it pertains to wedding ceremonies, traditions include expressing “Best Wishes” to the bride and a “Congratulations!” is appropriate for the groom. Brides seek out something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue. The “Cajun money dance” is when guests pin money to the bride’s veil or even her gown. Several brides change into a second outfit and reappear to throw her bouquet to the unmarried ladies before departing with her new
husband for the honeymoon. Perhaps interesting to the citizens of Crowley, the Rice Capitol of the World, there is a tradition which exists in India called Talambralu. The bride and groom playfully greet each other and pour rice over each other’s head symbolizing prosperity. Enjoy the Bridal Guide 2011. It is our hope that you get excited about entertaining, obtain fresh ideas and even start some of your own traditions.

First comes the marriage license When you have decided to marry, one of the first things on your list is to acquire a marriage license. Requirements vary from state to state and can and do change. You should contact your local county clerk/courthouse in the municipality where the ceremony will take place. Verify what documents you need in order to obtain your marriage license before you make the trip. Also allow yourself some time before applying, keeping in mind that in some states there is a waiting period. Planning ahead: Some states require a waiting period before the license is issued. You don’t want to cut yourself short on time. Identification: Some states require ID. Commonly accepted forms of ID are drivers’ licenses, birth certificates, social security cards and passports. Medical records: Some municipalities require blood tests or other medical records such as a physical exam. You may need to provide the results furnished by your doctor. Payment: There is a fee for the marriage license. Check with Acadia Parish first and
be prepared - some places will only accept cash in the exact amount. Presence: Many places expect both bride and groom to be there when applying to sign the application, sometimes a witness may be required as well. Additional rules and requirements: If you are under 18, you may need some kind of parental permission. (Sixteen or younger? You’ll probably need a judge’s consent). If you are divorced, chances are you need to bring your divorce decree. If your previous spouse has passed away, a copy of the death certificate may be required. Louisiana marriage requirements are a minimum age of 18; cost of marriage certificate, $27.50; waiting period, 3 days; valid for a period of 30 days; identification required is required, i.e. birth certificate/social security card; no blood test required, no residency required; birth certificate must be certified – no copies! Contact the Acadia Parish Clerk of Court to obtain your marriage license at 788-8881.

BY ANGELA BECNEL STAFF WRITER
RAYNE - Whether you are planning a wedding, simple birthday party, baby shower, graduation party or even an anniversary celebration, a cake is necessary for entertaining your larger crowds. “At Bakery Barn, our cakes are all made with quality ingredients and are always fresh.” Kris Martin attended the Wilton School of Cake Decorating Master Course and the Fondant and Gumpaste courses, eventually becoming a Wilton Method Instructor. “We can make that special cake and decorate it with buttercream or for a more elegant look we can use fondant.” Kris, a member of the International Cake Exploration Society, became a Wilton course graduate through Hobby Lobby in Lafayette. Kris recognizes brides’ frequently asked questions. What is Fondant? Fondant is rolled icing which is kneaded and softened, laid out on a surface and flattened with a rolling pin. Then is wrapped around a tier to take on its shape. “Fondant makes the cake prettier, more elegant.” explained Kris. What size bridal cake should be purchased for a certain number of people? Kris gave a couple of examples. “To feed 90 guests, a three tiered cake with a 10” layer at the bottom, an 8” layer at the middle and a 6” cake on top is the right size,” said Kris. “For 300 guests, a four tiered cake, starting with a 20” at the bottom is recommend-

ed. Then layer over it a 16”, 12” and top it off with an 8”cake would feed that many people.” The price would depend on the bride’s desires and the wishes of the groom. How can a cake be customized for the bride and groom’s own unique taste? Kris explained that there are many decorations, themes and colors which can be used creatively. “There can be an array of fresh flowers, gum paste flowers, royal iced (delicate, hard) flowers, buttercream flowers and edible pearls,” said Kris. “Or I can use satin, grosgrain or silk ribbon, and even a fondant ribbon.” Kris has mastered the basket weave pattern made of fondant ribbon, covering an entire cake tier. The Cake Barn is actually a barn which Kris renovated into a supremely modern bakery. It is located at 4668 Roberts Cove Road in Rayne. Kris can be reached at 783-2822 and 783-3386 or by e-mail at Kris@thecakebarn.com.

Makes the person look as beautiful as they can look
BY ANGELA BECNEL STAFF WRITER
CROWLEY - Edward Leger, originally from Rayne, has been interested in photography most of his life. He actually started shooting photographs when he was only eight years old. “My sister had a Canon AE1 35 millimeter camera,” recalls Edward. “Also, I was intrigued by the photos in the older versions of the Colliers Encyclopedia annual yearbooks.” He seemed even at a young age to question how the photographic work was done. “I have always had a love of the craft and an inquisitive nature,” said Edward. Today, Edward photographs brides all over the state as well as in Mississippi. He specializes in high-end photography, setting up the shot, setting the appropriate lighting. “I strive to make the person look as beautiful as they can look.” Edward Leger has been doing wedding portraits and wedding ceremony/reception photography since 2007. “Times have changed and some brides
request non traditional photographs, really pushing the limit.” Some brides want a fashion magazine shoot, and Edward Leger can deliver. Outdoor photography is most often requested. Apparently brides prefer different landscape backgrounds,
different locations. For more traditional needs, the indoor studio for Photographs by Edward is located at The Gallery at 222 North Parkerson Ave. “I will shoot whatever the bride desires,” states Edward who requests that people take a look at his work on his website and on Facebook. “Here, you can see how my photography differentiates itself. ” Photographs by Edward also shoots high school senior portraits, engagements, boudoir photography, landscape photography, festival queens and pageant queens. In fact, Edward has taken the official photo of over 60 pageant queens. When asked about his other accomplishments, this self taught photographer humbly informs that he is particularly proud that he has shot two book covers. One was for Random House and the other was a book on Louisiana Governors. His photo of the Louisiana State Capitol is on the front and the book was published by the University of Mississippi Press. For inquiries check out www.EdwardLeger.com or find him on Facebook under Edward Leger. He can also be reached on cell at 337-581-4882.

Point Aux Loups Ballroom provides a romantic setting THE CROWLEY POST-SIGNAL
IOTA - Whether it is a wedding beneath the autumn leaves of an old white oak nestled along the quiet and mysterious waters of the Bayou Des Cannes, or the romantic charm of an indoor candlelight ceremony hosted within a Victorian era decor, Point-Aux-Loups Springs Ballroom has an enchanted ambience to house your treasured event. Cradled within a wooded grandeur, while hugging the banks of Bayou Des Cannes, the grand ballroom and courtyard overlooks the cypress lined bayou which nestles an interesting history within its mysterious waters. While in the mid 1800s, the property itself hosted a popular resort with claims of icy cold healing springs, once discovered by American Indians during the Civil War. It is said that these healing springs would trickle forth from the ground in wait for anyone who believed in their healing powers. Three grand hotels were built to accommodate many visitors to the area, while resort bath houses bathed its tourist with tubs of heated spring waters. A New Year’s Eve Ball in the late 1800s invited visitors to bring in the new year along the mysterious waters of the Des Cannes. In 1907, it is said that the last of the healing waters trickled forth from the springs of Point-Aux-Loups due to the discovery and drilling of oil in nearby Evangeline, thereby, reducing ground pressure and lowering the water table. Today’s grand ballroom structure was originally built in the 1930s by the Louisiana Irrigation and Mills Company. The well-built brick structure once served as a main pumping plant servicing southwest Louisiana farmers with irrigation to their rice crops, but during the mid to late 1960s the plant was shut down due to high

maintenance cost. In 1990, the property was purchased from Althea Fisher Cart, a direct descendant of the original owners, and the property’s new owner, Debra Hebert began renovation procedures. By 1999, the restoration of the old pumping plant structure was complete, evolving at present day with the vaulted ceilings and Victorian era decor of the Point-Aux-Loups Springs Ballroom. The elegant springs ballroom features high ceilings throughout with a romantic accent of New Orleans custom style iron works and light fixtures, and opens up to a glassed room overlooking the banks of the Bayou Des Cannes With floor to ceiling windows, rococo furniture, and an eight foot tall chandelier with an aerate ceiling medallion, the elegance of a romantic era is sure to create a timeless treasure of memories to cherish for a lifetime. A rustic Orleans style porch adds to the enchantment of the ballroom along the Des Cannes Bayou while wrapping around the buildings structure with an invitation of intimate conversation or a quiet stroll. The romantic Cajun charm of this bayou landmark is sure to add southern elegance to your special event. Recently, the floors of the building have been redone and new wrought iron furniture decorates the grounds. With catering and house decor, your event will be stress free, while Hebert and her staff also provide a listing of photographers, cake decorators, musicians, and florists. For reservations call 779-3510. Note: Suggested reservation time is approximately six months to a year before your event to assure availability.

Let your future become a part of our history, The Crossing at Mervine Kahn in Rayne Hosting your event in this historic building adds romance
RAYNE - Proudly sitting along the railroad tracks at 113 Louisiana Avenue in the heart of downtown Rayne is the beautifully restored Mervine Kahn building, now known as The Crossing At Mervine Kahn. This historical building has seen families, businesses, and railroad cars come and go along its streets for over 125 years. In 1884, Michel Schmulen and Kahn opened their business in a small general merchandise store they had purchased. Two years later after the death of business partner Schmulen, the business became known as Mervine Kahn, which was a leader of commercial business for many years. For over 100 years, Mervine Kahn was the place to shop. It started out as a general mercantile store selling wagons, buggies, hacks and agricultural equipment, clothing, hats, shoes, foods, dry goods, notions, gents and ladies furnishing goods, hardware, tinware, crockery, furniture, paints, oils and accordions. At one point, an undertaking department complete with hearse and coffins
thrived; it was discontinued shortly before the World War I. By the mid 1900s, the store had become a department store and in 1952, a bridal salon was added. As various departments were discontinued, more space was given to remaining departments. The store ultimately grew to six buildings – joined together that was almost two-thirds of a block. Mervine Kahn was noted for their special events too. They sponsored cooking schools and demonstrations by representatives from firms it dealt with. At one point they had a drawing once a week. Mothers and their children crowded into the Mervine Kahn store to see who the lucky winner was that week. Whether it was a gift certificate, a discount on a certain item, everyone was thrilled at the prospect of being a winner. However, over time, Mervine Kahn’s became another sign of the times itself. Gradually some of the buildings and warehouses were sold off as business changed or declined. During the 1970s shopping malls and discount

stores began popping up everywhere and small towns like Rayne felt the effects of business leaving town. The oil business was booming and people wanted more. They now had the means to get what they wanted. Then, during the 1980s Louisiana was hit hard by the oil industry’s bust. People were accustomed to shopping elsewhere and they now frequented the discount and import stores. In order to make ends meet, most families were now two income families and that meant people shopped where they worked. They worked in larger communities, so they shopped in larger communities. It was more convenient for them. Unfortunately, that was bad news for Mervine Kahn Company. The end of a grand era was at hand. In 1989, Mervine Kahn’s closed its doors. Peter Comeaux operated an antique mall featuring antique dealers from the area for almost 20 years in the former Mervine Kahn building. Eventually, Comeaux wanted out of the business and he closed his doors in the end of 2008 after having sold the building to another

young entrepreneur from Rayne. The building was purchased by its current owner, Eric Thomas, on December 18, 2008. His dream was to restore the old beauty to some of her glory and to share her with others. “The Crossing at Mervine Kahn” has become an incredible venue for special events, wedding receptions, parties and meetings. With over twenty years in the catering and food service industry, Thomas has “mastered the experience” of giving top notch service. “We go above and beyond and there is no place like us,” says Rachel Guillory, event coordinator and marketing director. “Let your future become a part of our history.” “Another facility has opened to accommodate smaller parties of up to 175. We are opening a New Orleans style courtyard which will be connected to both existing and newer facilities,” continues Guillory. “This courtyard provides several options. The couple can marry outside or the guests can congregate outside during the reception.” The Crossing At Mervine Kahn features 13,745 square feet of space on the first floor which can be used as a whole space or can be divided up. There is an additional 10,075 square feet upstairs. The upstairs will feature private rooms for the wedding party and romantic jacuzzi suite for the bride and groom. There have been 50th and 60th wedding anniversary
