Welcome to Harvest Moon Fest 2010! Organizers of the 11th annual Harvest Moon Festival are promising the biggest and best celebration to date. The festival in Downtown Franklin this Saturday is sponsored by the Franklin Merchants Association in an effort to encourage downtown shopping and support for local merchants. It also celebrates the beginning of the harvest season and recognizes the spirit of a sugar cane farming culture that reaps the rewards of productive farmland and abundant natural resources. The Chamber of Commerce will kick off the festival with a Business After Hours Friday in the garage of the Blevins Building on Main at Willow Street. The Chamber and the Festival Committee invite everyone to come out and taste the collection of foods that will be offered that night along with door prizes and a great time of mixing and mingling with other business associates. Price of admission is a new, unwrapped toy for the Toys for Tots campaign. The Business After Hours is 6-8 p.m. and will immediately be followed by the festival’s “Boogie on the Bayou” also in the Blevins Building where “Still Kickin” band will perform until 10 p.m. Saturday’s events begin at 8 a.m. with Teche Action Clinic’s Adeline Guienze Breast Cancer Memorial Fund 5K Run/Walk beginning on the Courthouse Square. At 7:30 a.m., recording artist “Cupid” will warm everyone up with a pre-race stretch to the “The Cupid Shuffle” and his new hit, “Teach Me How To Wobble.” For more information contact Alfreida at 985-397-1096. Beginning at 9 a.m. there will be concession booths with local food, arts and crafts and activity booths throughout the downtown area. Activities for the kids will include fun jumps. Beanbag toss, pick-a-duck, rickshaws, face painting, ring toss, train rides, Airborne Adventure and lots of other fun stuff. One side of Main Street will be lined with car and motorcycle exhibits dis-

playing antique, hot rod, classic and customized cars and bikes from all over the state. Events during the show include three $100 prize drawings and a 50/50 raffle. Dash plaques will be awarded to the first 25 entries and awards will be presented to the top 10 vehicles. Awards will include Best of Show, Longest Distance and Club Participation. Other events will include the Farmer ’s Market on Willow Street, the Harvest Moon Queen’s Pageant, a 4-H Cookery Contest, a Chili Cookoff and all day long, live musical entertainment. The pageant is slated to begin at 10 a.m. at the Teche Theatre for the Performing Arts and will end with the crowning of the new festival royalty. St. Mary 4-H members in grades four-12 can register for the cookery contest at the 4-H office in the courthouse at 9:30 a.m. Prizes will be awarded on the bandstand at noon. The Chili Cookoff will be staged on Main Street between Jackson and Willow streets. The entry fee is $30. Teams will begin cooking at 7 a.m. and samples will be sold to the public beginning at 10 a.m. Winners will be announced at 2 p.m. For more information contact Belinda Darden at (337) 697-1789. The musical lineup includes Cross Roads, 9-11 a.m.; Jody & the Zydeco Hot Peppers, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.; The Hott Dawgs, 2-4 p.m.; Rickey Lorenzo & Mark Robicheaux, 4:30-6:30 p.m.; and Flashback, 7-9:30 p.m. Retail merchants will be open for extended hours with special sales and promotions to open the Christmas shopping season. Main Street between Jackson and Willow will be closed to vehicular traffic for the duration of the festival. Access to St. Mary Tire on Commercial Street and Scelfo’s Cleaners on Teche Drive will be available during their normal Saturday business hours. Police officers will be on site to assist access.

In 1981, Daniel Darden and his family opened D&R Rentals in a small, one-room building. Before they knew it, the inventory had grown so much they had to find a new location and they moved the business to the old Acme Building on Main Street in Franklin. In 1986, they moved again to another larger space at 701 Main St., where the furniture store is located today as Four Seasons and is operated as the oldest and largest furniture and appliance store in Franklin. The store has a wide range of name brand appliances and furniture such as Maytag, Ashley, Vaughn, Bassett, Standard, Huntington, Action Lane, Frigidaire, Crosley, Whirlpool and Magic Chef. There are two showrooms where you can find furnishings for any room in the house

A FEW FACTS: Danny’s Fried Chicken was founded by Mr. Howard Colgin, the first store opened in Morgan City located on Brashear Avenue. Mrs. Lola Mae Broussard and the late Mr. Norris Broussard purchased their first Danny’s franchise in 1972 in Ville Platte, Louisiana, by the end of 1973 they opened the Danny’s of Franklin (where Himel’s is located today).

In 1974 Norris and Lola Mae Broussard opened Danny’s of Bayou Vista; then in 1977 the Danny’s of Patterson was open where we served the Patterson Community for 30 years. In 1974 Norris and Lola Mae Broussard opened Danny’s of Bayou Vista; then in 1977 the Danny’s of Patterson was open where we served the Patterson Community for 30 years. Around 1978 Danny’s of Franklin moved to the present location on the corner of Adams and Main Street.
