THE LEUPOLD VX-6 RIFLESCOPE eupold has been developing cutting-edge optics since the 1940s, so it is no surprise that they have done it again with their top-of-the-line VX-6 riflescopes. Designed, machined and assembled at their state-of-theart facility in Beaverton, Oregon, the Leupold VX-6 represents the pinnacle of sporting optics. The VX-6 is available in five magnification ranges from the versatile 1-6x24 mm to the jaw-dropping power of the 7-42x56 mm. With a large selection of reticle choices, both illuminated and non-illuminated, there is bound to be the perfect VX-6 for you. Leupold didn’t pull any punches when designing this line of riflescopes. They began with a one-piece maintube crafted out of aircraft grade aluminum for unrivaled durability. Available in 30 mm and 34 mm diameters, they offer plenty of windage and elevation adjustment for the longest of shots. From there, lead-free, edge-blackened lenses with Xtended Twilight and DiamondCoat

two lens coatings optimize light transmission in low-light conditions, provide unparalleled scratch resistance and offer a crystal-clear image throughout the magnification range. The extreme fastfocus eyepiece makes reticle focus easy to achieve and maintain in the field. Available with 1/4 Minute of Angle or 1/8 MOA elevation and 1/4 MOA windage adjustments, depending on model, all VX-6 riflescopes are Custom Dial System capable and come with one free CDS dial, custom-engraved to your load’s ballistics through the Leupold Custom Shop. When used with a Leupold RX rangefinder equipped with TBR (True Ballistic Range), the CDS system takes the guesswork out of long-range shooting by having yardage engraved on the dial for fast, easy elevation adjustment. It truly is as easy as range, dial and shoot. Select models offer the all-new WindPlex reticle and the CDS-ZL (Zero Lock) elevation dial. The Wind-Plex reticle has hash marks spaced at 1 MOA intervals along the horizontal stadia which aid
in windage holds when it is blowing outside. While the CDS-ZL elevation dial allows the shooter to return to zero without over-rotating and when zeroed it locks into place preventing inadvertent dial rotation in the field. The illuminated VX-6 scopes feature Leupold’s exclusive FireDot illumination system. The one-button, low-profile design gives the shooter 12 illumination settings to choose from, plus Motion Sensor Technology (MST) that deactivates the illumination after five minutes of inactivity and instantly reactivates it as soon as movement is detected. Should the VX-6 be a longrange model, the side-focus dial is placed around the illumination control for fast and simple one-handed operation. The final step in completing the VX-6 riflescope is to purge it of its internal oxygen and replace it with Leupold’s exclusive Argon/Krypton gas blend. This gas blend is more resistant to thermal shock and
DALLAS SAFARI CLUB 2016 CONVENTION & SPORTING EXPO
diffusion than the traditionally used nitrogen gas, delivering 100-percent waterproof integrity. So the next time you are in the market for a “Top Shelf” riflescope, take a look through the Leupold VX-6. If you can’t get it done with a VX-6, there’s no point in trying.

RANCH MANAGERS AND BIOLOGISTS CHOOSE ANTLERMAX here is a reason so many Texas ranches use AntlerMax protein deer feeds. Whether the ranch is low- or high-fenced, AntlerMax is the top choice of ranch managers and wildlife biologists when it comes to supplementing native habitat and promoting overall herd health and antler growth in their deer herd. At the 3,000-acre Rutledge River Ranch south of Uvalde, they have seen the difference firsthand. “We switched to Purina AntlerMax the first year I was here,” said biologist and ranch manager Russell Furnace of when he began working at the ranch three years ago. “After the first year, the owners said they had the biggest 1-, 2-, 3and 4-year-olds they have ever had in the pasture.” The next season, the biggest deer ever killed at the ranch was taken, a 250plus giant. “They hadn’t broken 200 inches before that,” Furnace said. “The longer we’ve been on it, the deer are continuing to improve. Before I got here, the deer were not. Now, we can run hunts on the ranch.” Purina is the leader in deer nutrition and research. The difference between AntlerMax and other deer feeds on the market is their patented AntlerMax ByPass Protein and Mineral Technology. Developed in 1995 as an innovative first from Purina, the technology promotes antler growth by improving the protein quality ingested by the deer. AntlerMax underwent a major improvement last year and enhancements will continue as new research information becomes available. “Dietary protein from traditional deer pellets and from ingested plants in the habitat is typically broken down by bacteria in the deer’s rumen. The deer then digests the bacteria in its small intestine,” said Dr. Larry Varner, Purina’s wildlife nutritionist. “But the quality of the dietary protein can be degraded by these bacteria, potentially leaving less of the high-quality amino acids available for antler growth.” Purina’s AntlerMax By-Pass Proteins are protected from being broken down by these bacteria, as they bypass the bacteria in the rumen, so the high-quality amino acids are digested in the small intestine, which can support greater antler growth. Science aside, AntlerMax works — and the deer like it, said Ben Binnion, biologist/foreman at the Paloma Ranch. “The best part about it is the consistency of the feed pellet,” Binnion said. “The deer take to it really quick, even when they are first-time feeders.” Purina understands that different parts of the country have different nutritional strengths and weaknesses. That is one reason why some areas raise big deer and others do not. AntlerMax diets are regionally formulated based on extensive analysis of deer livers that highlight regional mineral deficiencies. Purina AntlerMax diets help meet the regional mineral deficiencies. The unique combination of AntlerMax By-Pass Protein Technology, Mineral Technology, Nutritional Enhancements and Regional Formulations results in a premium feed, designed specifically for deer. In addition, Purina’s AntlerMax feeds include proprietary levels and ratios of essential minerals, including chelated minerals, that help maximize every buck’s genetic potential for antler growth while supporting reproductive performance in does and helping to produce strong, healthy fawns. Furnace said better feed equals bigger bucks, both in the short- and longterm. “It’s pretty impressive,” he said. For more information on Purina’s AntlerMax feeds, you can visit www.AntlerMax.com. If you are interested in starting a supplemental feeding program on your property, feel free to reach out to your local Purina dealer or contact Scott Hohensee. He may be reached at sdhohensee@landolakes.com or (210) 288-2956.

TROUBLE-FREE LAKE MANAGEMENT rivate lakes are beautiful and fun, and the fishing can be stellar. However, they can also be frustrating. Lochow Ranch Pond & Lake Management, based in Bryan, Texas will remove the frustration, leaving only the enjoyment. Several years of drought followed by floods this spring and fall took a toll on private lakes, said John Jones, president at Lochow Ranch. “Some fish wash downstream, new plants and fish arrive from upstream, and new water arrives with a different chemical composition,” Jones said. “Murky water won’t clear up. It can be overwhelming to the landowner.” Lochow Ranch manages more than 6,000 lakes in Texas and surrounding states, and is busy addressing flooding problems for its customers. “We are doing a lot of fisheries remediation,” he said. “And lakes that needed treatment last winter with lime to improve the water quality need it again after the floods.” The good news is Texas lakes are full of water. “This year will be a boom year,” Jones said. “There is a lot of flooded vegeta-

tion — it will be important to harvest excess bass and get the water quality where it needs to be. It’s a good time to get a fresh look — some of these lakes haven’t been full in years.” Lochow Ranch has a monthly retainer program where their biologists will check your lakes and recommend how to address any issues, whether it involves management of fish populations, weed control, water treatment or aeration. “Be proactive, not reactive,” Jones said. “A lot of lakes are predator heavy and lacking forage. If left alone, it gets worse. And, if you add the wrong type of baitfish, like fathead minnows where there is no good spawning area for them, your money goes down the drain.” Your lake is like a pasture with a fence, Jones said. “The cows will eat all of the grass if there are too many cows,” he said. “The same thing works in a lake — people just can’t see it.” Thinking of building a new lake? Lochow Ranch will work with you to design and build it, taking your personal preferences into mind and creating your favorite spot on the ranch, including the
installation of a floating dock to your specifications. “We work with landowners to choose goals and timetables and stick with it,” Jones said. “It’s not instant gratification, especially when you’re trying to grow big bass.”

to a new standard. All external lenses are protected by LotuTec coating for easy cleaning and clear visibility in any weather situation. The V8 combines extreme zoom range and the brightest optics to make the ultimate all-purpose riflescope for all distances and situations. Whether it’s a western long-range spot and stalk hunt, sitting in a treestand, competing for a 3-gun championship or just shooting at the range, the ZEISS VICTORY V8 super-zoom riflescopes enable fast reaction time and flexibility — all designed to ensure the maximum shooting experience. The VICTORY V8 unites the latest technologies including the new ASV bullet drop compensator, considered the most intuitive and precise longrange shooting solution in the world. The 36 mm tube diameter provides a substantial benefit to those users who need extreme range of adjustment for long-range shooting. A fiber optical light system that is thinner than a human hair provides the finest illuminated dot in the world, resulting in 3-millimeter subtension coverage at 100 yards. The result is pure precision with the smallest targets at the greatest distance.
The multifunction illumination button on the ZEISS VICTORY V8 line is the most advanced illumination control system on the market. It can be quickly, silently and intuitively operated even with gloves on. Another stroke of genius from ZEISS: the integrated intelligent motion sensor. The illuminated dot is automatically deactivated as soon as you put the rifle down. It reactivates as soon as you take aim—a feature that saves time and energy. The illumination intensity can be continuously adjusted

DSC welcomes you and thousands of other visitors from around the world to Texas’ biggest showcase of hunting, sporting and outdoor lifestyles! This year, more than nine football fields worth of exhibits, opportunities for outfitted hunts and other outdoor adventures, gear, firearms, art, collectibles, entertainment, taxidermy displays, seminars, auctions and numerous other attractions are here for your enjoyment. But the best part is, while you’re having fun, you’re also supporting conservation, education and hunter advocacy efforts worldwide. In 2015, the DSC Convention drew nearly 50,000 people and generated $2.4 million for DSC grants to support wildlife habitat, research, law enforcement, youth education programs and legislative initiatives. With your help, we expect to break attendance and fundraising records again this year! The past year has seen DSC continuing to defend sportsmen and women from attacks by ill-informed groups seeking to bring an end to the protection of wildlife and habitat around the world. The protection and continued survival of wildlife and habitat can only exist through hunting and huntinggenerated revenue. Whether it’s proposed bans on lion and elephant hunting in Africa, airline refusals to ship trophies or standing up for hunters’ rights here at home, DSC’s efforts to conserve, educate and advocate can only happen with the continued support of the thousands of conservation-minded sportsmen and women like you.
Highlights for the DSC Convention’s four-day run include: ■■ Weatherby Foundation International will present its prestigious Weatherby Award in conjunction with this year’s DSC Convention. ■■ Presentations of the esteemed Conklin Award, Capstick Award and others. ■■ Exhibits from top conservation organizations and outfitter associations ■■ Friday/Saturday seminars by authorities in hunting, conservation, wildlife management and more. ■■ Displays of historic rifles owned by Ernest Hemingway, Elmer Keith, Phillip Percival and other luminaries. ■■ Unique taxidermy exhibits throughout the expo hall. ■■ A public-welcome, volunteer-driven, family-friendly atmosphere — all supporting a great cause. LAND OF THE FREE ROAMING GIANT STAGS rgentina could be referred to as a “hunting paradise,” whether it is big game you are after, or being able to shoot thousands of rounds a day for doves and ducks. Besides being an ideal place to go hunting, Argentina is also is a great tourism destination. Red deer were introduced into Argentina around the turn of the 19th century. The best and biggest population of free-ranging red deer can be found in Patagonia, mostly characterized by very open and big ranges. In this region, red deer can also be found inside very big enclosures, often exceeding 35,000 acres. In these fair-chase environments, trophies of superior quality can be shot. The stags can be spotted from a long distance, and rutting season is usually very long (more than 60 days), providing ample chances to harvest a very nice trophy. So, if you’re looking for a truly unique experience an unforgettable red stag hunting, Algar Safaris offers you an authentic and natural Patagonian hunt-

HAVE FUN FROM YOUR CONVENTION CHAIRS hen we joined DSC more than a decade ago, we never would have believed we would someday go on an African safari. But things change. Now, we have both been, David to South Africa and Namibia; and Craig to Namibia. We also didn’t anticipate becoming so involved with the club. But things change. After seeing all of the good work DSC does, becoming involved was necessary. Now, we are board members, last year’s convention co-chairs and this year, we volunteered to be chairs of the convention. Our objective is to make the 2016 CONSERVATION Dallas Safari Club Annual Convention the most exhibitorand attendee-friendly convention on the planet! We have been working hard for exhibitors. We have brought the popular Big Bull Lounge back, we have continued to work on traffic and move-in/move-out for a hopefully seamless arrival and departure. Don’t forget about the free barbecue in the parking lot. And, of course, the exhibitor breakfast and early morning coffee carts will be available again. For attendees, you will be able to buy an adult beverage and walk through the
W
show with it (except in Hall F where the guns are). The entire floor was rearranged to make this happen, and we’re sure you will enjoy it. We came up with a few fun competitions for you to enjoy. The Professional Hunter Cup, plus Antler Scoring and Buck Rattling competitions will take place at the Zeiss Victory Stage, sure to be both funny and fun for your entertainment. Not only have we worked hard on the convention, our business, Lone Star Outdoor News, has produced the Official DSC Show Program for the past 10 years. We’re lucky and proud to have DSC as a long-term business partner and happy to give back our time as convention chairs. We can’t wait for the convention to begin. Most importantly, HAVE FUN! — Craig Nyhus and David J. Sams, Convention Chairs

FOR THE FUTURE WITH LONE STAR OUTDOOR NEWS FOUNDATION unts and fishing trips continue with the Lone Star Outdoor News Foundation, as several shot their first white-tailed buck this fall. One hunter, Tyler Liang, is a first-year medical student who plans to be an orthopedic surgeon. After hunting his first deer at Rio Rojo Rancho, he made it clear he wants to buy a ranch someday. “I love this lifestyle,” Liang said. Three hunters had successful hunts this fall, thanks to the Outdoor Adventures program, with more hunters on the way after we finish the DSC convention. We want to thank all of you who attended our annual fundraiser at the Beretta Gallery in October; it raised more than $13,000! Other individual and corporate donations have gone well, including support from Cabela’s Outdoor Fund, Cinnamon Creek Wild Game Processing and Beretta. The original plan of the foundation was to arrange and take people who meet our mission, to provide hunting opportunities for those who have the passion to hunt but lack the opportunity, on hunts at various ranches across the state. In 2013, the plans changed when a lease opportunity came our way. After hosting more than 60 people for two seasons, others (with a lot more cash) took over the lease. We’re back to our original plan, and now realize we can better offer the full hunting experience at a ranch we lease or own. We continue to look for that opportunity, and welcome your help in locating a property to fulfill our motto, “Creating hunters for a lifetime.” Lone Star Outdoor News Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. To donate, contact Craig Nyhus at (214) 361-2276 or visit lsonews.com/lson-foundation.

PROPER PRESENTATION FUELS ANOTHER BANNER YEAR AT RIAC In the past 12 months, Rock Island Auction Company has handled 11 world-class collections, sold more than 24,000 collector firearms, and achieved more than $51 million dollars in sales, making us AGAIN the #1 firearms auction house in the world. It’s a position we have maintained for 12 consecutive years, and one we don’t take lightly. Our dedication to presentation, industry-leading marketing efforts and passion for firearms are all part of our recipe for success. We could list some of the incredible items we’ve sold in the last year, but how would we choose? Should we mention John F. Kennedy’s M1 Garand? The firstEVER factory-engraved Colt? Teddy Roosevelt’s saddle? The items of villains such as Heinrich Himmler or gunslinger John Wesley Hardin? Maybe instead we should speak of the firearms that crossed our door that once belonged to admirable men such as Roy Rogers, Samuel Colt, countless military men, kings, noblemen and other leaders of state. In less specific terms, we also could discuss the supremely rare guns, the century-old arms that look good as new, the prototypes, the historical, the presentation pieces, the steel canvases, the museum-worthy, the beloved, the unusual, the gilded, the engraved, and the jaw-dropping. If that list of what is offered at Rock Island Auction Company sounds like a museum to you, that’s because it IS, with one distinct advantage. You can own them. We’re proud not only to have been entrusted with such guns by their owners, but to have an important role in finding the next stewards to care for these timeless pieces. Like our belief in proper presentation, it is a role we hold in high regard. Finding the next steward, or the next generation of stewards, takes hard work, innovative efforts, and superb execution. Whether you buy or consign through Rock Island Auction Company, that is exactly what you’ll find. Please come by our booth and see the professionalism and pride we have for every single item in our care.

RIVER PLATE’S SINGLE OCCUPANCY MOBILE SAFARI CAMPS iver Plate Anglers, the pioneer of Brazil’s peacock bass fishing since 1992, will be offering singleoccupancy mobile floating camps featuring queen beds for groups of six anglers on our exclusive entry waters, as well as our famous double-occupancy mobile floating camps for eight or 12 guests. Our new camps will feature upscale cuisine prepared by our Argentine chef, including an upscale wine list. Fish with native Brazilian guides in 20foot, custom tunnel-hulled aluminum bass boats, where you only have to travel five or 10 minutes from your comfortable 250-square-foot floating cabin to begin fishing each day. Come to waters where 20–30 peacocks per day is the norm, on managed waters where the fishing pressure is limited to one group of six to 12 fishermen per week, fishing the waters only 45–60 days a season. Your floating safari camp will move several times during the week, allowing you to fish new water nearly every day. And bait casting or spinning rods and reels, as well as all lures and tackle are included in the trip price! Tired of fishing the main Rio Negro River channels with the myriad of 25-plus mother boats operating out of Barcelos, each handling eight-24 anglers, fishing virtually the same waters every day over the six-month fishing season? Come experience the truly “remote” Amazon peacock bass fishing adventure on the mid to upper reaches of the fish rich tributaries to the Rio Negro, Rio Branco and Rio Madeira river systems. You will see no other fishermen but your group for the entire week. Isn’t that the Amazon adventure you came to experience?

THE BEST RIFLE YOU’LL EVER OWN odd Ramirez builds only six rifles each year, each of the highest quality and one of a kind. Each rifle is built with the finest craftsmanship in the world, and the wood Ramirez uses on his rifles is exhibition to museum quality. Ramirez, a full-time gunmaker since 1980, began his education in gunsmithing at the Colorado School of Trades. He expanded his knowledge while working under an English gunsmith and spent 30 years perfecting his craft building the highest quality guns and rifles. He also worked for Beretta for nine years doing premium gunsmithing, stock-making and gun-fitting for the galleries. A one-man operation, Ramirez does all of his work in his shop, building on the Mauser action in calibers up to 458 Lott, and on the Winchester Model 70 action in calibers up to 505 Gibbs. The rifles reflect English or American Classic style, with clean lines and elegance. His specialty is his highly polished oil finish that makes his rifles truly unique and unmatched in beauty. Each rifle is fine tuned to meet customer’s specifications, desires and dimensions. The rifles are not only built for aesthetic beauty, fit and function,

but also shoot with an accuracy of 1/2” MOA or better. Craig Boddington has shot his Ramirez rifle on four continents. “My Todd Ramirez 7x57 is by far the nicest rifle I’ve ever owned — to my thinking it’s designed and built the way a fine bolt-action rifle should be,” Boddington said. “In the field it’s a joy to carry, and it handles like a dream. It has not yet failed me, and I’m sure it never will.” Whether you are building a rifle to hunt elk, plains games or specifically for dangerous game, you will be right on target. Todd Ramirez is one of the best Master Gunsmiths, with a thorough knowledge of the finest American and European rifles, shotguns and double rifles, and perfect for your gunsmithing needs, restoration, stock making, stock bending and specialty items such as leather wrap pads.

At the Zeiss Victory Stage on Thursday, be sure to make your way to the Zeiss Victory Stage (up the stairs in Hall F) for DSC’s inaugural Professional Hunter’s Cup. The competition, hosted by DSC’s Trailing the Hunter’s Moon star Larry Weishuhn, should provide plenty of laughs as 20 professional hunters from around the world perform on a timed skills course that involves routine PH activities — with a few twists. The competition skills are being kept under wraps until the competition begins — no practicing allowed. The shortest time, after penalties, wins! The PH Cup will take place on Thursday, January 7 at 2 p.m. Winners will be announced at the stage Sunday, January 10 at 12:30 p.m.

Namibia....the paradise of africa ...where with the infinite open spaces will fill your heart and your soul with perfumes and colors which you will never forget....
O
karumuti Game Lodge situated in the central plateau of Namibia, at 70 km from the capital Windhoek, and 50 km from the Hosea Kutako International Airport, extends over 13000 ha, and offers wide open views of woodland savannah, broken hills and rocky terrain. Feel the space and peace around you. Listen to the sounds of nature and watch the birds. Built in 1936, the main homestead in colonial style has a large dining room, with trophies hanging on the walls, a well-stocked bar, a spaces lounge and TV room, and a thatched lapa with a fireplace in the centre, adding to the scent and sounds of Africa at night. The heart shaped dam in front of the lodge is a striking feature. Guest accommodation is in chalets with ensuite bathrooms, private balconies or verandas. The swimming pool awaits you for much deserved relaxing refreshment at the end of a long day of hunting. Professional hunters, trackers and skinners, are on hand to assist. With more than 20 different game species spread across 13000 Hectares, as you stride through the veldt you will feel like an early explorer. After a long day in the bush, share your experiences over Italian and Namibian cuisine, complemented by excellent South African wines. LARUE TRANQUILO SOUND SUPPRESSOR M308
he LaRue TranQuilo was designed and engineered for the LaRue 7.62x51 family of rifles, but it’s right at-home on any precision .308 with a 5/8-24 threaded muzzle (1/2-28 threaded adapters also available). The TranQuilo is 100-percent CNC machined in Austin, Texas from stainless steels, reduces sound to hearing-safe levels and flash signature to almost zero. CNC machining of all components results in near zero pointof-impact shift when comparing on/ off repeatability. This is critical for the majority of users who remove and attach their suppressor between shooting sessions. The TranQuilo’s reduced blowback is what sets it apart. The design approach implemented what LaRue calls “SOT” (Safer Operator Technology). With mitigation of gas blowback in mind, LEPE (Lower Ejection Port Emissions) reduces dangerous materials and contaminants that typically encounter the user’s face. LEPE is an internal design that allows a percentage of pressure to bypass the main flow-path, resulting in extremely low gas blowback and soft recoil with the benefit of optimum noise and flash reduction. All components are manufactured from a combination of 17-4 PH Stainless Steel and Incoloy A-286. 17-4 PH (Precipitation Hardening) Stainless Steel is a robust chromiumnickel grade of stainless, hardened by a precipitation-hardening treatment. Incoloy A-286 is an age hardenable, Iron-Nickel-Chromium alloy designed for applications requiring high-strength and excellent corrosion resistance. All components are precisely en-
T
gineered to fit together solidly and perfectly. There are no welds to fail, or dimensionally migrate as heat builds up (shifting your bore centerline). There is no need to “fix” crooked bore centerlines with wire EDM. All parts are in perfect alignment when assembled. Accuracy is what LaRue is about, and we do it right the first time. To ensure the suppressor remains locked when attached, a captive locking-ring securely grips the suppressor to the adapter. Along the tube, knurled bands provide structural robustness as well as added grip for installation and removal. This profile also helps keep mirage covers from slipping forward during extended periods of use. On the endcap, an open, angled, four-prong flash-reducing tip reduces the small residual muzzle flash. The Muzzle-Brake Adapter is also precision-machined from 17-4 PH Stainless Steel. Even though the TranQuilo was designed as a .308 suppressor, it also works well on .223 rifles. Adapters are available in both 5/8-24 and 1/2-28 threads. The Adapter’s patented dual-shouldered design seats the suppressor in perfect alignment to the bore, and eliminates gas from escaping to the rear of the suppressor, keeping attachment threads clean and free of carbon. Weight: 23 ounces Length: 8 inches Diameter: 1.50-1.75”

PEACOCK BASS, FIVE-STAR AMENITIES AND THE 2016 OLYMPICS AT CAPT. PEACOCK apt. Peacock Yachts & Expeditions, the premier outfitter in Brazil’s Amazon, is sailing into uncharted territory come 2016 with a series of improvements, major events, and “firsts.” The first of these is the launch of the brand-new Rio Negro Queen. This 145-foot custom-built yacht is more a “floating hotel” than boat and has been more than a decade in the making. “For more than 12 years, Capt. Peacock has prided itself on providing the best Amazônia has to offer, be that by guiding anglers to the last IGFA All Tackle World Record peacock bass (28 pounds in 2010), providing guests with the only Bass Tracker boats on the Amazon, and by offering TFO fishing rods and Shimano Reels designed specifically for the Amazon,” said owner Leonardo Leao. “And, although our yacht certainly wasn’t lacking for ame-

nities or comfort, I knew there was room for improvement.” Thus, the new Rio Negro Queen. Measuring 145 by 32 foot wide, the new boat is 20 feet longer and 10 feet wider than the soon-to-be-retired yacht. Guest rooms are 200 square feet in size, feature floor-to-ceiling heat – and sun-resistant glass for an incredible panoramic view of the rain forest, a side-by-side full-size bed (can turn into a king size), private bath with walk-in hot-water shower and air conditioning. Featured throughout the remainder of the boat are an elevator, two handicap accessible rooms, a full-size dining room that resembles a country club restaurant, and an open lounge featuring a 180-degree view of the Amazon. As nice as this floating hotel is, Leao feels it necessary to remind people of what Capt. Peacock is all about. “We are a fishing outfit first and fore-
most,” he said. “Yes, we offer exclusive amenities and our boat features an executive chef, sommelier, a fantastic crew and fishing guides, but all of this serves to enhance the fishing experience. We are, and want to continue to be, known for putting clients on the biggest peacock bass in the world.” That’s not to say that fishing is the only thing Capt. Peacock can help clients experience. “We arrange side trips for most of our clients,” Leao said. “Whether it’s swimming with pink dolphins, eco-tours, visiting indigenous tribes or other activities, we are here to serve our clients and do so with pride. Texas pride, as we’re a Texas entity.” Leao is excited about the upcoming Olympic Games in June of 2016. “Last year, more than a million visitors descended on Brazil for the World Cup and none of them left without a
DALLAS SAFARI CLUB 2016 CONVENTION & SPORTING EXPO
new love and appreciation for all things Brazil,” he said. “The country was named one of the best host countries in all of FIFA’s history. I know the same will be said by the more than a million visitors to attend the Olympics in June. And we can help you get there, with the same care and comfort we put forth with our fishing trips.” Given the thought Leao and Capt. Peacock Yachts & Expeditions have put into the future, the company might not be sailing into uncharted territory after all. —By Gayne Young

AMMUNITION FROM A NATION OF HUNTERS
ince its founding in 1902, Norma ammunition from Sweden has striven to be the finest hunting and match ammunition available. Swedes are enthusiastic big-game hunters as well as target shooters, and almost all of Norma’s employees are one or both. Making the very finest ammunition is a personal thing. Norma’s African PH and American PH lines of hunting ammunition were designed from the ground up, by professional hunters, to provide the highest quality ammunition for big-game hunters who demand the ultimate in performance. Both PH lines use only the very best premium hunting bullets — some, such as the Woodleigh Weldcore and Woodleigh solids, from private specialty firms, and others, like the Oryx and the Kalahari, designed and developed by Norma itself. The American PH line covers most calibers used in hunting North American game, from the .223 Remington to the .340 Weatherby. The African PH line includes calibers from the .375 to the .505 Magnum. In 2015, the American PH line was recognized as a Gray’s Best, awarded annually by Gray’s Sporting Journal for hunting products that are the best in their class. In less than a decade, Norma’s PH big-game ammunition has established itself as the big-game ammunition, from moose and brown bears in Alaska, to elephant and Cape buffalo in Africa, and everything in-between. A list of dealers is available at Norma USA’s website.

BIG COUNTRY CELEBRITY HUNT lmost 30 years ago, Disability Resources, Incorporated (DRI) was established to provide much-needed services to individuals with intellectual disabilities. Since 1987, we have provided residential care, vocational training and recreational activities to these individuals on our beautiful 170-acre campus in Abilene, Texas. We are famous for our delicious, Downright Incredible products that our folks hand-make in our professional kitchen. Among those products are bread and butter jalapenos, steak rub, chow chow, jalapeno relish, barbeque sauce and traditional salsa. Our products are shipped all over the U.S. and may be purchased at www.driabilene. org. For the last 27 years, during the second weekend in February, the Big Country Celebrity Ultimate Hunt has been our major fundraiser. Raising more than $4 million, it has enabled us to continue to provide our first-class services for our folks at a reasonable cost to them. The hunt started out as the Big Country Celebrity Quail Hunt, but because of declining quail populations over the years, it has morphed into the Big Country Celebrity Ultimate Hunt and offers a variety of hunting and shooting activities during the weekend event. Hunter, celebrities and

volunteers enjoy our famous West Texas hospitality, fabulous food and new and renewed friendships. One of the most exciting additions to the hunt is our partnership with Chattaronga Safaris, who has so generously donated three spectacular African hunts to be given away as door prizes at the Friday night Shooters Soiree dinner and auction. Sponsorships are only $1000 and only 250 will be sold. The door prize tickets are selected in a “draw down” format, so the excitement mounts as each ticket is pulled from the hopper. You do not need to be present to win. If you should win, but choose to donate the hunt back to DRI, the proceeds will be used to set up a scholarship endowment in your name. Through Chattaronga’s generosity, we have been able to take our hunt to the next level and also ensure that we are able to provide our services to our precious folks for years to come. Sponsorships can be purchased now by calling (325) 677-6815.

THE PASSING OF A MULE DEER asing along a finger in far West Texas, a good mule deer buck jumped up and ran downhill for cover. We followed on foot and found him held up in the bottom of the draw with five doe. He must have caught a good smelling scent when he hit the bottom because his nose was high in the air, but he paid us no attention as we made our way to 150 yards. Mike Holley, an executive with Heckler & Koch, was on his sticks with his gun ready. We both studied the buck for a few minutes and Mike said he wanted to pass on him. “You shoot him,” he said. Believe me, I wanted to, but I was hosting this trip with Waylan Owens, owner of Owens Outdoor Sales, and he had his hunter nearby. “I think we should let Larry take him,” I responded. We both watched as a really nice old buck trotted off with his girls. “They are working their way to the top of that draw, I bet we can find him later — that would be a great first buck for Larry to take,” I said. We both agreed. About and hour later, we were driving past the spot and heard Owens and Larry Roberts on the next ridge in their Polaris. They didn’t see us even though we were only 300 yards away. I had been trying to signal them about the buck, since they were heading right toward him, and as they rounded the ridge top and disappeared from view, we both commented that we hoped the buck would be right there.
E

70
We heard the ATV stop and idle, then gun it, then go quiet. Holley and I were doing a play-by-play trying to figure out what was really going on over there. “They must see him — they must be on him,” the comments continued. Then a boom. “Oh my, they shot him,” I said. Holley couldn’t wait to get on top of that mountain, and we found an empty vehicle when we got there. “They are over here,” Holley yelled over the high winds. “It looks like they are looking for blood on that ridge, but that is a long way, more than 600 yards on my rangefinder.” We both watched through our binos as the pair reached the body of the fallen buck. There was excitement on both ridges as all of us were communicating now with hand signals. Roberts made a great shot on the buck at 505 yards. He had a stiff wind in his face as he sat with his shooting sticks. Owens ranged the buck and told Roberts to “put it on the third circle (on the Nikon BDC scope) and shoot.” Roberts listened well. This was the first mule deer for the Academy executive and he could not have been more proud, and humble. The buck was a 5x5 but had a total of 14 total points with 4 hidden near his bases. As Holley and I rode on, we both were more than pleased that the new mule deer hunter took such a nice buck for his first.

LET YOUR MOUNT LIVE TO TELL THE STORY & B Taxidermy has been in business since 1983 in Houston, Texas and provides taxidermy for North American and African mounts. We offer many options for mounting your trophies, no matter if it’s African to North American, global or exotic. Another aspect we have been involved with is designing and decorating trophy rooms in homes and businesses. Custom-designed dioramas for your trophy mounts can be accomplished above and beyond your expectations. We invite you to stop by our showroom at 11030 Jones Road West in Houston, Texas. We will be glad to show all the mounting options to meet your needs. B&B Taxidermy is always looking for new ways to mount your trophies and preserve that lifetime of memories. Mike Baird started hunting when he was 5 years old. He loved animals and everything about them. He took his first class of taxidermy with Kent Betts in 1979, in Ag Resource at Cy Creek High School. And that did it — he was hooked. Mike continued hanging around a local taxidermist shop and helping with anything that they would let him do. He just seemed to be a natural for taxidermy. He studied the animals in the wild and knew what they should look like when mounted. Then in 1983 Mike

started his own taxidermy business along with his good friend Leonard Bayer (the other B). B & B has grown since its humble beginnings and now has grown into a thriving business that has a father-son component. In 2011, Mike’s son, Frank Baird Jr. joined B&B full-time after working at the shop since he was a pre-teen. Mike now takes his clients and family overseas, hunts yearly, as well as doing lots of local deer and bird hunting. Mike still has that love for the animals, which shows in every mount that goes out the doors of B & B Taxidermy. Trophy Rooms by B&B Taxidermy can offer an exceptional look to your home or business. Mike Baird and staff excel at creating visually stunning taxidermy trophy rooms in the space you have available.

A QUAIL AND PHEASANT HUNTING ADVENTURE uail and pheasant hunters need not travel far to experience a memorable hunt, luxurious facilities and fabulous food. Wildcat Creek Quail Hunting Resort has birds at the ready — where a memorable quail or pheasant hunting adventure awaits. For wingshooters who favor the pheasant, full pheasant hunts are being offered this year. WCR, a family affair and the vision of Ron and Evonne Parker and their sons, sports a new lodge and an atmosphere that is truly family-oriented. “We want the experience to be firstclass but yet not stuffy,” said owner Ron Parker. Located in Red River County near Detroit, the property consists of 1,200plus acres of well-managed land that will take hunters back in time. The habitat, birds and dogs are first-rate, with fields cleared out of the thick woods by Parker, who also owns a construction business. “And we have cleared saplings in several areas to offer hunters a true Georgia-style quail hunt with tough shots through the trees,” Ron said. “Our customers love it.” Wingshooters may want to get their hunts booked, though, as the word is getting out about Wildcat Creek, where

10 weekends are already fully booked for the upcoming season. Several flight pens allow for flight training for the pen-raised birds, and the birds are released before the beginning of the season. “We want the birds to be as wild as possible and explode out of the grass,” Ron said. After the hunt, the new lodge and the food served at WCR may be even more memorable. WCR also has added competitionstyle sporting clay station for parties and corporate events.

PULSAR APEX THERMAL RIFLESCOPE SERIES ngineered with advanced zeroing capabilities and 10 preloaded reticles, the Pulsar Apex Thermal Riflescope Series offers stunning “white-hot” and “black-hot” thermal imaging for a long list of shooting applications. Ideal for nighttime predator hunting, the high thermal core resolution (384x288) and 50 hz frame rate contribute to a crisp, consistent image of faster-moving objects up to 1,400 yards away. Each model offers a continuous digital zoom for an extended range of magnification. The picture-in-picture digital zoom displays a magnified picture of the reticle’s aiming point at the top of the screen. This magnified picture of the reticle is ideal for precision aiming while the peripherals of the display maintain the base magnification for a wide field of view, for quick, consecutive follow-up shots. The Apex line offers one-shot zeroing with a freeze function. This menu option takes an image of the target to easily and quickly zero the crosshairs to the firearm’s point of impact. Its internal dampening system keeps the thermal core stable up to 1,000 G’s of recoil, equivalent to a .375 H&H bolt-action rifle. Each model includes updatable software, ensuring continuous improve-

THE LAST DEER BLIND YOU’LL EVER NEED fter three years of development, All Seasons Feeders introduced its new deer blinds, featuring the same high-quality designs and innovation used in its feeders, grills and other products. Now, All Seasons has added two more sizes with ample room for more hunters and observers. The orginals blinds were 5’x5’ with 60”x60” inside dimensions. The new Big Chignon is a whopping 7’x7’ with 78”x78” inside dimensions and a 5-foot or 8-foot stand is available. “I didn’t want to build what everyone else was building,” said Zach Gates of All Seasons. “I wanted it to be sure to last.” And they do. A YouTube video shows All Season’s employees’ dropping the blind from the top of their San Antonio warehouse, unscathed. Each of the blinds are coated inside and out with polyurea and are insulated with 2-inch foam. “The polyurea is like bedliner material,” Gates said. “The blind is completely coated.” The foam insulation used is a key component, and the built-in air vents assist in temperature control. “The insulation will help keep you warm in the winter and also keep you cooler in the summer,” Gates said. “We did a test against metal-insulated blinds
A
and the All Seasons blind was 15 degrees cooler than the competition in the middle of the day.” The blinds include padded shelving, exterior rain shields and carpeted flooring. Window options, made by Deer View, include (7) 24x12-inch windows for rifle hunters for a 320-degree view, or 20x14-inch windows for bow hunters. Windows are all grey glass tinted. The easy-to-set-up stands are all square tube construction and include handrail and diamond plate platform and steps. The new blinds are available for ranchers and hunters and may be purchased at your local ASF dealer. “This is the last blind you will ever have to buy,” Gates said.

RIFLES INC. BUILDS YOUR PERFECT HUNTING RIFLE aster rifle maker Lex Webernick of Rifles, Inc. has been exhibiting at the DSC convention since 1988, and he is frequently asked what is his favorite rifle. “It depends on the intended purpose,” Webernick said. “Everyone wants the Corvette that can haul a ton of hay.” Are the hunts planned for long-range antelope/mountain goat/Africa plains game/African dangerous game? “My Lightweight Strata model at 5 pounds is going to handle a wide range of hunts and be especially nice for mountain and strenuous hunts — but you could also go more specialized with a heavier Masters at 8 pounds especially for longrange flatland hunts. A dangerous game rifle is more than likely going to be based on a control-feed action and heavier caliber. Between these extremes is my Classic model at 6 1/2 pounds.” Webernick’s caliber choice is the .300 Win Mag. “I can go hunt about anything from Alaska to Africa with it,” he said. “I enjoy building calibers such as the 6.5/284 and .416 Rem Mag. — they are both great calibers — but not usually a hunter’s first rifle choice. The caliber is more about matching the tool to a specific job.” Optics is the other consideration. “I want to make sure to match the optics magnification and overall size of the scope to the rifle weight,” Webernick said. “I don’t use many compact scopes even when I’m building a 4 1/2-pound
M

rifle. I find for most rifles if I stay with a scope that is 15-18 ounces and magnification from 3-4 to 1416 — it’s a good match.” The gun maker prefers multipleline reticles that match up for the rifle, bullet and velocity. “I am finding hunters are shooting and practicing at longer ranges more and I’m comfortable with their choice of ballistic turrets. I have a page on my website that addresses the pros and cons of the different aiming systems,” he said. Shooting and get familiar with the rifle is paramount, Webernick said, and he makes it easy. “When I finish building a rifle, I send along a target sheet with it,” he said. “This sheet shows the target and lists the exact ammo, velocity and external ballistics — the trajectory out to 500 yards is computed. “My goal is to build you ‘your’ perfect hunting rifle.”

BUYING OR SELLING A RANCH THINK RANCH INVESTMENTS ince 1982, Ranch Investments has emerged as one of the leading ranch brokerage firms in the state of Texas. Historic sales of 1.4 million acres totaling nearly $1 billion in value have established our prominent place in the market. Initially based in Austin, the primary marketing efforts were focused in the six counties surrounding Austin and the South Texas Brush Country. During the past 10 years, brokers and agent representatives have been added in 12 locations, allowing us to better serve the entire state of Texas. Founder Kenneth O’Meara developed a concept that brought together a team of associates with varied backgrounds in farming, ranching and land ownership. Our associates have extensive knowledge in wildlife management and commercial hunting,
S
oil and gas production, row crop and irrigated farming, equine centers, cow, calf and feeder operations as well as real estate development. This enables us to best serve buyers and sellers with their transactions in the most efficient and professional manner. In 2008, John Ed Stepan took over the helm at Ranch Investments and manages the daily operations of the firm. Along with his expert staff, he coordinates print media and Internet marketing, works alongside his team of associates to assist them in any way and works directly with clients. As a Life Member of the Dallas Safari Club, John Ed has supported numerous wildlife conservation efforts over the years. His background is varied and unique including international hunting consultant, game ranch development, commercial hunting operations, rural land development, commercial
real estate and mineral production. Adhering to its roots, Ranch Investments is actively engaged in the marketing and acquisition of working farms and ranches. And since 2008, a new set of benefits has become available to our customers. With our network of accountants, attorneys, qualified intermediaries (for 1031 Exchanges) and real estate brokers, we have the team of professionals to assist you in the sale of your property and the reinvestment of the proceeds. Many times we encounter sellers who own property of significant value that has been in the family many years, resulting in a low-cost basis, and the tax implications can be significant. We work to develop a strategy such as utilizing the 1031 Exchange to reinvest the proceeds tax-deferred into income-producing properties. On the opposite end of the
spectrum is the first-time landowner, whether someone seeking a weekend getaway or a working land investment. We carefully listen to our clients’ objectives, develop a plan and locate the ideal property. After the purchase, we offer a full range of consulting services in ranch development for maximum enjoyment and utilization. Our expert team will assist you in taking an undeveloped piece of property and build lakes, roads, game fences, barns, houses, lodges and runways. Utilizing our network of wildlife biologists, we will develop a plan for the propagation of native and exotic game, migratory and upland game birds. For more than 33 years,
Ranch Investments has been trusted by families, foundations, corporations and trusts to represent them in their rural real estate transactions. Our reputation is based on honesty and integrity, so you may rest assured that Ranch Investments will always be by your side.

NIKON’S NEW RIFLESCOPES WITH BDC DISTANCE LOCK TECHNOLOGY ikon Sport Optics has released six new riflescopes with a BDC Distance Lock function located in the first focal plane, allowing the riflescope to maintain its scale and distance proportion on a target throughout the entire zoom range. The greatest benefit of these new BDC Distance Lock-equipped riflescopes will be for those who use Nikon’s Spot On Ballistic Program and BDC reticles to compensate for bullet drop at extended ranges. Up until now, all of Nikon’s riflescopes have been in the second focal plane, which means that as shooters zoom from the lowest magnification to the highest, the reticle appears the same size in your field-of-view but is changing size in relation to your target. For Spot On users, this has meant that the aiming points provided by the popular ballistic app have been specific to one magnification (typically the highest power). With the new BDC Distance Lock function that keeps everything in the first focal plane, the aiming points provided by the Spot On application will be the same, regardless of the magnification setting. This is made possible because with a first focal plane riflescope, the reticle stays the same size in relation to your target. Each of the riflescopes features Nikon’s Fully Multilayer Coated lenses that deliver superior light transmission for bright, clear images with balanced color. They are built with 1-inch main body tubes, generous eye relief and a quick-focus eyepiece for extremely easy adjustment. The elevation and windage adjustments Nikon’s new riflescopes are made in clickable increments of 1/4with the BDC Distance inch at 100 yards. Lock function include: The turrets all have a Spring-Loaded ■■ MONARCH 3 3-12x42, Instant Zero-Reset 3 4-16x42 and 3 feature that enables 4-16x50SF FFP Matte users to lift the turret BDC Distance Lock and return to the ■■ PROSTAFF 5 3.5-14x40, “zero” mark after 5 3.5-14x50 and 5 sighting in. This 4.5-18x40SF FFP Matte function not only simplifies adjustBDC Distance Lock ments in the field, it also makes it easier to relocate one’s zero, should the turrets get accidentally turned. These riflescopes also have a side-focus knob for parallax adjustment. The side-focus knob has distances inscribed on it, making it easy to quickly focus the scope from a particular vantage point. Like all Nikon riflescopes, the MONARCH 3 and PROSTAFF 5 BDC Distance Lock riflescopes are optimized for use with Spot On Ballistic Match Technology. The Spot On program provides users with exact aiming points on the BDC reticle for any load or ammunition at a specified range. Spot On is free online at NikonSportOptics.com/SpotOn and is now free for mobile devices, including the iPhone, iPad and Android platforms. The MONARCH 3 and PROSTAFF 5 riflescopes are waterproof, fogproof and shockproof for exceptional performance under diverse conditions. They are backed by Nikon’s Limited Lifetime Warranty and Nikon’s No-Fault Repair/Replacement Policy for Binoculars, Riflescopes and Fieldscopes.
