The 2025 Dallas Safari Club Convention & Sporting Expo might look a little different from the outside this year, but step inside the doors of the Georgia World Congress Center Jan. 9-12, and it will feel just like a familiar old hunting jacket on a frosty deer season morning. Many of you will again be making the annual pilgrimage to the DSC Convention, and we are glad you are here.
Many industry professionals have asked us, why Atlanta? Plans to demolish and rebuild a new convention center in Dallas prompted a search across Texas, and then nationwide for a new short-term home. The Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas will operate at a greatly reduced capacity over the next couple of years, leading up to full demolition. However, left with a choice of moving venues or dramatically reducing the footprint of the convention as we all know it, the search was quickly on for a new venue.
Moving one of the largest outdoor shows in the country was no easy task, but Atlanta and the Georgia World Congress Center quickly became an obvious choice. Atlanta and the GWCC impressed with their world-class facility, hotel selection within one mile
of the expo hall, an international airport less than 30 minutes away and their famous Southern hospitality, all to ensure the DSC Convention will continue to reflect the best in hunting, shooting and the great outdoors again this year.
DSC’s staff, board and the army of volunteers known as the DSC 100 are ready to welcome industry professionals and attendees from all points around the globe. The venue has changed, yet the genuine hospitality and DSC’s commitment to hosting an incredible convention for our exhibitor partners and attendees remain the same.
And what a venue it is!
The GWCC boasts almost 1 million square-feet of floor space jam-packed with nearly 900 of the world’s finest outfitters, firearms manufacturers, merchandisers, artists, jewelers and so many more. The 2025 Convention features a sold-out exhibit hall with a record number of exhibits, extraordinary auctions directly supporting the DSC mission, an incredible slate of keynote speakers and world-class entertainment to close out the Saturday night banquet.
Once again, DSC will host an Exhibitor Partner Casino Night Welcome Party to truly kick off the convention. Thursday evening’s banquet will feature Michael Waddell, host of "Bone Collector" airing on the Outdoor Channel, who has built a reputation for be-
ing a true American outdoorsman, with a deep connection to hunting, family and faith. Keeping with that theme, on Friday evening, renowned Marine Corps veteran Joey Jones, a national TV personality and tireless advocate for veterans’ issues, will recount his powerful story of resilience and overcoming adversity.
The Friday Ladies’ Luncheon will feature Julie McQueen, CarbonTV President and CEO. Julie will inspire women attending the Ladies’ Luncheon with her stories of a lifetime dedicated to preserving nature and empowering women in the outdoors. On Saturday night, following the close of the live auction, everyone in attendance will be treated to an intimate performance from award-winning country music artist Randy Houser.
We want to thank each of you for making the journey to Atlanta to meet up with so many old friends, make some new friends and explore options for your next adventure — all while supporting DSC’s commitment to ensuring the future of science-based wildlife management and our hunting heritage.
All this and so much more will ensure that the 2025 DSC Convention & Sporting Expo will continue to be the greatest gathering of conservation and hunting enthusiasts.
The migration is on. Welcome to Atlanta!

When you’re from a small town, and maybe even if you aren’t, you realize that someone willing to lend a hand is always just around the corner.
After three days of hunting prairie chickens near Pierre, South Dakota, David Sams and I hit the road on a Sunday morning, headed to my hometown of Harvey, North Dakota, for a few days of pheasant hunting.
Not long after leaving, I noticed my vision was off, and soon realized my right contact lens must have fallen to the floor when I tried to put it in. My right-eye vision isn’t awesome with the lens in, and it’s atrocious without it.
After missing a turn on a rural highway south of the two states’ border, Sams pointed out the obvious.
“You need to let me drive,” he said.
When we made the switch, I checked my bag for a backup lens, sure I had one. I realized I did not.
“This is a problem,” I said. “I won’t be able to hit anything.”
Several miles later, a thought came.
“I know the optometrist in town,” I said. “Maybe he can help.”
A text to my niece (while she was at church) asked for Dr. Steve Kourajian’s number. Her reply said, “I’ll get it, his assistant is sitting behind us. Call him, he lives for this kind of stuff.”
Now driving through central North Dakota, I texted the doc and explained my dilemma.
About an hour later came his reply.
“Come to the office, I’ll be there after church,” it said, and asked for my prescription. About 15 miles south of our destination, Sams spotted a moose and we stopped for some quick photos. Once we arrived in the 1,500-person town, not all that small by North Dakota standards, I looked up the prescription on my computer and forwarded a photo.
Fifteen minutes later, I was in Kourajian’s office, about a half-minute’s drive.
“I had some stuff to do here anyway,” the doc said.
“Sure you did,” I replied.
Ten minutes later, I was all set.
We talked golf and the rest of my hunting plans, going over a pheasant hunt planned for the next week.
“I’ll bet you remember your backup lens for that,” Kourajian said.
The afternoon was spent chasing roosters, although the thick, muddy cattails seemed to be their preferred hiding spot, with Sams and my sister-in-law sinking beyond the tops of their boots more than once. About a half-dozen roosters outsmarted all of us, but a few were bagged in the afternoon hunt.
After a walleye dinner and a good night’s sleep before the next hunting day, the “There’s something about being from a small town.”
The American plains bison survives in some tough conditions, from blazing heat to How do they do it? It’s all about the undercoat in the animals’ fur.
“Mother Nature has given them the perfect clothing to keep them comfortable yearround in all kinds of conditions,” said The Buffalo Wool Company owner Ron Miskin. “It’s because of the "down" or fine soft undercoat they grow out in winter and shed
Each huge bison only has 6-8 ounces of the undercoat.
“That’s all it takes to keep the bison completely comfortable,” Miskin said. “The downy fiber has a natural crimp to it that helps it trap more dead air than any other fiber. Dead air is a fantastic insulator and provides a great buffer against the cold.”
Most people have seen photos of bison completely crusted over with ice and snow, and their body heat doesn't escape through the amazing insulation.
But what about the Texas heat, especially for those with sweaty feet?
Bison undercoat is also an ideal material when it comes to keeping your feet cool, as the fine, itch-free fibers act better than wool, keeping your feet dry.
Ron Miskin and his wife, Theresa, developed socks, gloves and much more from the bison undercoat, along with the difficult task of locating enough to produce in larger quantities, a decade-long process.
“Our supply chain brings together bison ranchers, small independent mills and local manufacturers, Miskin said. “We work with ranchers all over the U.S. to get their hair. You only get a few pair of socks off of one bison.”
It only takes a few wears to realize these are the best socks and gloves made.
“Bison wool is soft enough to wrap a baby in, and tough enough to keep a mountain man warm in a blizzard,” Miskin said. “The fiber has a micron count of about 15, comparable to a good cashmere.”
Each pair is warm, lightweight and super-tough. Iditarod mushers who used to pack up to 25 pairs for the long journey, pack just five pair of Buffalo Wool socks.
“The socks wick stronger,” Miskin said. They keep you comfortable at real cold temps, and when it’s hot, they are better than cotton socks.”
The Miskin family has been raising bison for decades. The styles of products and byproducts of many ranchers raising bison for meat have a greater purpose.
“We believe that by working together, we can preserve America's national mammal,” Miskin said.
Longthorne, the British firearms innovators and manufacturers known for incorporating contemporary technology with the elegance of classic English shotgun design, will be introducing their Peregrine Elite range of shotguns at the 2025 DSC Convention.
Crafted with unparalleled precision from a solid billet of steel, these shotguns are engineered to deliver the perfect balance between power, agility and control.
The Peregrine Elite allows for effortless maneuverability and dynamic stability in the field or on the range, while its meticulously tuned responsiveness ensures rapid target acquisition and flawless performance with every shot.
Inspired by the speed and grace of the peregrine falcon, the Peregrine Elite range combines cutting-edge materials with ergonomic design to create a shotgun that feels like an extension of the shooter.
Whether you're navigating dense cover or tracking fast-moving game, the Peregrine Elite offers unmatched reliability and accuracy, setting a new standard in modern shotguns.
Designed for shooters seeking the perfect balance of power, precision and agility, the Peregrine Elite features extended 33-inch barrels as standard, but is available in other lengths. The longer barrel offers the same handling and responsiveness as a shorter-length barrel because the ‘mass’ has been moved toward the breech face.
These models also feature Longthorne’s RWR rib enabling faster and more accurate target acquisition.
In addition, Longthorne is delighted to bring its long-anticipated .410 barrels which can either be supplied as a stand-alone gun or retrofitted to their 12-, 16-, 20- or 28-gauge models.
If you would like to see these guns, visit Longthorne at the DSC convention (booth 4961) where the Longthorne team will be waiting to welcome you.

Night vision and thermal optics have long been at the forefront of weapon sight technology, particularly for predator and hog hunters. In recent years, features and image quality have steadily improved, while prices have become more competitive as new brands enter the market.
One of the most exciting newcomers is Nocpix Thermal Optics, a brand poised to drive the industry forward. Despite its rapid emergence, Nocpix (short for "nocturnal pixels") is backed by seasoned industry leaders and a top-tier thermal sensor fabricator, widely regarded as producing some of the best sensors in the consumer market.
Nocpix's initial lineup boasts impressive specifications and groundbreaking features. Among them is Lens-Integrated LRF technology, which sets it apart from competitors. While other brands rely on external rangefinder modules, Nocpix integrates a laser rangefinder directly into the objective lens. This innovative design ensures better alignment and more accurate ranging, all in a sleek, streamlined package.
Another standout feature is Ocular Zoom, a first for the thermal hunting market. Unlike traditional digital zoom, which can degrade image quality, Nocpix’s optical zooming eyepiece sits behind the high-resolution display, allowing users to smoothly zoom in without any digital loss. This feature can be used alone or combined with digital zoom for greater versatility.
With these innovations and surprisingly aggressive pricing, Nocpix has made a bold entrance into the thermal optics arena. If you’re in the market for a thermal optic, Nocpix deserves serious consideration.

Chapungu-Kambako again had the privilege to host Jay Presti and Crystal Gibson from the Pursuit Channel’s “Blue Collar Adventures” this past November.
Crystal took on the ultimate challenge — hunting Cape buffalo at Kambako camp in the Niassa Reserve, while Jay had his eye set on a crocodile in the mighty Lugenda River.
It was a tough and challenging end-of-season safari with high temperatures and long days. With early morning starts and late evenings, they had to push their bodies to the max. However, under excellent guidance from professional hunter Ryan Cliffe, Crystal managed to get an opportunity at her well-deserved daggaboy, something she has been dreaming about for a long time. Jay also hunted his crocodile, and said after the hunt:
“This wasn’t just a hunt; it was a battle of wits, patience and respect for a creature built by time itself.”
After a 7-day safari with additional species collected, including Lichtenstein hartebeest, common duiker, yellow baboon and Johnston’s impala, it was time to greet Mozambique and head to Nyara Private Game Reserve in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa.
Recently acquired, Nyara, the Swahili word for “trophy,” is a reserve which is brimming with top quality endemic and a few exotic species. This malaria-free property is ideal for bow and rifle safaris which Jay and Crystal both got to test.
Crystal, together with PH Werner Mulder, bagged a beautiful roan, zebra and common springbuck with her rifle; while Jay and PH Nicolai Raubenheimer hunted a magnificent golden wildebeest. They also took on another challenge — bow vs. buffalo — where Jay tested his skills in a management hunt for an old buffalo cow on foot.
It was a successful and satisfying conclusion to our 2024 safari season and a perfect tribute to friendship, sharing experiences in Africa. Jay and Crystal’s adventures are featured on the Pursuit Channel and “Blue Collar Adventure’s” YouTube channel.

Most hunters spend a lifetime waiting to see their first African sunrise. A fortunate few have experienced it countless times, yet never gain their fill. No matter how grand your expectations or which species tops the list, Jamy Traut Hunting Safaris is ready to host the safari of your dreams.
There is no finer safari destination than Namibia. The size of Texas and Oklahoma combined with a population density similar to Montana, Namibia is a land of stunning landscapes, unspoiled hunting concessions and a staggering selection of freeranging plains game and big game species. Game numbers as well as trophy quality are outstanding and a proper infrastructure ensures that hunting Namibia is convenient and safe.
A professional hunter with nearly 35 years of experience, Jamy Traut was born in Namibia and raised on a remote game-rich property near the Caprivi Strip. He grew up with a rifle over his shoulder and could never imagine becoming anything other than a professional hunter. Today, his namesake company remains a family-run operation with exclusive hunting rights on some of the most desirable private properties, national parks and conservancies in all of Africa.
Bordering the West side of Etosha National Park, Kaokoland is Africa’s largest contiguous hunting concession. Essentially a wilderness area with but few residents, Kaokoland is a place where lions, elephant, eland and other major plains game species dominate the landscape. Waterberg Plateau National Park is quite possibly the finest trophy Cape buffalo concession in all of Africa. Moreover, it
offers superb leopard and eland hunting in a pristine natural environment.
Jamy’s sprawling concession in the Kalahari Desert is the place for huge black-maned lions (currently importable to America), world-class gemsbok and outstanding trophy eland. Two concessions in the famed Caprivi Strip offer the opportunity for elephant, Cape buffalo, hippo, croc, lechwe and several other plains game species, as well as sport fishing.
Quite often, safaris begin or conclude with a few days at Panorama, Jamy’s private plains game haven that encompasses 55,000 acres with exclusive rights to another 250,000 adjoining acres. Jamy’s partner, Louw Lotter, and their families live on Panorama and have created a spectacular permanent lodge with chalets, luxury safari tents, swimming pool and a selection of activities and tours for nonhunters as well. A Panoramabased safari is a favorite of family groups and the possibilities for side trips throughout Namibia can easily be arranged.
All hunting areas feature permanent chalets or luxury tents with en suite baths, superb dining and an unexpected level of comfort. Each camp is supported by a full-time staff and professional hunters manage each location as well as leading the hunts.
Jamy Traut Hunting Safaris is uniquely positioned to make your African safari dreams come true. Please drop by booth 4273 at any time during the show and see for yourself!
Do you dream of hunting a big red stag? At the Reserve Ranch, you can achieve your dreams right here in Texas.
According to owner John Ed Stepan, mature red stags are a key focus at the ranch.
“I started breeding them with New Zealand genetics, and we have some outstanding trophies to offer,” Stepan said. “A large, multi-tined stag is a sight to behold.”
Through a strategic relationship and years of breeding from some of the top bloodlines in the world, Reserve Ranch offers world-class red deer hunting at the expansive ranch north of La Pryor, about an hour and a half from the San Antonio International Airport, where you’ll see stags ranging from 300 to 500-plus inches.
Stepan, a lifelong hunter who also operates Ranch Investments, began guiding exotic game hunts in the early 1980s in the Texas Hill Country, and purchased his first hunting ranch in 1993, building it from the ground up. In 2000, he purchased 3,300 acres in South Texas, and added another 3,800 acres two years later, all of which he managed for big game.
Fatherhood eventually took priority in Stepan’s life, leading him to sell the ranches to focus on his growing children.
However, a decade later when his children were off to college, the Reserve Ranch property became available once again. Stepan, with his avid hunting wife, Debra, purchased the ranch with the goal of turning it into the premier hunting ranch in Texas.
The Reserve Ranch encompasses 5 square miles of some of the best habitat in South Texas and is
bordered by 2 1/2 miles of one of the best stretches on the Nueces River.
In addition to white-tailed deer, more than 20 species of exotics are managed on the ranch, and dove and upland bird hunting is available, too.
“Our dedication is to the preservation of big game animals through the funds generated by hunting,” Stepan said. “This is a proven method of game management utilized by governments and private nature reserves around the world.”

The Stepans had a vision to create a destination in South Texas that embraces both the roots of the Spanish culture along with the dreams exemplified by so many Texans.
Styled after the Historic Mission at Goliad, the Hacienda, with its inviting colonnade, courtyards and fountains takes you to another place in time — Texas in the 1800s. Massive, ancient pecan trees draw you toward the lawn, flanked by the swimming pool and veranda before entering one of the 10 private guest rooms. Also, off the colonnade sits an expansive trophy room displaying more than 250 species from around the globe, a card room and 25-seat theater. The dining hall seats 30, and sports

South Africa’s guineafowl look like the noisy birds you see in rural farmyards, but the wild version is night-and-day different. Hunting them just might be the most fun and unforgettable experience you can have while holding a shotgun.
The guineas hang in huge flocks, up to 100 birds, and prefer to run — and run — rather than fly. Once airborne, they are fast, and their size and toughness require a solid hit to bring them down.
It’s the hunting method, though, that will excite any wingshooter. Described as a driven hunt, it’s not like the European driven hunt you may have experienced or seen. This is more exciting, much noisier and, when it works, culminates in complete mayhem.
Hunting in the Bloemfontein area, about 4 hours south of Johannesburg, with Bird Hunters Africa, our group of six hunters attempted several drives on several days in late July.
After a flock is spotted, a plan is made by the professional hunters to cover large, but hopefully not too wide, areas of cover. With many areas up to a mile long, the hunters are placed at one end, while the beaters, a large group of young locals carrying flags and wearing bright clothing, begin at
The hunters move slowly in a line, picking up a few francolin and possibly a guinea or two on the way. The drivers, though, are moving quickly, making noise with their flags and yelling Zulu phrases, some even singing songs, to keep the birds moving on the ground. When the drivers get closer to the hunters, the noises and chants seem like they are made for a movie. The hunters are told to keep moving, more quickly now, to help confuse and stop the birds.
The goal, of course, is to corral the birds in one general area. Once a few birds flush, the others tend to follow, bringing a special kind of chaos. A half-dozen guineas may buzz overhead while you’re scrambling to reload.
Not all drives achieve the ultimate goal, with the guineafowl finding a safe escape route. When it does, the chaos ends as quickly as it began, and the hunters, guides and beaters load into the Land
It’s time to head to another drive — and more fun.
“You haven’t been to South Africa if you have not visited Cape Town.”
That’s the motto of Cape Town Hunting Safaris & Tours, which for 40 years has continued to provide the finest touring experience while you are visiting Cape Town, at South Africa’s southern coast.
The tours are courtesy of Joe and Nicole da Silva, who are registered tour guides with the department of tourism in South Africa.
“We offer a 4-day special package for two at $3,600 (US), and this includes 4-star hotel accommodation at the waterfront, breakfast and sit-down lunch at one of our finest chosen restaurants we enjoy taking clients, all entrance to our national parks, wine tasting, cheese tasting and chocolate tasting,” Joe da Silva said.
The experience is described as second-to-none.
“This includes your own personal vehicle and no sharing with other clients,” da Silva said. “It also includes visiting Table Mountain, one of the seven Great Wonders of the World, our own Africa penguins, Cape of Good Hope National Park and wine tasting tours.”
The tours are the perfect beginning or conclusion to a hunting safari in other parts of Africa. To learn more, stop by Booth 2337 or visit the website below.
In 1949, Ernest Hemingway, one of America’s most celebrated authors and an avid hunter, purchased a Beretta SO3 shotgun, serial number 5991. This 12-gauge, double-trigger shotgun was Beretta’s premier over-and-under model. Hemingway used it for duck hunting in Venice, Italy, and later for hunting guinea fowl in Africa and pigeons in Cuba.
In 1963, the SO3 was sold at auction by Abercrombie & Fitch and later reacquired by Beretta in the late 1990s. Today, it is displayed at the Beretta Gallery on Madison Avenue in New York.
Beretta has reimagined this legendary shotgun, creating a modern version based on their current top-of-the-line model, the SO10. The new SO10 is a 20-gauge with a 28-inch barrel, adorned with updated engravings that include roses, little faces, and the historic Pietro Beretta logo.
Priced at $115,000, the SO10 pays homage to “Papa Hemingway.”
For more information or to inquire about additional SO10 models, please call the Beretta Gallery in Dallas’s Highland Park or visit berettagalleryusa.com.

Remember when a hunter was measured by how well he shot, and not how much he spent? When memories were measured in curly tails, not dollar bills? We do. And that is why we created the Spandau S2. A reliable, extremely well balanced waterfowl gun built around the Inertia operating system for unmatched performance at a price that shows that you still know the true measure of a hunter.
There’s a reason why you see Skeeter boats on nearly every lake across the country, and more recently in every bay along the coast. No other boat manufacturer boasts the quality from bow to stern, along with the rich history and heritage of Skeeter.
Skeeter’s goal, to build boats that are engineered like no other, permeates everything they do — from design and manufacturing methods to the courtesy extended each time you walk into a dealership. Skeeter’s no-corners-cut construction and pursuit of perfection is evident in the best-engineered bass boats on the water.
Skeeter was the name on the first US Coast Guard-approved bass boat. Other industry firsts include the first V-Hull pad design, the first Sponson hull concept and the first production bass boat and much more.
Skeeter offers a full line of bass boats from the 18’ and 19’ models in the ZX line, to the most popular ZXR Models and the top-of-the line FXR Apex and Limited Models, your bass boat needs will be met by Skeeter.
The Skeeter saltwater lineup of center console bay boats are easily the bestriding bay boats on the market. With models from 21’ to 24’6” you are covered for all your inshore and close-to-shore offshore fishing needs.
The Deep-V Line includes boats for fishing and play. While our WX and WXR lines are your work hard boats, designed for the roughest of waters and fishing conditions, the Solera models give you the flexibility to play a little more when the fishing day is done.
For more than 75 years, generations of anglers have trusted Skeeter for their best fishing memories. Built in Texas, the company’s production process uses advanced manufacturing techniques and materials, many of which were first used in aerospace applications. Skeeter’s X-Treme and EX-Cell composite construction ensure a smooth, dry and safe trip to your favorite fishing hole.
This year, for the 22nd consecutive time, Skeeter was recognized by the National Marine Manufacturer’s Association for “Excellence in Customer Satisfaction for Fiberglass Outboard Boats.”

One of the “must have” features of today’s ranch or farm properties is a private lake or pond. And with many smaller rural properties being purchased, the dream of catching a big bass from your own pond can still become a reality.
“More people from urban areas are buying properties, and smaller ponds are more popular, but people still want great fishing and big fish,” said John Jones, president of Shoreline Consulting. “We’ve spent a lot of time and effort addressing good fishing in smaller bodies of water.”
Jones said he expects the company’s biggest construction year in 2025.
“We’re building a lot of lakes,” he said. “And since the election, we can see it in the number of calls we’re getting.”
Shoreline Consulting provides comprehensive private lake and pond design, construction and renovation services across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. And good news for the landowners in Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia, they are now offering services farther east.
“There’s nothing quite like a lake to turn your rural retreat into something truly special,” Jones said. “Considering the swimming, boating and fishing possibilities, a private body of water will become the recreational hotspot that your family and friends will love for decades.”
Improved aesthetics and increased property values are just a few of the benefits of a new private lake or pond.
“Whether your dream is a trophy fishery, a beautiful pond for enhancing the view or a boating and swimming paradise, or the ability to move water to flood duck-hunting areas, we will turn your dream into reality,” he said.
With Shoreline’s lake design and construction experts, the work begins long before the first shovelful of dirt is moved, and the turnkey operation relieves property owners from having to find and manage excavation contractors.
The team starts by carefully assessing your goals for the lake and analyzing the property and its unique characteristics. Shoreline’s experts measure rainfall and the area’s watershed to determine ideal lake depth and proper slope, to plan the size and shape of the body of water. They evaluate building of dams, placing drains and liners, adding supplemental aeration and structural features, all to meet the customers’ desires.
engineers designing your house, buildings and other ranch structures to maximize sightlines and landscape aesthetics.
Once the planning is final, Shoreline brings the most up-to-date excavation and earth-moving equipment and a team of certified professionals to build the lake.
“We do what your local earth movers do, just better because there is a specific purpose and design in place,” Jones said. “You end up with a better finished product for the same cost.”
The Shoreline team also can renovate an existing lake that is not living up to its potential, addressing issues like leaks or water level problems, erosion, dam structural issues and other problems.
Shoreline helps landowners not only with lake design and construction, it will work with architects and
Shoreline’s affiliated company, Lochow Ranch Pond & Lake Management, offers complete lake management services that can ensure the new body of water is the best it can be. The experts at Lochow Ranch will help you maintain a crystal blue lake or a healthy fish population that meets your goals.

Dan Cabela, host of the hit TV series "Hard Truths of Conservation," is an avid hunter who trusts his Zarges + KOR gun case for peace of mind. Having been to six continents and more than 30 countries around the world documenting conservation stories, Dan understands the importance of protecting valuables during travel. With its durable aluminum shell and watertight, impact-resistant design, his rifles are well protected and secure. And thanks to KOR’s VRS Technology, there’s no need to cut custom foam for each rifle he takes. The interchangeable precision fit ensures his firearm is secure, whether on a bumpy Land Cruiser ride across the bush in Africa or in the bellow of a bush plane in Alaska.
Zarges + KOR: One case, countless missions
About six million hunters and gun enthusiasts rely on Craig Boddington for credible information. This number is based on TV appearances, book sales, editorial commitments and social media. For 50 years, Craig has maintained credibility even into the era of social media. This is a nearly impossible feat.
I’ve worked alongside Craig for 20 of those years. The first decade was spent filming and producing many of his TV shows. Then, despite being 20 years his junior, I realized I couldn't keep up with him. I needed a new plan.
As that first decade wrapped up, 30 countries in the rearview mirror, and 100 episodes in the can, we had shared many camps. I had seen disgusting deer camps where the previous hunter’s toenail clippings were still in the bedsheets, hunts where clients’ lives were needlessly risked and camps where the food was deadly. We’d also been in affordable mom-and-pop camps that were clean and cozy and remote five star camps with chef whites. We’d lived the best and the worst outfitters had to offer.
At year 11, the epiphany hit me. It was dinner time in deer camp. I was exhausted. Craig was energized and holding court as he’s expected to do. While I knew I was unable to keep up with him, I wanted to continue working together. This is when it occurred to me that his hard-won credibility could help the “good guys” among outfitters. It could also help the serious hunters that wanted a life changing hunt.
Nothing we did from there was particularly brilliant. The model existed. The MICHELIN Guide, The Good Housekeeping Seal, Orvis Endorsed Lodges all existed. We simply had a particularly valuable knowledge base — what makes a great outfitter.
Along with credibility and our knowledge base, we made a commitment to vet our members thoroughly. We perform background checks and we check our contacts and regional professional organizations. If they survive this, we travel to inspect each outfit. We knew this would be expensive and time consuming.
As Craig states in our first commercial, “When you go on an outfitted hunt, you’re betting more than your hard-earned cash. You’re betting your vacation time, your safety and your hunting dreams. You’ve got to get it right!”
We should have included “your reputation” in the wake of coordinated social media attacks on our livelihoods.
We've said "no" to many outfitters that wanted to join. We’ve booted a few. Websites that offer hunts without vetting are too big of a gamble for a reasonable hunter. You may as well Google the region and species you want to hunt. The inherent risks in hunting include everything from copperheads and black mambas to buffalo charges, why gamble on an outfitter? Save that for the blackjack table.
Do you know a great outfitter?
Book with confidence. Book with a Craig Boddington Endorsed Outfitter.

The Clarion Thermal Riflescope from AGM is a revolutionary dual-lens thermal system which affords shooters the opportunity to switch between two internal lens systems, effectively altering the true base magnification of the optic.
While other electro-optics traditionally rely solely on digitally magnifying the image, it does begin to slowly degrade the resolution as you zoom in on a target. The Clarion was built specifically to afford users the ability to alternate between multiple lenses, which alters the native magnification without degrading the resolution of the display.
Many modern hunters constantly find themselves hunting in different types of terrain, which may indeed be so different that the base magnification of their chosen optic no longer becomes optimal with the secondary hunting situation. Low base magnification optics that optimize a wide field-of-view can quickly become detrimental in wide-open terrain where long-range shots with a narrow field of view and high base magnification are more suitable.
AGM designed the Clarion specifically for these hunters in mind, allowing them to effectively have two different thermal riflescopes with vastly different magnification ranges in a single device.
Add in all the features that AGM’s cutting-edge firmware package bring to bear (recoilactivated video, 10 reticle options, multiple zeroing profiles, audio, AGM connect app compatibility, etc.) and you see why AGM so quickly became a market leader in thermal and digital hunting optics.
WHATEVER YOUR ADVENTURE IS, WE'VE GOT YOU COVERED.
Perched atop a mesa just west of Fort Worth, Greystone Castle is a sight to behold. With four turrets peeking above the tree line, this majestic sight is one to be remembered. From its award-winning wingshooting program to trophy whitetail and exotics, world-class bass fishing and our national champion sporting clays instructor, there is something for everyone at Greystone Castle.
The Gold Medal whitetail deer program offers an all-inclusive package based on the opportunity to hunt the opening weekend of the season. Not restricted by score, it is an exclusive chance to hunt for the whitetail of your dreams.
As evidenced by being named the Orvis 2015 Wingshooting Lodge of the Year, Greystone has mastered the art of bird hunting. The ever-popular mixed bag hunt includes quail, pheasant, chukar and Hungarian partridge. On a past safari, the numbers of plains game animals was impressive, but something kept grabbing my attention. Flushes from francolin and guineafowl, along with dove buzzing around, raised a question.
Does anybody hunt birds around here?
Over the next decade, it was learned several outfitters did, but most often it was a shoot or two as an add-on to a big game safari.
A conversation with Gary Kramer, author of “Waterfowl of the World,” sealed the deal.
“I’ve been wanting to hunt birds in Africa, have you been,” I asked him.
“About 15 times,” he said.
“Who has dogs and does it right,” was the next question.
“Go with Mark and Glen Haldane’s group,” Kramer replied.
Having known Mark Haldane for years, the rest was easy, and after a few years of trying, the trip with Bird Hunters Africa was set in late July of 2024 and a group of six hunters headed on the unusual trip.
After a day spent at the Afton Safari Lodge near the Johannesburg airport, the next stop was Bloemfontein, the center of a modern agricultural region about 4 hours to the south, and the adventure began.
An afternoon dove and rock pigeon hunt got the ball rolling, with red-eyed dove, Cape turtle dove and laughing dove buzzing over the make-shift, 4x4 netted blinds set up by the guides, who also kept your shell pouch full.
“To your left,” one would say (either in broken English or in Zulu while pointing) after spotting the incoming quarry. “Reload, more coming,” they repeated after the shot.
The blinds are set apart, but close enough to allow for cheers for good shots and some good-natured ribbing for misses.
One of several retrievers picked up the birds, and if you were shooting well (or gave them treats), one would “adopt” you and bring all the birds to your blind.
“Wow, you’re shooting well,” another hunter said when looking at the pile of birds.
“About half of them are yours,” he replied.
It was the rock pigeon, though, that brought the biggest challenge. Smaller than the American pigeon with white-spotted wings, they are super-fast and acrobatic, react instantly to any movement, and can make you shake your head.
A giant wild game hamburger brought to the blind provided a welcome break, although the paper plates were flimsy, meaning more treats for the dogs.
It was just the beginning of the adventure, though. The next day brought an early-morning goose hunt while the full moon was setting for decoying pairs and small groups of Egyptian geese, spur-winged geese, the world’s largest wild goose, and the South African shelduck, a large duck that
feeds with the geese, followed by another great dove hunt and a late-evening goose hunt as the birds left a large refuge to feed at night.
The trip isn’t for those who want a lot of time to relax. After a quick breakfast, you’re off to your first hunt, usually in the dark, then regroup for an afternoon of everyone’s favorite, the driven guineafowl hunt (see story on page 32), then again for a dove, goose or duck hunt until the sun sets. It’s wintertime in Africa, and the days are relatively short, so no hunting time is wasted.
Other goose hunts took place in peanut fields out of pits dug into the super-sandy soil of the region, which sits at about 3,500 feet above sea level.
When you finish the day, the lodging is great — everyone gets their own room — the food is exceptional, and the fires provide a gathering spot to have a drink and share stories.
“I can’t believe how hard those spurwings are to bring down,” one hunter said.
Others chimed in:
“Those rock pigeon ate my lunch.”
“My shoulder is sore.”
“The guinea hunting is the craziest thing I’ve ever done — those things are big and fast. I bet five birds flew over my head while I scrambled to reload.”
At Bloemfontein, the last day’s dove hunt was one for the memory books. In a harvested corn field, dove were everywhere when the group pulled in. Most of the group stopped shooting after 10 boxes in a few hours.
“This was just like Argentina,” three members of the group who had hunted there agreed.
After several days in the Bloemfontein area, the trip moved south to the Stormberg mountains, where greywing partridge, more guineafowl and ducks took center stage.
The evening duck hunts took place at small bodies of water in the mountains, so small an avid duck hunter wouldn’t consider hunting there, with just a dozen or so decoys set. While the shooting was fair until sunset, it was crazy for the next 30 minutes (legal in South Africa). Ducks, including the yellow-billed duck (think a black duck with a bright yellow bill), the white-faced whistling duck, redbilled teal and pochard (like a bluebill) piled in, shots were made and the dogs were on the retrieve.
The greywing partridge hunts take place over English pointers, far-ranging dogs that cover the mountainous, treeless terrain. Not a volume hunt, ours was hampered by cold temperatures and high winds, but a few great points were made and one bird dropped.
Dylan Holmes, our lead guide, and Anton Davidson, led our hunts, and the group was amazed with how hard they worked to keep us busy, including having to wake up a few of the jet-lagged hunters before it was time to go. From guiding, constantly cleaning shotguns and arranging ammunition for the different style hunts, to getting the fire going at the end of the day, it’s hard to figure when they actually slept.
At Bird Hunters Africa, you can bring your own shotgun or, as our group did, use their new Blaser
over-and-unders. If you bring your own, bring your cleaning kit, as the sandy soil gets in every nook and cranny.
For the trip, don’t fall for the temperature forecast on your cell phone — it can get and feel much colder, so bring your cold-weather gear just in case. Bringing both sunscreen and your KUIU pants, jacket and stocking cap might seem weird, but you’ll be happy you did. Seeing the minus 9 (Celsius, about 16 degrees for us) reading on the way to a goose blind can be something of a shock, especially for those coming from the Texas summer.
A dozen or so groups, about half from European countries, make the bird-hunting venture with Bird Hunters Africa each year, but the word still isn’t out. It might be the best-kept secret in bird hunting out there.
In the heart of Tanzania’s Kizigo wilderness, a legend was born. A trail camera captured an image of a buffalo unlike any other — a hermaphrodite, a rare anomaly in the natural world. It was October 2023, and that single photo stirred something deep in the hearts of the Ganam team. They knew this was something extraordinary, but would they ever see it again?
Months passed, and the buffalo remained a ghost, hidden in the dense woodland. Then, a hunter arrived with barely three days to hunt. It seemed impossible — a single buffalo in the vast expanse of Kizigo. But the hunter was determined, prepared to leave without a single trophy if he could not find this one, unique animal.
Fortune favors the bold. When the hunters were stalking up to a fierce battle between a group of dagga boys, the Ox of Kizigo broke free, running in the direction of the hunter. From just 50 meters, in the midst of the thick miombo trees, the hunter stepped forward, calm and resolute. Two perfectly placed shots to the shoulder, and the legendary buffalo fell.
In that moment, the hunter and his party stood in awe, not just of the kill, but of the sheer improbability of it all. It was a story of skill and perseverance, of being in the right place at the right time. The wilderness of Kizigo, it seems, had offered a gift — a rare creature, a testament to the balance between hunting and conservation. The Ganam team believes this buffalo was a sign, a recognition of efforts to protect these lands over the past three years. It was the wilderness thanking them, and it will remain a story told around the fires for years to come.

There’s a lot going on under the surface of a lake or pond, and when the body of water is the centerpiece of your rural retreat, unseen changes can catch you off-guard.
Some think once a lake or pond has been built, it will naturally take care of itself. But that is simply not the case if you want a thriving fishery or a landscape water feature that will maximize the aesthetics and recreational possibilities for a property.
“Pond and lake management is best not left to chance,” said John Jones, president of Lochow Ranch Pond & Lake Management. “A properly maintained pond or lake will grace your ranch or farm with natural beauty and endless recreation options for generations to come.”
Lochow Ranch’s certified team of biologists and water maintenance experts provides the full range of lake and pond management techniques, including water quality, clarity testing, vegetation control, removal of pond weeds, liming and fertilizing, algae control, erosion and sediment control, identification and control of predators and much more.
If a fishery is your goal, Lochow Ranch’s experts bring state-of-the-art techniques and expertise to maximizing your environment for game fish to thrive. The team is known across the South for its electrofishing surveys that yield the most accurate inventory of a lake’s fish population. The company also provides fish stocking, including a full range of game and forage fish, as well as supplemental fish
feeders that help spur growth.
“We’re growing some really big fish,” Jones said. New technologies and management techniques are at the forefront.
“The drought has ended in most areas, but not so much out west,” Jones said. “We’re addressing restocking where drought was an issue. We’re using drones to help analyze lakes and fisheries, and we’re constantly working toward solutions on otter deterrence and trapping — they can wipe out a lot of your best and biggest fish.”
Everything starts with the property owners’ goals for the lake, whether swimming, boating or a fishing hotspot for family and friends.
“Many property owners like some combination of all three,” Jones said.
Lochow Ranch provides turnkey pond and lake management services across the south central United States. The company also works in partnership with its affiliated company, Shoreline Consulting, to design and build new lakes and expand or renovate existing ones.
These professional techniques take the guesswork out of maintaining your body of water and ensure you can make faster progress toward your goals.
“We can establish fundamental management practices,” Jones said. “Having that solid foundation can help your lake thrive despite seasonal disturbances and broader environmental conditions.”
Lochow Ranch’s biologists and fleet of trucks
are based in Bryan/College Station, TX. They have serviced or consulted at over 20,000 ponds across the region — and they are offering their services into the southeastern states.
“Our aim is to help you reach your goals so you can sit back, relax and enjoy your beautiful body of water,” Jones said.
