firefighters ~ a personal look

T. J. Spencer - IFD proud to serve It’s not an easy decision to choose a career path that is fraught with danger and heartache, but for the possibility of offering hope, certain brave men and women do. Every day, firefighters are faced with people losing their possessions, or worse, to the flames; however, the responders meet that possibility head-on every time they go out for a call. They do it all to minimize the loss and suffering and to protect the citizens in their area. When asked about what he values in his position as a fireman, T. J. Spen-

cer with the Independence Fire Department replied, “the great feeling I get after helping someone!” Mr. Spencer’s path as a firefighter started a couple generations back. Knowing that his grandfather John Polito, Sr. had served as fire chief in the past, T. J. Spencer saw the road to becoming a fireman from a young age. Although he originally planned to be a military firefighter, Spencer is attached to the Independence community and is very glad to be serving with IFD.

Sandee Mulkey ~voluntary service~

Even though many fire departments have crews and shifts on duty at all times, it takes a lot of hands to respond to emergencies. That’s why fire chiefs and professional firefighters will gladly speak their appreciation for the volunteers who assist them at the firehouse and on calls. On the other hand, volunteers see a working environment that is very demanding, but some may be willing

to step up further. Sandee Mulkey, a volunteer with the Independence Fire Department, is just such a person. Having just graduated from an EMT basic class, Mulkey has intentions to go through the academy some day in the future and become a member of the firefighting force. Until then, she is glad to come out to the IFD firehouse and work with the crews there as often as she can.

The Firefighter’s Prayer When I am called to duty, God, whenever flames may rage; Give me strength to save some life, whatever be its age. Help me embrace a little child before it is too late Or save an older person from the horror of that fate. Enable me to be alert and hear the weakest shout, And quickly and efficiently to put the fire out. I want to fill my calling and to give the best in me, To guard my every neighbor and protect his property. And if, according to my fate, I am to lose my life; Please bless with your protecting hand my children and my wife. TPFD #1 A-SHIFT DISTRICT CHIEF George Coxen.

Saving Lives . . . Protecting Property

Wednesday, October 13, 2010

What Is A Firefighter? He is the guy next door – a man’s man, with the memory of a little boy. He has never gotten over the excitement of engines and sirens and danger. He is a guy like you and me with wants and worries and unfilled dreams. Yet he stands taller than most of us. He is a firefighter. He puts it all on the line when the bell rings. A firefighter is, at once, the most fortunate and the least fortunate of men. He is a man who saves lives because he has seen too much death. He is a gentle man because he has seen the awesome power of violence out of control. He is responsive to a child’s laughter because his arms have held too many small bodies that will never laugh again. He is a man who appreciates the simple pleasures of life – a warm bed for bone and muscle, compelled beyond feeling – the camaraderie of brave men – the divine peace and selfless service of a job well done in the name of all men. When he marches, it is to honor a fallen comrade. He doesn’t preach the brotherhood of man. He lives it. Author Unknown
