LSON turns 10

More than a casual swim

By Conor Harrison Lone Star outdoor newS

In August of 2004, Lone Star Outdoor News printed its first issue. Now, 240 issues later over the span of only a decade, the issues are still coming, along with the online version, e-newsletters and a social media presence. “Our objective was to provide timely hunting and fishing journalism to Texans, something we recognized more than a decade ago as lacking,” said Founder David J. Sams. “That mission will always remain.” In the past 10 years, Lone Star Outdoor News has covered the most important stories in Texas’ hunting and fishing. The editors at Lone Star Outdoor News have always strived for balance — from having equal coverage of freshwater and saltwater fishing stories in each issue to covering both sides of emotional issues fairly and accurately. “It began a lot more hands-on for us, but it’s been fun the whole time,” said Executive Editor Craig Nyhus. “We drove all across the state delivering papers, and after writing stories or taking photos, we would be back in the office stuffing envelopes and licking stamps. We met and talked with so many people it really helped direct us in regards to what the readers wanted to know. We definitely couldn’t have done it without the support from our subscribers, advertisers and sponsors, and especially our readers in Texas and across the country.” The next decade will bring more news and more challenges to hunters, fishermen, state officials, legislators, fishing and hunting product manufacturers and retailers, and LSON will be right there bringing you the news.

Those looking at the major passes along Texas’ Gulf Coast may notice a slight disturbance on the surface of the water — a migration that covers dozens of miles and sparks the interest of onlookers and predatory game fish alike. The annual blue crab migration is a dynamic process that starts in the backwaters of the estuaries, and eventually See MIGRATION, Page 27 MIGRATING CRABS, BIG FISH: Blue crab are making their annual migration into the Gulf, and big redfish are staging at jetties and inlets to gorge on the feast. Nick Carroccio may want to consider buying a few lottery tickets in the near future — he seems to be a lucky man. Carroccio never thought he’d see the fish he hooked into, much less the shaky-head lure, late Saturday evening during a Century Bass Club tournament on Lake Palestine. Fate, it seems, gave him a second chance.

After years of dealing with rampant poaching, bureaucratic obstacles and corruption, Tanzania’s Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism Lazaro Nyalandu is taking big steps to revamp the country’s wildlife management — with hunting playing an important role. Nyalandu and several other Tanzanian officials were in Dallas

on August 7 after attending the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit in Washington, D.C., meeting with political leaders, Dallas Lazaro Nyalandu Safari Club and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department officials. “We want to transform the way See POACHING, Page 6
