WATER BUFFALO
crashing Photography and words by David J. Sams
Screeching sounds of thousands of cockatoos woke every hunter each morning. As the dew on the traditional African-style camp dried, we drove the rough roads in the Australian Outback and found herds of water buffalo. We were searching for the old boys that were hanging off by themselves, too old to breed. Dingos followed the vehicles, hoping there would be food soon. If there was no kill that day, they howled at night next to your tent. For 22 years, Graham Williams with Australian Buffalo Hunters has been paying attention to detail, keeping the hunting and camp experience as traditional as possible. Stalking though high grasses after the huge animals kept you on your toes. These buffalo do charge when surprised. As the sun set, the smell of grilled buffalo backstrap permeated the camp, while the hunters sipped whiskey and told stories of the day.

WORLD-CLASS HUNTING RANCH BACK ON MARKET There was a great deal of excitement in South Texas hunting circles when it was recently announced that part of the famous Double-Dime Ranch in Zavala County was back on the market. This is the ranch that hosted hunting television shows and professional athletes at its world-class facilities. About an hour’s drive from Uvalde and two hours from San Antonio, what is now called the Myane Ranch has it all: • 4,289 +/- acres • 5,000-square-foot, five-bedroom home • 34-guest lodge • Foreman – guest houses • 16,000-square-foot barn • Indoor and outdoor entertainment areas • Commercial kitchen • Quail runs • Dog rig and dog kennels Water, water everywhere There are 24 large ponds — many sustaining fish — providing a game water source about every 175 acres, and four irrigation wells for food plots. These features, plus super South Texas vegetation, support the surveyed 1 deer/11 acres and 1:1 buck/doe ratio. With a Level 3 MLD Permit providing the opportunity to hunt 60 bucks and 60 does, the ranch sells turnkey with 22 elevated blinds and 18 feeders. Offered by Lockhart Real Estate, contact Jesse Lockhart, broker.

EXPERIENCED AGENTS MAKE HUNTING CHOICES EASIER Joel Pat Latham has traveled to 61 countries of the world, mostly on hunting trips. The roads weren’t always paved, and he has hunted with some of the best — along with a few of the worst. Pat is the founder and president at High Mountain Hunts, and will help you choose the best destination for your bucket-list hunt, whether in North America, Europe, Argentina, Asia or Africa. “Excellent reputations are expensive, but bad ones are just as expensive,” he said. “If a hunter goes to a foreign country, an intelligent sportsman must rely on the advice of an experienced agent. He should strive to have an excellent agent, excellent area to hunt, excellent outfitter, excellent guide and a firm commitment from all involved.” Pat has a Business Administration degree from Texas A&M University where he attended on a football scholarship and played for four years. For one additional season, he served as a coach.
He is a regular member of The Boone & Crockett Club and has been an emeritus member since 2016. He served as chairman of several committees including the ethics committee, and is an official measurer for Boone & Crockett Club, SCI and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Pat is Life Member #93 of the Wild Sheep Foundation and served as treasurer under two presidents and then as vice president. He has harvested 12 of the wild sheep of the world and all the upland game birds of North America, multiple pairs of Himalayan Snow Cock, a Russian Capercaillie Grouse and a Russian Blackcock. Pat was a charter member and president of the Texas Chapter of the Foundation for North American Wild Sheep (now Texas Bighorn Society). He is a life member of DSC, Houston Safari Club, SCI, Wild Sheep Foundation, Texas Bighorn Society and the National Rifle Association. Because he has spent more than 50 years
gathering information through other hunters and travelers, Pat is qualified to give advice on hunting and on good outfitters. “A lifetime of wisdom is the reward for experience and listening,” he said. Pat has paid for more than his share of overpriced trips delivered by unreliable hunting outfitters, and has shared a fire with some of the best in the some of the premier places of the world. His motto is, “Good judgment comes from experience and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.” When you choose High Mountain Hunts, all of this experience is included in the price.

THE SAME, BUT NEW WITH CAPT. PEACOCK
Exclusive Adventures in Harmony with Nature Throughout history, man has followed the journeys of migratory birds and the tracks of wildlife to discover secret places. Places full of nourishment, relaxation, serenity and astonishing beauty. The initial journey is often the beginning of a long and respectful relationship with the land, its culture, the local flora and fauna. The start of a life in deep harmony and appreciation of nature. It was a journey just like this which lead to the establishment of the Clifton Estate in 1774. Throughout the centuries, the profound relationship between the land and its owners grew and prospered, culminating in the foundation of the Buccara Wildlife Reserve Karoo. Wildlife conservation forms the nucleus of our operations on the Buccara Wildlife Reserve Karoo. Our annual hunting quota is calculated scientifically every season by doing an aerial wildlife census to determine the annual population growth or decline. This together with constant monitoring, herd management to avoid inbreeding, and ecological studies of our grazing capacity by qualified staff and consultants throughout the year, enables us to establish a sustainable hunting quota to be marketed each year. A safari hunt of a lifetime awaits you on 12,000 hectares (27,000 acres) with no internal fences allowing for free roaming and fair-chase pursuit. Off-road vehicles and SUVs are used primarily to travel to and from individual hunting grounds fast and efficiently.

Acute Angling discovers new giant Amazon peacock bass river In September of 2018, Acute Angling operated a three week exploratory trip on the Rio Curicuriari. At the most remote western edge of the Amazon basin, this protected river is the Rio Negro’s last unexplored giant peacock bass tributary. Although three weeks was hardly enough time to learn all aspects of this big river system, one important fact jumped out immediately: There are huge fish here! This beautful blackwater river, completely enclosed within a remote Indian reservation, holds honkin’ big peacock bass that have never been fished before and never seen a lure. We found four clear facts; · There are huge fish here. · This is not a numbers fishery. · We need more data · We’re going back again! This river has already shown that it is a potential world-record fishery, so we have extremely high expectations for our return. Our short visit produced an astounding 22 fish over 20 pounds in a short three-week visit and a total of 54 trophy fish. Keep in mind that this doesn’t consider the amount of trophies lost — we estimate as least as many trophy fish were lost as were landed, including some giants that simply overwhelmed our anglers. We’re still missing a ton of information
Official Day Program
about this fishery, so, we’re going back to explore further! This time around, we plan an in-depth, extended exploration to fill in the blanks and perhaps find ourselves another new world-record. We’re planning to use a mobile accommodation that will allow us to cover more water faster. We’ll be equipped with complete measuring instrumentation to precisely determine fishery parameters and with an array of fishing tools such as sonar and fish finders. The 2019 Curicuriari Exploratory will operate from a brand-new floating hotel, with single occupancy cabins, with individual air-conditioners and private bathrooms with hot showers in each cabin and big, comfortable beds. It will provide angler comfort levels second to none. This is an extremely remote region, creating significant logistical challenges, thus, anglers will arrive via a direct floatplane flight. Trip dates are available during the region’s optimal dry season period in September and October of 2019. The total trip price is $7,950. You can buy cheaper trips and more expensive trips, but you can’t buy this kind of experience anywhere else at any price. If you’ve been dreaming of a chance to go hand to hand with the biggest specimens of the world’s most powerful sportfish, then don’t miss this great opportunity.

37 YEARS IN BUSINESS
Professionalism, Quality and Honesty is what kept us in business this long.
PRIVATE LAKES, PONDS NEED MANAGEMENT, TOO Ranch managers rely on good stock assessments to manage their cattle and deer. Cattle are often assessed daily and deer managers conduct helicopter surveys once or twice a year, deploy trail cameras and scout until they can identify most if not all of the deer on the ranch. When it comes to private ponds or lakes, most managers simply wait for problems to develop and by then the damage is done. “Having a sound monitoring program is essential for maintaining self-sustaining fisheries,” said John Jones, president of Lochow Ranch Pond and Lake Management. “For our clients, we do three or more electrofishing surveys each year to closely monitor populations dynamics and make adjustments proactively. With a lake or pond, by the time you notice a problem, it’s likely already negatively affecting fish growth.” Jones will be the presenter at a seminar at the DSC convention this year. The presentation is titled “Lake Management: From Start to Fish,” and will occur on Sat., Jan. 19 at 12:30 p.m. “We’ll talk about how to establish fundamental management practices (feeding/ fertilizer programs, habitat, bass harvest, vegetation control) and how having a firm foundation can help your lake persist through disturbances (flood, drought, predator),” Jones said. Also note a donation from Lochow Ranch will be auctioned at the convention’s Friday night banquet (bids can also be accepted online). Come bid on a private pond fish package which includes 500 pounds of golden shiners, a three-hour electrofishing survey, and a written report. “The shiners are a versatile forage fish option suitable for all types of fisheries,” Jones said. The electrofishing survey will include a written fisheries assessment and management plan, providing specific recommendations to help create your ideal fishery. “Each lake on your property is like a ranch where all your animals are hidden from site. We use the electrofishing survey to assess your stocks,” added Jones. One fish predator causes Jones to become serious. “One problem for private fishing lakes often goes undetected — people have no idea that the North American river otter is probably the single most important challenge facing lake managers. While these animals do leave recognizable signs, it is often really difficult to get landowners to understand that they have an otter problem when the animals are so rarely seen. Otters are primarily nocturnal predators and eat around 7 pounds of fish each day. To make matters worse, otters focus on your very largest fish. It can really be heartbreaking for owners who get cheated out of their biggest fish, taking away the fun of lake management.” Lochow Ranch’s biologists and fleet of trucks are based in Bryan, Texas from where they manage more than 6,000 lakes in Texas and the surrounding states. In addition to one-off services, Lochow Ranch has a monthly retainer program where fisheries biologists visit the property monthly closely monitoring your lake and can be proactive in addressing potential problems. Lochow Ranch’s full set of services also includes new lake design and build, where goals and preferences are taken into consideration in creating a personalized waterbody. From trophy bass fishing to a purely recreational impoundment or somewhere in-between we can create an ideal water body that will serve as a focal point for the property. We’ll see you at the show.

IT’S WORTH IT TO PROTECT YOUR HEARING Deborah Price at Hearing Professional Centers introduced her two sons, now each in his 40s, to hunting through Dallas Safari Club. “My youngest has been to Africa twice and the older one once,” she said. “I gave all my guns to them, now I mostly fly-fish in Belize. Now they are introducing others to hunting.” Both of her sons use the electronic ear protectors that Deborah provides to hunters who travel all over the world. “They wouldn’t think of hunting without them,” she said. In addition to providing hearing protection, the devices also amplify surrounding sounds. “My oldest son, Hal, while stalking an animal in Africa, said one of the guys was making so much noise it was affecting the stalk,” Deborah said. “Hal heard it because of the ear protectors. The other guy didn’t realize he was making so much noise because he had hearing loss — Hal tells that story to everyone who asks whether they should have the electronic ear protection.” Most hunters and shooters associate hearing loss with repetitive shooting over the years, loud music or driving heavy or farm equipment, and, for many of the older generation, during a time when hearing protection was an afterthought.
26 |
Few audiologists understand the hearing issues that develop with hunters and shooters. Price is the exception. “I’m pretty much the guru of audiologists in the hunting industry nationwide,” she said. “A few others dabble in it, but I have the most significant presence.” Price, an audiologist since 1978, is a life member of Dallas Safari Club and has been an exhibitor at the DSC convention each year since 1986. She has a piece of advice for those of us with hearing loss from shooting and hunting. “If you have hearing loss, seek help,” she said. “People don’t see them anymore. And it’s the mannerisms and behavior of the person with hearing loss that makes them look old, not the hearing aid. With what you’re spending on the hunts and trips, it’s worth the few thousand to protect your hearing.” The Hearing Professional booth is near where it has always been, and it’s easy to find — just look for the red, white and blue balloons on each end of the booth.

MAKING THE
most OF IT
By Larry Weishuhn
For Lone Star Outdoor News “I was overwhelmed! I thought I would simply stop by the Convention Center, see the entire show in a couple of hours and then head back home in time to have supper with my wife. Two hours into the hall, I had covered not quite two aisles. I kept running into booths which interested me to no end, not to mention visiting with friends to catch up on their past year’s hunting adventures. Did learn a valuable lesson however; next year I was at the convention all four days and even with that, I still did not get around to seeing all the booths. That time, too, I brought my wife and family with me, realized after that first short visit there were many things at the convention that were of interest to them as well.” I smiled listening to my newfound friend, who had waited to introduce himself and his family as I stepped off of the stage at the annual DSC Convention, where I had just finished a friendly “public discussion” with the likes of Craig Boddington, Ron Spomer, Jim Shockey and Ivan Carter. Before disappearing into the crowd, he said with a broad smile, “This is like a huge family reunion! Love it!” With that he was gone — hurrying to visit with a list of booths he had told me he hoped to visit before the show closed for the evening events. Indeed, the annual Dallas Safari Club Convention is like a huge family reunion comprised of those who love the outdoors, hunting, wildlife conservation and all things associated with such. In preparing to attend the 2019 DSC “Mogambo” convention, be sure to allow yourself and those with you plenty of time to explore the 1,800 booths from throughout the world. Arrive early and stay late. Wear comfortable walking shoes. In attending the DSC convention, comfort is more important than fashion. If there are specific hunts, areas, animals, guns or hunting products you are interested in, make a list of those booths and their locations. Visit those before walking the aisles, which if you walked all aisles might approach a distance of over 10 miles! Allow time to visit with friends you will be seeing and the new ones you will be making while at the convention. Plan on spending some time attending the various seminars adjacent to the “floor” and events happening on “the stage” located on the convention floor proper. The stage is home for such events as the annual DSC Professional Hunter’s Cup Challenge (always great fun). Meet the Outdoor Legends, live unplugged entertainment Friday and Saturday afternoon and numerous other fun and engaging events held there; highly entertaining and maybe even a bit educational. Plan on attending the evening events which are comprised of great food, most interesting speakers and auctions for the finest hunts, outdoor adventures, and special guns among other one-of-a-kind items. Know too, the convention is put on by volunteers and all money raised by DSC at the annual events goes toward wildlife conservation, education and hunter advocacy. Look forward to seeing you there!

Embrace the fun with big bore air rifles By Keith Warren

RICARDO AGUADO (609) 780-0693
When asked for the number one reason that I enjoy shooting big bore air rifles, my answer is simple. It’s fun! Never in my wildest dreams would I have expected to enjoy shooting and hunting with the different kinds of rifles. Their accuracy is incredible and from a hunter’s perspective, they are extremely lethal. One of the drawbacks when hunting with these rifles is the need to take a bulky tank along on my travels, especially when we deal with airlines, camera and hunting gear. The biggest challenge in shooting a pre-charged pneumatic air guns has been being able to rely on a place to get air for my tank. Traveling internationally, I have found that most dive shops, if you can find them open, do not have the necessary adapters to fit the tanks. Fire departments are usually good places to get filled up. Another challenge is finding a dive shop that is open when I need them. Many of my hunts are during the dead of winter, and try finding an open dive shop in Canada during December. Or, see if you can find an open dive shop in Montana in January. So gassing up my tank has been the biggest hassle for me — until now. I recently ordered the Nomad air compressor from Air Venturi and this little workhorse has really helped make traveling with my PCP air guns so much easier. Weighing in at a 17 pounds, the Nomad is
Keith Warren
capable of running off 110V, 220V or off of a 12-volt vehicle battery. So it is extremely convenient. The Nomad attaches directly to the fill port on your rifle. With one switch, it turns on and fills the tank to the desired pressure. It normally takes a few minutes to completely charge one of my rifles. Once the desired pressure is reached, it shuts off and you can bleed the line. Once it’s removed, you are good to go. This is one must-have piece of gear for any outdoorsman who does not want to worry about taking a tank along with him or trying to find a place to fill it. It’s made me much more at ease to know that where ever I travel, I can rely on the Nomad to keep my guns topped off. Now I can spend more time developing a hunting strategy rather than being on the phone hoping to find a place to fill up my tank.

CAM TIME By Dave Fulson
For Lone Star Outdoor News “Utility player” is a term most often associated with the sport of baseball. And lucky is the team that has a player who can transition to different positions or roles on a moment’s notice. He is valuable because he possesses a wide variety of skill sets that combined help his team win. Safari Classics Productions Cameron Kuenzer may not play baseball, but he is a true professional in his world, and he plays a wide variety of roles at an All-Star level. DSC members may know Cameron from his editing work on our three DSC sponsored TV series on The Outdoor and Sportman Channel. Or, it could be his great work on DSC and DSC Foundation social media messaging. Certainly his smiling face is recognizable as he flies around our convention filming, taking photos, lining up interviews, or the dozens of other tasks he juggles during this important four-day event. Cameron also has been a driving force of the DSC Conservation Society, made up of young professionals who make up the future of our passion.
That leads us back to a cold deer blind in Oklahoma. On the south side of the beautiful Wichita Mountains in Oklahoma lies my second home, Tarbone Ranch. The ranch lies beneath the mountain whose name it bears, and was the dream of my late friend and brother, Ken Cook. We lost Ken going on three years now, but his wife, Tammy, and their twin boys Hunter and Tanner, grown men now with families of their own, continue Ken’s legacy of conservation and land stewardship. Tarbone is home to bison as well as Rocky Mountain elk, both once native to the prairie and mountains of this unique region. But it is best known for its big Oklahoma whitetails. Cameron has truly become an honorary member of the Cook family, and he makes sure he is the cameraman when we film episodes of Trijicon’s World Of Sports Afield there each fall. He has seen several big Tarbone bucks taken, including one by yours truly, and even his dad, Scott. Before we departed from a hunt we filmed last year, I told Tammy to save me a 2018 manage-
ment buck, as my partners and I wanted to surprise Cameron with a hunt the following year. One day as Cameron and I were working in the studio, I told him “don’t schedule anything the first week in November, we’re filming at Tarbone.” “Great, who am I filming?” he asked. “You’re not, I’m filming this hunt,” I said, trying not to tip my hand. “OK, who’s the hunter?” he asked. With a genuine smile, I said, “It’s your turn behind the rifle, Cam; you’ve earned a buck of your own up there.” I can’t remember exactly what he said, but I do remember the beaming smile of a guy that was truly thunderstruck with excitement. On day three of the hunt, on a dark and freezing afternoon, Hunter and Cameron found their buck, and I captured the moment through the viewfinder of my Sony as a fine young man took a fine Oklahoma buck. As he was proudly kneeling beside this great buck, the guy behind the camera may have been the proudest of all. “Well done, Cam, you deserved it.”

ALL OF THE RANCH, NONE OF THE HASSLE
Just a short drive from Dallas, a new and exclusive sportsman’s club is making a big splash with nine new memberships sold since opening this year. What is it about this place that asks members to hand over more than $1 million to join? Talk to any one of the members and they’ll offer some version of the same story. “I owned a ranch before and got tired of all the expenses and hassle keeping up with the place.” “I didn’t want another full-time job keeping up with a ranch property.” “A friend of mine owns a ranch and I wouldn’t wish that job on anyone.” How do you find the perfect ranch without all the hassle? White Oak Creek Ranch has the answer — a shared ownership structure that offers a unique and ultra-exclusive opportunity for only 20 members to enjoy all of the benefits of ranch ownership without the traditional work, expense and hassle. At White Oak Creek Ranch, each member owns 5 percent of the property along with a beautiful 10-acre building site. This format provides for the ongoing maintenance, improvements and management of the property as well as everything needed to enjoy a luxurious ranch lifestyle — including boats, recreational vehicles and gun/skeet ranges. A new hunting headquarters facility with individual owner storage
areas and the White Oak Creek Ranch Lodge with a resort pool are both under construction. In addition to the unique ownership structure, White Oak Creek Ranch is a one-of-a-kind property. On nearly 5,000 acres, 50 miles of trails navigate multiple creeks and 3,500 acres of hardwood timber. For the last three decades, the property has been meticulously developed and groomed to create a sportsman’s paradise. Tens of thousands of oak trees support spectacular duck, deer and pig populations which have made this property famous. Some of the most coveted areas of the property are the legendary duck-hunting marsh and flooded timber which have been featured extensively on hunting shows such as MOJO Outdoors. More than 600 acres of floodcontrolled duck marsh and green timber provide a hunting experience that is the most similar to Stuttgart than anywhere you can find in the Lone Star State. For the angler, more than 180 acres of managed lakes and ponds offer worldclass trophy bass, as well as robust crappie and catfish populations. Located in Mount Pleasant, Texas, the ranch is a 90-minute drive from Dallas and only an 80-minute drive from Tyler. Mount Pleasant Regional Airport is only 20 minutes away. Do You Have A Deer Stopper?
Did you know there’s a greater chance of your child hitting a deer with his or her truck than getting all “A’s” in school? One out of 167 U.S. drivers will have a wildlife vehicle collision, or WVC, this year. Yes, there are so many WVCs, an abbreviation was needed to save time between insurance claims. Family-owned, Ranch Hand handcrafts the finest American made truck accessories that look great and save lives. The Ranch Hand Grille Guard is one fully welded piece of steel mounted directly to the frame of your truck or SUV. Its durability comes from hardy 12-gauge steel tubing — Ranch Hand refuses to use expanded metal due to its inferior properties.
In many WVCs, the animal has a tendency to come up over your vehicle and into the windshield. A Ranch Hand Grille Guard or replacement bumper will often push a deer under your vehicle or off to the side of the road. Above all, it’s worth mentioning that the average WVC is hovering around $6,000 per claim. A Legend Grille Guard is roughly $650.

BULL ELK, AN HOUR AWAY By Craig Nyhus
Lone Star Outdoor News At the H3P Ranch near Cooper in East Texas, you’ll likely see impressive whitetailed deer. You also may see some of the some of the elk herd, the group of scimitar-horned oryx, an axis or fallow deer. As you drive onto the ranch, you’ll notice the well-equipped but unassuming main three-bedroom lodge, three cabins and a new building with a walk-in cooler and cleaning area. Phil Powell bought the ranch six years ago, and changed its name. “I have three daughters,” he said. “All of their names start with an H — Haley, Hanna and Holly. That’s how we came up with the name.” The 640-acre ranch feels like twice that, as heavily wooded areas are surrounded by fields and ponds — several teeming with bass and catfish. “It can be hard to find the animals, even the elk,” Powell said. “They can disappear in the trees.” The whitetails, many the offspring of bred does from top genetics, were born on the ranch and many are reaching impressive maturity.
H3P, along with Lone Star Outdoor News, ran a promotion last fall, offering a bull elk hunt to one lucky winner, chosen from persons who subscribed or renewed to the newspaper within the allotted time period. The drawing, held in early November, was won by Wyndell Gore, of Corsicana, who was reminded to renew his subscription after seeing the promotion. Gore’s hunt took place the weekend of Dec. 14. “We saw some awesome whitetails, and after several hours, finally some elk started to appear out of nowhere,” he said. Gore, who was with his wife, Shea, made a successful shot and had his first bull elk. “It’s an awesome place, and we had a great time,” he said. “I sure would recommend it to anyone.” The H3P (bucksandbirds.com) is a little more than an hour’s drive from Dallas, and Powell hosts exotic and whitetail hunters on a limited basis. Powell, a DSC life member, may be reached at (972) 741-7960.

Buying or selling a ranch? Think Ranch Investments
Since 1982, Ranch Investments has emerged as one of the leading ranch brokerage firms in the state of Texas. Historic sales of 1.4 million acres totaling nearly $1 billion in value have established our prominent place in the market. Initially based in Austin, the primary marketing efforts were focused in the six counties surrounding Austin and the South Texas Brush Country. During the past 10 years, brokers and agent representatives have been added in 12 locations, allowing us to better serve the entire state of Texas. The founder, Kenneth O’Meara, developed a concept that brought together a team of associates with varied backgrounds in farming, ranching and land ownership. Our associates have extensive knowledge in wildlife management and commercial hunting, oil and gas production, row crop and irrigated farming, equine centers, cow, calf and feeder operations as well as real estate development. This enables us to best serve buyers and sellers with their transactions in the most efficient and professional manner. In 2008, John Ed Stepan took over the helm at Ranch Investments and manages the daily operations of the firm. Along with his expert staff, he coordinates print media and internet marketing, works alongside his team of associates to assist them in any way and works directly with clients. As a life member of the Dallas Safari Club, John Ed has supported numerous wildlife conservation efforts over the years. His background is varied and unique including International hunting consultant, game ranch development, commercial hunting operations, rural land development, commercial real estate and mineral production. Adhering to its roots, Ranch Investments is actively engaged in the marketing and acquisition of working farms and ranches. And since 2008, a new set of benefits has become available to our customers. With our network of accountants, attorneys, qualified intermediaries (for 1031 Exchanges) and real estate brokers, we have the team of professionals to assist you in the sale of your property and the reinvestment of the proceeds. Many times we encounter sellers who own property of significant value that has been in the family many years, resulting in a low-cost basis, and the tax implications can be significant. We work to develop a strategy such as utilizing the 1031 Exchange to reinvest the proceeds tax deferred into income-producing properties. On the opposite end of the spectrum is the first-time landowner, whether someone seeking a weekend getaway or a working land investment. We carefully listen to our clients’ objectives, develop a plan and locate the ideal property. After the purchase, we offer a full range of consulting services in ranch development for maximum enjoyment and utilization. Our expert team will assist you in taking an undeveloped piece of property and building lakes, roads, game fences, barns, houses, lodges and runways. Utilizing our network of wildlife biologists, we will develop a plan for the propagation of native and exotic game, migratory and upland game birds. For more than 36 years, Ranch Investments has been trusted by families, foundations, corporations and trusts to represent them in their rural real estate transactions. Our reputation is based on honesty and integrity, so you may rest assured that Ranch Investments will always be by your side.

QUAIL, PHEASANTS IN STYLE AT WCR
Wingshooters wanting to experience quail hunting behind great dogs in thick woods don’t need to travel several states away. After decades of habitat management, Wildcat Creek Quail Hunting Resort has what you need a few hours away in northeast Texas. And you’ll hunt in style, with luxurious facilities and 5-star dining awaiting your return from the hunt. WCR is a family affair and the vision of Ron and Evonne Parker and their sons. Open for more than a decade, the habitat improvements and hard work have paid off. Quail hunters can experience a true timber quail hunt in the heavily wooded fields, with the birds providing challenging shooting as they dart through the trees. Pheasant hunters will enjoy the fields mixed with open areas, woods and water.
“We want the experience to be firstclass but yet not stuffy,” said owner Ron Parker. Located in Red River County near Detroit, the property consists of 1,200 -plus acres that will take hunters back in time. White-tailed deer, feral hog and duck hunts compliment the world-class bird hunting. WCR also has competitionstyle sporting clay stations for parties and corporate events. It’s an experience well worth the short trip, where a memorable quail or pheasant hunting adventure awaits.

Tucked away in the tiny town of Detroit Texas, there is a hidden treasure that is quickly being discovered by hunting enthusiasts around the world, and that place is known as Wildcat Creek Resort. The initial concept was simple - to design and develop one of the most sought after quail plantations in the U.S. After 3 years of precision land management and relentless dedication, WCR opened its doors to the public and quickly put itself on the map. But quail hunting was just the beginning and the Parker family knew that hunters would want a taste for more once they were here. Soon, hog hunting and bass fishing were added to the menu as was a 5 star restaurant that catered not only to guests that were staying at WCR, but special events as well. Much has changed at WCR since those early days. The property that started off only with game trails and overgrown brush has transformed into a hunters’ paradise after years of dedicated land management and vision. Whitetail deer, pheasant hunting and duck hunts with spectacular duck sloughs have been added to the list of incredible hunting opportunities and there is always something new around the corner. And if hunting isn’t your thing, you are still in the right place. Let us take you on a guided tour of our over 1,100 manicured acres through our atv trails and streams, with a good chance of catching a glimpse of something amazing such as turkeys, bald eagles, bobcats, deer and so much more. If you’re looking for a place to host your corporate event, family reunion or retreat, WCR has you covered. We can accommodate the smallest of groups to the largest and handle everything that you may need. We look forward to seeing you. Ron & Evonne Parker

SIMPLIFY YOUR HUNT WITH NIKON’S RANGEFINDING BINOCULARS A deer has stepped into view, and it’s a nice one. How far away is he? There’s no more need to fumble around, looking for that rangefinder that may have fallen out of your pocket or is still in your backpack. And there’s no more need to hang a rangefinder from your neck to avoid that issue. It’s in your hand and you are looking through it — the Nikon LaserForce Rangefinding Binocular. Nikon Sport Optics’ LaserForce 10×42 binocular comes with a built-in, 1,900-yard laser rangefinder. “I tried the prototype and ranged out to 2,100 yards,” said Waylan Owens of Owens Outdoor Sales, who represents Nikon. What is unique about the LaserForce? The glass, brightness levels, speed, size/weight, warranty, and, especially, the price. “This little thing has four brightness levels — you can see the readings in any light and with any background,” Owens said. “And its reaction time is three times faster.” LaserForce features a laser capable of ranging distances from 10-1,900 yards with instantaneous readouts on a crisp OLED display that offers a 4-step brightness adjustment, making it easily readable under any light conditions and against various objects.
Featuring Nikon’s ID (Incline/Decline) Technology to compensate for the effects that slope has on trajectory, LaserForce provides hunters and shooters with the compensated range necessary to make the shot, whether uphill, downhill or on level ground. The glass is top quality at a better price, using ED (Extra-low dispersion) Glass. This superior glass corrects chromatic aberration that causes color fringing for high-resolution, contrast-rich images. The long eye relief design, combined with turn-and-slide rubber eyecups facilitate a custom fit for users’ individual viewing needs, with or without eyeglasses. The new LaserForce rangefinder binocular combines superior optical quality, ergonomic single-hand control, technologically enhanced features and a 100-percent backing with Nikon’s No-Fault Policy. “A lifetime electronic warranty is unheard of,” Owens said. “The European models cost three times as much and don’t provide it.” And it is smaller and lighter than the competition. “It is 30 percent shorter in height and weighs 30 percent less,” Owens said. “It’s a game-changer in rangefinding technology.”

Drawer contents roll out at waist height on smooth rolling, industrialgrade wheels. DECKED lets users load up ATVs, motorcycles, and other heavy items onto the deck while organizing and securing tools, hardware, guns, rods and other gear underneath in the drawers. The DECKED advantage is simple: weatherproof, secure, and ergonomic storage with uncompromised use of the vehicle bed’s payload capacity. Also available are an integrated family of components that enhance the ease and satisfaction of use with their foundational system. From nesting drawer toolboxes like the D-Box and Crossbox to drawer dividers, drawer locks and drawer drain plugs to cargo tie down solutions like Core Trax, DECKED is founded on the basis of modular storage and organization customizable to each owner’s needs. DECKED systems work with most tonneau covers and nearly all canopies enhancing the truck owner’s experience and ability to organize and ergonomically access gear. DECKED is also compatible with vertical van racking systems for total organization. The DECKED system can be installed in nearly every full size pickup truck and cargo van made since the late 1990s, is easy to install, and mounts to the vehicle’s existing tie-downs and attachment points with little to no drilling required.
