DEER HUNTING

The Leupold Custom Shop

I

t’s more than a maker of riflescopes. Leupold & Stevens is a uniquely American icon — and beyond that a company that has defined a culture. For the first half of the 20th century, Leupold & Stevens had nothing to do with riflescopes. It built instruments that measured new land and flowing water. After the Second World War, Marcus Leupold struck out on a new venture. A hunting trip had ended badly when his riflescope fogged. “I could build a better scope than this!” he thundered. Shortly thereafter, Leupold and Stevens became the first American manufacturer to market fogproof riflescopes. As scope technology advanced, so did the needs of hunters and shooters. Sometimes, what’s in the box is not the perfect solution. It was this realization that spawned the Leupold Custom Shop in 2005. From simple reticle changes to custom finishes, the Leupold Custom Shop has the tools it takes to deliver its customers the one-of-a-kind scope they are looking for. Sometimes these riflescopes even become part of Leupold’s standard offerings, such as the CDS and variable power scout scopes. The Leupold Custom Shop is always dreaming up new ways to modify their scopes. Custom reticles are now being offered that match specific cartridge ballistics, or one can choose from a wide array of mil-based or MOA-based styles. Adjustments may now be changed in order to match the reticle to the adjustment, mil to mil for example, or have bullet-drop compensation dials added. Scopes can be custom-lasered with names, logos or significant dates for added personalization. And scopes can be custom anodized to complement rifles that don’t come in the standard black or stainless finishes. Today, Leupold and Stevens, Inc. is the preeminent American-owned optics company that employs hundreds of highly skilled people in its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility near Beaverton, Oregon. Family-owned and operated, Leupold offers products that are sold worldwide to hunters, competitive shooters, military and law enforcement personnel, and wildlife observers.

Food, fun and raising money at Wild Game Supper M

ore than 250 people enjoyed great food and drink, along with great auction items at the Lone Star Outdoor News’ 2015 Wild Game Supper held on October 7. The Beretta Gallery hosted the event, which raised more than $15,000 for the Lone Star Outdoor News Foundation, and will help create hunters and fishermen for a lifetime. Wild game, including hog, elk and deer, was provided by Cinnamon Creek Wild Game Processing in Roanoke, while the wine was provided by Cast Wines of Sonoma County, California. Two members of the Dallas Safari Club Conservation Society, Nick Drayovitch and Brent Karrington, were lucky raffle winners of Beretta Xplor A400 shotguns. The event’s emcee was radio show host Big Billy Kinder, who aptly auctioned items that included a South African safari, a New Zealand red stag hunt, a Texas deer hunt at the Tolson Ranch and a piece of art from renowned artist Julie Asher Lee.

Leica’s made-in-America ER 5 riflescopes hit the mark By David J. Sams, Lone Star Outdoor News

T

hree bullets were slung out of the barrel. Of the 6.5 Creedmoor rounds, none hit the steel boar target 500

yards away. “Let me see that gun,” Terry Moore said as he took it from my hands. He took one shot, and got one hit. “There is nothing wrong with this gun — it is shooting perfectly. It must be the shooter,” Moore said as he handed the gun back to me with a huge grin on his face. “All you have to do is put the crosshairs on target,” he instructed. “You told me to hold on the second dot,” I replied. “I know, I wanted you to miss,” he said. Everyone else on the firing line was laughing now, apparently all in on the big joke. I replied, “Oh, I get it now, payback from the deer hunt, where

your shot at 314 yards flew over the target?” The longtime Leica Sport Optics marketing manager has so much confidence in his new Leica ER 5 scopes that he would play a joke on a media guy testing his new products. It was all in fun and pretty humbling as well. Last January, the German company introduced six made-in-America scopes that will interest many Texas hunters. And Lone Star Outdoor News was along at the Recordbuck Ranch to test them. At the range, we shot the different models with second focal plane reticles at long-range steel targets. The wide range 5x zoom factor helped with magnification in the foggy weather and the 4-inch eye relief was comfortable. Then we re-zeroed them in for 100 yards on paper and went hunting catalina goats.

On the second morning of the event, I found my old goat on the top of a foggy mesa. I ranged the animal during a quick break in the fog at 349 yards and held the 2-10x50 scope on the second mil dot in the ballistic reticle as instructed and let the 6.5 Creedmoor fly once again. This time the bullet hit its mark. When we reached the top of the mesa, the bullet had hit right at the aim point — just a little high on the front shoulder. This time I felt fully confident to hold on the dot as instructed. Terry Moore was smiling again. His new scope had just done its job with the shooter and the target animal. The longest shot during the event. With the new ER 5 riflescopes, Leica offers you a range of first-class glass with uncompromising quality and solid engineering, designed for the Texas hunter and shooter.

Brilliant Performance.

Steiner GS3 Helps spot game in any environment T

he Steiner GS3 “game sensing” scope utilizes exclusive CAT (color adjusted transmission) lens coatings to amplify contrast in the peak human vision sensitivity range. The optimized contrast effectively separates game from leafy or shadow-dappled backgrounds, exposing your target to a clean, accurate shot. And the GS3 5x zoom range lets hunters from whitetail country to western big game ranges pair their new scope with their favorite centerfire, rimfire or muzzleloader rifle. And, of course, Steiner’s bedrock reliability will always deliver unfailing performance, whatever firearm or target you prefer.

Deer season is here!

T

he opener of the “General Season,” for most hunters meaning the rifle season, for white-tailed deer is November 7, a date that rivals Thanksgiving and Christmas in priority levels in Texas. No more talk about putting out protein or corn, planting food plots or what cartridges to buy. And no more talk about deer diseases, high or low fences or whether the deer population was helped by the introduction of breeder deer. The talk has shifted to what has been seen on the trail cameras, how old certain deer are and what the management plan is for the ranch this season. Hopefully the blinds have been cleaned out, the lenses of binoculars and scopes have been wiped off with a lens cleaning cloth, the rifles are sighted in and the kids can spend a weekend away from soccer, volleyball or football practice to head to the lease. Good luck to all Texas deer hunters this season, and don’t forget to bring your camera. Based on reports from the field and from archery hunters, it could be a memorable year!

FALLing in love with the outdoors By Billy Gerke, ForEverlast

T

he leaves are turning and there is a chill in the air, campfires are burning and we’re gathered around in chairs, three generations of hunting in our veins, talking about what might happen on opening day….” This is the opening line to a tune written by Rhett Akins and recorded for industry favorite Michael Waddell’s Bone Collector album. With all that fall brings to us by way of hunting seasons and cooler temperatures, it is truly one of the best times of year for someone who cherishes their time in the outdoors. The most refreshing part is the gathering of family and friends around a campfire in the evening to share stories and catch up on time gone by. When I am in the outdoors, it makes me feel closest to God, as it is there that I realize all we have been given to experience in this life. From the breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountains to the coastal waters of Texas, there is nothing like breathing in the fresh air and capturing memories that can never be erased. From a very young age, I remember my dad toting me down to a piece of property in South Texas where I cut my teeth in the outdoors. The time he invested in me inspired my passion for the outdoors, and ultimately our company and the job I get to do every day.

I encourage you to get outdoors this fall, and while in pursuit of a trophy for your wall, don’t forget about the little things that make the hunt and outdoor experience what it truly is. Take someone new hunting or fishing, so they too can “Fall in love with the outdoors.” But now I will send for many fishermen, declares the Lord, and they will catch them. After that I will send for many hunters, and they will hunt them down on every mountain and hill and from the crevices of the rocks. Jeremiah 16:16 Family, friends, and the great outdoors, it’s who we are —ForEverlast.

Let me take a selfie...

FROM THE DEER BLIND It’s not just young people or those seeking fame who like it. While sitting in a deer blind waiting for deer and other animals to start moving, hunters do various things. Some peruse the Internet on their phones, while others read a book or take a nap. During hunts with the Lone Star Outdoor News Foundation, another activity passed the time — deer blind selfies. Groups sitting in different blinds had one requirement before the action began — share a self-portrait, better known as a selfie, from the blind with the other groups. Guides, spouses and parents of the hunter enjoyed glancing at the photos as much as the hunter, even the young hunter. And, of course, as many have seen on their smartphone, some got a little goofy.

At Wildcat Creek, it’s a quail and pheasant hunting adventure

Q

uail and pheasant hunters need not travel far to experience a memorable hunt, luxurious facilities and fabulous food. Wildcat Creek Quail Hunting Resort has birds at the ready — where a memorable quail or pheasant hunting adventure awaits. For wingshooters who favor the pheasant, full pheasant hunts are being offered this year. WCR, a family affair and the vision of Ron and Evonne Parker and their sons, sports a new lodge and an atmosphere that is truly family-oriented. “We want the experience to be first-class but yet not stuffy,” said owner Ron Parker. Located in Red River County near Detroit, the property consists of 1,200-plus acres of well-managed land that will take hunters back in time. The habitat, birds and dogs are first-rate, with fields cleared out of the thick woods by Parker, who also owns a construction business. “And we have cleared saplings in several areas to offer hunters a true Georgia-style quail hunt with tough shots through the trees,” Ron said. “Our customers love it.” Wingshooters may want to get their hunts booked, though, as the word is getting out about Wildcat Creek, where 10 weekends are already fully booked for the upcoming season. Several flight pens allow for flight training for the pen-raised birds, and the birds are released before the beginning of the season. “We want the birds to be as wild as possible and explode out of the grass,” Ron said. After the hunt, the new lodge and the food served at WCR may be even more memorable. WCR also has added competition-style sporting clay stations for parties and corporate events.

Nikon’s new riflescopes with BDC Distance Lock technology

N

ikon Sport Optics has released six new riflescopes with a BDC Distance Lock function located in the first focal plane, allowing the riflescope to maintain its scale and distance proportion on a target throughout the entire zoom range. The greatest benefit of these new BDC Distance Lock-equipped riflescopes will be for those who use Nikon’s Spot On Ballistic Program and BDC reticles to compensate for bullet drop at extended ranges. Up until now, all of Nikon’s riflescopes have been in the second focal plane, which means that, as shooters zoom from the lowest magnification to the highest, the reticle appears the same size in their field-of-view but is changing size in relation to their target. For Spot On users, this has meant that the aiming points provided by the popular ballistic app have been specific to one magnification (typically the highest power). With the new BDC Distance Lock function that keeps • MONARCH 3 everything in 3-12x42, 3 4-16x42 the first foand 3 4-16x50SF cal plane, the aiming points FFP Matte BDC provided by the Distance Lock Spot On application will be • PROSTAFF 5 3.5the same, regardless of the 14x40, 5 3.5-14x50 magnification and 5 4.5-18x40SF setting. This is FFP Matte BDC made possible because with a Distance Lock first focal plane riflescope, the reticle stays the same size in relation to your target. Each of the riflescopes features Nikon’s Fully Multilayer Coated lenses that deliver superior light transmission for bright, clear images with balanced color. They are built with 1-inch main body tubes, generous eye relief and a quickfocus eyepiece for extremely easy adjustment. The elevation and windage adjustments are made in clickable increments of 1/4-inch at 100 yards. The turrets all have a Spring-Loaded Instant ZeroReset feature that enables users to lift the turret and return to the “zero” mark after sighting in. This function not only simplifies adjustments in the field, it also makes it easier to relocate one’s zero, should the turrets get accidentally turned. These riflescopes also have a side-focus knob for parallax adjustment. The side-focus knob has distances inscribed on it, making it easy to quickly focus the scope from a particular vantage point. Like all Nikon riflescopes, the MONARCH 3 and PROSTAFF 5 BDC Distance Lock riflescopes are optimized for use with Spot On Ballistic Match Technology. The Spot On program provides users with exact aiming points on the BDC reticle for any load or ammunition at a specified range. Spot On is free online at NikonSportOptics.com/SpotOn and is now free for mobile devices, including the iPhone, iPad and Android platforms. The MONARCH 3 and PROSTAFF 5 riflescopes are waterproof, fogproof and shockproof for exceptional performance under diverse conditions. They are backed by Nikon’s Limited Lifetime Warranty and Nikon’s No-Fault Repair/Replacement Policy for binoculars, riflescopes and fieldscopes.
