Sportsmanship should carry over to the stands By Tom Dodge tom.dodge@eunicetoday.com

I have been covering sports in St. Landry Parish since 1996 and I have met hundreds of great coaches and players who gave all they had to their sport. I have also sat in the stands next to fans who berate and cuss everything decision the coach makes and every mistake the athlete had. This poem I found several years ago explains how a parent feels when they hear fans curse at their son or daughter: Please Don’t Curse The Boy Down There Please don't curse the boy down there. He is my son, you see. He's only a boy, you know and means a lot to me. I did not raise my son, Sports Fan, For you to call him names.

He may not be a superstar, But it's really just a game. Please don't curse the boys down there. They do the best they can. They never tried to lose a game. They're boys - and you're a man. The game belongs to them, you see, And you are just a guest. They do not need a fan like you, They need the very best. If you have nothing nice to say, Please leave the boys alone. And if you can't enjoy the game, Then why don't you stay home? So please don't curse the boys down there, Each one's his parent's son. And win or lose, or tie, you see To us they're number one!!

Bobcats look to defend district title, make playoff run

A tough non-district schedule will test Eunice early on, but hopefully it will help prepare the Bobcats for another district title and a run in the Class 3-A playoffs. After struggling early in the season Eunice earned the District 3-4A title and downed John McDonogh 40-12 in the first round of the playoffs before falling to Redemptorist, 53-27 to finish last season at 7-5. With just three starters returning on offense and four on defense, the Bobcats will have plenty of new faces on both sides of the ball. “Our goal every year is to get better every week, try to compete for the district championship,” head coach Paul Trosclair ssaid. “We always try to get to the playoffs playing our best football of the season.” The only returning starter on the offensive line is senior Alex Toepher (6-1, 230) with seniors Lathan Prudhomme (5-10, 195), Jonathan Tucker (6-0, 200), Trent Vidrine (5-11, 215,) and Damien Morgan (6-0, 235) stepping up into starting roles this season. BOBCATS from Page 3A We are expecting Jonas to produce,” Trosclair said. “In our offense, he is the guy who will get the ball the most.” Last season, the Bobcats rushed for 2,715 yards and passed for 1,072 yards under the direction of quarterback Stuart Turner (1,019 yards passing and 10 touchdowns), running back Trey Ceasar (1,358 yards, 19 TDs), and receiver/returner/ defensive back Tharold Simon (661 yards receiving). The defense will be led by senior linebackers Vondray Vallere (6-1, 210) and Trey Godfrey (5-10, 210). Vallare, an all-district performer, racked up 110 tackles, nine for loss, three sacks and one interception. Godfrey had 100 tackles last season and is expected to perform well again this season. Damian Morgan (6-0, 240, Sr.) returns at defensive tackle

and will be a leader up front. Defensive back Trace Trosclair is the team’s lone returner in the secondary. Projected new starters include defensive backs Anthony Powell (5-1, 170, Sr.), Cade Blanchard (5-10, 185, Sr.) and Travis Woods (6-0, 180, Jr.) along with defensive linemen Phillip Lemelle (510, 230, Sr.), Clarkson and Trey Courville (6-0, 2-5, Jr.) “We have some quality athletes coming back,” the coach said of his team. “They didn’t get to play as much last year because we had such a large group of seniors.” After facing Beau Chene in the St. Landry Parish jamboree on Aug. 27, the Bobcats open the regular season at home against Opelousas High on Sept. 3. Eunice will face Jennings, Lafayette, Westgate and Notre Dame in non-district clashes. “Even if we play well, there may be some games we still struggle in,” he said. “But that will harden us for down the

road.” The Bobcats’ run to defend the District 3-4A title will include battles against Westlake, Iowa, Northwest, Crowley and Church Point. After a 1-4 start last season, the Bocbats went on a 5-0 run to win district. “We hope to get ourselves into position again to win another district championship,” the coach said. “Our schedule is tough and that could cause some problems. “But we had just come off two 11-wins seasons and it was hard to get teams to play us,” Trosclair said. “So we ended up with a schedule for two years. With our young team. we may struggle early. “If we come together as a team by midseason I think we can compete for the district title,” Trosclair said. “Crowley and Iowa are both supposed to be very good this year, but we have both of them at home.”

Opelousas Tigers about experienced team’s chances By John Burson Sports Writer OPELOUSAS - Can this be the year that the Opelousas High School Tigers turn the corner? That’s the hope of head football coach Mickey Autrey as he begins his third year at the helm of the largest school in St. Landry Parish. In 2009, the Tigers finished with an overall mark of 2-8, with a District 6-4A mark of 2-4. Actually, the 2-4 record in district play was a step up for the program, which has struggled to post wins over the past several years. There may be hope of winning more than two games in 2010, thanks to the return of 17 starters from last year. But, in order to move the program forward, Autrey must overcome a losing mentality that has plagued the Tigers over the past several seasons. There is experienced talent on the offensive side of the football, according to the head coach. That is especially true at the skill positions. Senior Jamal Rainey (5-11, 170) is back at quarterback to lead the Multiple I attack.

Returning with Rainey are senior tailback Quentin Malveaux (5-9, 175) and senior fullback David Houser (5-9, 180). Junior Ocean Grice (5-7, 140) will provide additional speed in the backfield. The wide receiver corps returns intact from last season. They are junior tight end Alex Eaglin (6-0, 175), senior split end Amad Redding (6-0, 165), and senior flanker McKenzie Porter (5-11, 170). Three offensive linemen return as starters in senior guards Roland Simmons (6-1, 185) and James Lewis (6-1, 255), along with senior right tackle Dylan Richard (6-5, 330). Probable new starters along the line are junior Caleb Rice (5-11, 240) at tackle and sophomore Aaron David (6-0, 295) at center. On offense, Autrey believes that the Tigers must become a more balanced attack in regard to the running game and the passing attack. On defense, the Tigers have moved to a 4-3 scheme. The most experienced area of the defensive unit will be the secondary where Porter, Redding, and Rainey will join junior cornerback Rashaun Pitre (5-8, 155)

as returning starters. At linebacker, the lone returning starter is senior Mark Bartholomew (5-10, 175). He’ll be joined by new starters Sherman Ford (5-7, 160), a junior, and sophomore Tremaine Sonnier (6-0, 225). There will a mix of experience and inexperience along the defensive front wall. Seniors Tevin Brown (6-1, 165) and Donald Brooks (5-11, 240) return as starters at end and tackle, respectively. Roland Simmons, at end, and David Freeman (5-11, 275), at tackle, will be the new starters. Special teams should be solid hands with the return of David Houser. Houser will punt, kick, and kickoff for the Tigers. Houser made four of five field goals last season. A key element for Houser is the return of deep snapper Caleb Rice. Autrey has a concern with the number of players that are two-way starters. “Several of

our younger players will need to step up to provide needed depth at key positions to give our starters some rest,” commented Autrey. “We can’t afford injuries to our key players as we do not

have large numbers.” The Tigers will be competing against Northside, Breaux Bridge, Teurlings Catholic, Cecilia, St. Martinville, and Beau Chene for District 6-4A honors.

JENNINGS - The Bulldogs rolled to an impressive 12-1 finish last season and Jennings is poised for another strong run this season with 15 returning starters. The Bulldogs’ offense is led by senior quarterback Bryson Abraham (5-11, 180) along with senior running backs Davondrick Phillips (5-9, 180) and Michael Wildridge (5-7, 180). Phil-

Phillips (5-10, 225, Jr.) and sophomore Payton Phelps (6-1, 211).

The linebackers will be Milton Hall (5-10, 190, Jr.) and Alex Daigle (5-10, 190, Jr.). Jennings opens the season with three trips to Crowley, Eunice and Iowa before facing

Lions looking to bounce back from 3-7 finish By John Burson Sports Writer

LAFAYETTE – Head coach Mark Barousse experienced a long season in 2009 as the Lafayette High Lions finished with a 3-7 record. Nine of 2009’s starters return for Barousse this season, and that could bode well for the Lions, who last made the state playoffs in 2007. On the downside, there are just two returning starters on the defensive side of the football. Among returning offensive starters is senior quarterback Jordan Romero (6-1, 170). Experience at quarterback

Westgate’s experience could prove beneficial in 2010 By John Burson Sports Writer NEW IBERIA – The Westgate High Tigers are looking to improve on last year’s 8-5 record thanks to a return of ten starters. Head coach Brian Fine, who has a career record of 125-86, hopes to lead his team into the 5A playoffs where it advanced to the quarterfinals in 2009. Offensively, the Tigers return six starters from 2009. Leading the way are junior running backs Brandon Malveaux (6-0, 190.) and D’nerius Antoine (6-0, 195). They will be supported by three returning offensive linemen in senior center Trey Pellerin (5-8, 195), junior guard Trey Cooks (5-10, 265), and senior tight end Corey Fontenette (6-0, 190). The other returning starter is senior wide receiver Fred Joseph (5-9, 165). The remainder of the offensive line will consist of sopho-

The Tigers will have to develop a number of new defensive starters, according to Fine. They will, however, return two starters at linebacker. They are senior Tyler Jackson (5-9, 180) and junior Eugene Livingson (5-9, 190). Those two will be joined by Bryson Broussard (58, 175), a sophomore. Along the defensive front, the lone returning starter is junior Duvall Jackson (6-2, 225) at end. New starters are junior end

Westgate opens the season with road trips to Breaux Bridge, St. James and Archbishop Shaw. The Tigers entertain Eunice High on Sept. 23 in their first of four home games. Westgate then faces Northside, Carencro and New Iberia. The Tigers close out the regular season on the road against

St. Thomas More and Comeaux.

CROWLEY – Coach Lewis Cook lost some outstanding talent from last year’s Class 3A State Championship squad. But don’t expect the Notre Dame Pioneers to fall out of state title contention in 2010. There is talent waiting to step in to fill the holes left by graduation, and Coach Cook and his staff know how to develop that talent. The Pioneers, who won the state title with a 14-7 victory over Parkview Baptist last December, lost 11 starters to graduation from a team that finished 15-0 on the season. On defense, the Pioneers return seven starters from a record-setting defensive unit. Cook must replace All-State linebacker D.J. Welter and AllState lineman Jacob Molbert as well as linebacker Hunter Stover, a UL-Lafayette signee. Seniors Fruge (5-10, 180) and Rothermel (6-2, 200) return at outside linebacker and middle linebacker, respectively. They will be joined in the three-man linebacker corps by new starter - junior Connor Gross (5-9, 170). The starting secondary returns intact from 2009. The all-senior group includes cornerbacks Luke Bourgeois (5-7, 165.) and Dylan Faul (6-0, 160), free safety Stoma (6-1, 170), and strong safety Kevin Johnson (5-9, 190). The major losses on defense come along the front line, where only senior tackle O’Dazio Thomas (6-0, 230) returns as a starter. Projected new starters along the line are senior ends Dylan Daigle (6-1, 190) and Jerry Menard (5-11, 185), and junior tackle Paul LaCroix (6-1, 200). On offense, the loss of Ryan Leonards at quarterback will be softened by the switch of junior Stu Cook (5-9, 185) to quarterback from tailback. Cook does have experience at the position, having three starts at quarterback in past seasons. The move of Cook to quarterback means that senior Logan Venable (5-9, 170) takes over at tailback, a spot he shared with Stu Cook last season. Senior Luke Besse (5-10, 185) is the new starter at fullback.

Westlake working to improve from 5-6 finish By John Burson Sports Writer WESTLAKE – After a disappointing campaign in 2009, head coach Max Caldarera hopes the return of 16 starters will result in a rebound season for the Westlake High Rams in 2010. The Rams finished with a 5-6 overall record, although they did earn a third-place finish in District 4-3A with a 3-2 mark. A state playoff berth ended in an opening round loss to Patterson. In 2010, the Rams’ defensive unit returns eight starters from 2009. Topping the list are firstteam All-District junior strong safety Justin Nordberg (5-9, 165) and first-team All-District defensive end Chase Schuck (63, 250). Other returning starters include junior outside linebacker Zack Vincent (6-0, 170), senior inside linebacker Alex Hardy (5-11, 190), and junior inside linebacker Devin Eaglin (5-10, 210). A new starter in the four linebacker corps will be senior Donald Shillow (5-9, 170). Schuck heads the defensive line at end, but the other end appears up for grabs going into fall practices. The new starter at nose guard is senior Trent Toups (510, 215). Nordberg leads the secondary and is joined by senior Tyler Stoddard (6-2, 200) and senior cornerback Reggie Lastrapes (6-0, 168) as returning starters. Senior Chance Stevens (5-11, 160) will be a new starter at cornerback. It appears that the offensive strength of the Rams will be along the line where all the 2009 starters return. Toups will be a dual starter as he returns at center. The guards are senior Gabe Spikes (6-0, 225) and junior Tommy Foy (5’-11, 195.) and the tackles are senior Jordan McBride (6-2, 235) and junior Ben Myers (6-1, 200). In the skill positions, Stoddard returns as the slot back,

but the other spots will be manned by new starters. Junior Ryan Feagin (5-10, 165) takes over at quarterback, with Nordberg and Eaglin taking over at the other running back positions. Seniors Randy Hesse (6-3, 170) and Jaylin Hadnot (6-1, 260) are potential new starters at wide receiver and tight end. “A lot of our skill positions will be young with junior varsity experience,” commented Caldarera. “Hopefully our offensive line will allow the young skill players to grow up.” District 4-3A will once again be tough, says the Westlake head coach. Crowley, Eunice, Iowa, Church Point, and Northwest will compete with Westlake for district honors.

Yellow Jackets enter Richard era with great expectations By John Burson Sports Writer

IOWA – The Iowa High School Yellow Jackets managed to sneak into the state 3A playoffs in 2009 after a fourth-place finish in District 4-3A and a 5-5 overall record. But first-year head coach Sean Richard is taking over at the right time as the Yellow Jackets return 16 starters from last year’s 5-6 team. Eight of those starters return on the offensive side of the football. Topping the list is senior quarterback Gene Pete (6-1, 215). Pete led the Jackets in both rushing and passing in 2009. Pete rushed 110 times for 687 yards and 10 touchdowns while passing for 1,295 yards with 13 touchdowns. The only downside for Pete was the fact that he threw 14 interceptions. Aiding Pete this year is the return of five of six offensive linemen from 2009. Included are senior tight end Dylan Williams (6-6, 205), senior center Michael Simien (6-0, 245), junior tackle Joel Smith (5-10, 230), and ju-

nior guards Kane Fontenot (6-0, 265) and Blake Vidrine (5-11, 230). The other two returning offensive starters are senior tailback Jamar Chretien (5-6, 160) and junior wide receiver Donovan Guillory (5-8, 165). First-time starters are sophomore split end Brian Bellard (5-10, 160), senior right tackle Ben Gupton (6-1, 260), and senior fullback Robert Moss (5-10, 240). Senior Dylan Prudhomme (60, 190.) will see playing time in relief of Chretien. In addition to the experience returning on offense, the defensive unit matches the number of returning starters with eight. That includes the entire starting defensive line from 2009 – senior ends Josh Denison (510, 205) and John Paul Lebleu (6-0, 225) along with tackles Christian Stewart (5-10, 225.) and Andrew Papion (5-11, 180). Stewart is a senior and Papion is a junior. Both inside linebackers in the Jackets’ 4-2-5 alignment will be new starters. They are senior Daniel Tran-

them (5-9, 160) and sophomore Cody Trim (5-9, 160). The strong and weak safeties will be manned respectively by Derek Johnson (6-0, 160), a returning senior starter, and Tyler Leonard (6-0, 150), a first-time senior starter. In the deep secondary, the Jackets will return Pete at free safety. Cornerbacks Sean Celestine (5-10, 170) and Kristone Brown (5’-10, 150) are both returning starters from last season. Senior Matt Guidry returns as the place kicker after hitting 20 of 23 PATs in 2009. Iowa opens the season at Abbeville before three straight home games against Bunkie, Jennings and South Beauregard. The Yellow Jackets then visit Kaplan before opening District 4-3A at Crowley. Iowa visits Eunice on Oct. 15. The Yellow Jackets host Church Point before visiting Northwest. Iowa closes out the regular season at home against Westlake.

Northwest Raiders ready to rebound from 1-9 season

PRAIRIE RONDE - Northwest went 1-9 in 2009 but the Raiders are expecting to do much better this season with 15 returning starters and a different approach on both sides of the ball. According to head coach Yves Prince, the Raiders are moving from a spread offense to the I formation and will run the ball more this season. “We are excited about the season and the kids worked hard this summer,” Prince said. “Everybody who picks Northwest for homecoming better watch out - we are coming to play.” The returning starters on the offensive line include center Dustin Richard (5-11, 235, Sr.) and right guard Nick Thierry (5-11, 250, Jr.). Zaroni Stevens (6-1, 230, Soph.) and Angelo Joseph (610, 440, Sr.) will step up at left tackle and left guard. “This one of the first year that we have had size,” the coach commented. “Last year we spread it out, but this year we are going to pound the ball.” Henry Senegal (6-0, 175, Soph.) will direct the offense after he completed 61-of-105 for 514 yards with five interceptions and six touchdowns last season. Joining Senegal in the backfield are running backs DeQuincy Jones (5-9. 170, Sr.), Joskie Frank (6-1, 190, Sr.) and full back David Metz (6-0, 205, Sr.). “We are hoping to run the football at people this year,” Prince said. “We want to control the clock, gain three or four yards before we break one for a big play.” Quinton Guillory (5-11, 180, Jr.) will play tight end, while Kiavani Shexnayder (6-1, 170, Soph.) and Lattrakas Jackson (6-2, 170, Soph.) will see action at wide receiver for the Raiders. “Defensively, we have most of our starters back from last year that including 13 freshmen and sophomores so we have more

experience,” he said. The defensive front has O’Non Coleman (6-0, 215, Sr.) and Theirry along with George Fontenot (5-1, 240. Sr.). The linebackers are Dustin Richard (5-11, 235, Sr.), Travis Brooks (6-10, 195, Jr.) and Frank. The defensive backfield includes Jeremy Winfield (5-10, 180. Sr.), Damarius Pierre (5-9, 160, Fresh.) and Senegal. Frank will do both the punting and kicking duties this season after just kicking in 2009. The Raiders open the season against parish rival North Central before visiting Opelousas Catholic and Mamou. After home games against Port Barre and Jeanerette, the Raiders hope to improve on last year’s 0-5 distrtict struggles when Northwest opens District

4-3A action at Church Point on Oct. 8. The Raiders then visit Westlake before entertaining Eunice on Oct. 22. NWHS closes out the regular season at home against Iowa and a road trip to Crowley.

CROWLEY – The Crowley High Gents expect to be a key player in District 4-3A in 2010 under head coach Tommy Tate. Tate, who begins his fourth season as head coach, posted a 9-3 overall record in 2009; his best as the Gents’ head coach. In district play, the Gents finished 4-1 to finish second in the district standings behind the Eunice High Bobcats. The Gents are returning 13 starters from that 2009 team, led by senior quarterback D’Myrus Daniels (6-2, 215). Daniels was named the 4-3A Offensive MVP by the coaches last season after he rushed for 787 yards and 15 touchdowns while passing for 1,402 yards and 10 touchdowns. According to Tate, Daniels, who has turned in a 4.8 time in the 40, is a prospect to continue his football career at the next level. Daniels will have some help in the return of senior running back Tonori Boutte (5-11, 175). Tate believes that Boutte, who has been clocked at 4.4 in the 40, has a future at the next level as well. Boutte caught 16 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns last season, playing both running back and wingback. Leading the Gents’ offensive line is senior guard Devin Hebert (5-11, 225), a first-team AllDistrict selection in 2009. He’ll be joined by four other returning starters along the line. They are junior tight end Kye Daigle (6-1, 185), senior tackle Shawn Guidry (6-1, 220), junior center Jude Cradeur (5-10, 225 lbs.), and junior tackle Kaleb Potier (6-2, 230). The new starter along the line is senior guard Aaron Miller (5-10, 210). Three other new starters on offense include junior split end Kaleb Cormier (6-4, 215), junior running back Devonte Bourque (6-2, 215), and junior wide receiver Cade Abshire (6-1, 170). On defense, six of 2009’s starters are set to return for the Gents. Leading the way is junior rover Tuskani Figaro (6-2, 210), who earned first-team AllDistrict honors last season with

CHURCH POINT - The Church Point High School Bears will be rebuilding in 2010, says head coach John Craig Arceneaux. The Bears return just seven starters from last season‘s 5-5 team. Coach Arceneaux and his staff must replace all but four starters from their offensive unit. One of those returnees is senior running back Von Duplechain (5-2, 130), who will be a fourth-year starter for the Bears. Arceneaux calls Duplechain “one of the most productive backs in the state pound for pound.” Other returning starters include senior tight end Quinton Elliott (6-1, 180), junior split end Desmond Bellard (5-8, 135), and junior left guard Beau Baker (5-9, 215). Expected to start alongside Baker are junior tackles Taylor Moress (5-11, 245), and Josh Laverne (5-9, 225), sophomore right guard Jarod Savoy (5-9, 210), and senior center Ryan Obrer (5-6, 232). Sophomore quarterback Ty Leger 5-11, 145) will direct the Wing-Toffense at quarterback. In addition to Duplechain, Leger will joined in the backfield by fullback Zack Quebodeaux (5-10, 230), a senior, and halfback Jacob Boone (5-7, 150), a junior. On defense, the Bears will be led by first-team All-District nose tackle John Leger (5-6, 235), a senior, and sophomore tackle Dexter Charles (6-1, 285). “Leger and Charles are very athletic and will be very valuable in helping stop the run,” said Arceneaux. Leger is a returning starter from 2010. Junior defensive end Brett Thibodeaux (6-2, 175) returns as starter along the line. Junior Ryan Doucet (5-10, 185) joins Charles at tackle, with sophomore Tanner Higginbotham (57, 150) is a new starter at the other defensive end spot in the Bears‘ 50 defensive alignment. Tigers look to improve from 9-4 finish By John Burson Sports Writer Following what many fans felt was a disappointing 9-4 finish last season, Head Coach Les Miles of LSU signed a recruiting class of 27. The question, though, is will those players have an impact on this season, which some sportswriters claim is a decisive one for Miles’ future at LSU? The answer to Miles’ future at LSU may lie these questions – can junior quarterback Jordan Jefferson step up his play after a year of experience; or is there another viable alternative if Jefferson can’t? Jefferson, who threw for 17 touchdowns with just seven interceptions, will need to take more responsibility for the offense, improve his accuracy and find his identity in order to be the leader of a team that is stacked with talent and is chopping at the bit to have an explosive push up the SEC rankings and be seen as a contender for this year’s SEC championship. If he struggles, can Jarrett Lee step in and direct the offense? But it’s not just the quarterback position that needs to be addressed on offense. The Tigers must be able to run the football effectively, no matter who quarterbacks. The Tigers were woeful in the rushing game in 2009. If the offense is going to win games this season, LSU will need to return to its past by dominating the line of scrimmage. The Tigers will return Stevan Ridley and Richard Murphy, although Michael Ford may have the most talent. They will also have young, but talented true freshmen running backs in Spencer Ware, Jakhari Gore and Alfred Blue. Ware, from Cincinnati is poised to make an impact with his cutback ability, strength and pure determination. It has been said he can make something out of nothing and is tough to bring down. Gore from Miami, may not have the size but he has the speed and elusiveness to make plays. Blue, from Boutte, is

quick on his feet and with improved power. This trio will need to adapt quickly to the college level. But the running backs were just part of the problem last season. The offensive line needs to be able to open holes in the defense to allow the backs to get going. That didn’t happen much in 2009. Tackle Joseph Barksdale and guard Josh Dworaczyk return as starters, with P.J. Lonergan and T-Bob Hebert fighting for the starting center spot. Alex Hurst and Will Blackwell have the inside track to start at the other tackle and guard spots, respectively. Chase Clement and Deangelo Peterson should provide athleticism at tight end. With four wide receivers graduated, this is an area which needs to be addressed. The Tigers do return leading receiver Terrance Toliver (53 catches and 735 yards), who has big play capability. Reuban Randle and Russell Shepard appear to have the talent to make significant progress based on their limited playing time last year. New recruits Kadron Boone and James Wright could also contribute right away as part of the receiving corps. The loss of seven defensive starters will need to be addressed, but another year under defensive coordinator John

Chavis should bring improvement to this unit despite those losses. Recruits from the 2009 class such as Sam Montgomery (DE), Michael Brockers (T), and Kevin Mintner (LB), and Morris Claiborne (CB) should help to fill the holes. Additionally, Kelvin Sheppard will return for his senior season. Sheppard was ranked fourth best in the SEC in 2009 with 110 tackles. Veterans Lazarius Levingston (DT), Drake Nevins (DT), Patrick Peterson (CB) and Brandon Taylor (S) should join with the youngsters to make the Tigers a formidable defensive unit in 2010. Special teams should be solid, especially with the return of kicker Josh Jasper and punter Derek Helton. Ron Brooks should provide a solid threat as the punt and kickoff returner. LSU opens the season against North Carolina in Atlanta on Sept. 4. The Tigers then visit Vanderbilt before entertaining Mississippi State, West Virginia and Tennessee. A road trip to Florida will be followed with a home game against McNeese State University on Oct. 16. LSU visits Auburn and then hosts national champion Alabama on Nov. 6. The Tigers also entertain UL Monroe at home before visiting Ole Miss. LSU closes out the regular

Cajuns hoping for break-through season

LAFAYETTE - The University of Louisiana at Lafyette Ragin’ Cajuns have been on the brink of a postseason berth for the last several seasons and they may be able to take that elusive final step in 2010. But the Cajuns will have to perform better in the Sun Belt Conference race after a rough non-conference schedule could put UL in a tough situation early on. The Cajun defense may be their best chance for a decent season, but the offense has to improve to get past a 6-6 finish again. UL managed only 22.2 ppg in 2009 and the hope for improvement comes from the return of quarterback Chris Masson, who turned in a solid campaign in his first year as the starter in 2009. The 6-2, 201-pound Masson threw for 2,406 yards, the fourth-highest total in school history, but had just 10 touchdowns against eight picks. Masson will benefit from a dangerous group of wideouts, as well as a talented tight end in Ladarius Green. A Mackey Award candidate, Green (6-6, 225) led the Cajuns with 533 receiving yards. Marlin Miller (5-11, 189) returns after leading the club with 37 catches and the speedy wideout will also see some carries in the backfield.

Freshman Robert Walker, from Mamou, had a great spring and should help the Cajun running game along with junior Julian Shankle, freshman Aaron Spykes and junior college transfer Kevis Streeter. The biggest concern on offense it the line, as the Cajuns must replace three starters and there is a lack of depth up front. Colin Windsor, Leonardo Bates, Ian Burks, Jaron Odom and Jonathan Decoster are the projected starters. The Cajuns made some strides on defense last season and lead the Sun Belt in interceptions with 16. Overall, the defense forced 26 turnovers last year, ranking in the national top 30. With seven starters retutning, the strength of the defense is the linebacking corps with Grant Fleming and Daylon McCoy. Fleming (6-2, 232) had 89 tackles and forced three fumbles last year, while McCoy (6-0, 215) posted 55 tackles last season. Defensive end Terrell Richardson and tackle Derreck Dean should help lead an inexperienced group up-front. Both corners are back in junior Dwight Bentley (5-11, 173) and Orkeys Auriene, who combined for 103 tackles and five interceptions. Seniors Maurice Rolle Jr. and Orkeys Auriene and junior and Lance Kelley all have starting

experience in the secondary. Rolle and Bentley had three interceptions each. Kicker Tyler Albrecht made good on 8-of-11 field goals, including a game-winning 48-yarder as time expired to upset Kansas State. Punter Spencer Ortego returns after he earned first-team all-league honors after averaging 40.6 yards per attempt in 2009. He allowed only 21 of his 66 punts to be returned and had 15 downed inside the 20. Aside from making kicks, the Cajuns have been terrific at blocking them, registering 41 over the last eight seasons. "I'm expecting what they're expecting," head coach Rickey Bustle said, referring to players who have expressed confidence they will contend for their first Sun Belt title since sharing the 2005 crown with Arkansas State and ULM. "I'm expecting to win this conference and compete for the title." The Cajuns open at Georgia on Sept. 4. After the trip to Athens, the Cajuns return home for their conference opener against Arkansas State, then after a week off will host Sun Belt favorite Middle Tennessee - so the Cajuns’s chances for a conference ring could be determined pretty early in the season. The Cajuns then visit North Texas before entertaining Okla-

homa State on national television on OCt. 8. The Sun Belt Conference race continues for the Cajuns with a trip to Troy followed by a home game against Western Kentucky. Tests away from conference are trips to Ohio and Ole Miss.

The Cajuns close the regular season with a trip to Florida Atlantic and a battle at home against Florida International. UL Lafayette visits UL-Monroe on Nov. 27 in the finale.

LAKE CHARLES - Defense will be a strong point for the defending Southland Conference co-champion McNeese State Cowboys this season with all 11 starters returning. Actually, only 10 of those who started the last game of the 2009 year return but linebacker Deron Minor, who was a starter at the first of the year until sidelined with an injury, is also back. The key for the Cowboys will be if the defense can carry the load until the offense catches up. And, a key to that side of the ball will be the quarterback position where four year starter Derrick Fourroux has graduated leaving the post wide open. Besides Minor, headliners on defense are expected to be tackle Desmund Lighten and free safety Malcolm Bronson. Minor was a pre-season allleague pick last season but was injured in the Tulane game and sat out the rest of the season. Lighten was a first team allSLC selection a year ago after ranking second on the team in tackles with 77 and setting a school record by recovering two fumbles for touchdowns. Bronson was also a first team all-SLC pick in 2009 and received rookie of the year honors after he led the team in tackles with 89 and made two pass interceptions. Other returnees claiming allconference honors on defense last year for the Cowboys are safety Darrell Jenkins and cornerback Seth Thomas, linebacker Geremy Pilate, ends Josh Ellison and Terrance Freeman. The other starters back are tackle Damion Aultman, buck safety Ford Smesny and cornerback London Durham. The only starters returning on offense are tackles Miguel Gauthreaux who is also a returning all-conference pick and Taylor Johnson and center Mase Duge. Besides Fourroux the Cowboys also lost all-American running back Toddrick Pendland, all-league tight end Wes Mangan and all-league offensive tackle Casey Richter. Champlain Babin, who rushed for 395 yards and a 6.0 average

last year, and Marcus Wiltz, up from the redshirt ranks, are expected to handle the tailback posts along with Michigan State transfer Andre Anderson, while there are four vying for the starting quarterback role. McNeese added some experience at the quarterback post during the summer when graduate student Jacob Bower enrolled. Bower saw playing time the past two years at Tulsa. Zack O’Quinn, Cody Stroud and Blake Barousse all got in spring action but none have taken a snap in a real collegiate game. Corday Clark, who caught 26 passes for five touchdowns last year, will step in at tight end and the Cowboys will have a good group of players at wide receiving including 6-3 Damion Dixon, 6-2 Chris Royal, 5-11 Bernardo Henry and 6-2 Deviontae Edmonson. Jonathan Landry (293) and Marcus Bellow (295) are expected to be the other starters. Josh Lewis, who booted eight field goals and 44 (of 49) PATs last season, returns as the team’s place kicker while Ben Bourgeois and incoming freshman James Bice will handling the punting. The Cowboys will play two FBC schools, traveling to play Missouri on Sept. 11 and then meeting LSU in a historic game (first FCS instate school to play the Tigers) Oct. 16 in Baton Rouge. Matt Viator is now in his fifth season as head coach and in the past four years has produced three SLC titles along with three appearances in the FCS post season playoffs. Viator has guided the Cowboys to a Southland Conference football championship and into the NCAA Division I championship in three of his four years as head coach at McNeese State. His 2007 team posted only the fourth undefeated, untied regular season record in the university’s history, won the league title for a second year and participated in the NCAA FCS championship for a second straight year. Viator had taken over the head job four games deep into the 2006 season, went 6-2 the rest of the way, won the SLC title and put his team into the NCAA FCS championship. His coaching record is an outstanding 33-10 and his teams have lost only seven regular season games. In conference competition only, his teams have a 22-5 mark. He claimed his first collegiate coaching victory in his very first game as head coach when the Cowboys posted a 30-27 win over Southern Utah in 2006. Viator is the 14th head coach in McNeese history. Southern Jaguars begin new era under Michell BATON ROUGE – Long-time Southern head coach Pete Richardson will not be roaming the Southern sidelines after 17 seasons as their head coach. Richardson left with a 134-62 overall record including five national black college championships. The Jaguars went 6-5 last year including a late-season slide with losses to rival Grambling (31-13) in the Bayou Classic and at Texas Southern (3025). Enter Lyvonia “Stump” Mitchell, who has 21 years of NFL experience to the job and will be expected to bring back the glory to the Jaguar nation. All-American defensive back,

Jason House, along with offensive lineman, Ramon Chinyoung, were tabbed to repeat as first team All-SWAC selections. Offensive lineman Chris Browne, along with punter Josh Duran were preseason second team selections. Former Eunice High star Duran was solid as a punter (41.3) last year. Freshman William Griswold, to handle kicking chores, allowing Duran to concentrate on punting. The Jaguar defense returns five of the top six tacklers from last season. Senior tackle Jordan Miller, who led the Jags in sacks last year and is the top returning

tackler in the front line. Returning starter Steven Williams and UL Monroe transfer Casey Narcisse will bolster that front line along with the return of senior Dexter James. Andre’ Coleman, SU’s top tackler last year with 68, returns to head up a linebacker corps. He will be joined by returnees Justin Fletcher, Marcus Clark and Gary Chatman. Jason House led the nationwith 10 interceptions and 230 yards in interception returns to direct the secondary. Southern fans are used to high-scoring offenses and Mitchell seems ready to keep the spread attack alive.

Grambling expecting a run for SAWC championship GRAMBLING – A 7-4 finish and a win over rival Southern in the Bayou Classic should be considered a successful season. But not for Grambling State University. GSU was picked to win the Southwestern Athletic Conference last year and contend for the black college national title. But the Tigers lost Prairie View A&M 35-32 and Prairie View went on to claim the league title. So in Rod Broadway’s third season, the Tigers are expecting to make a run at the SWAC title if they can fill a few important spots. Quarterback Greg Dillon (1,747 yards, 13 TD’s in 2009) was denied a sixth year of eligibility . Now the offense is in the hands of sophomore Danny Reyes, who played in only two games last year and threw only 12 times. The defense is without senior SWAC Defensive Player of the Year Christian Anthony who was sent to the hospital with chest pains this summer and some news reports said he suffered an apparent heart attack. Anthony earned All-America honors after leading the SWAC linemen in solo tackles (55) and

overall tackles (76) last year, and snared five interceptions, returning two for touchdowns. The Tigers should be able to run the ball well with Frank Warren and Cornelius Walker at running back.

Likely starter Jeremiah McGinty, meanwhile, saw only occasional duty and only threw five passes in 2009. Lee Almanza and Ramon Chinyoung, an all-SWAC selection, head up the offensive front , while Curry Allen heads up a new-look receiver corps as the third-leading pass catcher from last season. At the SWAC Media Days, the Prairie View Panthers garnered 17 first place votes and outdistanced second-place selection Grambling State by 25 total tallies. Texas Southern finished third, 11 votes shy of Grambling, while Southern and Arkansas-Pine Bluff were predicted a distant fourth and fifth, respectively.

In his place, the Saints signed veteran end Alex Brown from the Chicago Bears. Free agent lineman Jimmy Wilkerson and rookie Al Woods of LSU should add even more depth to the line. Jonathan Vilma anchored the Saints linebacking corps in the middle. Vilma led the team in tackles with 130 and was named to the Pro Bowl. Scott Shanle had over 100 tackles as the weakside linebacker. Scott Fujita left in free agency at the strongside spot. Veteran Troy Evans will compete with youngsters Jo-Lonn Dunbar and Jonathan Casillas to replace Fujita. Clint Ingram, a free agent from Jacksonville, could also compete for that spot. The secondary showed great depth in 2009, with veteran Darren Sharper leading the way with nine interceptions at free safety. Strong safety Roman Harper was a huge force for the defense, while cornerbacks Porter and Jabari Greer solidified an area that was historically a problem for the Saints. Veteran Randall Gay and rookie Malcolm Jenkins were solid backups at cornerback, as were vets Pierson Prioleau, Usama Young, and Chris Reis at safety. The importance of a ground attack by committee proved to effective in 2009. Pierre Thomas led the ground game with 793 yards for a 5.4 average. Reggie Bush was effective with 390 rushing yards to go with 335 receiving yards in sharing time in the backfield. Lynell Hamilton, who showed promise last season, should replace Mike Bell, who was lost to free agency. Returning from injury is veteran fullback Heath Evans. The wide receiving corps had a standout year in 2009. Marques Colston had 70 catches for 1,074 yards and nine touchdowns. Devery Henderson had 51 for 804 yards, with Robert Meacham pulling in 45 passes for 722 yards and nine touchdowns. Lance Moore was limited by injury but should be healthy this season. Not to be forgotten is tight end Jeremy Shockey, who caught 48 passes for 569 yards. On defense, the Saints forced 39 turnovers in the regular season under first-year coordinator Gregg Williams. Under their leadership, the coaching staff turned in a great season. The coaching and talent are there for another Super Bowl run, but it is a new year, and now the Saints have the target on their backs. Enjoy the season and let it all play out. The season begins Thursday, Sept. 9 with a rematch of the NFC title game against the Minnesota Vikings. A Monday Night Football trip to San Francisco is followed with home games against Atlanta and Carolina. The Saints travel to Arizona and then Tampa Bay before returning to the Superdome to face Cleveland and Pittsburg. A visit to Carolina will be followed with a week off. The Saints will then battle Seattle at home before a Thursday night trip to Dallas on Nov. 25. New Orleans will then visit Cincinnati before hosting St. Louis. After road trips to Baltimore

and Atlanta, the Saints will close out the regular season on Jan. 2 at the Superdome against

Blue Jays begin David era By Tom Dodge tom.dodge@eunicetoday.com Over the past two years, the Blue Jays have experienced both the thrill of a 9-1 season and the agony of a 3-6 finish. For first year St. Edmund head coach Thomas David, he is hoping the wins come back this season. David, 40, is a 1989 graduate from Central Catholic of Morgan City and a 1995 Nicholls State alumni moved to Eunice from Holdenville, Okla. David is the sixth St. Edmund athletic director since 1998 as he replaces Tom Andrus who compiled a 22-10 record in the past three football seasons. David said he is impressed with the athletic tradition at St. Edmund and understands the struggles of 2009 overshadowed the impressive 9-1 season of 2008. “They were on the road six out of nine games and then on top of that they had a bunch of injuries,” he reflected. “That took a potentially good season and put it in the tank. They had a lot of unfortunate things and hit then all at the same time.” David said he is hoping the winning tradition returns this year for the Blue Jays. “This program is nor lacking anything as far as the way it was run,” the coach said. “Coach Andrus did a good job and he did not leave the team in disarray.”

David said the steps to getting back to winning begins with his senior group. “We have a chance to be successful with a good senior class as they know what it takes to win.” The offense was expected to be led by senior quarterback Doug Zaunbrecher, but he is still recovering from off-season surgery. Junior David Scott LaFleur and senior Hunter Arnaud will take over the Blue Jay offense. “They are both capable quarterbacks,” David said. “They are both good athletes. “With the chance of injuries we may need all three guys at one time or another this season.” The running game will be led by seniors Adam Wimberly and Robert Sanders along with sophomore Austin LaFleur and senior Ethan Brown. “If we do a decent job of blocking up front we have plenty of different guys who can run the football.” Senior Adam Clause is s speedy threat at receiver but the Blue Jay coach said he is excited the other receivers including William Aucoin and Brent Bergeron. Other receivers are also talented with seniors Kevin McFarlain and Taylor Wallett along with juniors Andre Aguillard, and Trey Quirk. The offensive line will include seniors Dylan Gaspard, Trevor

BASILE – Head Coach Tony Bertrand led his Basile High Bearcats to the state playoffs in 2009 and, with 12 of those starters set to return in 2010, the Bearcats are in great shape to make a repeat trip to the playoffs. The Bearcats return five of those starters on offense, including junior fullback Dylan Matte (5-11, 220). Matte rushed 130 times for over 700 yards and 13 touchdowns last season. Senior Drake LeDoux (5-9, 145) returns at wide receiver after catching 19 passes for 154 yards in 2009. Three offensive linemen join LeDoux as returning starters. They are senior guards David Fontenot (5-11, 185) and Jacob Veronie (5-10, 180), along with junior tackle Nick Cortez (6-2, 240). Rounding out the offensive line are senior tight end Nick Bertrand (6-1, 190), junior left tackle Garrett McClelland (510, 205), and junior center Wyatt LeDoux (6-0, 195.). Sacred Heart’s experience should help this season By John Burson Sports Writer

VILLE PLATTE – Veteran head coach Dutton Wall hopes that experience will benefit his Sacred Heart Trojans in 2010. “Last year we had only seven seniors and this allowed us to play a lot of underclassmen that were not ready,” he explained. “This year we should be a little deeper as we have 16 seniors ready to fill the roster.” On offense, Wall returns six of 2009’s starters, including four offensive linemen. “The offensive line has some talented and smart kids,” said Wall. “This should be our strength while the backs will be by committee.” Senior tackles Michael Santoro (5’10”, 183 lbs.) and Chris Sylvester (6’2”, 192 lbs.) will led the offensive line. Senior Silas Fontenot (5’9”, 229 lbs.) and junior Michael Vidrine (5’11”, 239 lbs.) also return as starting guards from last season. Senior Joseph Tuminaro (5’9”, 156 lbs.) is the new starter at center. Senior Taylor Veillon (5’11”,

Bulldogs expect improved season

By John Burson Sports Writer IOTA – The Iota High Bulldogs struggled to a 4-6 record in 2009, but head coach Marcus LeJeune has to have a positive feeling about 2010 with the return of 12 starters from last year. That number includes the Bulldogs’ entire offensive backfield. Senior quarterback Gavin Guidry (6-0,160) is back to lead the unit. Sophomore Bryant Fantroy (5-10, 165) returns at tailback after leading the Bulldogs in rushing last year with 130 carries for 586 yards and seven touchdowns. Tigers have high hopes after 10-2 finish in 2009 By John Burson Sports Writer NATCHITOCHES St. Mary’s head coach Charlie Cryer heads into the 2010 football season with great expectations. His optimism is most justified since he returns all but three starters from a Tigers team that finished 10-2 in 2009. In his first season at the Tigers’ helm, Cryer posted a 4-1 district mark, good enough for second place in District 3-1A. The Tigers went on to post a 14-13 win over Basile High in the opening round of the playoffs before falling to Oak Grove in the second round. “We have a chance to be real good,” said Cryer, “especially with those returning starters back for a second year in my system. “The key for us will be to stay healthy and work hard.” The Tigers will return 10 defensive starters this season, including senior linebacker John William Methvin (5-11, 200). Methvin was the Tigers’ leading tackler in Cryer’s 4-2-5 defensive alignment in 2009. Also set to return is senior strong safety William Townsend (5-10, 160), who led the team with six interceptions in 2009. Joining Methvin at linebacker is senior Chris Cryer (6-4, 185). Cryer led the Tigers with four fumble recoveries last season. Junior Regan Kaufman (5-8, 220) returns to join Townsend at the other strong safety spot. The defensive line returns in-

tact from last season. Seniors Clifford Walker (6-0, 225.) and Trey Davis (5-10, 170) are the ends, with Brandon Kelly (5-10, 210) and Victor Bayonne (6-3, 265) at the tackles. Junior Garrett Ingram (5-7, 140) and senior Roger Bailes (56, 140) return at the cornerback slots. The lone new starter on defense is senior Will Strahan (57, 140) at the free safety position. On offense, nine of last year’s starters are set to return. Leading the way is senior quarterback William Breland (5-7, 145). Breland completed 55 passes for 855 yards with 10 touchdowns and only two interceptions. Breland will be joined in the backfield by junior Derion Porchia (5-10, 175). Porchia rushed 167 times for 1,351 yards and 30 touchdowns in 2009. Sophomore fullback Mark Gallion (5-10, 200) returns to lead the blocking for Porchia. In Cryer’s multiple offensive set, senior Logan Kyzar (5-9, 140.) returns at split end, while

junior Steele Merritt (6-2, 185) is back at wide receiver. Sophomore Sloan Dieter (6-1, 190) is a new starter at tight end. Four of the five interior offensive linemen return as 2009 starters. Junior Austin Hoare (5-9, 190 lbs.) is the center, flanked by junior guards Cody Platt (5-10, 230) and Justin Freddie (5-9, 200). St. Mary’s opens the season at home against Lakeview before three straight road trips to Grambling, Cedar Creek and St. Edmunds (Sept. 24). Athletes Not Alone in Susceptibility to Heat Stroke (MS) Kids enjoy summer with a break from school, adults often take time off from work, and the weather encourages everyone to get outside and soak up the sun. But the same enjoyable weather can be dangerous if precautions aren’t taken. Time outdoors can be delightful but it can also prove deadly. One of the more overlooked health risks each summer is heat stroke, particularly among athletes. University of North Carolina professor Frederick O. Mueller, in his Annual Survey of Football Injuries, cites 33 heat strokerelated deaths between 1995 and 2008. Most notable among those was the late Korey Stringer, an American football player who died from complications of heat stroke in 2001 during training camp with the Minnesota Vikings. Stringer’s death helped shed light on heat stroke, though it might have also given the false impression that heat stroke can only be suffered by those physically exerting themselves in summer heat. But anyone can fall victim to heat stroke, highlighting the importance of understanding heat stroke before it is too late. What Is Heat Stroke? A form of hyperthermia, heat stroke occurs when body temperature is abnormally elevated and is accompanied by physical and neurological symptoms. Heat stroke is a genuine medical emergency, one that requires prompt treatment to avoid fatal consequences.

Why Does Body Temperature Rise? Heat stroke can be confusing, especially for those who spend ample time outdoors when temperatures are hot. A person might be used to summer heat and all of a sudden suffer heat stroke. This leaves many questioning why body temperature rises during heat stroke. This is easily explained. Normally, the human body generates heat through metabolism and is often capable of dispersing this heat either through radiation of heat through the skin or through evaporation of sweat. However, during periods of extreme heat or when a person is vigorously exerting themselves under the sun, the body might experience difficulty dispersing the heat it generates. This results in rising body temperature. Another reason body temperature might rise is dehydration. When dehydrated, the body might not be able to sweat fast enough to disperse heat, again resulting in elevated body temperature.

Though not all symptoms of heat stroke will necessarily appear, and different people may suffer different symptoms, the following are some of the common signs and symptoms of heat stroke: * absence of sweating, with red or flushed dry skin * high body temperature * difficulty breathing * rapid pulse * disorientation * hallucinations * feelings of confusion

How Should a Heat Stroke Victim Be Treated? If a medical professional is available, it’s always best to leave a heat stroke victim’s care to the professionals. However, heat stroke victims need immediate assistance to reduce the risk of organ damage. So if no professionals are around to help, the following approach can help reduce the risk of long-standing side effects and possibly even death. 1. Cool the victim. 2. Get the victim into the shade, remove the victim’s clothing and apply cool water to the skin. 3. Fan the victim to promote sweating and evaporation, and if available place ice packs under the armpits and in the groin. 4. Continually monitor body tem perature and cooling the victim until the body tempera ture drops to 101-102 F. For more information on heat stroke, consult a physician.

Who Is Most Susceptible to Heat Stroke? Thanks in large part to deaths of athletes that are heavily publicized, many people assume athletes are most susceptible to heat stroke. While athletes increase their risk of heat stroke whenever exercising in extreme heat, others are at risk for heat stroke as well. Among those also at risk for heat stroke are the elderly. This is often due to medications that

Hurricanes hoping to bounce back By John Burson Sports Writer

LEBEAU – Head coach John W. Johnson enters his second year as head coach of the North Central Hurricanes with the goal of turning around the football program. “So far, for the spring and summer, we are seeing a lack of commitment to football, and know that the old habit of showing up for August has been a bad habit that is a North Central reality,” commented Johnson. “Overall, this team will be on a mission to being commitment, a new mind-set, and respect to the sport of football at North Central High School.” The Hurricanes did win one game in 2009, but North Central finished with a 1-9 overall record and a district mark of 0-6. Coach Johnson does return 20 starters from last year’s team. On offense, the Hurricanes bring back senior quarterback Jamal Doucet (6-2, 205). Doucet passed for 778 yards, but had just 11 touchdowns to go along with 18 interceptions. Doucet rushed 60 times for 226 yards. Doucet will also punt and kick for the Hurricanes this year. Junior Jeremy Rose (5-10, 230) returns at running back for the Hurricanes. Rose rushed 106 times for 331 yards and added nine receptions for 84 yards. Junior Markell Chambers (5-8, 160) and Jermaine Comeaux (5-10, 165) should also see playing time in the backfield. Senior Kyrie Dixon (5-8, 160) will return at wide receiver. The Hornets finished second in 2009 behind Westminster Christian Academy and after making it to the first round of the playoffs, CHPC (6-5, 3-1) expects to be part of the battle for the district championship. “I am proud of the way our team fought through every game last year,” head coach Rob Funderburk said. “We return six on offense and defense but we have some key losses including our quarterback (David Lorio) and linebacker (Brett Thompson). First team All-District selection running back Forest Cazayoux returns after gaining 800 yards rushing with 15 touch-

WCA poised to defend District 5-1A title By John Burson Sports Writer OPELOUSAS - Looking at the numbers, the Westminster Christian Crusaders should be the odds-on favorite to repeat as the champions of District 5-1A. Head coach Tommy Badon returns 18 starters from his 2009 team which posted a perfect 4-0 record in district play and a 9-3 overall mark. The Crusaders defeated Delcambre in the first round of the state playoffs before losing to Grambling in the second round. On offense, junior Thomas Kemp (5-10, 165) returns as the quarterback. Kemp passed for 1,008 yards last season, completing 74 of 120 passes with seven touchdowns. Senior fullback James Martinez (5-10, 165) returns, with help this season from sophomore Wesley Bellard (5-10, 205). Four players return as starters along the offensive line, including three seniors. They are left tackle Dwight Chautin (6-2, 260), left guard Patrick Lanclos (5-10, 170), and right tackle Brandon Porche (6-3, 280). Junior center Jared Matis (5’-10, 170) returns as well. The new starter along the front line is sophomore Matt Standiford (5-10, 230.) at right guard.

There are ten starters returning from the 2009 team on defense, including leading tackler Wesley Bellard at free safety. Both cornerbacks return in senior James Juneau (5-9, 160) and sophomore Josh Devillier (5-9, 150). Senior Parker LaPoint (6-1, 180) and junior Kaleb Pope (511, 150) return as the starters at outside linebacker spots. The inside linebackers, both of whom started last season, are seniors Chandler George (5-10, 190) and Christian Stagg (6-0, 180). George tied for the team lead with three interceptions and added seven quarterback sacks in 2009. Defensive ends Cole Bentley (6-1, 190), a sophomore, and Nick Waguespack (6-2, 180), a junior, return to lead the front defensive wall. Bentley had 16 tackles behind the line last season. the interior line, with junior Luke Vidrine (5-10, 180) checking in as the new interior lineman for the Crusaders. LaPoint returns as the punter on special teams. Tim Redd will take over the kicking chores for the Crusaders in 2010. WCA opens the season at home against Vermilion Catholic before visiting rival Port Barre. A home game against crosstown rival Opelousas Catholic is followed by a road trip to Sacred Heart of Ville Platte. The Crusaders entertain Northlake Christian before opening district play at False River Academy on Oct. 8. WCA hosts Varnado in a non-district game before two straight road trips to Catholic of Pointe Coupee and North Central. The Crusaders close out the regular season at home against St. Edmund on Nov. 5.

Opelousas Catholic poised GO! for repeat performance By Tom Dodge tom.dodge@eunicetoday.com The Opelousas Catholic Vikings cruised to a District 6-2A title in 2009 and are in position for a repeat performance this season with 13 returning starters from the 8-win season. OC defeated Loreauville (3413) in the opening round of the playoffs before being pushed out by John Curtis (42-0). The entire offensive backfield returns, led by senior quarterback Nick Artall (5-10, 185) and joined by senior runningbacks Nick Gobert (5-10, 185), Jaylon Edwards (5-9. 170) and Hunter Fontenot (5-9, 180). Artall accounted for 880 yards passing and 200 yards rushing for the Vikings. Gobert gained 700 yards rushing and Edwards

added 600 yards on the ground. Dorian Durald (6-5, 230, Sr.) returns at wide receiver, while Scott Reed (6-0, 220, Sr.) will see action at tight end. Senior returner Tyler Bergeron (6-5, 320) will anchor the offensive line along with and Dillion Charri (6-1, 245, Sr.), Chris LeBlanc (5-10, 210), Brandon Dupre (5-9, 210, Jr.) and Ryan Hackett (5-11, 240, Jr.). The Viking defense is led by senior All-District defensive end Durald, who is joined on the front by DE Reed and defensive tackles Curtis Hollier (5-11, 215, Sr.) and Tyler Bergeron (65, 320, Sr.) Edwards and Gobert return at linebacker, while Fontenot and Kane Hebert (5-8, 175, Sr.) will also see action at linebacker.
