0, 185) and corner Ryan Chapman (5-11, 165). LeJeune stresses, however, that this season will be a team effort and the team is what will define this season. “We have our leaders, but we’re playing team ball,” he said. “It’s not one guy standing out in front of the other guy, we want to do well as a team.” LeJeune is fortunate enough to have players that he feels can play on both
sides of the ball. However, he hopes to limit that crossover as much as possible throughout the season. “Right now, we don’t have many of them playing both ways. We try to limit it as much as we can (players going both ways),” he said. “But with injuries and things like that we’ll start having that. It’s good for us though that we have some players that can do that.” The Bulldogs open up the season on Thursday, September 2 at home against 4-AA’s Vinton, who finished last year as division runner-up, and then home again for their St. Edmund game on September 10. St. Edmund finished last year in the middle of 5-A. Iota’s first away game will be at another 4-AA opponent, South Beauregard, on September 17. They will open up district play on September 24 versus Welsh. The Bulldogs will spend a great deal of October on the road with three of their five games away. They begin October on the road at divi-
sion foe Oakdale. Their other two away games during the month fall back-toback. On October 15, Iota travels to last year’s 5-AA champions Lake Arthur. The following week, October 22, the team will travel east to Livonia, who finished in fourth place in the 8-3A division. The Bulldogs do have two home games in October, “Senior Night” is slated for their October 8 home game versus Kinder and “Homecoming” is slated for October 29 versus Pine Prairie. Iota wraps up the season with an away division game. The Bulldogs will play at Mamou on November 5. “It’s a tough district and you’ve got to play hard every week,” said LeJeune. “Obviously you want to do well at home, but you’ve got to be able to compete in those hostile environments as well. You’ve got tough games throughout the district, home or away.” “But, at the end of the day you still have to play football. You have to play right and you have to play hard.”

Rayne depending on defense for 2010 campaign BY LISA SOILEAUX LSN STAFF WRITER
RAYNE – With a large number of underclassmen and a limited supply of returning starters for the 2010 football season, Rayne High Head Coach Curt Ware remains hopeful for a very competitive season. “As in past seasons,“ states Ware of the 2010 campaign, “Our strong point of this year’s team is our defense. If we continue to improve on defense, as we saw last week in the Opelousas Catholic scrimmage, we can be competitive this year.” Ware’s defensive depth falls on the shoulders of returning defensive end Andrew Abshire (6-0, 210 lbs.), linebacker Dylan Ware (5-8, 185 lbs.), tackle Tyler
Jennings (5-8, 240 lbs.), and defensive backs Aaron Chaisson (5-9, 160 lbs.) and last year’s interception leader Shelby Thibodeaux (5-9, 160 lbs.). The basic defensive set for the Wolves is again a 4-2-5. Last year’s tackle leader Abshire, with Shelby Thibodeaux leading in interceptions, both returning for this season. Completing Rayne’s defensive unit are a number of new starters who Ware will be relying on this season, including tackle Gavin Broussard (5-11, 245 lbs.), end Pat Charles (6-0, 235 lbs.), linebacker Lacy Granger (6-0, 180 lbs.), and backs Lukas Meche (5-9, 155 lbs.), Ben Harrington (59, 160 lbs.) and R.J. Buchanon (5-10, 155 lbs.). “If our key returners continue to im-
prove,” notes Ware on this year’s defense, “and our newcomers can step it up to that next level, I think we can hold our own.” Ware also returns a core number of dedicated offensive players, despite loosing a few key players at graduation. “We’re not returning much, but who’s back will help us a lot,” while overviewing his offensive squad. “We have a bunch of players out here that give it their best, what really counts when you’re out on the field.” On offense, six starters return, including All-District lineman Kyle Guthrie (61, 235 lbs.). With Guthrie at guard, he is joined by offensive tackles Jake Cormier (5-10, 250 lbs.) and Ty Mouton (6-0, 240 lbs.). SEE RAYNE WOLVES, PAGE 26

Of the remaining offensive starters are full back Brodie Bourque (5-11, 185 lbs.), who led in rushing yards last season, along with Jake Martin (5-9, 200 lbs.) at center, and Tre Leon (5-9, 185 lbs.) in the backfield at running back. Joining last year’s veterans are Quinn Guidry (5-9, 155 lbs.) at running back and backup quarterback, Dannie Harmon 6-2, 210 lbs.) at tight end, Macolm Winbush (510, 210 lbs.) fillling in at offensive guard, and Thaddeus Savoy (5-10, 160 lbs.) at split end. Ware will depend on sophomore quarterback Clarence Leger (5-10, 200 lbs.).
Lost to graduation was Tyler Venable who filled in at quarterback and punter for the past two years. Leger will run a wing-T offense with Bourque and Leon at running back, along with team mate Quinn Guidry who will also fill in on the receiving end. The Wolves will try to improve their 1-9 overall record of last year, and 1-4 in district play. Rayne’s competition again this season in 5-3A teams are Kaplan, Erath, Abbeville, North Vermilion, and returning Notre Dame. Rayne will travel to Church Point Thursday for the first night of this year’s Acadia-Vermilion Jamboree where they will meet Abbeville during the 6:30 p.m. contest.

Church Point faces rebuilding year in 2010 THE CROWLEY POST-SIGNAL
CHURCH POINT - The Church Point High School Bears will be rebuilding in 2010, says head coach John Craig Arceneaux. The Bears return just seven starters from last season‘s 5-5 team. Coach Arceneaux and his staff must replace all but four starters from their offensive unit. One of those returnees is senior running back Von Duplechain (5’2”, 130 lbs.), who will be a fourth-year starter for the Bears. Arceneaux calls Duplechain “one of the most productive backs in the state pound for pound.” Other returning starters include senior tight end Quinton Elliott (6’1”, 180 lbs.), junior split end Desmond Bellard (5’8”, 135 lbs.), and junior left guard Beau Baker (5”9”, 215 lbs.). Expected to start alongside Baker are junior tackles Taylor Moress (5’11”, 245 lbs.), and Josh Laverne (5’9”,

Arceneaux likes the athleticism of his defensive unit. “We will have to lean heavily on this unit in order to give our young offense an opportunity to work through some early season growing pains,” commented the Bears’ head coach. The Bears will once again be playing in District 4-3A. Last season they struggled in district play, finishing 1-4. In non-district action, the Bears were just the reverse, finishing at 4-1. District opponents will include Eunice, Crowley, Northwest, Westlake, and Iowa.
