SABS - filling the needs of their patients with a professional team Southwest Ambulatory Behavioral Services, better known as SABS, is a private community mental health center located in Crowley that offers different levels of mental heath care to suit the needs of individual patients. The team at SABS feels it is important to keep the Legislature informed on mental health issues and strive to keep mental health care costs down for patients all over the country. When a person is diagnosed with a mental illness there is often a social stigma that goes along with the diagnosis. Mental illnesses are physical brain disorders which inhibit a person’s ability to think, feel, or relate to society in one way or another. Although mental illnesses are more common than cancer or heart disease, people are more likely to seek treatment and talk openly about their heart attack than they are about their depressed feelings. Through education that stigma can be reduced. “There are times in our lives when we feel depressed. The problem becomes

greater when a person does not accept the depression as being in existence, or are too embarrassed to search for help,” said Amanda Dupre, Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Dupre is the Community Educator for SABS. Fortunately depression is the most treatable of the mental illnesses. This illness can last a short period of time especially by obtaining help and obtaining the right coping skills. Or it can last a lifetime. Depression is serious but treatable condition that should not be taken lightly. While changes and challenges are a part of everyday life, there are times you may feel blue, sad or alone for no apparent reason. SABS is dedicated to providing supportive mental health care in a non threatening, confidential environment. Their goal is to help patients to develop the skills to cope with symptoms such as anxiety. Other common symptoms include hopelessness, loss of interest, grief, mood swings, loss of energy and lack of concentration. Additionally, even some hallucinations and delusions may occur.

SABS is staffed with a professional multidisciplinary team that is ready to meet each patient’s needs as they offer a variety of outpatient services with two licensed psychiatrists and several licensed clinical social workers. Complimentary mental health screenings and in-services are available. Four million dollar project at American Legion Hospital

American Legion Hospital has announced a massive $4 million Healthcare Information System Project is moving forward according to plan. With health care undergoing signficant changes, the hospital’s Board of Directors initiated this massive project to fully automate every patient visit and to comply with recent governmental regulations pertaining to Healthcare Information Systems. The new system includes a complete suite of integrated applications that addresses patient safety, electronic clinical reporting, medication administration, regulatory compliance, fast-track to an electronic health record and patient-friendly billing. A new complete wireless system has

been added throughout the hospital to facilitate mobile access to the hospital system from anywhere within the hospital by physicians and hospital personnel. The system compliments the hospital’s continued mission to provide the highest quality health care. The Hospital Lab diagnostic equipment was recently upgraded. In addition the hospital has installed the very latest in diagnostic equipment, such as a new highspeed CAT scan. Also recently installed is the new Digital Mammography unit. This system provides physicians with clear and precise all-digital images, rather than images on X-ray film. The digital image is ready to read within 10 seconds. There is no longer a wait for films to be developed to be sure images are readable. Digital

mammograms take as little as half the time as film. This new digital technology will provide both accuracy and increased ease of use for the hospital’s patients. Providing outstanding diagnostic equipment for patients is a vital step to good preventative health, and is one that American Legion Hospital takes very seriously. All diagnostic equipment, including radiology and laboratory, is integrated into the system to provide ready access to information pertaining to your care. Every patient room is equipped with a computer workstation to document your medical condition. Additionally, the emergency room has installed workstations in every bay. Physicians will now view your medical

records electronically. The new system allows your physician access to your real time inpatient or outpatient medical record, and can actually view your X-ray films, or other diagnostic tests from literally anywhere. Terry W. Osborne, CEO of American Legion Hospital, in expressing the administration’s gratitude to dedicated employees, said, “This project could not have happened if it were not for approximately 50 hospital employees from all departments that embarked on a year-long journey ‘To Build A System.’ “American Legion Hospital takes pride in the outstanding Healthcare Information System Project Team. The Autism Society of Acadiana is a non-profit organization that has one mission: to improve the lives of all affected by autism. The regional chapter of the nationwide Autism Society is located at 3108 West Pinhook Road in Lafayette. It is managed by a board of directors comprised of 19 individuals, which is led by Donna Andrus, board president, and Vickie Nettles, administrative assistant. Autism is a complex neurological and developmental disorder affecting communication, language and social behavior that appears in the first three years of life. It is called a spectrum disorder because there are varying degrees as to how an individual may be affected, from severe to “mild” or high functioning. Autism is now the fastest growing disability in the United States. According to an estimated provided by the Centers for Disease Control, one in every 110 U.S. children will receive a diagnosis of autism. Also, the Louisiana Department reports a 400 percent increase in students with autism since 1995. The Acadiana chapter began as a small gathering of parents and professionals in 1985 intent on providing support, education and resources to local families raising a child with autism. The local chapter has

since grown to an organization comprised of 350 family memberships from the seven parishes of Acadiana. Their commitment to the autism community focuses on support, awareness, education and recreation. They continue to serve individual families as the autism community continues to expand. To expand on their mission, The Autism Society of Acadiana says they strive to “support families of individuals with autism and to raise awareness about all aspects of living with, educating and caring for a person on the autism spectrum.” The Autism Society of Acadiana also says they are “growing large while staying small.” They do this by financially supporting several programs designed to support the individuals with autism as well. Those programs are: Mentor program at UL - assists students with an autism spectrum disorder on UL’s campus helping them adjust to college life. Minigrant program - provides funding to educators for creative and innovative tools and programs tailored to support students with autism. Recreation stipends - provides funding to families of a child or adult with autism to help defray the cost of recreation or leisure activities. Education stipends - provides funding

for Acadiana chapter members to attend national conference educational programs and network with families from across the nation. InclusionMatters Statewide Conference - cosponsored two-day state seminar with Families Helping Families of Jefferson Parish, held at the Cajundome Convention Center in Lafayette. Support groups - provides educational literature, administrative and office support to the groups meeting in the various parishes. Within the Acadiana area there are nine support groups. Acadia Parish has one led by Dodie Prejean, and Avoyelles, Iberia, Lafayette, St. Landry and Vermilion parishes do as well. There are also three specialized support groups, parents and caregivers of adults with autism, just dads and autism and aspergers play date group. Annual meeting of membership and fun day - a family-style picnic atmosphere with activities geared for the chapter’s younger members. The annual membership meeting provides an opportunity to discuss programs and services of Autism Society of Acadiana. Recreational events - the chapter offers a variety of free activities to its members throughout the year including swimming, bowling and family fun days. Family friendly films - a pilot program

enabling families to enjoy a movie experience with their family member with autism. Workshops, conferences, seminars on autism - offer a variety of educational and informational presentations to its members and the general public. Families Helping Families treats at the Village Halloween event - an event which offers a safe environment for trick-ortreating to individuals with disabilities of all ages. Quarterly newsletters - mailing to over 1200 per quarter to membership and Acadiana schools. Each year the Autism Society of Acadiana hosts fundraisers that also provide family-friendly events to raise awareness about autism. The proceeds from these events stay in Acadiana and are used to fund the programs listed above as well as other programs. Keep kids safe from common household poisons Each year, approximately 2.4 million people -- more than half under age 6 -- swallow or have contact with a poisonous substance, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. The most dangerous potential poisons are medicines, cleaning products, antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, pesticides, furniture polish, gasoline, kerosene and lamp oil. Most child poisonings occur when parents or caregivers are home but not paying attention, so it’s important never to leave poisonous substances within reach of children, even for a minute. The hospital, which has 28 employees opened in January 2006, serves mental health consumers in Crowley and neighboring communities. Diabetes rises sharply in U.S. to about 26 million Actual cases up, new blood sugar test could account for half of 9 percent jump ATLANTA — U.S. health officials have raised their estimate of how many Americans have diabetes to nearly 26 million. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released the new estimate Wednesday. It means about 1 in 12 Americans have diabetes, a disease in which the body has trouble processing sugar.

The new figure marks a 9 percent increase from the 2008 estimate of 23.6 million. Health officials believe diabetes is becoming more common for two reasons — more people are developing obesityrelated Type 2 diabetes, and people who have it are living longer. But CDC officials say an additional blood sugar test that’s now used more widely may be responsible for as much as half of the increase.

Poll: Cold, flu season worse this year Attention sneezing, sniffling, coughing cold- and flu-sufferers: As miserable as you are, at least you’re not alone. So far, 2011 has been a bad year for colds and flu, worse than the past two years, at least according to a new survey from the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index. In January, 10.2 percent of Americans reported that they had a cold the day before the survey, up from 10 percent in December, according to Gallup. That’s higher than the 8.4 percent of people who reported colds last year, and the 9.2 percent who had colds in January 2009. At the same time, people reporting flu is on the rise, climbing to 3.1 percent in January, up from 2.4 percent last year and 2.9 percent in 2009, according to the poll, which asks 1,000 Americans each day whether they had a cold or flu the day before. The season has been particularly nasty in the Eastern U.S., where reported colds have jumped 3.1 percent and flu climbed

1.8 percent since November, the study said. That jibes with more formal accounts kept by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which reported that flu activity for the week ending Jan. 29 was elevated in seven of the country’s 10 surveillance regions and that widespread influenza was logged in 30 states. Nearly 33 percent of specimens taken from patients with respiratory illness and reported to the CDC labs tested positive for influenza. In Region 5, which includes Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin, nearly 58 percent of specimens tested positive for flu. About 25 percent of flu cases were caused by H1N1, the virus that spawned a pandemic last year. So far, 19 people from 13 states have died from flu-associated illness this flu season, including six children. As of November, about one-third of the U.S. population had been vaccinated against the flu from a supply of 160 million doses. CDC officials say they’ll check again at the end of the season.

Two steps forward in field of osteoporosis SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2011

Osteoporosis, a condition where the bones become weak, affects 10 million people in the U.S. Two studies released Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association looked at osteoporosis prevention and treatment. One found a nitroglycerin ointment may someday be an inexpensive, widely available means of prevention. The other found a small increase in the risk of atypical fractures associated with the long-term use of the class of drugs known as bisphosphonates. The nitroglycerin ointment, applied to one part of the skin, was shown to have effects all over the body. “It differs from current drugs, which either inhibit the breakdown of bone or stimulate the formation of new bone,” said Dr. Sundeep Khosla of the Mayo Clinic, who wrote an accompanying editorial. “Nitroglycerin tends to do a little bit of both, which would put it in a unique class by itself.” Researchers at the Women’s College Research Institute and University of Toronto, Canada, studied 243 women for two years.

They were postmenopausal and aged 50 or older. They applied either a placebo or the ointment once daily. At the end of the study, researchers found its use was associated with a modest rise in density and a decrease in bone loss. But Khosla says he wouldn’t recommend people rush out to buy nitroglycerin ointment, a current treatment for some heart conditions. “About a quarter of the people (in the study) developed significant headaches,” he said. “It offers a new direction for drug development,” he added. “Maybe the pharmaceutical industry will become interested in this and start developing other compounds that work like nitroglycerin does, but maybe doesn’t have the side effect of headache and so forth. Those are questions for the future.” The second study looked at long-term use of bisphosphonates, a class of drugs used commonly to treat osteoporosis. They’re sold under such brand names as Fosamax, Actonel, Boniva and Reclast.

The researchers looked at the records of all women in Ontario who were age 68 or older with a thigh bone fracture and compared them with women who didn’t have those fractures. They also studied the length of time that the women of these two groups had been on the oral bisphosphonate drugs. “We found a small increase in the risk of thigh bone fractures in women who took these drugs for five years or more,” said study author Laura Y. Park-Wyllie of St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, Ontario. “The risk-benefit for women who have osteoporosis and are at high-risk of fractures favors continuing treatment because, on average, the benefit will outweigh the risk.” For women taking the drugs less than five years, researchers did not see an increase. In October 2010, the Food and Drug Administration said it’s continuing its safety review on the drugs. The atypical fractures involved the femoral shaft (bone in the leg extending from the hip to the knee) or subtrochanteric (fractures in the bone just be-

low the hip joint.) Park-Wyllie said that a typical hip fracture normally seen with osteoporosis would occur in the upper part of the thigh bone, or femur, which is close to the hip joint. “Long-term use of the drugs may warrant reconsideration, especially for patients who are at relatively low risk of fracture,” she added. “So women taking these drugs, who are not considered to be at high risk for fracture [from osteoporosis], can talk to their doctors about whether they should continue or stop taking the drug.” Park-Wyllie noted that a doctor can assess risk by looking at a patient’s history of fracture, age, whether she is postmenopausal, family history, medical conditions and medications. The research noted that bisphosphonate use was effective in reducing the risk of typical osteoporosis fractures. “Why these thigh bone fractures could be occurring, there isn’t a good understanding of, or how they’re occurring,” Park-Wyllie said. “It’s an important question that future research should direct their efforts at.”
