Gwen and Jack Burson relaxing in their favorite room of their home.

Burson home reflects color and beauty The large corner home rest- ing on five lots across the street from Highland Elementary belongs to Jack and Gwen Burson. Built in 1976, the home fea- tues 4,000 living square foot- age with four bedrooms, four complete baths, a TV/enter- tainment room, formal dining room, living room with fire- place, library room, kitchen/ breakfast room, and laundry room. Jack Burson purchased the lots from the late Mrs. L.C. Amy and hired Herbert Lafleur of Pine Prairie to landscape the grounds. He contracted Hosea and James Johnson to build the home. “It was the last home

Hosea built,” said Burson. The grounds, landscaped with flowering beds, fruit trees, live oaks, a pecan tree, and a red maple tree, holly bushes, elm trees, crepe myr- tles, a sweet olive tree and palms also features a tennis court on the front west side of the home. “We don’t play any longer, but when the home was built my children played and enjoyed the sport,” said Burson. The Bursons’ favorite room, the TV room, features a small kitchen area, complete with a stove, sink and small refrig- erator. The couple enjoy sit- ting and relaxing in front of a modern flat-screen TV, watch-

ing their favorite programs. This room opens to French doors onto a back-court yard area and a backyard filled with flowering bedded plants and fruit trees. The Bursons laughed saying, “We have a small fruit orchard here.” Their fruit-bearing trees include lemon, kumquat, four types of orange trees, mus- cadines, blueberries, plums, peaches, persimmons, satsu- ma, figs, and pear. “At one time we picked 300 oranges off of one tree,” said Gwen. Also located in the backyard area, the Bursons tend to a vegetable garden, which pro-

Joyce Deshotel enjoys working in her flower beds.

Joyce Deshotel enjoys work- ing outside and is usually out -and-about working and weed- ing flower beds and tending to a vegetable garden. Deshotel, 77, who lives on West Park Avenue, finds that outside yard work is therapy for her. “It’s relaxing, ther- apeutic and a hobby that I enjoy,â€? she said. In an average week, depend- ing upon weather and how she feels, Deshotel works outside four to five days, maintaining flower beds. She weeds and waters when needed, her many flower beds. She also tends to a spring and fall vegetable garden. This spring she will harvest toma- toes, cucumbers, bell peppers and okra. In the fall she plants turnips, mustard greens, and carrots. Deshotel never dreamed that she would be living in town again. Married to (the late) John Deshotel for 40 years, the couple first lived in the last block on West Park when their two children were young- er. The couple then moved to a large country home on Tasso Loop Road for 35 years. After her husband passed away five

years ago Joyce moved back to town. “I could not take care of a big house and yard by myself. It was too hard.â€? she said. Many Eunice citizens remember Joyce Deshotel as the owner of Joyce’s Dress Shop, which was located on South Third Street. Her hus- band was a 35-year educator for St. Landry Parish Schools. Deshotel is planning future gardening projects. “I plan to plant yellow cotton in May in one of my beds. I also want to try planting gladiolus.â€? Deshotel also has one son, John Deshotel and his wife Tammy who live in Lafayette.

School, and a guidance coun- selor at Eunice High School. The couple also had a cater- ing business, J & J Catering. Deshotel kept the dress shop and catering business for eight years. Now retired, with her daugh- ter Robin Parker and grand- children John and Patricia Hull living with her, Deshotel still enjoys life, especially her yard.

Did you know Arbor Day history? While some might not think of Nebraska as a land of trees, Arbor Day actually has its roots in the Cornhusker State. A day now dedicated to public tree planting, Arbor Day can be traced back to one of the Nebraska Territory’s pioneers. Upon moving into the ter- ritory in 1854, journalist J. Sterling Morton, a lover of nature, quickly planted trees around his home. Soon after becoming editor of the territo- ry’s first newspaper, Morton eventually used his paper as

a forum to spread his enthusi- asm for trees and agriculture in general. While Morton loved trees, his advocacy ex- tended to trees’ practical pur- poses as well. For example, planted trees in the new terri- tory were used as windbreaks to help keep soil in place, and also provided strong sources of shade throughout the sum- mer months. By 1872, just five years af- ter Nebraska became a state, Morton had proposed the idea of Arbor Day to the State Board of Agriculture. Nebras-

ka officially recognized Arbor Day two years later in1874. In 1885, Arbor Day became a legal holiday in Nebraska, and Morton’s birthday, April 22nd, was selected as the date for its permanent observance. Today, it is nationally ob- served most commonly on the last Friday in April, and is even observed across the globe, including in such coun- tries as Australia, China, Ice- land, and Spain.

How well does your garden grow?

Miller plans to pick blackberries this June.

Bert Miller tilling an area for snapbeans in his vegetable garden. Bert Miller’s garden grows pretty well, as he tends to it almost daily, weeding, tilling and watering. “I enjoy garden- ing, and the fresh vegetables of course,â€? he said. Miller actually grows two sepa- rate vegetable gardens. One; lo- cated on the east side of his West Park home, produces cucumbers, tomatoes, bell peppers, and snap beans. Another garden located in his backyard will produce corn, okra, parsley and green onion tops. Alongside a fenced-in area Miller grows blackberries. “The variety is a Brazos which comes

from Texas and grows to a quar- ter-sized berry. A small berry plant was given to me by the late Anabelle Bertrand. We have made many blackberry cobblers and pies,â€? said Miller. Miller enjoys other fruits “of his laborâ€? grown in his yard, a satsuma tree, a Louisiana sweet orange tree, a fig tree and a plum tree. “One season we picked 1,100 oranges. We gave away oranges. Our grandchildren enjoy picking corn, and eating corn-on-the-cob. My plum tree produces many plums. We have made plum pre- serves and jam.â€?

The Johnsons lived on the east end of Eunice for over 40 years before retirement took them to west end of the city. Matthew (Matt) and Lorita Johnson moved into their new home a little over a year ago. The couple’s new home, lo- cated at 1341 B&B Avenue, features 1,300 living square feet, three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a combined open-area kitchen and dining room. The front door opens into a foyer and the living area fea- tures a 12-foot tray ceiling and a large French-designed front window. The kitchen features gran- ite counter tops, a gas stain- less steel stove, a roll-out cab- inet for spices, and stone wall accents. The master bedroom is ac- cented with a walk-in closet and a private bathroom with a large vanity and private shower. The hallway features a closet which opens into a laundry room. The Johnsons hired South- ern American Builders to build their home. To compli- ment their home, the cou- ple’s son, Matthew Johnson, Jr. of Lafayette, landscaped the front and back yard ar- eas with flowering beds. “He wanted to do the planting.
