Welcome to Adventure DSC 2017 Convention

The biggest hunting, sporting and conservation showcase in Texas is here. The DSC convention and expo returns to the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center and Omni Hotel in Dallas Jan. 5-8, 2017. Sportsmen and women are invited to be a part of another record-breaking event to help support conservation, education and hunter advocacy initiatives around the world. The theme this year is Adventure. The four-day celebration is open to the public and is one of America’s premier fundraisers for conservation. The DSC 2016 convention raised more than $6 million for wildlife programs, public education and hunter advocacy worldwide. The convention also added 450 new DSC members to surpass the 6,000-member mark for worldwide membership. “This should be our biggest and best convention to date,” said DSC Executive Director Ben Carter. “Exhibitors and attendees are excited for the convention and we are expecting to raise more money than ever to support DSC’s efforts to protect hunting and wildlife.” The expo offers 2017’s first opportunity to shop for hunts

with top outfitters from around the globe. Displays also include world-class sporting gear, firearms, art, collectibles, entertainment, seminars, auctions and more. Together, attractions cover the space of nearly nine football fields. Daily admission to the convention is $20 per person, with multi-day and discounted family packages available. GO WHERE OTHERS CAN’T WITH LEUPOLD’S VX-6HD Leupold gave its VX-6HD new high-definition lenses for sharpened clarity, and the Twilight Max Light Management System for even greater low-light performance. To take it totally over the top, they added an in-scope cant indicator, a throw lever for fast magnification changes and an even more robust erector system. Your VX-6HD is ready for anything and everything. Mount your VX-6HD perfectly level using the in-scope cant indicator. The illuminated reticle flashes when the scope is at an angle, and stops when it’s level. You can shoot more accurately at longer distances by ensuring your rifle is level. This innovative feature can be turned on or off by the user based on preference. And speaking of shooting at longer ranges, the VX6HD allows you to instantly dial in your range and shoot more accurately with the CDS-ZL2 (ZeroLock 2) dials. The CDS dials are 1/4 MOA and are cut to your specific bullet ballistics, ensuring you have the confidence to take that long shot. The zero lock feature ensures you won’t accidently move your adjustments, and allows for a quick and reliable return to zero. The first CDS dial is free with your VX-6HD. New to the VX6HD this year is Leupold’s Guard Ion hydrophobic lens coating. This protective layer is designed to help the lenses sheds water, dirt and even fingerprints for a clear sight picture in any conditions. The coating is applied using an ion bombardment process for extreme durability. In addition to the rugged coatings, Leupold is including Alumina flip back covers installed on all new VX6HD riflescopes. As the saying goes, the best just got better. The Leupold VX6 was already the best riflescope from both an optical performance and reliability perspective. But now, the added features and improved functionality make this truly the ultimate riflescope. If it can’t be done with a VX6HD, it can’t be done.

Ranch managers and wildlife biologists choose AntlerMax There is a reason so many Texas ranches use AntlerMax protein deer feeds. Whether the ranch is low or high fenced, AntlerMax is the top choice of ranch managers and wildlife biologists when it comes to supplementing native habitat and promoting overall herd health and antler growth in their deer herd. At the 3,000-acre Rutledge River Ranch south of Uvalde, they have seen the difference firsthand. “We switched to Purina AntlerMax the first year I was here,” said biologist and ranch manager Russell Furnace, who began working at the ranch four years ago. “After the first year, the owners said they had the biggest 1-, 2-, 3- and 4-year olds they have ever had in the pasture.” The next season, the biggest deer ever killed at the ranch was taken, a 250-plus giant. “They hadn’t broken 200 inches before that,” Furnace said. “The longer we’ve been on it, the deer are continuing to improve. Before I got here, the deer weren’t. Now, we can run hunts on the ranch.” Purina is the leader in deer nutrition and research. What separates AntlerMax from other deer feeds is their patented AntlerMax By-Pass Protein and Mineral

12 |

Technology. Developed in 1995 as an innovative first from Purina, the technology promotes antler growth by improving the protein quality ingested by the deer. “Dietary protein from traditional deer pellets and from ingested plants in the habitat is typically broken down by bacteria in the deer’s rumen. The deer then digests the bacteria in its small intestine,” said Dr. Larry Varner, Purina’s wildlife nutritionist. “But the quality of the dietary protein can be degraded by these bacteria, potentially leaving less of the high-quality amino acids available for antler growth.” Purina’s AntlerMax By-Pass Proteins are protected from being broken down by these bacteria, as they bypass the bacteria in the rumen, so the high-quality amino acids are digested in the small intestine, which can support greater antler growth. Science aside, AntlerMax works — and the deer like it, said Ben Binnion, biologist/foreman at the Paloma Ranch. “The best part about it is the consistency of the feed pellet,” Binnion said. “The deer take to it really quick, even when they are first-time feeders.” Purina understands that different

parts of the country have different nutritional strengths and weaknesses. AntlerMax diets are regionally formulated based on extensive analysis of deer livers that highlight regional mineral deficiencies. The unique combination of AntlerMax By-Pass Protein Technology, Mineral Technology, Nutritional Enhancements and Regional Formulations results in a premium feed, designed specifically for deer. In addition, Purina’s AntlerMax feeds include proprietary levels and ratios of essential minerals, including chelated minerals, that help maximize every buck’s genetic potential for antler growth while supporting reproductive performance in does and helping to produce strong, healthy fawns. Furnace said better feed equals bigger bucks, both in the short- and long-term. For more information on Purina’s AntlerMax feeds, visit AntlerMax. com. If you are interested in starting a supplemental feeding program on your

The Patriarch 33 from Nosler is your big-game choice Patriarch: the head of a family or line. That’s what Nosler call the latest and most powerful member of the Nosler Cartridge family, the 33 Nosler. The 33 Nosler brings a new level of power and performance to the standard length action. Capable of firing a 225-grain AccuBond bullet at 3,025 feet per second from one of our Nosler rifles, the .338 caliber Nosler 33 is an excellent choice for hunting just about any big game in the world. When you travel halfway around the world to hunt for species with extremely limited licenses, you have to know that your rifle and ammunition possess the power necessary to take animals quickly and cleanly. While the ability of trackers in Africa to follow game is nothing short of amazing, I prefer not to have to rely on their skills when a once-ina-lifetime trophy is on the line. When I shoot an animal, I want it to drop on the spot and that requires an equal measure of power and precision. Fortunately, both abound in the 33 Nosler cartridge. I consider it the greatest big game cartridge ever created, which is why I chose it as my one rifle to take on safari this year in Tanzania. From roan and sable down to smaller game like lesser kudu and Thompson’s gazelle, the 33 Nosler in my Liberty rifle handled everything with authority. Between the rugged simplicity and dependability of the Model 48 Nosler Rifle and the raw power and accuracy of the 33 Nosler cartridge, I had complete confidence that when a trophy was in my crosshairs, all I had to do was break the shot clean and the rest would take care of itself. I was able to take a total of eight plains game species on that trip, and my PH and I were simply astounded at how quickly animals went down when shot with the 33, no matter how big or far away they were. One thing is for sure, the 33 is definitely “enough gun.” If you are booking a dream hunt his year, consider taking a new 33, and giving the trackers a break.

DEF Becomes OTF: Our Name is Changing – Not Our Mission! The Dallas Ecological Foundation, a qualified 501(c)(3) organization, is changing its name, but our mission remains the same. Our mission statement is, “… to teach outdoor education and to promote and fund conservation of wildlife worldwide.” We have decided to change our name to the Outdoors Tomorrow Foundation to help set us apart from other organizations in the outdoor industry. From humble beginnings in 1981, we have grown steadily through the years to offer our unique Outdoor Adventures program in hundreds of schools in states from California to Maine, and we continue to grow. We have tens of thousands of students enrolled in Outdoor Adventures with over 150,000 students participating in our program since inception nationwide. Our programs are funded by our own Wildlife Heritage Society and our Guardians of the Legacy giving programs as well as by funds generated by hosting a number of revenue-producing events throughout the year. These funds are dedicated to providing funds for the Outdoor Adventures program and we also provide funds to qualified conservation programs through grants. We are excited about the future of our Outdoor Adventures program as well as our conservation efforts, but we felt that by changing our name and doing business as (dba) the Outdoors Tomorrow Foundation we would be better positioned to expand Outdoor Adventures to over 350 schools by the end of our fiscal year in June 2017 and to recruit and retain over 500 schools to the program by 2018. We are developing a brand that will serve the organization better as we expand and grow within the outdoor education and conservation industry in the future. We are recruiting, retaining and reactivating our hunting, angling, shooting sports and wildlife conservation heritage. Become a member of the Outdoors Tomorrow Foundation today. Support our mission and help us grow!

New rifle series from Todd Ramirez Todd Ramirez, premium rifle builder, is introducing the new Alchemist Warrior Rifle Series. Warriors of yesterday, bestowing the lessons of their era: precision, stealth, and wisdom, each of these values incarnated into the very fabrication of the alchemist series. Rifles crafted of the very elements themselves, such care and passion poured into the smallest details, and each infused with the likeness of the olden warriors. Avani Warrior of earth; wood and carbon, the embodiment of his love and strength for his lands, is realized in the Avani rifle: a sleek high-end wood rifle that is equipped with a carbon fiber barrel. Ember Warrior of fire; forged within the inner sparks of oblivion, by the ash and coal of an everlasting flame. The Ember is an allaround rifle that has options of a sporter or tactical stock and a stainless steel or carbon barrel. Zephyr Warrior of wind; wisdom and grace, the makings of a soul transcends into the long-range rifle with the option of a tactical stock or chassis. The Ember and Zephyr rifles can be designed with base paint colors or custom paint up to five colors. The Avani stock is

available in European or American classic style, using a Turkish walnut blank with an ebony forend tip. Alchemist Warrior Rifle Series is built and designed to the same quality as Todd Ramirez’s premium rifle line with the same craftsmanship at an affordable price. When designing these rifles, the goal was to make them unique, beautiful and accurate to 1/4 MOA.

Dedication in and outside the auction hall Rock Island Auction Company is proud to sponsor some of the top organizations fighting to preserve habitat and wildlife, as well as those organizations standing up for hunters and firearm owners. It is our privilege to again be a major sponsor of the Dallas Safari Club Convention. We consider supporting such organizations an integral part of a successful year, and 2016 is by far the most successful in our history. More collectors and investment buyers than ever are entrusting Rock Island Auction Company, and the result is a mixture that culminates in two of the 20th century’s finest firearms collections in the same building at the same time. The results? December sales of $15.6 million contributed to a staggering $63 million in sales in 2016, demolishing our own industry record set just last year, and leaving our nearest competitor more than $30 million behind us. Collectible firearms again have proven to be a strong form of alternative hard asset. We have achieved record prices in several areas, most notably a precious metal-laden hunting knife belonging to outdoorsman and President Theodore Roosevelt that brought $414,000, and the Winchester 1886 rifle, serial #1, that was presented to the man who accepted the surrender of Apache leader Geronimo, which realized a world-record $1.2 million. When it comes time to buy or sell your sporting or collector firearms, look no further than Rock Island Auction Company. We have the same passions you do and we put them to work every day to sell guns for more money than anyone else. Please visit our website for more information.

Living the outfitter’s dream By Craig Nyhus

Lone Star Outdoor News It’s many a hunter’s dream to live the outdoor lifestyle. After years in the oilfield business, Trevis Booker and his wife, Amber, were ready for a change. The change they made was big, as in 2012, they bought Wicked River Outfitters in northern British Columbia, Canada, where they conduct moose, stone sheep, mountain goat, elk and bear hunts. After buying Wicked River, Booker, who is called by his last name, got real busy. “We renovated the lodge,” he said. “We’re there about eight months each year.” When you see the view from the lodge, you’ll see why it’s hard to leave, as the lodge looks south at 60 miles of shoreline of Williston Lake. When you arrive as other hunters are leaving on “change-out day,” you’ll find Booker glued to the seat of his Piper Super Cub. He learned to fly five years ago and does all of the flying for his clients. While he is super cautious, he is confident he can do all the plane is designed to do. When asked if he could land on top of a mountain, he replied, “Yes, but I wouldn’t want to.”

Booker’s personality makes you feel like you are best friends within a few hours of knowing him. A true character, he shows class and care, although he can drink and curse with the best of them. Always smiling, laughing and talking with a thick Canadian accent, he turns shy when a camera is pointed his way. Hunts at Wicked River usually involve spending a good amount of time on one of the lodge’s 30 horses, covering a great deal of territory. Lone Star Outdoor News’ CEO David J. Sams booked a trip for his daughter, Lili, where she bagged a 54-inch bull moose while being guided by Booker. The pair flew 100 miles in the Super Cub, rode horses for 185 miles, all with the temperatures below freezing. “He took great care of Lili,” Sams said. Booker couldn’t run the operation without Amber. She handles the marketing and communication side of the business and cooks all the meals for the hunters. And it’s not freezedried food. She home cooks and labels the meals and freezes them for the excursion. What does the outfitter do in his spare time?

There’s good, There’s better, and then there’s Heads Above The Rest Over 32 years in the taxidermy business, Ron Schaefer has seen many taxidermists open and close their business. In order to have loyal customers, you have to be loyal and ethical to yourself first, as well to each of your customers and the industry as a whole. Ron Schaefer provides true art with his talent and accomplishments as a taxidermist, pencil sketch artist, bronze sculptor and sculpting wildlife forms for the taxidermy industry that have proven to be a league above others. His experience and dedication to low volume and high quality workmanship is a statement no other taxidermist can touch. Ron’s studio is not the high volume production hustle business. His standards are consistent to provide the highest quality craftsmanship on each animal that is brought to Heads Above The Rest. Ron’s experience in anatomy and attention to detail has separated his work from the others. Ron receives hunting/trophy shipments from all continents. Specializing in African, North American and exotic species, he can work with any size animal from life-size elephants to lifesize weasels. Ron’s greatest compliment is the numerous referrals he receives from loyal customers. Stop by the studio of Heads Above The Rest near Clifton, Texas to visit with Ron; you will be impressed by his knowledge, dedication and professionalism as a taxidermist.

Lili Sams, Lone Star Outdoor News

“We don’t have kids, just 30 horses and two dogs,” Booker said. “We do some snowmobiling and wolf trapping, but mostly we cut trails, cut firewood and build cabins. We spend two months hunting and 10 months getting ready for the next season.” Booker is happy to be headed south for the DSC convention, the Wild Sheep Show and other shows. “It’s minus 30 Celsius here,” he said. If you want to experience Booker for yourself, stop by and visit with him in Booth 345. If you bring him a whiskey drink, you will hear some amazing stories.

Droptine ranch DropTine Ranch is located 15 minutes from the premier tourist destination in Texas — the gorgeous Hill Country town of Fredericksburg. “You can hunt big deer and exotic wildlife anywhere these days. Why not do it in style at the 5-star rated DropTine Ranch?” asked Frank Fackovec, president of Texas Outfitters Ltd. at DropTine Ranch. The lodge offers a luxury hunting experience that includes dove, deer and exotics in a separate section of the ranch. Lodge amenities include a gym, pool table, loft, big-screen TVs, heated pool and Jacuzzi, indoor fireplace and outdoor patio fire pit. “Enjoy the peace and serenity of the ranch either pool or fire side, or just relax on one of the comfortable couches in the lodge,” Fackovec said. The facility boasts five cabins nestled around a half-acre pond stocked with bass and trout. Each cabin has a super king bed, fireplace, DirecTV and large Jacuzzi tub. “When not in the field hunting, your family and clients can enjoy custom wine tours, day spa packages, boutique shopping and top-shelf restaurants.

Additionally, there are two beautiful golf courses 20 minutes away and a private airport that can handle most private jets,” he added. DropTine is perfect for corporate retreats, weddings, staff meetings or just about any corporate or personal outing. Visit the website for more pictures and details.

Accuracy and precision with burris veracity The Burris Veracity riflescope series features time-proven Burris engineering that won’t fail when it’s to go time. This premium riflescope line is designed to help you capture predators, elusive elk or dangerous game thanks to its accuracy and precision. Its versatile 5x zoom system provides a larger field of view at close ranges and easier target acquisition at long ranges. Veracity riflescopes feature a front focal plane reticle design that allows the reticle size to increase or decrease as magnification is increased or decreased so the trajectory compensation is always correct for the selected power setting. Advanced windage and elevation adjustments are accurate and repeatable, plus they match the ballistic reticle’s MOA measurement system for precision aiming. For 2016, the Veracity series will now feature the brand-new Modular Adjustment Dial system (M.A.D. system), a multiple knob choice solution that lets you choose from exposed, multi-turn tactical knob, low-capped knobs, or custom knobs calibrated for your favorite cartridge. This system adds a new level of versatility to the Veracity lineup. The premium, crystal clear Veracity is at the very top of the Burris hunting line and, of course, it is backed by the Burris Forever Warranty.

The Veracity is available in 4 sizes: 2-10x42mm 3-15x50mm 4-20x50mm 5-25x50mm

don’t wait to protect your hearing Few audiologists understand the hearing issues that develop with hunters and shooters. Deborah Price with Hearing Professional Centers is the exception. “I’m pretty much the guru of audiologists in the hunting industry nationwide,” she said. “A few others dabble in it, but I have the most significant presence. It has to do with the fact that I am a hunter.” Price, an audiologist since 1978, is a Life Member of Dallas Safari Club and has been an exhibitor at the DSC convention each year since 1986. She has a piece of advice for those of us with hearing loss from shooting and hunting. “If you have hearing loss, seek help,” she said. “It’s the mannerisms and behavior of the person with hearing loss that makes them look old, not the hearing aid.” Most people associate hearing loss with repetitive shooting over the years, loud music or driving heavy or farm equipment, and, many of the older generation grew up during a time when hearing protection wasn’t given a thought. “It doesn’t have to be repetitive, especially if you already have hearing loss,” Price said. “I went to Africa in August, took one shot without my earplugs in and blew out half the hearing in my left ear. I was fatigued because I had just flown over there and forgot. And the shot was from a .270, not the loudest of guns.” Price offered a final warning. “If you go long enough without getting stimulation, it will affect you cognitively,” she said. In layman’s terms, if you aren’t hearing things, it will affect your brain and you’ll start losing acuity. “The longer you go without hearing aids when you need them, you’ll start losing stuff mentally and you don’t get that back,” Price said. The Hearing Professional Center booth will be in the same area as always and it has a new look this year. As always, there will be hearing testing onsite.

A destination without equal Perched atop a mesa just west of Fort Worth, Texas, Greystone Castle is a sight to behold. With four turrets peeking above the tree line, this majestic sight is one to be remembered. From its award-winning wingshooting program, to trophy whitetail and exotics, worldclass bass fishing, and our National Champion Sporting Clays Instructor, there is something for everyone at Greystone Castle. This year, visitors will notice several additions that enhance the experience. Two sporting clays courses over changing terrain, two 5-stand stations, a rifle range with covered awning and an archery range from elevated platforms highlight the changes. The Gold Medal whitetail deer program offers an all-inclusive package based on the opportunity to hunt the opening weekend of the season without being restricted by score. It is an exclusive chance to hunt for the whitetail of your dreams. Last year’s results include a giant 301-inch deer taken by rifle. This year Greystone is looking forward to topping last year’s average of 250 inches. As the Orvis 2015 Wingshooting Lodge of the Year, Greystone has mastered the art of bird hunting. The popular mixed bag hunt includes quail, pheasant,

52 |

chukkar and Hungarian partridge. This upland walking hunt allows guests to experience great pointing dogs working over rolling terrain specially farmed for optimal bird habitat. The European pheasant hunt is a great way to get lots of shooting action and the mallard hunts offer a great chance to hone your skills over water. If you are looking for something different, you will find it in the exotic pasture full of animals from around the world. Breeding herds of axis deer, aoudad, blackbuck antelope, sika and fallow deer mean there are plenty of trophies to be taken For those looking to relax and enjoy the water, Greystone offers more than 120 acres of stocked bass lakes. From small private lakes to the 80-acre Thurber Lake, every type of fishing opportunity exists. Kayaks and paddleboards let you go off on your own adventure or pontoon boats sneak you to the honey holes. What appeals to all visitors to Greystone are its top-of-the-line accommodations and gourmet meals. Guests enjoy 26 private rooms, gourmet dining from our executive chef, conference facilities, and a swimming pool with hot tub. Along with this is the newly constructed 2,600 square

foot pavilion facility with custom bar, large seating areas, 65-inch TVs, carved limestone fireplace, Laser Shot, billiards and an overlook terrace with a custom outdoor fire pit. The ownership and staff are dedicated to creating one of the finest sporting experiences found anywhere in the world.

Texas Dove Hunters Association launched its first magazine in August of 2015. This biannual publication has been very popular with the dove hunters and is another way TDHA works to bring dove hunters and the dove-hunting industry together. Most of the articles are timeless, so if you happen to find an old copy you should find the articles interesting and informative. There’s something for every dovehunting enthusiast in this magazine, whether new or a veteran hunter. For those looking for a day lease, there is a great article about questions to ask the owner before deciding where to hunt. There also was a very informative story on not overthinking your shots, as well as one on preparing and practicing for dove season with skeet, trap and sporting clays. For people with bird dogs, dog training and caring for them in the off-season was covered. The most recent issue featured Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who is an avid hunter. In this article, he shared that he even took a day off during his campaign to go dove hunting. It is encouraging that we have a governor who promotes hunting as a family sport just as TDHA does. One of the most popular features of Texas Dove Hunters Magazine is the center spread that lists outfitters around the state. It’s an excellent resource for hunters in and coming to Texas. The goal of the magazine is to connect, inform and educate as well as showcase new products for the dove field.

Season dates are listed as well as other information from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department from game warden etiquette to drawn hunts. The Legislation section covers current gun/ hunting related issues. There is also information on the association: scholarship recipients, Dove 101 classes, snake avoidance trainings, the TDHA Habitat Improvement program, dove sweepstakes and chapter news from around the state. Our members look forward to seeing their hunting photos in the Photos in the Field and Families in the Field sections. Many of the feature stories can also be found on texasdovehuntersmagazine. com. Texas Dove Hunters magazines are distributed throughout the state at various hunting supply stores. But, the best way to assure that you receive your two magazines per year in your mailbox in March and August is to join Texas Dove Hunters Association at texasdovehunters.com.

guardians, ONe and all With Christmas upon us, I’m once again reminded of my military days. One might question that I didn’t mention the reason for the season; the truth is I celebrate that every day while I often go weeks without looking back on my Marine Corps career and smiling. The dose of reality veterans embrace through and through is that the commitment is the same regardless of your uniform — to the death, if necessary. Whether this season has put you on your knees in front of the buck of your lifetime or in prayer, hoping today is the day, the takeaway is freedom. You have the freedom to enjoy our outdoor heritage and millions of treasured acres as your playground. That right to witness the dawn of a new day from a treestand or ground blind has been established for you. Whether considering this fall hunting season or our nation’s current state, the one constant is that the

sun will rise again; darkness lifted, we celebrate success or embrace do-overs on our own terms. This Christmas I am exceedingly grateful for our pursuit of happiness and those who choose to protect it. Merry Christmas to my brothers and sisters-in-arms, one and all; I offer thanks from the core of my being and wish God’s blessings throughout the hunting and holiday seasons. Hunt hard, hunt often and give credit where it’s due. —Kevin Reese

Realize the dream of a walk-in cooler Deer hunters who visit a ranch with a walk-in cooler are immediately envious. With coolers of any size from KT Coolers in Yoakum, the dream can come true. “The deer seasons have been getting warmer and warmer,” said KT Coolers owner Shannon Skipper. “There is more need for a cooler.” It’s not just the convenience of having a cold place to store your deer or venison while continuing the hunt; it’s also the safety. “The coolers are the same as in any fancy restaurant you will find,” Skipper said. “All of the boxes adhere to National Energy Code as well as the Health Department codes of all of the states in the U.S.” The self-contained refrigeration system coolers from KT Coolers can be customized to any size you may need. They even have trailer-mounted coolers for better mobility. “We provide any size, from large walk-in coolers to

Standard features: • • • • • • • •

whatever the customer specifies,” Skipper said. “We can do very small coolers.” The best sellers are still the 6x6 coolers, with increasing orders coming for the 6x8 and 8x8 models. It’s the accessories, though, that have increased in popularity the most. “Our rail system, providing for easy and convenient movement of the animal from the skinning rack to the cooler, used to be in about 10 percent of our coolers,” Skipper said. “Now, it’s more like 50 percent — you can drive the vehicle in, winch the animal up, clean it and move it straight into the cooler.” All of KT Coolers products have energy-efficient motors and self-closing hinges. The insulation value exceeded government requirements of an R29 insulating value well before the requirements were established in 2007. “Ours are R32,” Skipper said.

BIG EXPO IN THE VALLEY IN MAY There is a new hunting and fishing show coming to Texas, and show organizer Xavier Rodriguez says it is in the perfect spot — Texas’ Rio Grande Valley. The Lone Star Hunting & Fishing Expo will take place May 5-7 at the beautiful McAllen Convention Center, and Rodriguez is pulling out all the stops to see that the show is a success. “We hit both the Texas and Mexico markets, and during the weekend of Cinco de Mayo, The Valley will be full of people. It’s a 3-day holiday in Mexico,” he said. “There usually isn’t a hotel room to be had that weekend.” Rodriguez said the show is already 75 percent full, with more than 250 exhibitors. He plans for a big media push to bring in the people. “And we’re bringing in Pigman and Just Junie for hunting celebrities,” he said. Why start an expo himself? “I’ve always been an outdoor person,” Rodriguez said. “While I was working in another field, hunting and fishing was still my life. Now, I’m dedicating myself to the expo here in the Valley. I want to show the people of the Valley that there are other things out there.” The show will cost $12 for attendees, with kids under 12 free. Additional exhibitors are welcome.

GEORGIA

Snow

By David J. Sams

Lone Star Outdoor News It’s a rare event for Mother Nature to let snow fall in southern Georgia, but it happens frequently at Pine Hill Plantation. During a February hunt, a covey rise of 23 birds blew out of the native wiregrass and flew hard to the cover of the longleaf pines. During the flight, two of them hit the ground, but many of their white feathers remained suspended in the air in a tight bunch. “That’s Georgia snow,” Pine Hill Plantation owner Doug Coe said as he reloaded his side-by-side with a smile. The plantation hunting experience is vintage Georgia quail hunting at its finest. Covey rise after covey rise. Point after point. The dogs remained steady and held strong. Torn jackets and worn chaps showed the hunt is no cakewalk. We kept finding coveys, we kept shooting. Birds kept falling. It kept snowing. We saddled back up on the Tennessee walking horses and eased on to the next section. The mules and wagon followed. The dogs were on point when we arrived. “Doug, this is amazing,” I said after seeing another covey bust out. “How could this be so good?” “We have a lot of secrets that start out with the early release of young birds and great genetics,” Doug replied. “Our birds adapt with the wild populations. We work hard on our habitat and we only shoot the covey rise.” We broke for a field lunch with white tablecloths and good fixins, including collard greens that I was forced to eat, and topped it off with sweet tea. The cool air kept us from napping, so we got right back on the points, flushes and retrieves. There was no afternoon slump. The squeak of the saddles and smell of horse sweat did try to stir drowsiness, but then there was another point and we were at full attention and the small bores fired again. A young dog was put out for duty. His enthusiasm flushed a covey of 30, which flushed another covey of 30, and the group of 60 birds brought yet another covey up with them. “You have quite a few birds here,” I said to Doug with a smile. The dogs never tired, but the sun was casting longer shadows, so we toasted with ice cold Cokes in vintage short glass bottles and talked about the day. The team headed back with the horses in the front, mules and wagon in the rear and Herman, the wagon driver, humming his melody that keeps the mules happy. Back at the lodge, the attention to detail is paramount. Your private staff pay you the right amount of attention as you sit by the fireplace and reminisce about the 20 covey rises of the day. At the Pine Hill Plantation — everything was perfect.

Never be cold again with KarbonExtreme Today, the plethora of petroleum derivative microfibers that all begin with “poly” or “lycra” are found everywhere. Year after year, a new generation of hunters buy the latest polyester color with the same, freezing results. For almost any conditions, the ability of wool to absorb vapor and store heat is magical. KarbonExtreme takes it a step further by forcing vapor into the wool fiber. This condition, known as “phase change,” produces an additional one to two degrees of caloric heat naturally. But, forcing it into the fabric adds almost 8-12 times that heat. KarbonExtreme makes the wool “glow” and store heat. You’re 98.6 degrees while reading this, and if you get up and do some physical activity you’ll perspire at 102. With all that heat, why are you ever cold? It’s due to the moisture evaporating off of the surface of your skin. KarbonExtreme developer Mark Petersen’s work has been to develop a fabric that stores radiant heat in a never-ending cycle with its patent-pending technology. More importantly for hunters, wool is silent and a natural scent suppressant. KarbonExtreme takes it a step further with carbon-wrapped Kevlar yarn as a separate yarn in the weave, making it more of a scent suppressant than charcoal that never needs recharging. What do you want to wear?

The ultimate feeder from Priefert Wildlife Equipment Priefert is one of the largest farm, ranch, and rodeo equipment manufacturers in the world. For more than 50 years, this family owned and operated business has been recognized as the leading innovator in the livestock handling industry. Now, Priefert is proud to combine its expertise in manufacturing and its experience with animal flow and animal safety to produce top-quality wildlife equipment, including wildlife feeders and wildlife panels. Priefert’s Automated Wildlife Feeder is the “Ultimate Wildlife Management” tool for feeding protein, corn or textured feed. This feeder holds 1,000 pounds of protein or 1,250 pounds of corn. The programmable timer allows you set your feeder to open and close up to three different times a day, making it easy to close the feeder at night to prevent the feeding of nocturnal species. Better yet, this feeder saves you money. A rain sensor signals the trough to close when it starts to rain. Once the rain has passed, the feeder returns to its regular feeding schedule, meaning that if the rain stops during a time that you want the feeder to be open, the sensor will signal the trough to reopen after the rain. This wildlife feeder can be used with Priefert Wildlife Panels, which are designed to help control nondesirable animals, preventing them from using feed stations. These durable mesh-filled panels help control access to the feeding station by

only allowing your target species to enter, helping control expensive feed costs. In addition to creating wildlife equipment, President Eddie Priefert is very passionate about wildlife management on the Priefert Ranch. Each week, Eddie shares his experiences with wildlife management in a blog called “From The Blind” on the Priefert Wildlife website. Some of the blogs have video and others include links to sources that he has found helpful in research. Eddie covers topics like planting food plots, selecting the right type of feed, how to choose which deer should be taken from the herd and other topics. From feeders to panels, Priefert Wildlife Equipment is durable, reliable, and animal safe.

training at Landmark Retrievers By Craig Nyhus

Lone Star Outdoor News Dakota, the Lone Star Outdoor News’ newsroom dog, spent some time away from home and the office for a few months. He was at Landmark Retrievers in Ennis for gun dog training. He wasn’t the only one getting trained. Established by Roger Conant, more than 3,300 retrievers have made their way to Landmark Retrievers, and their owners right along with them. The basic obedience and gun dog training are customized and are based on the retriever’s natural skill, ability and intelligence to maximize the retriever’s success. The training techniques used on land and water are suited to the dog’s personality and temperament. This basic philosophy is set forth in Conant’s book, “Train the Trainer,” and 8-week training video, “Training through the Eyes of the Retriever.” Each dog owner is strongly encouraged to spend an hour or more each week with the trainer and retriever, learning the proper obedience and handling techniques, the do’s and don’ts in handling, and working with their dog each step of the way. Conant and fellow trainer Jeff Schultz work with both the dog and the owner to establish true hunting companions. Dakota’s primary trainer was Schultz, who quickly became one of Dakota’s favorite

people, making the training sessions a favorite activity instead of a chore. Landmark Retrievers became familiar to many in the retriever world when a dog purchased at a Ducks Unlimited auction was given to Conant by a close friend. The dog, named Peg, was photographed nestled in Conant’s jacket on a cold and wet, winter day. That image became the most published photo in retriever sporting history and was featured in magazines, on posters and retail gift products. Testimonials include one provided by professional golfer Justin Leonard. “Our lab Sunday is the most wellmannered dog I know. Thanks to Landmark Retrievers, Sunday is not only a great bird dog, but more importantly, best friend to our two little girls. We could not have asked for a better experience!” Landmark’s immaculate facility includes boarding opportunities as well, and for no extra charge, Schultz will give a refresher to your dog each day while he or she is there. Dakota is now out of school, but will be back when boarding is needed. In the meantime, he’ll be retrieving his first ducks and dove.

the basics in rifle making Lex Webernick, custom rifle builder of Rifles, Inc., has seen a lot of fads come and go over his almost 30 years of building custom rifles. “I believe in basics and improvements of components that will improve the performance of a rifle,” he said. “By basics I mean: stock design, matching barrel contour and length to rifle, and, of course, caliber.” For hunting rifles – Webernick believes a well-designed stock, accurately balanced rifle with a caliber that you can either handload or use premium ammunition is going to net successful hunts. “I also believe in matching the optics to the rifle performance and hunting application,” he said. “Accurate rifles are the result of paying attention to rifle balance, quality of the barrel and chambering, fitting of the stock — both interior and exterior, optics and ammunition.” New components do excite the veteran rifle maker. “Where I get excited about innovation is improving the basics,” Webernick said. “My lightweight stock looks about the same as it did 25 years ago, but I’ve continued to change the materials and lamination schedules – which is a fancy way of saying the way the different cloths and weights of either Kevlar, Carbon and fiberglass are layered.” Webernick’s lightweight stock out of the mold now weighs 11 ounces. Once it’s bedded and finished and a recoil pad and sling swivel studs are added, the complete stock will weigh approximately 15-17 ounces. Another basic that he likes to improve on is accuracy — his lightweight 5-pound rifle will usually shoot premium factory ammunition 1/2-3/4 MOA. “I also build heavier rifles that are

Official Day Program

guaranteed to shoot 1/2,” Webernick said. “I get these results from close attention to details such as stock bedding, chambering and barrel break-in. I shoot each rifle for accuracy.” “Once I’ve finished breaking-in the barrel and have shot the rifle for accuracy, I send the customer a Ballistic Sheet that details the ammunition, chronograph information and trajectory,” he said. “Optics can then be matched to the actual rifle shooting specific ammunition.” Rifles’, Inc. builds six different models — from the extremes of 5-pound lightweight hunting to 10-pound long-range. There really isn’t a one-size-fits-all. “To achieve a goal, you’ve got to know what the goal is: sheep hunting, general type of hunting, target or competition shooting,” Webernick said. “Success for me is building a rifle that my customer is confident in and well suited for his hunting goals.” “My goal is to build you ‘your’ perfect hunting rifle.”

100th anniversary of Delaware Mountain Ranch 1916-2016 The Calhoun, McWhorter and Pelt families are proud to announce a historic milestone, as their ownership of the Delaware Mountain Ranch has hit the century mark. In the early part of the last century, Samuel Taylor Calhoun surveyed this property at the age of 22 and started building a three-strand barbed wire fence to cut it out of what was then known as “open range.” The cedar posts were hauled by rail from Junction to a railhead in Culbertson County, and then toted to the ranch via Sam’s 1.5-ton REO Speed Wagon truck. The venture took more than five years. It was the very first fence built in the northern part of that county, much to the chagrin of some ranchers who had been enjoying the bountiful amount of free grass found there. Much of the labor was provided by men who had no jobs during the Great Depression, and most of the original posts and wire still stand today. Sam also built several large earthen tanks using a Fresno dirt scraper powered by two mules. Several attempts to find well water failed and proved to make the place unfit as a standalone cattle ranch. In time this curse became a blessing. Six generations of family, friends and guests have hunted and enjoyed the sights and wildlife bounty that these pristine hills so amply provide. For this purpose, Delaware Mountain Ranch has proven to

be second to none. The ranch has won and placed in many awards and big buck contests. In 1992, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and the Texas Wildlife Association presented Delaware Mountain Ranch its first ever Region 1 award for land management. Texas’ #1 and #7 mule deer were harvested on this ranch that year. Delaware Mountain Ranch now accepts a small number of paid guests each year to experience a unique hunting experience on a century-old ranch.

At Wildcat Creek, it’s a quail and pheasant hunting adventure Quail and pheasant hunters need not travel far to experience a memorable hunt, luxurious facilities and fabulous food. Wildcat Creek Quail Hunting Resort has birds at the ready — where a memorable quail or pheasant hunting adventure awaits. For wingshooters who favor the pheasant, full pheasant hunts are being offered this year. WCR, a family affair and the vision of Ron and Evonne Parker and their sons, sports a new lodge and an atmosphere that is truly family-oriented. “We want the experience to be first-class but yet not stuffy,” said owner Ron Parker. Located in Red River County near Detroit, the property consists of 1,200plus acres of well-managed land that will take hunters back in time. The habitat, birds and dogs are firstrate, with fields cleared out of the thick woods by Parker, who also owns a construction business. “And we have cleared saplings in several areas to offer hunters a true Georgia-style quail hunt with tough shots through the trees,” Ron said. “Our customers love it.” Wingshooters may want to get their hunts booked, though, as the word is getting out about Wildcat Creek, where 10 weekends are already fully booked for the upcoming season. Several flight pens allow for flight

training for the pen-raised birds, and the birds are released before the beginning of the season. “We want the birds to be as wild as possible and explode out of the grass,” Ron said. After the hunt, the new lodge and the food served at WCR may be even more memorable. WCR also has added competition-style sporting clay stations for parties and corporate events.

How to rebuild your deer population with monster Texas whitetails

In the Texas Hill Country near Marble Falls sits an oasis of perfect deer habitat for growing some of the largest typical deer found in Texas. Here you’ll find a herd unlike many others. One that prides itself on the quality of its whitetails and delivers true, Texas monster whitetails to happy landowners across Texas. That herd is Stockerbuck and it’s owned by avid deer breeder, Jay Reichert. First a history lesson: Think about it? Over the last 50 years, we hunters continue to hunt and shoot the best of the best bucks we can find. The result is over time this depletes the toplevel genetics in the wild. “I got tired of seeing these little bitty basket Hill Country deer and started wondering what happened to the genetics in Texas,” Reichert said. His purpose became to replace and put those top-tier genetics back into the deer population. Their Secret Weapon? A strict, Texas lineage in their breeding program. Not only does it deliver the authenticity that Texas landowners want, it’s also beneficial for the long-term success of their herd. Texas-derived genetics means that Stockerbuck’s deer are built for our state’s hot climate. It also means that these deer can survive off nature’s bounty in the Lone Star State. Without any special feed.

This dramatically increases the herd’s survivability statistics. For anyone who is serious about rebuilding their deer population, there is nothing worse when your investment dies once it’s released. Over the past nine years, Reichert has worked to make sure Stockerbuck has the highest levels of Texas Animal Health Commissions CWD certifications and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s highest tier of TC1 and “movement qualified” classification. The result is that Stockerbuck is one of a handful of Texas herds to earn the top levels of certifications for CWD within the deer breeding industry. What does that mean for Texas landowners? Three Words: Piece of Mind. Landowners can rest assured that these deer are the most accredited and safest deer you can purchase for your ranch. This year, Reichert has introduces a new program into Stockerbuck’s breeding portfolio. His Build-A-Doe program is a fun way for a ranch owner to pick the sire and dam to produce the offspring they desire. Through the program one can select the bloodlines, genetic traits, and even the sex of the offspring. If you would like to see more “monster” Texas whitetails on your ranch, go with Stockerbuck.

Buying or selling a ranch? Think Ranch Investments Since 1982, Ranch Investments has emerged as one of the leading ranch brokerage firms in the state of Texas. Historic sales of 1.4 million acres totaling nearly $1 billion in value have established our prominent place in the market. Initially based in Austin, the primary marketing efforts were focused in the six counties surrounding Austin and the South Texas Brush Country. During the past 10 years, brokers and agent representatives have been added in 12 locations, allowing us to better serve the entire state of Texas. The founder, Kenneth O’Meara, developed a concept that brought together a team of associates with varied backgrounds in farming, ranching and land ownership. Our associates have extensive knowledge in wildlife management and commercial hunting, oil and gas production, row crop and irrigated farming, equine centers, cow, calf and feeder operations as well as real estate development. This enables us to best serve buyers and sellers with their transactions in the most efficient and professional manner. In 2008, John Ed Stepan took over the helm at Ranch Investments and manages the daily operations of the firm. Along with his expert staff, he coordinates print media and Internet marketing, works alongside his team of associates to assist them in any way and works directly with clients. As a Life Member of the Dallas Safari Club, John Ed has supported numerous wildlife conservation efforts over the years. His background is varied and unique including international hunting consultant, game ranch development, commercial hunting operations, rural land development, commercial real estate and mineral production. Adhering to its roots, Ranch Investments is actively engaged in the marketing and acquisition of working

farms and ranches. And since 2008, a new set of benefits has become available to our customers. With our network of accountants, attorneys, qualified intermediaries (for 1031 Exchanges) and real estate brokers, we have the team of professionals to assist you in the sale of your property and the reinvestment of the proceeds. Many times we encounter sellers who own property of significant value that has been in the family many years, resulting in a low cost basis, and the tax implications can be significant. We work to develop a strategy such as utilizing the 1031 Exchange to reinvest the proceeds tax deferred into income producing properties. On the opposite end of the spectrum is the firsttime landowner, whether someone seeking a weekend getaway or a working land investment. We carefully listen to our clients’ objectives, develop a plan and locate the ideal property. After the purchase, we offer a full range of consulting services in ranch development for maximum enjoyment and utilization. Our expert team will assist you in taking an undeveloped piece of property and building lakes, roads, game fences, barns, houses, lodges and runways. Utilizing our network of wildlife biologists, we will develop a plan for the propagation of native and exotic game, migratory and upland game birds. For more than 34 years, Ranch Investments has been trusted by families, foundations, corporations and trusts to represent them in their rural real estate transactions. Our reputation is based on honesty and integrity, so you may rest assured that Ranch Investments will always be by your side.

EXPERTS IN EXOTIC NUTRITION. The biggest problem we see when supplementing exotic breeds along with whitetail, is overconsumption. We now have a solution for this with our Controlled Intake Technology. Now you can supplement, getting those important trace minerals and other micro ingredients that are missing in native forages, without getting eaten out of house and home! Controlled Intake Technology additive can be utilized in our exotic rations to eliminate exotics from bunking up on feed and to better utilize native forage or hay. Allow your feeders to stay filled twice as long by limiting consumption of the feed by exotics and still get intake of the ration with whitetail to supplement their native habitat.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS: • Save Money

Effectively maximize genetics of exotic wildlife as cost efficiently as possible!

Get help with your lake management The lake on your property is like a separate ranch, at least when it comes to growing big bass and managing your fish populations. Your lake is like a pasture with a fence, said John Jones, president at Lochow Ranch Pond & Lake Management. “The cows will eat all of the grass if there are too many cows,” he said. “The same thing works in a lake — people just can’t see it.” Private lakes are beautiful and fun, and the fishing can be stellar. However, they can also be frustrating. Lochow Ranch Pond & Lake Management, based in Bryan, Texas, will remove the frustration, leaving only enjoyment. Last year, lake owners had issues when lakes refilled after a long drought. This year, the issue has been morethan-ample vegetation. “On some lakes, the vegetation got so thick the predator fish couldn’t access the bait,” Jones said. “We dealt with that a lot. On the other hand, we had very successful bass recruitment due to the vegetation.” High recruitment of bass fry means big numbers of small fish. “The first step in lake management is you need to take care of your harvest,” Jones said. “A fraction of a percent of the people actually do this. On a real productive lake, it can be up to 100 fish per acre that need to be removed and you have to do it each year.” The Lochow Ranch biologists and their fleet of trucks and boats are there to help. “It’s a never-ending job, just like harvesting deer on a high-fenced ranch,” Jones said. “Lake owners are typically busy people and can’t devote the

88 |

time to harvesting small bass. We do a lot through electrofishing.” Even with electrofishing, Jones said removing enough small bass isn’t easy. “On our retainer program, we often have to do it four times per year on many lakes,” he said. “But if you don’t harvest, you’ll end up with more, smaller fish.” Lochow Ranch manages more than 6,000 lakes in Texas and surrounding states, and has a monthly retainer program where their biologists will check your lakes and recommend how to address any issues, whether it involves management of fish populations, weed control, water treatment or aeration. Thinking of building a new lake? Lochow Ranch will work with you to design and build it, taking your personal preferences into mind and creating your favorite spot on the ranch, including the installation of a floating dock to your specifications. “We work with landowners to choose goals and timetables and stick with it,” Jones said. “It’s not instant gratification, especially when you’re trying to grow big bass.”

NEW NIKON RIFLESCOPES WITH BDC DISTANCE LOCK TECHNOLOGY Nikon Sport Optics released six new riflescopes with a BDC Distance Lock function located in the first focal plane, which allows the riflescope to maintain its scale and distance proportion on a target throughout the entire zoom range. The greatest benefit of these new BDC Distance Lock-equipped riflescopes will be for those who use Nikon’s Spot On Ballistic Program and BDC reticles to compensate for bullet drop at extended ranges. The Spot On program allows shooters to input their shooting conditions and ballistic information in order to find the exact point of aim on Nikon’s BDC reticles (with unique circles and hash marks) for whatever distance they are shooting. Up until now, all of Nikon’s riflescopes have been in the second focal plane, which means that as shooters zoom from the lowest magnification to the highest, the reticle appears the same size in your field-of-view but is changing size in relation to your target. With the new BDC Distance Lock function that keeps everything in the first focal plane, the aiming points provided by the Spot On application will be the same, regardless of what magnification the riflescope is set. This is made possible because with a first focal plane riflescope, the reticle stays the same size in relation to your target. The MONARCH 3 and PROSTAFF 5 BDC Distance Lock riflescopes all feature Nikon’s Fully Multilayer Coated lenses that deliver superior light transmission for bright, clear images with balanced color. The elevation and windage adjustments are made in

clickable increments of 1/4-inch at 100 yards. The turrets all have a Spring-Loaded Instant Zero-Reset feature that enables users to lift the turret and return to the “zero” mark after sighting in. These riflescopes also have a side-focus MONARCH 3 3-12x42 SF FFP Matte BDC -- $549.95 knob for parallax adjustment. The sideMONARCH 3 4-16x42 SF FFP Matte BDC -- $579.95 focus knob has distances inscribed on it, making it easy to quickly focus the scope MONARCH 3 4-16x50 SF FFP Matte BDC -- $629.95 from a particular vantage point. PROSTAFF 5 3.5-14x40 SF FFP Matte BDC -- $359.95 Like all Nikon riflescopes, the PROSTAFF 5 3.5-14x50 SF FFP Matte BDC -- $459.95 MONARCH 3 and PROSTAFF 5 BDC Distance Lock riflescopes are optimized PROSTAFF 5 4.5-18x40 SF FFP Matte BDC -- $459.95 for use with Spot On Ballistic Match Technology. The Spot On program provides users with exact aiming points on the BDC reticle for any load or ammunition at a specified range. Spot On is free online at NikonSportOptics.com/SpotOn and is now free for mobile devices. The MONARCH 3 and PROSTAFF 5 riflescopes are waterproof, fogproof and shockproof for exceptional performance under diverse conditions. They are backed by Nikon’s Limited Lifetime Warranty and Nikon’s No-Fault Repair/Replacement Policy for Binoculars, Riflescopes and Fieldscopes.
