Reinvented for 2016 The Leupold VX-3i In today’s world, riflescopes are more advanced than ever. When speaking of riflescope performance, most are judged by their overall light transmission. But not all light transmission is equal. It’s not enough to merely have a high percentage of light transmission because most riflescopes are optimized to transmit midday light, when light transmission matters least. It is for this reason that Leupold optical engineers worked diligently to redesign one of the greatest scopes of all time into the new VX-3i. The VX-3i is built around Leupold’s new Twilight Max Light Management System, which balances all available light wavelengths, eliminates glare and pushes resolution to the limit. Beginning with leadfree lenses, Leupold applies Twilight Max lens coatings. These coatings optimize the red and blue frequencies of light, those found at the very first and last moments of the day, while maintaining a high transmission of the light at the center of the spectrum, delivering exceptional contrast and low-light performance. The lenses are then topped off with Diamondcoat 2 for the highest level of abrasion resistance. The next step is the elimination of glare. This step actually lowers overall light transmission by removing or absorbing stray light, only transmitting useful light to your eye, creating an improved sight picture. This is accomplished by first precision machining the VX-3i’s interior and then by blackening the edges of key lenses within the scope. Leupold engineers didn’t stop at light management on the VX-3i. They began with a one-piece main tube crafted out of aircraft-grade aluminum for unrivaled durability. With a large range of magnifications, from 1.5-5x to the jaw-dropping 8.5-25x, 1 inch and 30mm tube diameters, and eight reticle options, this new riflescope will be ideal for virtually any hunting situation. An aggressively redesigned power selector is easy to grasp and turn and allows the shooter to quickly verify the power setting due to larger and brighter numbering. The dual spring, 1/4 MOA finger click adjustment system ensures match grade repeatability and strength. Lastly, Leupold purges the scope of all its oxygen and replaces it with their second-generation Argon/Krypton gas, which more effectively resists thermal shock and ensures a 100-percent fogproof and waterproof seal. It took Leupold to bust the myth of “light-gathering” optics and turn the conversation to light transmission. Now prepare to hear a lot more about light management, as everyone tries to catch up to the new VX-3i. Check out the new Leupold VX-3i at your local outdoor retailer today.

New G34 Pro from Stealth Cam Stealth Cam, introduced in 2000, quickly became the leader in scouting camera innovation. Continuing to advance technology to the next level, Stealth Cam introduces the new G34 Pro, with 12 megapixel images and HD video recording. The G34 Pro is 10 percent smaller in size than the original G series and features a textured housing with rub to help blend in with its surroundings. An adjustable PIR sensor allows the camera to sense out to 100 feet, as well as security mode with SD card overwriting. Security mode ensures your card will never fill up and stop working, rather retaining the most recent information the SD card capacity can hold. The G Pro series feature the same easy-to-use interface with a digital LCD screen that reads out to you exactly what setting your camera is set to, so there is no guesswork involved. Now shipping with preset date and time, you don’t have to worry about forgetting to set your date/ time, and can eliminate one step of the setup process. The G Pro series retains the Matrix Advanced Blur Reduction technology. This allows the user to choose from two settings at night. Standard mode is chosen for optimal image quality when placed over an area you know the subject will be stationary (feeders, small waterholes, scrapes, etc.). Advanced mode is chosen for the most usable images in areas with more movement

such as food plots, trails, gate crossings or roads. By choosing advanced mode, you will lose some illumination range at night (approximately 15 percent) but you will always be able to tell what your subject is. Serious hunters agree a nonblurry image of that big buck is much better than blurry, unidentifiable antlers and body. Get the images every hunter dreams to see in the field with the G34 Pro by Stealth Cam. This camera can be purchased at major sporting goods retailers and pro shops, as well as online retailers.

Go 45 miles on one charge The Hisun Sector E1 electric vehicle simply goes farther than the competition. With its maintenance-free Discover dry cell battery, the utility vehicle will cover more than 45 miles of hunting land on a single charge, plenty of distance for any Texas hunter, whether in the West Texas mountains or the South Texas brush country. “The biggest fear of customers is that they will run out of battery power,” said Shane Wilson, vice president of engineering at the McKinney, Texasbased Hisun Motors. “The dry cell battery technology is great, it gives close to double the run time as the lead acid batteries.” The Sector E1 also provides power and performance. The 48-volt, 38-horsepower AC drive train covers the toughest terrain without the noise of a gas-powered engine. Nitrogen-assisted independent suspension and four-wheel hydraulic brakes keep the rider in full control. The 10-inch ground clearance and a wider wheelbase provides stability and performance. The Sector E1 is programmed for a top speed of 25 mph in accordance with Low Speed Vehicle regulations. The batteries’ charger may be the vehicle’s most wanted component. “With the dry cell battery, you can use a bigger charger to charge the vehicle

faster,” Wilson said. “You won’t boil out the acid or have corrosion issues, because no gas escapes during the charging process.” The Delta Q charger is lighter and more powerful, with a higher current at 1,200 watts. “And it has an active fan that keeps the charger cool during the charging process,” Wilson said. For performance, power and run time, choose the Sector E1 from Hisun Motors.

Walker’s new Razor-XV with Bluetooth While hunting or shooting, ear protection is a must, but hunters and shooters struggle with hearing conversations or the sounds made by incoming animals. Now, with Walker’s Razor-XV Earbud Headset, they can do both, or even take a phone call. More than 25 years ago, Bob Walker introduced the original Walker’s Game Ear and revolutionized hearing protection and enhancement. Now, Walker’s introduces the entirely new Razor-XV Earbud Headset for 2016 in a striking new design that features Bluetooth technology. The Razor-XV incorporates a neck-worn device featuring retractable digital ear buds that provide incredible comfort for all-day shooting. The “behind the neck” design allows for zero interference with you or your firearm, allowing for complete focus on your target. These remarkable patent-pending buds will not only protect your hearing, but enhance up to nine times your natural hearing ability as well. Utilizing a Sound Activated Compression circuit (SAC) the Razor XV features a no-fail system for protecting your ears from harmful noises such as muzzle blast, and will actually reduce overall sound output by an impressive 31dB. The Hi Gain omnidirectional microphones provide clear sound enhancement for conversations on the range or to hear firearm instructors’ directions while training. The HD digital speakers provide a wide range audio quality. Now featuring Bluetooth, you can stream your favorite music, or even take a phone

call all while protecting yourself from the harmful effects of muzzle blast. The Razor XV also features independent volume control between the microphone and Bluetooth feed. In a hunting scenario, you can quietly listen to music, stream a sports game, or take a phone call and not miss out on anything running in. The kit includes two different styles of noisereducing foam tips in a variety of sizes to ensure a proper fit for maximum noise reduction. The RazorXV is equipped with an autoshut off (low power mode) after four to six hours. An AC wall adapter with USB port and a one-meter micro USB cord is provided for convenient charging.

Hunt in comfort for life with Dillon blinds Dillon Manufacturing began making custom fiberglass parts for other manufacturers years ago. In 2003, the Athens, Texas company made a few fiberglass hunting blinds for its owner and a few friends. “After we realized there was a market for a blind that would last a lifetime, we started producing blinds and selling them through a dealer network,” said owner Janice Loden Vaughn. “We have continued to make improvements on the blinds and to produce enough blinds to meet our demand for 275 dealers throughout the U.S.” The slogan for the blinds, “Blinds So Comfortable You Might Just Sleep Through Your Hunt,” is a familiar scenario for many Texas hunters. Weather is an uncontrollable variable that can make hunting in the rain, wind and freezing temperatures an unbearable task. A Dillon blind removes you from the elements. The most obvious advantage of hunting from a Dillon Manufacturing blind is concealment. Nestled in this one-piece, hard-shell, fiberglass-insulated blind, you are almost invisible to the animals outside allowing you to get away with more movement. So not only does the blind keep you concealed, but also warm. Dillon’s blind windows are real glass in a swing-sash frame with a felt weather-strip that quietly and easily opens and closes with one hand. You can bring a multitude of items into this blind you would never consider when hunting outside in the elements. Your binoculars, rangefinder and drinks can be placed on the built-in shelves. The new octagon blind will give you a 360-degree view. Dillon blinds come in a number of sizes from 4x4 to its roomy Octagon Blind in either 5x5 or 6x6. The Hex blind comes in two sizes, while there are three sizes of the Classic Gun/Bow Combo Blinds. The Dillon blinds are available in green or camo pattern and are available with or without a tower.

The old muley buck By Craig Nyhus

Lone Star Outdoor News Not long after Jon Preston bought the 10,000 El Rancho Escondido in Brewster County, a mule deer buck fawn was born. Thanks to the new owner, the buck fawn lived much longer than most. Preston’s wildlife management practices helped keep the buck alive, along with the other deer, aoudad and javelina on the ranch. Where did the buck find food? How did he get enough water? How many mountain lions did he either see or smell? How did he avoid a bullet? Certainly, the young buck was a visitor to one of the protein feeders Preston placed on the property. “After I bought the ranch, I started a feeding program using a mule deer-specific feed,” Preston said. “I got the cows off of the ranch full time and started a rotational grazing system using stockers only. That brought the grass back, as well as several types 16 |

of desirable plants. After awhile, there was a lot more browse for the deer.” In the Trans Pecos, water is always an issue, for both livestock and wildlife. “There was a water system for the cattle there when I bought it,” Preston said. “We upgraded it and made it wildlife friendly.” During the years of extensive drought during the peak of the buck’s life, he certainly visited the water sources regularly. Hunting on the ranch was managed conservatively and selectively. “We let the deer get some age on them,” Preston said. “We were very conservative, we only would be shooting older bucks. We took fewer bucks than the TPWD biologist recommended, and most of what we took were management deer.” Most of the predation risk came from mountain lions. “We learned that if the deer stopped using an area, there is a cat around there,” Preston said. “The bucks, especially, would avoid the area and it would take a

year or two for them to get them back. If we knew there was a cat, we went after him pretty hard.” Would the buck have survived more than a decade without these efforts? Living through intense heat, big, cold winds, years of drought, fights with other bucks and an uptick in mountain lions, the answer is likely not. In January, the buck was seen during a late-season hunt on the Managed Lands Deer Permit ranch. His body had begun to decline, and discussions ensued regarding his age. “I think he’s 5,” said guide Tom Smith, when the buck was seen along a ridge. The current ranch manager, Sawyer Wright, took a look at the buck and offered a different opinion. “Look how beat up he is,” Wright said. “He’s been through a lot. He’s an older buck.” Although more than 100 mule deer were seen during the first two days, no other mature, good bucks were seen. On the third

DEER HUNTING TEXAS ANNUAL 2016

David J. Sams, Lone Star Outdoors News

day, the decision was made to try again to find the buck. He was located in the same general area. After the buck was on the ground, a close look at his body showed his age. Covered in scars and ticks, it was clear the buck had been around for at least a decade. At the skinning shed, more signs led those present to believe it was longer that that. Many of the buck’s molars were missing, and the remaining teeth were little more than nubs. Two puncture wounds (neither from a bullet) pierced into the buck’s

Lone Star Outdoor News

lungs. “How old is he?” was asked. “There’s no way to tell,” Wright said. “Other than he’s more than 10 years old. I don’t think he was going to make it to next season.” Taxidermist Bill Gallagher of Maypearl guessed the buck’s age at 13. “He could be older,” he said. “I’ve never seen a buck so beat up and full of ticks.” Thanks to the efforts of one landowner, the buck, born shortly after the ranch was purchased, now hangs on an office wall. It was an honor to hunt him.

Chignon blinds provide comfort, strength The innovations keep coming at All Seasons Feeders, and the Little and Big Chignon blinds have been another big hit. “The Chignon blinds have the same quality at a lower price,” said All Season’s Zach Gates. “It still has 2-inch insulation, ‘Polycool’ coating and has more characteristics than our previous blinds. What’s even better is we were able to get more efficient with our use of materials and lower the cost. This is where ASF continues to excel, bringing high-end products to consumers at an affordable price.” The Chignons are square with trimmed corners, and have a 240-degree viewing area. “You can add a window to the door if you want to look out the back of the blind,” Gates said. Texas hunters need to keep cool in October and keep warm in December and January. The Chignon blinds are at least 15 degrees cooler than the competition. “We used dual air vents to allow more heat to escape out of the blind,” Gates said. “And the thick insulation will keep the blinds warmer in winter, too.” The Little Chignon measures 5x5 with three 36-inch windows, while the Big Chignon is 7x7, with three 36-inch windows and four bow windows. Both blinds are offered with a 5- or 8-foot tower. Foam-padded gun rests included with each blind fit over the three, 36x12-inch tinted glass windows. Custom shelving can be added for $250, making the shot even steadier. The setup is easier with the Chignon blinds, Gates said. “You just have to slide the legs up into the blind frame,” he said. “You still need to use a forklift to pick the blind up. Then you undo two bolts, lower the ladder, put in handrail extensions and it’s done. With a lift, you can set it up in 30 minutes or less.” The Big Chignon on the 8-foot tower retails for $3,999, while the Little Chignon, the most popular model, costs $2,500. “It’s the last blind you’ll have to buy,” Gates said.

RUGGED, QUIET BRUSH COUNTRY CAMO Brush Country Camouflage is all ears when it comes down to business. Listening to the needs of outdoor enthusiasts is the key to the company’s future success, according to management. Brush Country went under new management about four years ago. Focusing on the customer’s wants and needs became a top priority after the business changed hands. Besides blending in with the terrain, customers have asked for comfortable, quiet clothing — and the company has obliged. Brush Country camo doesn’t hang, tear or snag. Naturally, the Henderson-based company’s camo is great for the Texas terrain. “I can’t swear to it, but I can allude to it — that we’re the original Texas camouflage,” said owner Pete Watson. But it’s also a top performer in other states and on the international scene. Brush Country has been successfully used on international hunts in South Africa, for example. Expanding the product line is part of his business plan as well. Aqua Brush, a bright blue camo for fishing enthusiasts, was introduced two years ago. Plans are to mute the color scheme for 2017. Last year, the Fowl Weather outerwear line was developed. The material isn’t plastic like some outerwear. Instead, it’s a quiet, water-resistant material. Brush Country also offers caps, ladies wear and accessories such as coolers, utility bags, cell phone covers and casual wear clothing great for everyday use. Of course, extra products are important, but the company’s bread and butter is performance in the field. “If the animals can see you, you’re not wearing Brush Country,” Watson said.

Cleaning firearms made easy, safe with Breakthrough Clean Brittney Glaze Avid hunter and host of Destination Whitetail

TRULY ODORLESS GUN CLEANING PRODUCTS

Only Breakthrough® Clean offers the world’s completely odorless, stainfree Military-Grade Solvent containing non-toxic ingredients and lubricants that can withstand extreme temperature variances, so they won’t gum up in cold weather or liquefy in extreme heat. Get the best odorless gun cleaning products to help you stay on top of your game. Hunt clean. Hunt with Breakthrough® Clean.

Breakthrough Clean Technologies is an odorless, eco-friendly cleaner/ lubricant that is ushering in a new era for firearm maintenance. Traditionally, conventional cleaning products have been toxic for both you and your firearm. They tend to work against the hunter’s needs, give away noxious odors, or even freeze your gun shut. Breakthrough Clean has simplified this by producing a line of cleaners/ lubricants that are technologically refined and affordable, making cleaning your firearms faster and safer than ever. Breakthrough Solvent The Breakthrough Solvent is a petroleum-based hydrocarbon that seeks out carbon and moves it out of the firearm without causing any damage to your firearms components or finish. It is a PH-neutral solvent that does not freeze, and can even be reused if filtered through coffee ground filters. Battleborn Lubricants The Battleborn line of lubricants consists of synthetic-based oils/greases that have been designed to work under the most arduous of temperatures. The Battleborn oil goes from -90 to +417, the Battleborn grease goes from -75 to +510, and the HP-Pro oil goes from -65 to +507. All of the lubricants are also odorless, do not freeze and are classified as food grade. That means that you can work on your food plots without risk of cross-contamination. The Breakthrough Clean products are the choice of gun owners and hunters who settle for nothing less than the best when it comes to the care of their firearms.

Texas Premier Agency uses hunting, fishing knowledge in fundraising Brianna Ostrander and Laura Kasha both love to hunt and fish, making working at fundraisers for outdoor-related conservation groups an easy adjustment. “We met five or six years ago,” Kasha said. “We worked for another promotional agency. We decided to go out on our own and started in June of this year.” Since that time, their bookings have ramped up. “We have 35-40 girls now,” Ostrander said. “We had 20 girls at the Quail Coalition banquet in Fort Worth on Oct. 20.” The owners stress the marketing side of the business. “A lot of times when people come to our events, they don’t see us as a third party entity — they see us as part of the group we are working for,” Kasha said. “We learn about the brand and share positive feelings about the organization and help them all have a great time.” Much of what the agency does involves fundraising efforts for conservation groups, and most are hunting or fishing related, like the Lone Star Outdoor News' Wild Game

Supper on Oct. 5 at the Beretta Gallery in Dallas. “We’re hunters,” Kasha said. “We understand the conservation message and the hunter. In the past five months, we’ve helped raise more than $500,000.” But Texas Premier Agency is more than raffle girls. “We do consulting and help groups with ideas to help them better raise funds,” Kasha said. “And we do marketing for some for-profit companies. If a company has a big client and is sharing a sales presentation, we learn about the job and do the presentation, sharing our energy that will help them seal the deal.” While the agency is based in Austin, they will go anywhere in the U.S. “We’re doing a banquet in Michigan soon,” Ostrander said. Their favorite hunts? “Mine was a whitetail hunt where I shot a buck scoring 183,” Ostrander said. Kasha’s favorite hunt was different. “It was a helicopter hog hunt,” she said.

Executive retreat for hunters at Ford Family Ranch Nestled in the woods of Franklin County in East Texas sits the Ford Family Ranch, owned by Rick Ford, who has developed the ultimate hunting ranch for families, friends or corporate entertainment. “It is now 1,100 acres, and it’s heavily wooded,” Ford said. “It’s probably 70 percent trees with a lot of natural cover. The animals don’t feel as pressured.” The main hunting emphasis at the ranch is white-tailed deer. Ford is a licensed deer breeder and has spent the past several years improving the genetics on the ranch. “Last year, we had 14 or 15 bucks topping 200 inches, and a few over 300,” Ford said. “We have a good mix of typical and nontypical deer.” The ranch also offers exotics, and during any given hunt one may see eight or 10 different species. The exotics include elk, fallow deer, blackbuck antelope, axis, red stag and a variety of rams. “We hunt in unique blinds or by spot-and-stalk,” Ford said. The accommodations and service are second to none. Six private cabins can sleep up to six persons each, with queen-sized beds. A 7,000-square-foot pavilion was added with a full commercial kitchen, seven seating areas, a 14-foot fireplace and 11 televisions to catch football games between hunts. “It’s the true turnkey experience,” Ford said. “It’s an executive-style hunt.” Ford’s son, Chris, manages the ranch, along with five full-time employees there for the hunters. Just 1.5 hours from Dallas’ Love Field and 2.5 hours from DFW International Airport, they will pick up customers in a custom, 6-door Excursion with a gun safe in the back. All hunts are fully guided, and animals harvested are skinned, quartered and packed, ready for the trip home, or staff will take the meat to a local processor if desired. A taxidermist will come to the ranch if requested. “It’s a true executive retreat for hunters,” Ford said.

Hunting the

57 buck

By Craig Nyhus

Lone Star Outdoor News Larry Owens, at 74 years old, has hunted all of his life, but had never shot a deer worthy of putting on the wall. Two years ago, he got the opportunity in Dimmitt County. The rugged Willis resident reminds people of a western movie star from the 1970s, part comedian and part Marlboro Man. “Every once in awhile you hunt with a true character,” said Lone Star Outdoor News’ CEO David J. Sams, who hunted with Owens. “We enjoyed having him in camp; his laughter and robust humor kept everyone in stitches. And he found chores to do around camp and he did them without asking. I looked over and he had the blower out and was cleaning up one afternoon.” The Vietnam vet wasn’t very interested in sharing stories from his experience. “I got drafted. I went ahead and went. I came back,” Owens said. “That’s all I want to talk about that.” He was quick to talk about the catfish he landed in the Texas State Catfish Championship in 1967, right before he left for Vietnam. “I caught a 103-pounder, it was 54 inches long and 36 inches around the belly,” Owens said. “Boy, those belly steaks were real good.” Owens saw a good number of bucks during his hunts in South Texas. “The first day, we rattled up seven bucks, then moved to another spot and saw a big 8-pounter, but Larry couldn’t see it,” Sams said. “The next day, we rattled up more deer. The rut was in full force. One of the bucks ran within 30 feet of us.” One big buck made an appearance after the a rattling session. “He stuck his head out through the brush,” Sams said. “There was a red ear tag visible — I had to tell Larry not to shoot, as it was one of the few breeder deer on the ranch. He said it might have been the biggest buck he had ever seen.” Owens was scheduled to go home, but his hunt was extended a few more days. The rutting activity slowed, so he hunted out of two different blinds, looking for a deer called the 57 buck, with 5 points on one side and 7 on the other.

David J. Sams, Lone Star Outdoors News

“We switched guides because my luck was running out,” Sams said. That afternoon, after the feeder went off, 57 stuck his head out. Owens got the gun out of the window and fired. Owens said it wasn’t buck fever that caused him to miss the deer. “I had my new rifle, a Winchester .3006,” he said. “It had a 3-pound trigger on it. I’m used to a 1/2-pound trigger. I just pulled off of it. “It wasn’t me getting nervous. It was that damn trigger. I rest my case.” Owens got a glimpse of the buck the next morning, his last day to hunt. “We saw him standing in tall grass but we couldn’t get a shot at him,” he said. The hunt was over, but, sitting around the fire, there was time for another story that matched Owens’ Marlboro Man persona. “Back in 1982, I was sitting on a picnic table at the county fair drinking a cold beer,” Owens said. “A guy came up to me and asked if I would like to be in a commercial. He asked me to stand by a barbecue pit and say something. He said I had to put the beer down and spit my tobacco out.” After waiting for the man, Owens took his cue. “I raised the pit and said, ‘Hmm, that smells good to me,”’ he said. “Later, I got a phone call from New York City asking if I was the guy with the sideburns. The lady told me I was going to be in a Kodak commercial, taking the place of James Garner.” Later, the checks started rolling in. “I had to sign up with the actor’s guild,” Owens said. “Then, checks came for amounts like $281 or $410. In all, it totaled about $14,300. It came in handy, I used it to buy furniture.”

The ultimate in stealth and concealment With its spacious 6-foot by 6-foot interior, there’s plenty of room for up to three adults, or two adults and two children, to hunt comfortably — whether with a bow, gun or crossbow. The Redneck 6x6 Soft Side 360 blind sports a heavyduty, double-stitched 600 denier flameretardant Ghille/camo cover, and the double-zipper design allows the windows to be opened to any configuration for maximum visibility while maintaining the highest level of concealment. The blind also features a semipermanent heavyduty, powder-coated steel frame built for the toughest of conditions. The frame is constructed of heavy-duty tubular steel and bolts together in about 35-45 minutes. The water-resistant cover attaches to the semipermanent frame with Velcro straps and sewn-on bungee cords and zippers. The cover can easily be removed for offseason storage. The powder-coated steel frame may be left outdoors year-round. The octagonal shape allows for the placement of four 10x46-inch vertical windows and three 14x30-inch horizontal windows. The 77-inch high ceiling gives hunters plenty of room to stand and shoot a bow, and the crossbar located directly below each horizontal window makes a perfect gun rest when combined with the Redneck Window Gun Rest Bag. The blind

Making your mark: Thoughts from a deer-hunting father The first time my son sat with me in a blind on a deer hunt, we watched several does walk across the field with two fawns in tow. “Are you going to shoot one, Daddy?” “No, son. She needs to look after those two young ones with her so they have a chance to grow up.” In 30 seconds of conversation, he learned lessons in ethics, stewardship and integrity. My son saw character in action and the memory stuck like glue. Purple, gold and scarlet hues of a sleepy sun gave way to the silver light signalling the end of our deer hunting adventure. I would say sometimes you win and sometimes you lose; however, in this case, leaving empty-handed with another cornerstone of my legacy in place was a much more significant win than any “buck of a lifetime.”

Hunting is as much about finding, providing and consuming teachable moments as it is sustenance itself, perhaps even more so; in fact, for many of us, making our mark has little to do with deer and everything to do with hunting down our legacies… but we do love the heck out of it when we can do both. – Kevin Reese

At Wildcat Creek, it’s a quail and pheasant hunting adventure Quail and pheasant hunters need not travel far to experience a memorable hunt, luxurious facilities and fabulous food. Wildcat Creek Quail Hunting Resort has birds at the ready — where a memorable quail or pheasant hunting adventure awaits. For wingshooters who favor the pheasant, full pheasant hunts are being offered this year. WCR, a family affair and the vision of Ron and Evonne Parker and their sons, sports a new lodge and an atmosphere that is truly family-oriented. “We want the experience to be first-class but yet not stuffy,” said owner Ron Parker. Located in Red River County near Detroit, the property consists of 1,200-plus acres of well-managed land that will take hunters back in time. The habitat, birds and dogs are first-rate, with fields cleared out of the thick woods by Parker, who also owns a construction business. “And we have cleared saplings in several areas to offer hunters a true Georgia-style quail hunt with tough shots through the trees,” Ron said. “Our customers love it.” Wingshooters may want to get their hunts booked, though, as the word is getting out about Wildcat Creek, where 10 weekends are already fully booked for the upcoming season. Several flight pens allow for flight training for the pen-raised birds, and the birds are released before the beginning of the season. “We want the birds to be as wild as possible and explode out of the grass,” Ron said. After the hunt, the new lodge and the food served at WCR may be even more memorable. WCR also has added competition-style sporting clay station for parties and corporate events.

Wild Game Supper helps new hunters New hunters will benefit from Lone Star Outdoor News’ Wild Game Supper held on Oct. 5 at the Beretta Gallery in Dallas. The annual event supports Lone Star Outdoor News Foundation, and will help create hunters and fishermen for a lifetime. Four first-time deer hunters will head to Atascosa County the weekend of Nov. 11 and hopefully harvest their first buck. More than 250 people enjoyed great food and drink, along with great auction items that helped

raise more than $15,000. Wild game, including hog, elk and deer was provided and cooked by Cinnamon Creek Wild Game Processing in Roanoke, while the wine was provided by Cast Wines of Sonoma County, California. Six-time Olympic medalist Kim Rhode was on hand to show her medals and sign autographs. Additional support for the event was provided by Dallas Safari Club. James Jeanes was the winner of a Beretta A400

shotgun, while Nick Drayovitch of the DSC Conservation Society won a Sako rifle, making him a gun winner two years in a row. The event’s emcee was radio show host Brian Hughes, who auctioned items including a South African safari, a New Zealand red stag hunt, a Texas deer hunt and a duck hunt with Dakota, the Lone Star Outdoor News’ office dog.

The best flavored deer corn After years of testing and development, Robert Champion of The Bait Corn Company developed flavored deer corn that outperforms the rest — and it brings in the deer. The key is in the mix. “We use an oil-based coating at proper concentrates,” Champion said. “Most of the other flavored corn on the market uses less expensive water-based or powder coatings that just don’t work as well.” “In the beginning we tested multiple flavors and concentrations before picking our best,” Champion said. “Some flavors definitely work better than others and those made the cut.” Five flavors were finally chosen and developed: Persimmon, Peanut Butter, White Oak Acorn, Green Apple and Red Delicious Apple. “Regular corn is great, but it’s not always the solution,” Champion said. “Our flavored corn is proven and guaranteed to work better.” All of the Bait Corn is processed in Texas at the El Campo facility, and the corn is placed in 40-pound, easy-open bags. Champion advised that his flavored corn is designed to attract deer and hunt over, as opposed to just being placed in feeders. “The flavors and scents are designed to evaporate over time,” he said. “This evaporation is what gets the flavors in the corn kernels and the scents in the air.” Each 40-pound bag costs $8.99, and the company’s website provides a list of dealers and one of the strongest guarantees in the industry. Champion said the cost is well worth it. “I’m 100-percent convinced it outperforms regular deer corn and it even does better than most of the overpriced attractants,” he said.

First-ever laser rangefinder that handles hand movement This is going to be big. To a Texas hunter, the rangefinder can be the most important hunting tool in the backpack or jacket pocket. Whether in the wide-open spaces of West Texas or the South Texas Brush Country, distances are hard to judge. The difficulty, though, has been holding the small rangefinders steady enough to get a reading. Our hands shake, whether from the excitement of buck fever, effort or age, and there often isn’t anything available to brace the small device. Nikon Sport Optics has solved the problem with its revolutionary new MONARCH 7i Laser Rangefinder — the world's first laser rangefinder to compensate for the human body's physical inability to be completely still. Featuring Nikon's optical VR (Vibration Reduction) Technology, the MONARCH 7i VR is the world's first laser rangefinder to integrate this type of system. The VR Technology reduces the effect of external vibrations caused by unnecessary hand movements while ranging distant objects. For hunters, this means the target mark on the rangefinder

remains stable, even when the body of the rangefinder is being moved. Not only does this provide the user with a steady image, it also stabilizes the activated laser, allowing it to maintain greater alignment for enhanced measurement performance. Nick Kohleffel of Owens Outdoor Sales is a Nikon rep, and just received his 7i VR. “I ranged at deer at 620 yards in my neighborhood one-handed with no rest,” he said. The MONARCH 7i VR represents a major step in hunting technology by

helping alleviate the difficulty of keeping the rangefinder steady enough to range objects as far away as 1,000 yards. Employing Nikon's optical VR (Vibration Reduction) system, vibrations of the image in the 6-power viewfinder caused by hand movement are reduced (by an estimated 80 percent), while simultaneously aligning the viewed image with the irradiated beam for faster, more precise ranging. The VR function begins immediately when the laser rangefinder is on, meaning there is no extra time spent trying to toggle between settings. Holding down the ranging button allows the user to continuously scan for eight seconds. A fast measurement is received (in approximately half a second), regardless of the distance, thanks to Nikon's HYPER READ technology. The MONARCH 7i VR has an effective measurement range of 8-1,000 yards and displays measurements in .1-yard increments. The MONARCH 7i VR Laser Rangefinder also boasts an uncluttered display and Nikon's ID (Incline/Decline) Technology to compensate for uphill or downhill shooting angles by providing the one number that is needed to make the shot — the horizontal distance. Another feature of the MONARCH 7i VR Laser Rangefinder is the ability to switch between First Target Priority Mode (provides reading of the closest target among a group) and Distant Target Priority Mode (provides reading of the farthest target among a group). Whether your subject is in front of or behind a patch of brush, this setting can greatly improve your ability to get the most accurate reading depending on the situation. Not only does the MONARCH 7i VR come in a compact and lightweight body, it is also waterproof for those unexpected wet conditions (battery chamber is rainproof). The suggested retail price of the MONARCH 7i VR Laser Rangefinder is $399.95.
