They were married three years later on the anni-­ versary of their first date. Charlie and Mary Joubert were introduced during a blind date. They were introduced by Joubert’s first cousin who was

a college friend of Mary. Mary said, “We dated for a year, then Charlie proposed, and we married two years later when I finished college.� The Jouberts have been married for 35 years. Their wedding date was November 22, 1975. They married at St. Edward Catholic Church

in Richard by Father F. Bourque. Bridesmaids includ-­ ed Tina Chachere McKissic, Linda C. Guilbeaux, Cindy Chachere Hidalgo, Rhoda Huckaby, and maid of honor was Geraldine Broussard Fuselier. Groomsmen were Harold Bertrand, Edward Joubert, Scott Hargroder, Lloyd Chachere,and best man Dale Latiolais. The couple took a honeymoon trip to New Orleans. The couple has three daugh-­ ters, Heather Joubert Bearb, Courtney Joubert and Katie Joubert Mayeaux, and four grandchildren, McKenzie, Jacob, Lauren and Mary Grace. Charlie’s proposal was a unique one. Mary said, “We were on our way to a friend’s engagement party. Charlie asked me to open the glove compartment and there, inside, was the opened ring box, and of course, he proposed.â€? The couple still enjoy married life after 35 years together. As we continued to date we knew sharing our strong Catholic faith and being a part of a big, close family was very important to both of us.” Charlie, a former deputy sher-­ iff, is employed with the St. Landry Parish School Board as a bus driver. He is also a hunting and obedience dog trainer. Mary retired after 33 years as a teacher at Highland Elementary and is presently teaching second grade at St. Edmund Elementary. The couple enjoy spending quality time with their children and grandchildren, “They give us so much pleasure. We also enjoy cooking a big meal and inviting friends and family to join us. We both love watching a good football game, whether it’s the Bobcats, Blue Jays, LSU Tigers or New Orleans Saints.”

Principal John Wendell Prudhomme of Central Middle School met his wife Yvonne G. Trevino while serving in a mutual friend’s wedding. He said, “We had the oppor-­ tunity to meet each other by serving at a wedding of some mutual friends of ours 18 years ago. Ironically, we managed to meet each other a second time at another wedding several years later.” The couple continued to date for three years, which was a long distance relation-­ ship between Houston where Yvonne is from and Eunice. Their first date included din-­ ner at a Chili’s Restaurant in Lake Charles. The Prudhommes are sec-­ ond time marriages and both are happy for a second chance at love. Wendell said, “I was attracted to Yvonne, not only for her outward beauty but for her inward beauty and person-­ ality.” Wendell proposed to his future bride by singing. He said, “It was nothing tradi-­ tional. I proposed to my wife by the tunes of R.Kelly “Forever”. I lip-­synced the song to her and at the end pulled out her ring.” The couple have been married for four years, and together have four children, Chassadie LeMelle, 26, Chelsie LeMelle, 23, Philip LeMelle, 18, and Brianna Carter, 14. They con-­ sider themselves grandparents also. Wendell explained, “We

do not have any grandchildren but we have a close member to the family that adopted us to be his grandparents. Julian, 5, lived with us for a while. He has our “grandparent kind of love” The Prudhommes were mar-­ ried on October 28, 2006 by Scurdy Menard, minister. Magellan Deville of Sunset and Melanie Allison of Eunice were the witnesses. Wendell laughed, “I picked this day because it’s payday and I would only have to remember we got married in October.” The couple did not take a hon-­ eymoon. Rather, they simply drove down the road, grabbed some boudin, cracklins and a six-­pack of Coronas. Wendell is Central Middle School’s principal and his wife has been employed at Mercy Regional Medical Center as an RN-­Education/Employee Health for one year. The couple enjoy travel-­ ing, exercising, spending time

with family, cooking and rid-­ ing motorcycles and are mem-­ bers of St. Mathilda Catholic Church in Eunice.

His outgoing personality, her bouncy ponytail, tied the knot 48 years ago Donald and Barbara Mayeux were definitely attracted to each other from day one. They first in the front of the LSU Library, introduced by a mutu-­ al friend in June of 1959. They were both 17; Don was from Mamou and Barbara Richard Mayeux was from Baton Rouge. Barbara said, “We met again the same evening at the Catholic Center’s Newman Club dance. The next day we were surprised to find out

that we were both in the same Books and Library class.â€? The couple dated for the next three years. Barbara was attracted by his outgoing per-­ sonality. “He was a nice man and a great dancer,â€? Barbara said. Don’s new girlfriend Barbara was a cute young lady, he claimed, “She also had a boun-­ cy ponytail and possessed a ‘cute little figure,’ and most of all she was easy to just talk to.â€? The Mayeuxs first date was

just a simple meeting. Barbara said, “Don didn’t have a car, so we met and visited on campus. Sometimes he would borrow a bike and ride saveral miles to my home. We did make dates to Rip’s Huddle by the levee in downtown Baton Rouge, and enjoyed dancing to the Platters and Fats Domino.� Don left LSU to attend Notre Dame University, but returned the following year to the Baton See Mayeux on Page 7

Rouge campus. Barbara recalls how hard it was to maintain their dating relationship. “He had already planned his fresh-­ man year at Notre Dame, but returned to LSU. Long-­ distance relationship letter writing was the only way we communicated. We never talk-­ ed on the phone that year. Long-­distance calls were not allowed by our parents; they were too expensive.” Don’s marriage proposal was a traditional one. The couple was picnicking at City Park in Baton Rouge. Don said, “This was a great place because Barbara loved nature. We ate fried chicken. She still remem-­ bers her sparkling diamond on her greasy fried chicken fin-­ gers!” Don redeemed himself later that evening as he took his future bride to an expen-­ sive Italian restaurant, “The Village.” The couple enjoyed a

romantic dinner. The couple was married at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, 1962 at Christ The King Catholic Church on the LSU campus. Barbara’s cousin the Rev. Kenneth Richard officiated. Maid of honor was her sis-­ ter Suzanne Richard; atten-­ dants were Judy Vicknair and Margaret Mayeux. Best man was Donald A. Mayeux, the groom’s father. Groomsmen were David Tate and Dale Richard. The couple took a honeymoon trip to Panama City, Fla. After college, Don joined the Air Force as an officer. The couple spent three years at McDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Fla. Upon completion of his tour, and by then proud parents of two daughters, Don entered LSU Law School while Barbara taught school. The Mayeuxs have five daughters, Michelle Lejeune of Eunice, Denise Sauviac of Baton Rouge, Monique Lake of Alabama, Yvette Marionneaux of Baton Rouge and Nicole

Akyuz of Georgia. They are grandparents of 11 and one on the way, due in March. The couple enjoyed many trips with their daughters, snow skiing in Colorado and swimming at beaches in Florida. Donald is an attorney, prac-­ ticing law for the past 42 and half years, and Barbara a housewife. The Mayeuxs treasure their marriage and life to the full-­ est. Barbara said, “Our great-­ est interests we share together are our faith and family. We love visiting with our children and grandchildren, babysit-­ ting, attending their special events. In the last 20 years we have traveled many places overseas on cruises and pil-­ grimages. A very special trip was to the Holy Land with the Rev. Jules Arceneaux. We also visited Marian Shrines in Lourdes, France, Fatima, Portugal, Guadaloupe, Mexico and another memorable trip was to Rome for the cannon-­ ization of Padre Pio in 2002.

These trips greatly increased our faith and sustained Don during his cancer over 13 years ago. “We feel very blessed by our family and the addition of men to our family by our great son-­ in-­laws and 11 grandchildren. We have had some real health

challenges in our family but have relied on our faith and trust in God and our many blessings in our 48 years of marriage.”

The couple were instantly attracted to each other. “I became attracted to her beauty, and after getting to know her, I became attracted to her beauty and intelligence,â€? said Patrick. Lakesha thought her beau was handsome. The couple got acquainted with each other over the next few months. Their first date was bowling at Acadiana Lanes in Lafayette. Patrick proposed to his girl-­ friend on one knee, “I had stopped by Patrick’s house after coming home on a college break. I was at the kitchen sink fix-­ ing a glass of water, when I turned and I saw him down on a bended knee with a ring in hand asking for me to marry him,â€? said Lakesha. The couple married on Aug. 27, 1994 after eloping. Lakesha said, “We went to Montego Bay, Jamaica, where we married at Sandals Resort in a gazebo near the ocean. There was a best man and a maid of honor who served in our wedding; however, we

did not know them personally. We were married by a Baptist minister who was a native of Montego Bay,â€? said Lakesha. The couple has three children, the late Genesis, Patrick Miller, Jr. and Matthew. Patrick has been employed as general manager of Giles, Volvo-­ Subaru in Lafayette for the past seven years, and Lakesha has been principal at Eunice Jr. High School for the past four

years. The Millers enjoy traveling and watching the New Orleans Saints. Lakesha said, “We enjoy each other’s company whether we are sitting in the backyard on a Sunday afternoon talk-­ ing and/or listening to music or watching the Saints play. We enjoy spending time with our kids and also with immediate family members.â€? The Millers live in Eunice.

After 36 years of marriage, the Richards laugh, travel and enjoy life

Mr. and Mrs. Charles “Chuckâ€? Richard, Jr., June 15, 1974 Charles “Chuckâ€? A. Richard, Jr. and Lise DeJean Richard have been married for 36-­and-­ half-­years and never had a dull moment. Lise and Chuck’s personalities and humourous natures clicked from the very beginning of their courtship.

Chuck’s first cousin Kenny Reed introduced the couple. “We were invited to a barbeque for a birthday celebration in Opelousas. Immediately we were attracted to each other and I thought of how friendly Chuck was in nature,� said Lise. Lise and Chuck Richard are

both from Opelousas, and con-­ tinued to date for the next seven months. Their first date took place at a post-­wedding party for one of Chuck’s cousins and they dou-­ ble-­dated with Chuck’s grand-­ parents as they needed a ride to the function. The couple married on June 15, 1974 in St. Landry Catholic Church in Opelousas. Fr. Gene Lafleur officiated over the ceremony. Maid of honor was Nadine Hayes Carlson, and other attendants included Deborah Culbertson, Juanita Guerin, Gail DeJean, Stacey DeJean as junior bridesmaid. Flower girls were Melanie DeJean and Audris Steinkampf; best man was Ronnie Richard, and groomsmen included Robert Walsh, Keith Miller, Al Richard, Steve Richard as junior grooms-­ man. Ring bearer was Andre’ DeJean, and ushers were Kenny Reed and Garrigues DeJean. The couple honeymooned in New Orleans and Panama City. The Richards are parents of four children, Brian Richard, Rachel Richard Martel, Rebecca Richard Dupre, and Brad Richard. They have eight grand-­ children, Caroline Martel, Tyler Martel, Gracie Martel, Emma-­ Claire Martel, Jack Dupre,

Blaire Dupre, Rylie Jo Richard and Britton Richard. Lise is a retired kindergarten elementary teacher at Eunice Elementary, retiring with 33 years of service. She is an active Pink Lady volunteer at Acadian Medical Center serving as pres-­ ident of the group, treasurer of Eunice Player’s Theatre, and a lector at St. Thomas More Church. Chuck serves as treasurer of Eunice Kiwanis Club and is a

member of Eunice Country Club and Indian Hills Country Club in Opelousas. Chuck retired in December of 2010 as Branch Manager and Sr. Vice President of St. Landry Bank with 38 and half years of service. The couple are enjoying retire-­ ment, as they travel, attend LSU sporting events, and spend time with family and friends.
