LEGACY

DSC Convention and Sporting Expo On Jan. 4, one of the world’s fastest growing outdoor conventions and expos, the 2018 DSC Convention, opens in Dallas. Held in the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center and Omni Hotel Dallas in Downtown Dallas, the show theme this year is Legacy. Show dates are Jan. 4-7, 2018, and the hours are Thursday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The DSC convention and expo is one of the biggest fundraising events in Texas. Over the past six years, the event has generated more than $6.7 million for conservation, education and hunter advocacy initiatives around the world. In 2016 alone, DSC raised more than $1.4 million for conservation causes worldwide, plus another $1 million specifically for youth education. Lone Star Outdoor News’ executive editor Craig Nyhus also serves as the DSC president this year. “We have spent countless hours over the past year in preparation for a great convention,” he said. “The DSC staff and the legion of volunteers are ready to help all of the exhibitors, attendees and dignitaries enjoy their experience. We hope each of you can make it.”

The family-friendly 2018 DSC expo is open to the public and will fill a record 800,000 square feet with 1,000 exhibitors and 1,800 booths featuring outfitted hunts, guns, gear and much more. The Zeiss Stage will host outdoor celebrities telling tales from hunt camp, and law enforcement officers who are the boots on the ground in Operation Game Thief. SITKA AND DOWNS By Larry Weishuhn

For Lone Star Outdoor News “It’s going to be a bumpy ride back to the Sikumi. We’ll be going into the wind and the incoming tide,” announced Keegan McCarthy as I stepped into his skiff. “Good thing it’s dark, so we won’t be able to see what we’re getting into.” I was anxious to tell Keegan about the 12 Sitka blacktail bucks I had seen that afternoon, but it would have to wait until we were safely back in the dry, warm and well-appointed “mother ship.” I asked Keegan if it was permissible to stand toward the back of the skiff, knowing from previous experience, my knees took the hard-slamming ups and downs caused by waves better than my seated spine. There too, I could perhaps avoid some of the inevitable saltwater spray coming over the sides of the boat. The ride home was interesting to say the least. I had experienced rougher water, but at the moment I could not remember when! I appreciated my Drake Waterfowl rain gear on our way home and Keegan’s boat-handling ability. That night aboard the Sikumi, over a fabulous meal of freshly caught Dungeness crab, I had a chance to reflect upon my Sitka blacktail deer hunt with Keegan McCarthy’s Coastal Alaska Adventures. I had previously hunted both black bear and Sitka blacktail deer with Keegan. Both those hunts were successful including my taking a near 8-foot squared black bear a couple of springs earlier. I love hunting deer in the land of the highest concentration of Alaskan brown bear in the world. Thankfully, most all the big bears are in hibernation by the time I have hunted Sitka blacktail deer. Even so, we had seen several fresh brown bear tracks in the snow. “There are some coves on the far end of our hunting area I’d like to try, but it will be a long skiff ride. Are you interested?” Keegan asked over our predawn breakfast. I was nodding “Yes,” before he finished. “We should see a bunch of humpback and some killer whales as well,” Keegan said. “We shot our best buck there last year and the year before.” We indeed did see whales, almost too up close and personal, both humpbacks and a pod of killer whales. A bit later, Keegan maneuvered the skiff toward the shore where we had spotted a couple of good bucks. Snow was falling as I stepped onto the rocks and stalked forward. When I cut the distance to less than 100 yards, up came my Ruger M77 .300 Win Mag loaded with Hornady’s Precision Hunter. At the shot, the deer was down. The ride back to the mother ship would be windy and cold, but a joyful one!

TURN ORDINARY HUNT EPIC WITH BX-5 SANTIAM BINOCULARS

Most of us don’t get to hunt as much as we’d like. Even more rare are those epic hunts; the ones you spend years thinking about and months planning. You analyze every detail down to what shoelaces to wear. And yes, upgrading to the 550 cord makes perfect sense. You lay out your kit and triple-check everything for a week straight. No detail is left to chance. Then the moment arrives. The dew is heavy. Red and yellow leaves fill the landscape. The topo lines from a well-studied map finally become the mountainside under your boots. Your epic moment is at your fingertips. This is when a lifetime guarantee becomes more than a marketing ploy — when you’re miles from nowhere and just minutes away from needing to make the shot of a lifetime. This is when fogging inside your scope is unacceptable; when there’s no store around to replace a loose reticle; when you don’t have time to exchange a scope that couldn’t hold up to the altitude changes from the plane ride. When your epic moment is staring you in the face, no detail should be left to chance. That’s why we do what we do. That’s why we make sure that every product we put on the market is proven in the toughest conditions. The BX-5 Santiam HD 15x56mm binoculars are purpose-built for picking out distant game. Perfect on a window mount or tripod, with the Santiam’s in your pack, you might be able to leave that spotting scope at home. The huge, forgiving eyebox is made for long glassing sessions. Extra-low dispersion (HD) lenses and the Twilight Max Light Management System combine to give you a crisp image, vibrant color, and optimal contrast in harsh or poor light. Guard-ion hydrophobic lens coatings shed dirt, water and even fingerprints. With Abbe-Koenig prisms ramping up light transmission, they also redefine low-light performance, clarity, and resolution at extreme long range. Includes GO Afield shoulder strap and binocular case, lens covers, and lens cloth. Backed by the Leupold Full Lifetime Guarantee. At the end of the day, warranties are easy to promise, but the wilderness doesn’t care about marketing taglines. While some companies offer a lifetime of replacements, Leupold offers a lifetime of relentless performance. If your binoculars say Leupold on them, they won’t let you down, even in the toughest conditions. We are 700 American craftsmen putting in the work every single day. You won’t outlast us. You won’t outperform us. We are Leupold. We’re American to the core.

Acute Angling Operates 3 Turn-key Amazon Fishing Adventures Fishing in the Amazon is a complicated endeavor. Remote fisheries, convoluted supply chains and the necessity of meeting angler needs for comfort, security and fishing success require the flawless function of a well-oiled fishing machine. There’s no room for failed communication, improper logistics or fishing mechanisms that are inappropriate for the fishery. Amazon fishing demands the level of total operational control that only a vertically integrated organization can deliver. To meet these demands and to maintain this level of control, Acute Angling is the sole owner, operator, outfitter and organizer of its Amazon trips. There are no middlemen, marketers or layers of fluff between an angler and their trip. This single layer of organization allows anglers to be secure in knowing that they have contracted with the sole entity responsible for delivering their fishing trip of a lifetime.. Meeting each anglers expectations is also a complicated endeavor. Some fishermen want constant action, some seek trophy size and others prefer species variety. In order to satisfy these widely differing preferences, Acute Angling operates three distinct trip types. Each is designed to allow anglers to experience a different type of Amazon fishing, thus each uses the logistical tools necessary to access a different, remote region while providing air-conditioned comfort, private bathrooms and gourmet meals. The Blackwater Explorer yacht provides consistent fishing productivity. Living on a secure, air-conditioned mother ship while fishing the wild Amazon in nimble bass-boats offers the best of both worlds. The elegant 9 year old yacht boasts both

incredible mobility and relaxed comfort. Water levels and fishing conditions can often change on a weekly basis in the Amazon. The Blackwater Explorer keeps its anglers in the most productive water despite changing conditions. Yacht trips are operated only during seasons or in locations that provide unlimited access to the most productive and remote Amazon waters. Floating Bungalow Camps provide access to trophy peacock bass in remote Amazon headwaters. They are designed to pass through shallow waters and other navigational obstacles to get to places that nothing else can reach. Composed of selfcontained, moveable, cabins, they can achieve access to some of the most inaccessible fisheries in the Amazon with the mobility and flexibility necessary to accommodate changing conditions. Specially designed fishing boats let anglers fish the hidden lagoons where trophy peacocks often lurk. These trips are focused on selected, big-fish rivers and specialty locations. Picapau Lodge provides Multi-species variety. In the fast-moving waters of the Amazon’s mountainous shield region, anglers can fish for saber-toothed payara, fierce giant wolfish, fastwater peacock bass, acrobatic bicuda, agile sorubim, burly redtails, enormous 300+ lb. giant piraiba catfish and more. This brand-new rustic jungle lodge provides full amenities in the Amazon’s most isolated region. Nowhere else can anglers experience a fishing trip with this much adventure, variety and excitement. Protected within a closed Indian reservation, this exclusive fishery is truly in a land that time forgot.

Not only are these the ultimate Amazon fishing experiences, but Acute Angling offers some unique extras that are beyond expectations. Kayak Fishing is available in each operation. Imagine fighting these amazing fish hand-to-hand, up close and personal. Exploratory Trips are offered on occasion, going where no one else can or will to find the kind of adventure fishing experience rapidly disappearing from our planet. Or, if you’ve selected one of our trips, you can make it even more exciting by

Mesa Vista Ranch an “Oasis in the Texas Panhandle.” In 1971, T. Boone Pickens purchased approximately 2,900 acres along the south side of the Canadian River in Roberts County, Texas. Over the years, Boone began to assemble additional adjoining land positioned along the Canadian River corridor, and today the Mesa Vista Ranch comprises over 100 square miles of prime eastern Texas Panhandle ranch land. As Boone’s assemblage continued, he spent millions and millions of dollars to make Mesa Vista one of the best improved ranches in the United States. Now, at the age of 89, Boone has made the decision to sell his beloved Mesa Vista Ranch. This decision was not easy, because Boone has spent nearly 50 years Today Boone proudly boasts that transforming this Texas Panhandle the Mesa Vista Ranch offers, “the Ranch into a world’s best quail hunting.” wildlife paradise with spectacular water features and improvements fit for a king.

PURINA LEADING THE WAY IN DEER NUTRITION RESEARCH AND INNOVATION Nobody feels like eating when its 100 degrees in the shade. So when hot weather hits your deer herd, weight gain and body condition can suffer.

Research has clearly shown that white-tailed deer eat less when it gets hot, even when supplemental feed is available. Consuming food generates heat, causing the deer to eat less. The scientists at Purina Animal Nutrition have developed a supplement that is added to all of its AntlerMax protein feeds. Called Climate Guard, it encourages deer to continue to visit the feeder, even during the heat of summer. “It’s a blend of plant extracts that helps to support rumen metabolism of the deer, improve protein and energy efficiency and shift some of the digestion from the rumen to the small intestine,” said Dr. Mike Schlegel, Purina’s senior nutritionist for wildlife and small ruminant technical solutions. “It helps decrease the potential of acidosis.” Purina’s research on white-tailed does was performed in West Texas in the heat of summer, Schlegel said. Does consuming AntlerMax with Climate Guard were 10 percent heavier than does consuming a control diet after 42 days, and 8 percent heavier after 84 days. Also, does consuming pellets with Climate Guard visited the feeders more often during the heat of the day. “We saw that does supplemented with Climate Guard gained more weight and had improved body condition,” he said. “They visited feeders more often and had improved intake.” Ben Binnion, the wildlife manager and ranch foreman at the 23,000-acre Paloma Ranch in Maverick County in South Texas, said the Climate Guard definitely works. “We started using the Climate Guard in March, and I noticed while driving around the pasture I saw bucks at the feeders throughout the day,” he said. “And once I started running trail cameras, I got more daylight photos than I’ve ever received before, and individual bucks vising the feeder more than ever before.” Scott Hohensee, Purina Animal Nutrition’s wildlife specialist, said the Climate Guard supplement is a huge win for the industry since it gets deer to eat when they normally don’t. “It’s a research-backed product that works,” he said. “We want to offer the best products we can for our customers to help them maximize the genetic potential of their deer herd.” Climate Guard is available in AntlerMax products at Texas dealers.

LEGENDS RANCH YOUTH AND PURPLE HEART HUNTS This past fall, we at Legends Ranch, had the honor and privilege of hosting our 14th annual Youth Challenge and Purple Heart Hunts. These hunts provided exceptional time together with the wonderful children and deserving veterans who we had the pleasure of serving. We not only had a successful hunt in terms of whitetail trophies, but also from the heartwarming memories. We are humbled by the extreme generosity of our financial sponsors who see the value and importance of sponsoring those who are so deserving of these special hunts. PROTECT YOUR HEARING NOW Most hunters and shooters associate hearing loss with repetitive shooting over the years, loud music or driving heavy or farm equipment, and, for many of the older generation, during a time when hearing protection was an afterthought. “It doesn’t have to be repetitive, especially if you already hearing loss,” Deborah Price with Hearing Professional Center said. “I went to Africa last year, took one shot without my earplugs in and blew out half the hearing in my left year. I was fatigued because I had just flown over there and forgot. And the shot was from a .270, not the loudest of guns.” Few audiologists understand the hearing issues that develop with hunters and shooters. Price is the exception. “I’m pretty much the guru of audiologists in the hunting industry nationwide,” she said. “A few others dabble in it, but I have the most significant presence. It has to do with the fact that I am a hunter.” Price, an audiologist since 1978, is a Life Member of Dallas Safari Club and has been an exhibitor at the DSC convention each year since 1986. She has a piece of advice for those of us with hearing loss from shooting and hunting. “If you have hearing loss, seek help,” she said. “People don’t see them anymore. And it’s the mannerisms and behavior of the person with hearing loss that makes them look old, not the hearing aid.” Price offered a final warning. “If you go long enough without getting stimulation, it will affect you cognitively,” she said. In layman’s terms, if you aren’t hearing things, it will affect your brain and you’ll start losing mental aptitude. “The longer you go without hearing aids when you need them, you’ll start losing stuff mentally and you don’t get that back,” Price said. The Hearing Professional Center booth will be in the same area as always, and, of course, there will be hearing testing at the booth.

INTERNATIONAL HUNTERS A Tribe of Travelers By Dave Fulson

For Lone Star Outdoor News Your attendance at the 2018 DSC Legacy Convention is proof that you are indeed already a member of, or interested in joining the ranks of the international hunting tribe. I welcome you into this unique family of adventurous folks who share your passion. Certainly as hunters, we often bring back tangible mementoes of our time in the various game fields. If Lady Luck smiled on our hunting efforts, often a memory captured through the art of taxidermy will adorn a special spot in our home, as well as our heart. Unfortunately, some misinformed people, with no experience with who we are, or why we hunt, see that as the entirety of the hunting experience. To them, the hunt seems to an act of taking. What they do not understand, and it should be our mission to teach them, are the tremendous benefits that come to the international hunting destinations we visit. We need never apologize for the few hardearned things we leave with, but instead highlight, and be recognized for the things we leave behind! The ethical, legal sport of hunting, from Texas to Tanzania, is the fuel that runs the engine of conservation. That fact is especially true in the more remote,

and underdeveloped corners of the globe. Such areas often suffer from third world realities such as few, if any opportunities at gainful, or legal employment. Game in such areas is too often seen as nothing more than potential meat in the pot, regardless of the illegal, or inhumane methods required to place it there. But that has changed in most of these remote corners of the world that are blessed with game as a natural, and renewable resource. And we, the international hunters who visit these areas, are the “point of the spear” to that change. Hunting gives the game value. It provides rural peoples benefits never before realized in their area. Employment as camp staff, guides, road builders, skinners, trackers and more bring a financial windfall to people desperately seeking a better life for themselves and their families. Life-giving protein, in the form of game harvested by visiting hunters, is another tangible benefit to rural peoples. Gone is the need to poach for meat, or participate in the illicit trafficking of game. Wildlife is now seen as a resource, that if protected, will be the pathway to a better life, a goal all people strive for. Game is now protected, poaching and game violations are reported, and the arrival of visiting sports-

men and women celebrated. Hunting Is Conservation In Action. The DSC Legacy Convention is truly the first step in countless international hunting adventures. Dreams are put into motion each January as the finest guides, outfitters, booking agents, and hunting and shooting industry leaders converge on Dallas, Texas for the finest hunters convention and sporting expo of its kind in the world. You are, through your attendance and support of Legacy, joining a unified voice of conservationists from around the world. And we are making our voice heard. Enjoy the convention. Meet new friends and connect with old ones while supporting the outfitters and industry folks in attendance. They are here in support of DSC. Four days of adventure, fun, and excitement are literally at your feet. Book a hunt, raise your hand at an auction, become a member, or introduce a new one into the growing DSC family. You are now family. You are “Conservation In Motion.” See you on the floor!

TAKE THE STRESS OUT OF LAKE MANAGEMENT After a wet spring, much of Texas and Oklahoma was very dry in 2017. Private lakes and ponds are low, requiring attention to the fish, the baitfish and the vegetation. The biologists and fleet of trucks at Lochow Ranch Pond & Lake Management, based in Bryan, Texas are here to help. “The lake on your property is like a separate ranch, at least when it comes to growing big bass and managing your fish populations,” said John Jones, Lochow’s president. “The cows will eat all of the grass if there are too many cows. The same thing works in a lake — people just can’t see it.” Private lakes are beautiful and fun, and the fishing can be stellar. However, they also can be frustrating. Lochow Ranch can remove the frustration, leaving only the enjoyment. Last year, lakes filled up, but then slowly declined. What was ample vegetation has decreased, especially along barren shorelines, which will affect bait and bass recruitment. Otters are an increasing problem, often removing large numbers of the biggest fish from the lake. After a dry period, baitfish numbers may need to be supplemented. Lochow

Ranch has donated 1,000 pounds of shiners that will be available at the DSC auction, both online and on Wednesday night, and routinely stocks shiners in customer’s lakes. “Shiners are another forage source that aren’t really dense in most lakes, whether managed or unmanaged,” Jones said. “They are a preferred food source for big bass, and you don’t have to worry about them getting too big, like goldfish. This fall, the Lochow team took a break to help others — sending a dozen boats to Houston during Hurricane Harvey and helping rescue hundreds of people. “It was by far the best thing we did this year,” Jones said. Lochow Ranch manages more than

6,000 lakes in Texas and surrounding states, and has a monthly retainer program where their biologists will check your lakes and recommend how to address any issues, whether it involves management of fish populations, weed control, water treatment or aeration. They also help design and build new lakes, taking the customer’s personal preferences into mind and creating the

favorite spot on the ranch, including the installation of a floating dock to your specifications.

ROCK ISLAND TOPS $63M IN 2017 We love the outdoors, hunting, and firearms, so it is only logical that Rock Island Auction Company is proud to return as a sponsor to DSC for a 6th consecutive year. We feel that the work they do is vital, not only to the preservation and conservation efforts of flora, fauna and habitat, but also for hunters’ rights. It is in this same vein of activism that RIAC is proud to champion causes for the Second Amendment, hunters and veterans. You earn people’s trust when your values align, and more people than ever are trusting RIAC. We continually earn loyalty by offering the finest firearms at auction, aggressively marketing our clients’ items, and constantly exceeding expectations. This earned reputation in the industry has made RIAC the #1 firearms auction house in the world, a lofty position we have held since 2003. Thankfully, 2017 will prove no different with our December Premiere Auction totaling over $15.7 million in sales en route to over $63 million annual total. Our own industry record set last year seemed unbeatable, but we’ve never been so happy to be proven wrong by loyal, passionate and dedicated collectors. To put it plainly, these numbers leave our competition in the dust, and 2018 is looking to be even stronger. We have an unimaginable assortment of firearms, bladed weapons and military artifacts from some of the nation’s most notable

collectors. Perhaps most well-known among this elite group will be the collection of the NRA’s 63rd president, Allan D. Cors. He will be flanked by the lifetime collections of Robert Ferro, Dr. Bruce Shulak, the Robert Berryman Bowie Knife & Push Dagger Collection, as well as another appearance by the consummate collection of Robert M. Lee, the finest firearm collection assembled in the 20th century. RIAC is also pleased to announce one additional massive offering in 2018: military vehicles. All of the extraordinary aforementioned collections will appear beside these magnificent war machines.

Colossal tanks, experimental jeeps, recoilless rifles, rare armored vehicles, military motorcycles and the high-flying Russian military symbol of the Cold War: a MiG-21 supersonic interceptor fighter jet. All of which will be accompanying the ever-spectacular selection of collectible and modern firearms in all genres — Winchester, Colt, U.S. military, Smith & Wesson, foreign military, antiques and exquisite sporting arms. These remarkable offerings represent not only an opportunity for the buyer of fine arms, but also for those wishing to sell. Now is the time! News of these collections will spread like a forest

fire, reaching vast numbers of hunters, shooters, collectors, and investors. Consign alongside them and your items can enjoy the same bright spotlight. Build off of our success and reap the benefits!

BUILDING PERMANENT RANGES WITH TEXAS ARCHERY ACADEMY Imagine a network of permanent archery ranges around Texas. Help us build it! That’s the vision of the largest archery club in the state, the nonprofit Texans Archery Club and its community outreach Texas Archery Academy, together leading the effort to raise public awareness of the need for permanent infrastructure to support sustained participation in archery. Why? There is barely any ACCESS. Archery is the largest emerging sport since soccer and the best recruiting tool for youth organizations. There are school archery teams all over the U.S., including the successful National Archery in Schools Program (NASP) in Texas. In archery competition, participation numbers rival Little League! Youth get a taste at summer camp or a school program, but then what? Archery is missing from city and state parks. Retail bow shops cater mostly to bowhunters to test the latest gear. The few private archery clubs are limited in public outreach. It’s illegal to shoot in your backyard in most municipalities! So where are our children going to shoot? Imagine playing tennis without any tennis courts. Texans Archery Club has the ambition to build permanent access, 24-hour Shooters Clubs, urban indoor archery facilities in partnership with parks or by land acquisition; and a network of Archery Barns, outdoor ranges on land in regional growth patterns. These facilities will support a network of instructors to teach out of, teams to practice in, and safe family-friendly community access. We are looking for corporate and community sponsors who recognize how inexpensive ($50,000 for Archery Barns, $250,000 for Shooters Clubs) and beneficial to our state this effort is.

FAMILIES WELCOME “We traveled extensively on big game hunts around the world. The hospitality that greeted us at the Legends Ranch in Michigan ensured every need was cared for. The food was outstanding. The hunting experience was like no other. Accompanied by a guide, the blinds were comfortable and easily entered. While it is a highfenced area, the 2,000plus acres created a natural hunting experience with trophy bucks. To share all our experiences would take away the great surprises that await you at Legends.” –Andy & Jan A. “Legends Ranch is all about family. The owners, the guides, and entire staff treat you like family. The experience will move you and the memories will stay with you always. You can hunt world-class whitetail deer at several ranches across America, buy only the Legends has the total package. The food, hospitality, quality of deer and the knowledge of the guides are all top-notch. But it is the friendship, loyalty, trust, and family that sets Legends Ranch apart from all others.” –Jeremy & Keri J.

Perched atop a mesa just west of Fort Worth, Greystone Castle is a sight to behold. With four turrets peeking above the tree line, this majestic sight is one to be remembered. From its award-winning wingshooting program, to trophy whitetail and exotics, world-class bass fishing and our National Champion Sporting Clays Instructor, there is something for everyone at Greystone Castle. The Gold Medal whitetail deer program offers an all-inclusive package based on the opportunity to hunt the opening weekend of season. Not restricted by score, it is an exclusive chance to hunt for the whitetail of your dreams. This year’s results include a giant 493-inch deer taken by rifle. As the Orvis 2015 Wingshooting Lodge of the Year, Greystone has mastered the art of bird hunting. The ever-popular mixed bag hunt includes quail, pheasant, chukkar and Hungarian partridge. This upland walking hunt allows guests to experience great pointing dogs working over rolling terrain specially farmed for optimal bird habitat. The European pheasant hunt is a great way to get lots of shooting action and watch Labradors do what they do best, retrieve birds! The mallard hunts offer a great chance to hone your skills over water while the fastflying dove hunts offer an adrenaline rush every hunter craves. If you are looking for something different, you will find it in the exotic pasture full of animals from around the world. Species from Africa, Asia, South America, and Europe roam the Texas plains and thrive in the southern climate. Breeding herds of axis deer, aoudad, blackbuck antelope, sika and fallow deer mean there are plenty of trophies to be taken.

For those looking to relax and enjoy the water, Greystone offers more than 120 acres of stocked bass lakes. From small private lakes to the 80-acre Thurber Lake, every type of fishing opportunity exists. From fly-fishing, spin casters or simple hook and bobbers, there is a place for everyone. Kayaks and paddleboards let you go off on your own adventure or pontoon boats sneak you to the honey holes. Two championship Sporting Clays courses, two 5-stands, a training course and a wobble deck challenge every level of shooter. Our new 400-yard rifle and pistol range offers steel targets at a variety of ranges. Hone your skills on our new archery course featuring a tri-level static range and a 3-D walking course. Or just enjoy our scenic hiking and biking trails. What appeals to all visitors to Greystone are its top-of-the-line accommodations and gourmet meals. Guests enjoy 26 private rooms, gourmet dining from our executive chef, conference facilities and a swimming pool with hot tub and steam room. Along with this is the 2,600-squarefoot pavilion facility with custom bar, large seating areas, 65-inch TVs, carved limestone fireplace, Laser Shot, billiards and an overlook terrace with a custom outdoor fire pit. The ownership and staff are dedicated to creating one of the finest sporting experiences found anywhere in the world. Frank also was a previous winner of the Houston Safari Club Youth Hunter of the Year award. Frank graduated from Sam Houston State University in 2011, and he can handle any mount, from an elephant to a squirrel, and also designs and organizes trophy rooms. Creativity is a priority at B&B, where Mike and Frank are always looking at new ways to mount your trophies and preserve the memories of your hunts. Nestled in the heart of Austin, Texas lies Warren Wildlife Gallery, where Prairie Mountain Wildlife Studio and its sister company, Brush Country Studios, were chosen to design and build this amazing gallery. Over the past three years, Prairie Mountain and Brush Country have created a unique place for hunters, conservationists, and everyone in-between to gather. Including over 500 mammals and 450 birds, the gallery’s mission is to educate the youth and community with an unmatched experience while promoting hunting and conservation. Sporting many special attractions such as Theodore Roosevelt on a camel and his exploration tent from 1910, animatronic rhino, and special lighting effects, it is something you have to see for yourself. The founder wants to provide a new perspective among the upcoming generation and community when it comes to hunting and conservation. The gallery supports learning about animals that people may never have the chance to explore in nature.

Unearth your water, more with aqualocate How familiar are you with seismoelectric VS. seismic exploration technology? The AquaLocate GF6 exploration system may appear new in the industry (water, oil and gas exploration), however, the AquaLocate founders have been providing GF6 exploration services and/ or new operator training since 2001. The science behind the GF6 allows operators to image the actual resistive liquid within a geological rock structure, which is a fundamental difference between traditional exploration systems that provide information about the rock structure. The GF6 does not image the rock structure but rather images (sees) water, oil and gas. When a resistive liquid is detected the GF6 user can obtain quantification information such as zone depth and thickness, estimated yield (fresh water only), permeability (fresh water only), porosity, and transmissivity using the included proprietary GF6 software. AquaLocate clients range far

and wide across the globe and include small water well-drilling businesses, nonprofit entities, the United States government, geophysical exploration companies and frac water development entities. Today, independent operators are using the AquaLocate seismoelectric exploration units on all but one continent, each one having been trained by one of the founders of AquaLocate, Ervin Kraemer. The AquaLocate systems are user-friendly, require minimal initial training, can be implemented on nearly any size of land by a single individual in most cases, and, if that’s not enough, its affordability and low operational costs trump traditional exploration systems.

The hunt of dreams at El Monte Lodge I paused for a moment and glanced over at my best friend. We listened carefully for the telltale echo of thundering guns from the neighboring fields, but there was only silence. We were absolutely alone. Standing amid a growing raft of crimson shell casings as an endless sea of eared dove and iridescent pigeons enveloped us in rolling waves. It was the stuff of dreams. The legends of wingshooting in Argentina are well-known, but this place, a vast fertile valley in the central plain of San Luis Province, isolated from the rest of the shooting world by the Comechingones Mountains to the east, was the holy place. The undiscovered mecca of bird hunting in South America. While the bulk of the traveling hunters go to Cordoba to shoot in the dove factory; a unique, old-world experience lays on the other side of the mountain pass, with tens of millions of resident dove, and wild pigeons that have reached biblical plague proportions. To experience it for yourself, you’ll have to take a step back in time. El Monte Lodge, owned by Juan and Maria Alberdi, is the only full-service wingshooting lodge in the rich central valley (Valle del Conlara) of San Luis. It provides the perfect blend of location, accommodations, personal service, and unrivaled dove and pigeon shooting. The lodge itself is an immaculate restoration of a 100-plus-year-old residence built by the British railroad engineers in Argentina. With 14-foot ceilings, original English Oak flooring, expansive guest rooms with private

baths, and filled with beautiful antique furnishings; it harkens back to an era of Victorian elegance. Open living areas provide plenty of room to lounge in comfort when you’re not in the field, or for non-hunting companions to relax. For those who prefer the outdoors, you’ll find shaded galleries surrounding the lodge, and a couple of acres worth of manicured gardens to roam. The lodge and staff, and elegant meals are reminiscent of the days of Hemingway. These are the things we envisioned when we took up the scattergun for the first time. Standing in a blind beneath the blue sky with a beautifully marbled Beretta stock tucked tightly against the cheek, and thousands of streaking wings racing across our view. A bird boy stands behind, shells at the ready and a cool drink and a chair when you need to catch your breath and just absorb the magical elements of your surroundings. And trust me, you’ll need a minute or two to sit and relax. The lodge chef follows to the field and prepares a gourmet lunch, and then the meal is served under a broad shading tent and washed down with fine Argentine wine. Afterwards, some enjoy sitting and watching the bird-filled sky, but I enjoyed a nap in a hammock hung beneath the shading carob trees, before hearing the afternoon call to the gun. The magic of El Monte Lodge is the final destination of shooting sportsmen. The place where things you’ve seen only in your mind become real.

TEACHING OUTDOOR EDUCATION, PROMOTING CONSERVATION WORLDWIDE The Outdoors Tomorrow Foundation (OTF) successfully provides a unique process of growth throughout the world for conserving wildlife. The foundation begins with the United States’ youth, offering educational opportunities to students in a rapidly expanding 24 states. Additionally, OTF offers direct funding assistance to wildlife conservation programs worldwide. Strategically combining two crucial methods of growing and instilling knowledge, as well as endorsing similar programs, OTF prospers in driving the movement of wildlife conservation education. Outdoor Adventures (OA) is OTF’s education program that provides secondary school physical education curriculum. Each OA student is taught hunter, angler and boater education, NASP Archery, survival skills, CPR/first aid, outdoor cooking and many other outdoor units. Furthermore, OA Students learn the value of wildlife and sustainable use from the North American Model for Wildlife Conservation, distinguishing the OA program from all other public school outdoor education. Texas OA-enrolled schools alone achieved 9,200 Hunter Education Certifications in 2016. OA currently boasts over 35,000 students nationwide with an annual growth rate of 26 percent. Thousands of urban students who have never participated in outdoor programs now have an opportunity to experience nature in numerous ways through OA. Sponsors and donors of OTF’s OA program make possible students’ encounter with the outdoors. For example, Forever Wild sponsored

a Wyoming Antelope Hunt with special guest, Robin Yount, this past October for two OA students, Amy and Jay. First-time hunter Amy reported back that, “hunting was an amazing experience! One of the biggest things I learned is that hunting isn’t all about having a successful hunt; it’s about the adventure. The opportunity to track antelope, walk in open fields with roaming wildlife, and meet new friends.” Another student, Jay, wrote, “I had the most wonderful experience throughout the whole of the hunt... achieved through the Outdoor Adventures courses that I had taken. If given the opportunity, I would do it all again! None of this would have been possible without the Outdoor Adventures class.” This first-hand feedback illustrates the passion OA is sparking in America’s youth. OTF strives to inspire budding generations to embrace new outdoor skills, and discover the positive, life-changing effects of wildlife conservation. In conjunction with its education program, OTF supports conservation efforts by funding concurrent wildlife programs throughout the world. The foundation offers annual and life memberships, as well as special events to support its mission. On April 5, OTF is hosting its annual Rendezvous of the Guardians Banquet, followed by an inaugural Outdoor Adventures Cup April 6. Register for events, donate, become a member, and learn more on www.GoOTF.com. Help OTF carry on wildlife conservation and outdoor education by supporting the foundation today!

I remember exhibiting in Houston, at our first hunting show back in 2000. Recalling only around five other hunting exhibitors in attendance, how my business and this industry has changed in 20 years! 2018 will be Wilson Whitetail and Wing Shooting Ranch’s (WWR) 20th anniversary offering quality hunting services for corporations and individuals. Most of our business is with corporations that wish to entertain their preferred clients. WWR continues to grow in an industry that has seen many competitors enter and exit the industry. This business was started and remains a family-owned operation managed by Craig Wilson, who is passionate about delivering a positive customer experience. Wilson is personally present to manage every detail and logistic to ensure clients wish to return and refer others to WWR. With a minimum number of hunters, WWR offers groups exclusivity. This means the lodge and ranch are closed to all other bookings and this policy allows attention to be focused on one client at a time. JOIN THE FAMILY “There are few hunting destinations in the world that can match The Legends Ranch — the deer are fantastic; the grounds gorgeous beyond words; the lodge luxurious, warm and comfortable; the food so good as to be almost sinful; and, best of all, the entire staff is thoroughly professional, friendly, competent and always in search of ways to help. In an word, the Legends Ranch is a treasure to be experienced over and over.” -Bill F. “After eight consecutive years of hunting at the Legends Ranch, I can sincerely say it has become one of my “destination vacations,” annually. LONG-RANGE, FIRST SHOT ACCURACY Long-range shooting is more than a trend. It pursues perfection in first-shot accuracy in hunting situations. With precision rifles from Evolved Ballistics, you will get the whole package. The company uses Proof Research rifles and barrels for extreme precision. Then, Evolved will configure your new rifle for your long-range application, developing the ideal load for your rifle that is specific to your needs, whether hunting or target shooting, and referring you to a custom loading service to obtain custom loads on demand. “Using our rifles, loads and with us shooting them, our client rifles are averaging under .25 MOA,” said Dale H. Robinson of Evolved Ballistics in Boerne. The next step is creating a precise ballistic profile and validating the data and rifle out to 1,060 yards. That data is provided to the customer to be used with the customer’s ballistic calculator. Finally, there is the training provided by Evolved Ballistics. “We teach you to achieve precision and long-range accuracy,” Robinson said. “Our range and field course are designed for hunters to make that first shot, with targets out to 1,060 years. The first shot is the most important.” The combination results in supreme confidence to make the shot at the buck of a lifetime. Evolved Ballistics also offers Nightforce optics with its precision rifles, along with other accessories. You really can have a rifle that is lightweight with light recoil, rugged durability and match-grade precision.

Buying or selling a ranch? Think Ranch Investments Since 1982, Ranch Investments has emerged as one of the leading ranch brokerage firms in the state of Texas. Historic sales of 1.4 million acres totaling nearly $1 billion in value have established our prominent place in the market. Initially based in Austin, the primary marketing efforts were focused in the six counties surrounding Austin and the South Texas Brush Country. During the past 10 years, brokers and agent representatives have been added in 12 locations, allowing us to better serve the entire state of Texas. The founder, Kenneth O’Meara, developed a concept that brought together a team of associates with varied backgrounds in farming, ranching and land ownership. Our associates have extensive knowledge in wildlife management and commercial hunting, oil and gas production, row crop and irrigated farming, equine centers, cow, calf and feeder operations as well as real estate development. This enables us to best serve buyers and sellers with their transactions in the most efficient and professional manner. In 2008, John Ed Stepan took over the helm at Ranch Investments and manages the daily operations of the firm. Along with his expert staff, he coordinates print media and Internet marketing, works alongside his team of associates to assist them in any way and works directly with clients. As a Life Member of the Dallas Safari Club, John Ed has supported numerous wildlife conservation efforts over the years. His background is varied and unique including international hunting consultant, game ranch

development, commercial hunting operations, rural land development, commercial real estate and mineral production. Adhering to its roots, Ranch Investments is actively engaged in the marketing and acquisition of working farms and ranches. And since 2008, a new set of benefits has become available to our customers. With our network of accountants, attorneys, qualified intermediaries (for 1031 Exchanges) and real estate brokers, we have the team of professionals to assist you in the sale of your property and the reinvestment of the proceeds. Many times we encounter sellers who own property of significant value that has been in the family many years, resulting in a low-cost basis, and the tax implications can be significant. We work to develop a strategy such as utilizing the 1031 Exchange to reinvest the proceeds tax-deferred into income producing properties. On the opposite end of the spectrum is the firsttime landowner, whether someone seeking a weekend getaway or a working land investment. We carefully listen to our clients’ objectives, develop a plan and locate the ideal property. After the purchase, we offer a full range of consulting services in ranch development for maximum enjoyment and utilization. Our expert team will assist you in taking an undeveloped piece of property and building lakes, roads, game fences, barns, houses, lodges and runways. Utilizing our network of wildlife biologists, we will develop a plan for the propagation of native and exotic game,

migratory and upland game birds. For more than 35 years, Ranch Investments has been trusted by families, foundations, corporations and trusts to represent them in their rural real estate transactions. Our reputation is based on honesty and integrity, so you may rest assured that Ranch Investments will always be by your side.

THE FLAVORED CORN THAT REALLY WORKS

717

76 |

The Bait Corn Company has doubled the number of dealers that carry its product in the last year, and more are being added every month. The product established itself in South Texas, and now has expanded up Interstate 45 and into North and East Texas. Bait Corn is unique in its homemade attractant that truly brings in the deer. “We use an oil-based coating at proper concentrates,” said Bait Corn developer Robert Champion. “Most of the other flavored corn on the market uses less expensive water-based or powder coatings.” All of the Bait Corn is processed in Texas at the El Campo facility, and the corn is placed in 40-pound, easy-open bags. “I get the cleanest, healthiest corn I can find then spray on the attractant. We only use the best ingredients.” Champion said. “Bait Corn takes corn to a whole new level.” Bait Corn currently comes in five flavors: Persimmon, Peanut Butter, White Oak Acorn, Green Apple and Red Delicious Apple. And Vanilla will be added in 2018. Each flavor has been extensively tested and has proven superior to both corn and other flavored corn products. “And our testing is showing great results with the new Vanilla flavor,”

Champion said. In 2018, the Bait Corn bags will be color coded by flavor. “Many people are trying to make the cheapest product possible,” Champion said. “We’re trying to make the best.” Champion encourages people to go to The Bait Corn Company Facebook page, where he is able to interact with his customers, and they can learn how other people are using Bait Corn. “They are our best testers,” he said. Each 40-pound bag costs $8.99, and the company’s website provides a list of dealers and one of the strongest guarantees in the industry. Dealer inquires may be made to robertchampion@baitcorn.com.

BID ON ONE OF 10 MAINE MOOSE HUNTS!

Embark on the hunt of a lifetime, and help send kids to conservation camp. The State of Maine annually auctions 10 moose permits to the highest bidder, with all proceeds creating scholarships that send kids to conservation camp in Maine. Maine has the largest and densest moose population in the lower 48 states. With more than 17 million forested acres you can hunt, including the North Maine Woods, Maine’s prime moose habitat encompasses more than 3.5 million acres. You can choose where in the Maine you would like to

hunt moose, and which September or October week you prefer. Maine’s 10 Moose Auction bids raise more than $150,000 solely dedicated to sending kids to conservation camps! Each year, Maine’s largest moose weigh more than 1,000 pounds dressed, and have racks with spreads larger than 5 feet. Registered Maine guides and the Maine Sporting Camp tradition is a wonderful way to experience Maine’s moose hunt. Don’t miss out on the hunt of a lifetime, and place your bids!

FIRST SPRING SHOW FOR TTHA

Texas Trophy Hunters Association has held three extravaganzas each August, in Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio. A few years ago, a fourth show was added in Corpus Christi. The day before the Corpus Christi show was to open, a storm called Hurricane Harvey arrived, and the show had to be postponed. It has now been rescheduled, and will be TTHA’s first-ever spring show. Set for March 23-25, 2018, the show will add more fishing-related exhibits, as the prime fishing times along the coast are set to begin. Also, to help in areas affected by Harvey, TTHA will conduct a fundraiser in conjunction with the show to bring some additional revenue to the area. Founded more than 40 years ago,

Texas Trophy Hunters Association is recognized as “The Voice of Texas,” and is a one-stop resource for all of your hunting and outdoor needs. A memberbased organization, TTHA offers a bi-monthly publication, The Journal of Texas Trophy Hunters, an award-winning TV show, “Trophy Hunters TV,” along with its four annual trade shows, Hunters Extravaganza. For information on the Corpus Christi show or to exhibit at any or all of the Hunters Extravaganzas, contact Christina Pittman, trade show director.

TRADITIONS “A note of thanks for a great hunt at Legends this year. What made this hunt so special was having my 14-year-old grandson Kyle with us for his first true hunting experience. The way he bonded with the guides, from picking the hunts at 5 a.m., to dressing deer and then sitting around with them while the day’s hunts were discussed in the evening. He was treated warmly and respectfully; that will leave lasting memories. He was one excited young man when he harvested his first buck. This was our eighth year and it exceeded our expectations and we booked for next year. Legends inviting Kyle back, as their guest, is an example of how Legends embraces young hunters and treats the old-timers. Thank you for a great time and we are looking forward to next year.” –The Field family, Ron, Doug and Kyle

Quail and pheasant hunters need not travel far to experience a memorable hunt, luxurious facilities and fabulous food. Wildcat Creek Quail Hunting Resort is the place — where a memorable quail or pheasant hunting adventure awaits. For wingshooters who favor the pheasant, full pheasant hunts are being offered this year. WCR is a family affair and the vision of Ron and Evonne Parker and their sons. Now, in our 10th season, we offer much more than just a quail hunt. There is always something new at WCR. “We want the experience to be firstclass but yet not stuffy,” said owner Ron Parker. Located in Red River County near Detroit, the property consists of 1,200 plus acres of well-managed land that will take hunters back in time. The habitat, birds and dogs are firstrate, with fields cleared out of the thick woods by Parker. Wingshooters may want to get their hunts booked, though, as the word is getting out about Wildcat Creek, where 12 weekends are already fully booked for

the upcoming season. After the hunt, the lodge and the food served at WCR may be even more memorable. WCR also has competition-style sporting clay stations for parties and corporate events. At WCR, we strive to produce the hunts of a lifetime. Be sure to call and set your reservation now so you can start building memories and become part of our extended family.

PREPARING TODAY’S YOUTH FOR TOMORROW’S OUTDOORS For 14 years, Outdoor Texas Camps has provided boys and girls from around the country, ages 9-16, with the opportunity to build skills, character and memories in the outdoors. The goal of OTC has always been to develop a detailed course curriculum, researched and executed in a professional manner by some of the most experienced outdoor instructors in their respective fields, at some of the best public and private locations in Texas, all while maintaining a safe and fun environment. OTC currently offers 12 general and specialty outdoor camps in Texas. Their General Outdoor Activity Camps include instruction in riflery, trap and skeet, handguns, archery, camping and survival, game scoring, game calling, blood trailing, fishing, fly-fishing and fly-tying and game management and conservation. OTC’s Specialty Camps focus on archery and archery hunting, deer hunting, waterfowl hunting, upland bird hunting (Oklahoma), freshwater fishing and saltwater fishing. In addition, all campers participate in a Hunter’s Education Safety Course, if they’re not already certified. To

accomplish this, OTC has set standards high enough to not only satisfy the campers and their parents, but the outdoor industry as well. While most summer camps strive to become larger and larger, with many camps hosting thousands of campers each summer, Outdoor Texas Camps continues to believe that the goals set forth above are far more achievable with no more than 24 campers per camp. Come visit us at the DSC’s “Youth Wildlife Conservation Experience” in Hall F, January 4-7.

SIMPLIFY YOUR HUNT WITH NIKON’S RANGEFINDING BINOCULARS A deer has stepped into view, and it’s a nice one. How far away is he? There’s no more need to fumble around, looking for that rangefinder that may have fallen out of your pocket or is still in your backpack. And there’s no more need to hang a rangefinder from your neck to avoid that issue. It’s in your hand and you are looking through it — the Nikon LaserForce Rangefinding Binocular. Nikon Sport Optics’ LaserForce 10×42 binocular comes with a built-in, 1900-yard laser rangefinder. “I tried the prototype and ranged out to 2,100 yards,” said Waylan Owens of Owens Outdoor Sales, who represents Nikon. What is unique about the LaserForce? The glass, brightness levels, speed, size/weight, warranty, and, especially, the price. “This little thing has four brightness levels — you can see the readings any light and with any background,” Owens said. “And its reaction time is three times faster.” LaserForce features a laser capable of ranging distances from 10-1,900 yards with instantaneous readouts on a crisp OLED display that offers a 4-step brightness adjustment, making it easily readable under any light conditions and against various objects.

84 |

Featuring Nikon’s ID (Incline/Decline) Technology to compensate for the effects that slope has on trajectory, LaserForce provides hunters and shooters with the compensated range necessary to make the shot, whether uphill, downhill or on level ground. The glass is top quality at a better price, using ED (Extra-low dispersion) Glass. This superior glass corrects chromatic aberration that causes color fringing for high-resolution, contrast-rich images. The long eye relief design, combined with turn-and-slide rubber eyecups facilitate a custom fit for users’ individual viewing needs, with or without eyeglasses. The new LaserForce rangefinder binocular combines superior optical quality, ergonomic single-hand control, technologically enhanced features and a 100-percent backing with Nikon’s No-Fault Policy. “A lifetime electronic warranty is unheard of,” Owens said. “The European models cost three times as much and don’t provide it.” And it is smaller and lighter than the competition. “It is 30 percent shorter in height and weighs 30 percent less,” Owens said. “It’s a game-changer in rangefinding technology.”
