The Greatest Hunters’ Convention On The Planet By Jay Cox The days, hours, minutes count down – and suddenly, it’s here! Soon. The doors will open and, once again, hunters will come from all over Texas, from the four corners of the country, from around the world. The 2020 DSC Convention and Sporting Expo begins Jan. 9 at 9 a.m. The theme this year for the 2020 Convention is Heritage. The show is a celebration of the hunting heritage that runs strong in hunters’ hearts and minds. Whether it’s deer season, dry season on the savannah, migration time, it is that hunting heritage that keeps us coming back — to the blind, to the campfire, to the Convention Center. When our hunting mentors took us under their wing, they gave us a gift. At the time, we thought it was merely proper aim, game spotting, studying the wind. But it is more than that, and they knew it. They instilled in us the deep passion for something that humans have always done — keys to a whole way of life and a deeply rooted human tradition. There is something so right about the hunt — something in the stillness just before a well-placed shot, the thrill of rising to the challenge, the satisfaction of providing for the family. Hunting rarely happens without others coming along, joining in, or hearing the stories. Hunters feel compelled to share these skills and opportunities with others. That is how the practice has survived for these centuries — take the hunt, share the harvest, tell the stories, pass on the heritage. It’s just what hunters do. They go hunting and they teach other hunters. If you haven’t yet experienced the DSC Conven-

tion and Sporting Expo, this is the perfect time. The show runs four days, is open to the public, and has something for every type of hunter. The Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in downtown Dallas offers one of the best venues for attendees and exhibitors from all over the world. Plan on spending a whole day, two, even four days. But if you only have two hours, come on over! You will be welcomed by DSC’s Texas hospitality from its more than 400 volunteers —

folks who just love the show and the mission of DSC, who love hunting and love taking care of our 35,000 guests. We can’t wait to welcome you to Heritage! There is a lot to see and hear. 40 YEARS OF ARCTIC ADVENTURES Canada North Outfitting celebrates 40 years in 2020, and is grateful for its incredible partnerships throughout Nunavut. “We are thanking the people of Nunavut for welcoming us into this most astonishing culture,” said President Shane Black. “It is an honor to be on this incredible land and be a part of the Inuit culture and tradition. We want to thank our clients from around the world who put their faith and support in us to provide them with an incredible adventure and bring them home safely.” Incorporated on Oct. 27, 1980, Canada North Outfitting began outfitting for its first adventure hunts with the Inuit of the Canadian Arctic during the spring of 1981. Most of the 20th Century saw the closure of hunting for many Arctic big game species. Only the indigenous Inuit people were permitted to harvest game for subsistence purposes as they had for thousands of years and continue to do so. After decades of sound government legislated wildlife management practices, Arctic wildlife had rebounded from all-time lows that afflicted animals throughout the first half of the 20th century. Canada North pioneered Arctic big game adventure hunting, as CNO was the first outfitting company to operate in communities across Nunavut and the Northwest Territories. “Our partnerships with the best and most experienced local Inuit hunters as guides remain a hallmark of the Canada North Outfitting brand,” Black said.
In 2014, Canada North Outfitting established a new milestone in the company's long and outstanding history. Given its commitment toward the health of Nunavut's wildlife resources and the stewardship for which it entails, CNO created the Arctic Wildlife Research Fund, generating much-needed dollars earmarked for sound scientific research programs. With CNO’s head office situated in Edmonton, Alberta, it also operates regional field offices in Winnipeg, Ottawa and Montreal, all of which are main ports of entry into Canada and gateway cities for travel to operations in the western, central and eastern Arctic, including offices in all three administrative regions in Nunavut. Canada North Outfitting is committed to being a part of the Inuit community, working in partnership to empower the people of Nunavut to live successfully on the land and bringing our clients to understand and appreciate the most incredible place on earth, safely and successfully, and providing them with a comprehensive traditional Arctic experience. It’s more than a hunting adventure, it’s a life experience. We look forward to visiting with you in 2020 and being a part of your Arctic adventure. See us at shows including DSC, Wild Sheep Foundation, Grand Slam Club-Ovis, Safari Club International, the Western Hunting & Conservation Expo or overseas in Dortmund, Germany and Salzburg, Austria.

THE GENEROSITY OF
strangers
Story and photos by Lili Sams The notion that you can still knock on someone's door and go hunting on their property isn’t dead. After four days of hunting public land, a stranger we met at a shooting range ultimately led us to, in our eyes, the perfect Colorado mule deer. We were hunting nestled in the San Juan National Forest. Carson Keys had been chasing mule deer for four years and yet, never had the opportunity to pull the trigger. When he drew a mule deer tag this summer, I brought up the idea of tagging along. “Lili, I’ve thought about it and I’ve decided I would really like you to join me on this adventure,” Carson said. “Oh good, because I’ve already bought the plane tickets,” I replied. When Carson picked me up from the airport, he had already been scouting for two days. We headed to the closest shooting range. Carson stuck up a conversation with a gentleman, Rick Watson, who was helping a couple in the stall next to us, as he was taking them elk hunting. As we were heading out, he asked for Carson’s phone number and said he knew a few landowners if the public hunting wasn’t working out like we’d planned. We exchanged numbers, thanked him and drove off. Within 10 minutes on our first outing, we were in a standoff with a doe at 10 yards. We continued on in search of a mature buck. At the top of a steep ridge, we weaved in and out of cedar and pine trees to overlook agricultural lands. Turkey were all over the place and a bunch of doe, but no shooter bucks. The next morning, Rick texted us saying that he was heading into the woods for elk and couldn't get in touch with any landowners, but wished us the best. Our patience was tested as we sat in the howling wind for five hours. We put in the miles, saw a lot of sign, but the deer were nowhere to be found. We spent the morning of our last day driving up and down county roads, hoping to spot a mule deer, then trying to track down landowners to ask for permission. Our hosts, Craig and Candice Despain, aided in our search. Candice called Carson and said “Come down this way; we’ve spotted a good buck.” Knocking on one door led us to the driveway of a 92-year old veteran, a hunter in his earlier years. We tried everything we could to pursuade him to let us hunt his land. Carson even wrote down rules we would follow on a piece of torn paper, as the landowner was hard

of hearing. To no avail, it was time for another plan. We decided that we would go back to our spot for one last try. That’s when we got the call. Rick said he found a landowner who gave us permission to hunt and asked if we could meet him around 3 p.m. He drove us to a family friend’s ranch. We chatted with him while glassing for deer before he wished us luck and said the landowner, Keith Fassbender, should be home soon. We saw a few doe off in the distance but as the sun was starting to set, so were our hopes on filling Carson’s tag. Realizing what an incredible trip it had been, we agreed if we had to go home right now, it would still be an amazing hunt. A big truck drove down the long driveway, and Keith and Carson had a quick conversation: “Hi, are you Keith? Rick brought us here.” “Yes, I am. Are you seeing anything?” “No, sir.” “All right, let me drop off this truck and then I’ve got a spot to take you. Is there any room in your truck?” As the sun was fading, we loaded up and crept down a windy dirt road. A herd of 20 elk stood along a small creek flowing through the property. I was taken aback by their majestic beauty. “Let’s go a little further,” Keith said. “STOP.” “Lili, is that a buck?” It was so dim, I could barely see the big-bodied muley with my naked eye. I threw up the binoculars. “Oh, yes he is and he’s a good one!” I said. The shot was solid. Four years in the making, Carson got his first mule deer. Not only did Keith grant us permission to hunt his land, he took time to help us find a buck and then insisted on helping butcher the buck and us joining his family for dinner. All they asked in return was to keep in touch and hopefully one day, we could return the generosity to someone else. In a world where people routinely tear others down, it was refreshing to witness people going out of their way to help other hunters. Rick and Keith, both seasoned hunters, are cut from the same cloth. Honest, hardworking men that took time out of their own busy lives to help strangers, just because. In fact, Rick has already invited Carson and I back to hunt elk with him next year. The world could use more men like Rick and Keith.

REVENANT COMBINES ART, TECHNOLOGY AT A PRICE THAT HITS THE MARK Hunters worldwide marvel over them. Bespoke shotguns from craftsmen who spent hundreds of hours hand-sculpting steel and turning rare pieces of walnut into perfectly checkered stocks, turning a firearm into a rare piece of art. They dream of owning one. Then they glance at the price tag, often gasping at the six-figure cost, pass it off as an unaffordable luxury, and move on. Caesar Guerini has turned lifelong hunters’ dreams into a reality with its Revenant shotgun. It’s basically what you would see in a high-end gun costing upward of $100,000, for one-fifth the price, but functionally surpassing its more expensive cousins. Using the most modern production technology and engineering, Ceasar Guerini has made a mostly production shotgun at a level previously only made by hand. “The amazing accomplishment is to take design features that were the exclusive realm of the most expensive handmade shotguns and industrialize them,” said Wes Lang, president of Caesar Guerini USA. “This allows us to accomplish art through the use of technology, making this product accessible to a much larger demographic of hunters and shooters. We are clearly in new territory with this gun.”
The Revenant is a production shotgun that, except for the final engraving, is never touched by hand, yet exhibits the fit, finish, and handling qualities of an English Best smoothbore. Built along the lines of a classic British game gun, the Revenant has solid side ribs, 28-inch barrels, a trim fore-end, and a Woodward-style grip. When it came to engraving, Caesar Guerini turned to world leaders Bottega Giovanelli and Dario Cortini, whose design includes maple leaves and branches, evoking a hunting theme. The laser engraving is handfinished, taking 14 hours per shotgun. It’s not surprising Outdoor Life named the Revenant its 2019 Editors Choice. The Revenant, available in 20 gauge, retails just under $13,000. Models will be on display at Caesar Guerini’s booth at the DSC convention, so stop buy and take a look. And this time, you may not have to walk away.

AUTUMN ANTLERS, TROPHY WHITETAIL IN THE NORTH STAR STATE
It began with a vision to create an experience. Autumn Antlers was founded in 2006 by a group of outdoorsmen who wanted Minnesota to be a place to hunt trophy whitetail deer and more. Since day one, Autumn Antlers has been providing the experience of trophy animals, combined with gourmet meals in a compelling lodge setting with exceptional service. John Monson and Troy Hoekstra purchased the hunting preserve and event center located in Long Prairie, Minnesota in July, and plan to maintain all current offerings, such as guided trophy hunts for whitetail deer, red stag, mouflon ram, elk and fallow deer. And they have now added trophy bison to their list of hunting experiences. “We offer a truly authentic 5-star atmosphere set in the beautiful backwoods of the North Star State,” said Hoekstra. Autumn Antlers is located in central Minnesota, 130 miles northwest of Minneapolis in Long Prairie. “Through the careful management of genetics, herd size and nutrients, we continue to achieve world-class trophy herds that attract hunters from around the world,” Hoekstra said. “No matter where you’re from, we welcome you to Autumn Antlers.” The experience of hunting with Autumn Antlers allows guests to experience all facets of a dream hunt in the heart of nature. Guests have the option of hunting from custom-built, insulated, heated tree stands or in ground blinds. Guests can choose their method of
hunting with Autumn Antlers, whether using bow, rifle, black powder or all three. There are no trophy limits at Autumn Antlers. All trophy animals are scored to Safari Club International standards. BRINGING FUN AND COOL TO HIGH-END JEWELRY
People at the DSC convention notice the Kelly Mitchell Jewelry booth because of the crowd of people usually viewing all of the unique jewelry. Many are women, but by no means all. “I’ve been at the convention for 23 years,” Mitchell said. “I’m a jeweler who is a hunter — these are my people.” Mitchell worked for a South African diamond company throughout her 20s, selling loose diamonds around the globe. After that, she started her own retail operation and now operates her business at the Shop of Highland Park in Dallas. With her team of salespeople and jewelry designers, Kelly Mitchell Jewelry offers several unique collections, and also works with clients to design and create their dream jewelry pieces. From a preliminary sketch to the final product created by an in-house master jeweler, all that is left is for you to cherish your custom design for years to come. If designs from around the world pique your interest, you’ll see items from the top designers in Rome, Milan, Florence, Madrid, Paris, Istanbul and Lebanon. And from black tie to everyday wear, Kelly Mitchell Jewelry has you covered. At DSC, Mitchell said diamond studs, pendants and bracelets are the most popular, along with Rolex watches for the men. And the company’s safari collection is inspired from visions of Africa. “As a luxury business dealer, we get to know a lot of people,” Mitchell said. “It’s what is so great about the convention — we get to catch up with all the people we’ve come to know over the years — I wouldn’t miss it!” So when you are cruising the aisles and see the crowd at the Kelly Mitchell Jewelry booth, be sure to stop by and take a look. It’s fun and friendly, and you might find just what you have always been looking for.

NAMIBIAN ADVENTURE FROM A CLIENT’S PERSPECTIVE Kalahari Safari was an epic adventure! My husband, Mike, signed up for the hunt at the Dallas Safari Club Show and asked if I would like to go with him to Kalahari Safari in Namibia and do some photography. I went knowing this was a “hunting trip,” which basically means the hunts come first and if I get a shot of something along the way, I am doing good. Not being my first tagalong, my expectations were to ride along, hike, and participate, and if I did not get in the way, I would get some photography done. My first inclination that this was not a typical hunting trip was the beautiful lodge. It was magnificent with all of the “little things” that set it apart as phenomenal. Crisp white linens on the beds with weighted comforters. Soaps, shampoos and lotions from the spa smelled wonderful and worked great. The décor was done with such careful detail that let you know you were in Africa, but made you feel at home. Each day we rose early and rode out in the Land Cruisers on the beautiful 45,000-acre privately owned property just two hours from Windhoek. The trackers would spot game, and then the hiking, tracking and hunting would follow. The hunting was first class. Every hunter had the
opportunity to be successful. After a kill, the animals were treated with dignity and respect. Owner Janneman Brand is an expert photographer and the animals would be cleaned up and set up in a very precise manner with the hunter to get the perfect photo. Janneman knew that I wanted to get some photos and he took great care in making sure I was allowed time and opportunity to get good shots. I never felt like I was tagging along. I felt as though we were all part of a group that wanted everyone to be happy each and every day. The food needs a 12-page review all on its own. Kalahari Safari could stand alone as a foody destination. I have traveled and dined at many fine restaurants. Aldalene Brand’s gourmet touch in the kitchen is unsurpassed — not only in taste, but in presentation. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were world class. They prepared game meat with fresh vegetables, sauces, homemade breads, and creative culinary twists. As a gal that does not generally eat game, I was pleasantly surprised at the food. I ate kudu, black wildebeest, springbok and venison prepared in amazing ways and loved it. Each dinner was followed by a wonderful dessert. Or as Janneman said, “If there is a spoon on the table above your plate, there is hope!”
Each evening we gathered around the dinner table with some delicious South African red wine. We all talked about the day, told funny stories, laughed and genuinely had the perfect ending to each day. The staff was so very kind, from the trackers to the kitchen staff. It was a type of kindness that only comes from leadership that emulates kindness by example, and instills a heart of service for others. I feel that we came to Kalahari Safari as strangers and left as good friends. My husband summed it up best when he told me, “A man like Janneman Brand is very rare.” —Danette Benton

THE BIGGEST FAMILY REUNION ON THE PLANET By Larry Weishuhn The line leading into the main convention hall was crowded, to say the least. Up ahead I saw an acquaintance. He waved me forward. As we shook hands, he said, “I thought you’d already be inside by now.” I smiled and explained I had been busy greeting the more than 1,000 exhibitors at DSC’s early morning Exhibitor Breakfast, visiting with those from throughout the world who exhibited at our annual convention, the backbone of the world’s greatest hunter/conservation show. “Where you headed first?” I asked but suspected he had a plan laid out to visit specific outfitters, and stop by the Ruger and Hornady booths. “I want to do a pronghorn hunt this fall and take my wife with me on a trip to Spain,” he replied. “She’ll tour while I hunt ibex.” His wife was still at the hotel, but would be over later in the morning. “She’s bringing several friends we invited to this year’s convention,” my friend said. “That bunch is interested in hunts here in North America and maybe a dove shoot in Argentina. They’re also looking at going
Cameron Kuenzer
to Africa for their first time. I told them this is the place, because only the best outfitters and PHs are here at the convention.” The group was set up to meet with several people who have been to Africa numerous times. “They can steer them in directions as far as PHs are concerned,” my friend said. “Saturday my son, daughter and her boyfriend will be here. Remember, you met them here about eight or nine years ago. They insist on coming back every year. “You going to be on the floor, at a booth, or on the DSC Conservation Stage?” I replied all those places and more. “Blake Barnett and I are helping Trijicon introduce over a hundred new products for starters here at the show,” I said. “Then I’ll spend some time at the Ruger booth, the Ripcord booth and then after lunch I’ll be on the stage, this year sponsored by Trijicon, in the back at the hall for our annual, ‘Meet the Outdoor Legends’ panel. “This year we have Boddington, Shockey, Spomer, Foulkrod and Massaro. And, you know our emcee, Billy Kinder, always brings on a couple special guests. If the audience has as much fun as we do, they’ll have a
blast.” Several really great speakers and discussions will be on the stage throughout Saturday of the convention. “Stop by,” I said, and my friend nodded, as did several others who were standing around, listening to our conversation. We talked about some of the seminars and things going on daily at the show. “You here for all four days?” I asked. “There simply isn’t enough time to see all I want to in just a day, yep, all four days,” he said. “I love all the booths and exhibits, and it seems like all my friends and many of my business associates attend the convention. I get a tremendous amount of visiting done, book a hunt or fishing trip or two, look at the best guns, optics, hunting equipment in the world, and do a bunch of dreaming! “By the way, I need to ask you later about a couple of hunts on the nightly auctions,” he said, adding after showing a big grin. “When you get right down to it, the annual DSC convention is a like a huge family reunion. Only a whole lot more fun!”
NEVER SETTLE Texas Hunter Products' Wrangler Hide-A-Way Camo Hunting Blinds are loaded with features, and were designed to meet the needs of demanding hunters who won’t settle for anything less than the best. Texas Hunter’s Wrangler blinds lead the field in two very important features in deer blinds: a product that is maintenance-free and one that maximizes game visibility while you remain hidden from the field of view. The heart of the Wrangler blind is its 5’x7’ octagonal shape and maintenance-free 20-gauge aluminum exterior with a rigid internal steel frame. From the TrueTimber Camo pattern to the powder-coated steel staircases with handrails, no detail was left unrefined. The blinds are outfitted with their exclusive HideA-Way Dual Window System — the ultimate hunting blind concealment system. Hunters can choose two different window configurations: Rifle and Gun windows or Rifle and Vertical Bow windows. The unique window system consists of windows that open to the inside, making cleaning both sides easy. A double-track silent slide concealment system was designed for the outside of the windows — a Texas Hunter Products exclusive. Dark bronze Plexiglas concealment panels slide past each other in the two tracks, allowing hunters to create desired shooting ports. The panels can be positioned to completely hide the hunter from the field of view, as well as block incoming sunlight. All windows are finished with a weather-strip frame providing a scent-tight structure that seals out the elements — and insects. Texas Hunter’s Hide-A-Way Wrangler Camo Blinds offer plenty of room for multiple hunters and include fully-carpeted ceiling and walls to dampen the sound both inside and outside of the blind. Seven windows

on every angle offer nearly 360 degrees of visibility. Texas Hunter’s Wrangler Blinds feature a one-piece galvanized roof with steel roof supports and no seams — for zero leaks or rust. Plus, the high-strength composite floor will never rot or need maintenance. Included with every Wrangler blind is Texas Hunter’s Sportsman's Deer Blind Shelf and Shooting Rest. This full-featured accessory provides solid support for more accurate shots. The shelf features two swivel shooting rests that can be placed in any of four positions across the width of the shelf for easy shots. The Texas Hunter Shooters Shelf — which is sold separately and fits most any deer blind — also includes three cupholders and built-in rifle/bow rests on each end which double as convenient hooks for hanging flashlights and binoculars. A universal camera mount is also included that fits most range finders, cameras or video cameras. A handy cell phone holder quickly attaches to the camera mount, which can be attached in 10 different positions along the shelf for the ideal camera angle during the hunt. Texas Hunter’s Wrangler Blinds are available in three height configurations. A ground blind features 7-inch legs to keep the blind elevated off the ground. There are also 4-foot and 8-foot powder-coated steel tower

options that include welded staircases and full-height handrails. When hunting and land management becomes a passion, only the best hunting gear will do. PRICING LAND AND CHOOSING A BROKER Two of the most challenging aspects of selling farm or ranch land is knowing how to price it correctly and choosing a brokerage firm or salesman to help you get it sold. As a seller of land, pricing the property is the most crucial decision that you will encounter, and can often be controlled by emotion rather than logic. Sellers will often develop an idea based on sale numbers they have heard in the general area or rumors of amounts of sales of other properties. Usually, this information is missing important details of the transaction, which affected the price. Examples of these range from mineral, water, and wind energy rights, structural improvements, fence and water quality, livestock, and other amenities that neighboring land may or may not include in the sale that would significantly vary their land value compared with yours. Sellers often feel that their property is worth more than other area properties and want their price to reflect the highest area sale. While we understand this, we must view the property at its true value as a buyer sees it, with no emotional attachment. In these situations, we cannot in good faith take the listing because we would not be able to deliver a qualified buyer at the inflated price a seller wants to use. Therefore, the property most likely will just sit on the market without anyone looking at it. We have found that the process of selling
land is more often derailed by poor pricing strategies than any other factor. Researching brokers is another make-orbreak decision. While we all know realtors, its best to use a true land broker over a friend or residential realtor trying to branch out. Their lack of experience and knowledge will likely cause frustration and lower profits, if your property sells at all. We see it quite frequently where these realtors will take a listing at any price, no matter how unrealistic, and the property sits on the market for years. We encourage you to interview a few professional land brokers to provide a valuation of your property and their services. The most successful agents will provide accurate valuations because they don’t need to “buy a listing.” We invest a substantial amount of time, effort and money into marketing and selling properties, so it is a considerable waste if the property does not sell. The first several months on the market is the most critical period of the entire listing, and you only get this opportunity once. The land market has changed substantially over the years. Investors have more market information available to them and more properties are on the market. If your goal is to sell your property for the most money possible, remember you must put your emotions aside, do your research and get advice from knowledgeable land brokers like Chas. S. Middleton and Son.

FIREARMS AND FRIENDLY SKIES: LOOK TO THE TRAVEL AGENCY FOR HUNTING ENTHUSIASTS Making travel arrangements for trips abroad can be cumbersome, given today’s heightened world of security. Policies and procedures vary by country, upon arrival and departure, even if you are just making a transfer within the country. For these reasons, many travelers opt to let professional travel companies take the worry out of making the arrangements. Having experts prepare your firearms documents, based on your specific needs, safeguards you from any obstacles you may face along the way. The intricacies of taking firearms across national borders can prove challenging. It’s important to comply with all local, state and international laws concerning possession and exportation, which vary by region. Baggage preparation and understanding items to declare, and forms to complete, are among some of the details to consider. The traveler or agent must file the appropriate documentation, permits and certifications needed in advance in order to have them ready for visual inspection at the time of departure. Airlines have their own set of regulations. Specific firearm description during the flight reservation process (at the time of booking) is also critical to ensuring the firearms are boarded on the flight. As you prepare for your time aboard,
you don’t want to get hung up on checking for last-minute regulation changes or deciphering what documents, forms and permits are required. TWG. travel actively monitors regulation updates for a wide array of countries and airlines. They provide firearm document preparation and guidance for their travelers. With more than 10 years of successfully helping clients travel with guns, their seasoned agents understand what is needed to get you and your firearms where they need to be at all times. In addition to Dallas Safari Club, TWG.travel will be at the conventions of Houston Safari Club (Booth 204) GSCO Slam Quest (Booth 531) and SCI (Booth 1372).

B&B TAXIDERMY, A FAMILY LEGACY Since 1983, Mike and Jo Baird have been building a family business. It was Mike’s love of animals that started this wild journey. Mike first learned about taxidermy while in high school where he was able to take a taxidermy class. He worked many odd jobs, but nothing struck his passion like taxidermy. So, with Jo, the couple took a huge leap of faith and opened their first taxidermy shop. The shop started out as a one-man operation, and within a few years, they were able to hire their first employee, Fernando Nava, who still works at B&B Taxidermy. Now, B&B Taxidermy has 15 employees, including Mike and Jo’s son, Frank Baird, and two of their nephews, Kevin Stark and Chris Middleton. What began as a small shop has become a huge operation that specializes in African, North American and exotic mounts, as well as designing and creating trophy rooms. Many of their customers have turned into lifetime friends, and they have been lucky to be able to share all of this with their son. Frank Baird was born into taxidermy

and even took his first steps at the shop. Frank has an exceptional knowledge of animals, which he learned about during his eight trips to Africa and two trips to New Zealand. Frank was a winner of the Houston Safari Club Youth Hunter of the Year award and now is proudly passing the tradition of his love for hunting to his son, Hunter, who will hopefully one day also take on a role in B&B Taxidermy. Originality and creativity is a top priority at B&B Taxidermy. Mike and Frank are always looking at new ways to mount your trophies and preserve the memories of your hunts, and are always willing to work with you to bring your visions and dreams alive. Stop by B&B Taxidermy’s showroom at 11030 Jones Road West in Houston to view the exceptional work of Mike, Frank and staff.

Testing the Seneca Dragon Claw 500cc air rifle
Adventure’s calling. Answer it with something completely different.
If you’re looking for a decidedly different way to answer adventure’s call, the Seneca Dragon Claw 500cc precharged pneumatic (PCP) air rifle might just become your favorite hunting firearm’s heir apparent. Capable of handling not only conventional, metallic projectiles, the Seneca Dragon Claw can also hurl specialized air bolts downrange at velocities up to 500 FPS, with muzzle energies as high as 230 FPE. You are effectively turning the air rifle into a powerful, deadly accurate air-powered crossbow!

”
It has been more than a year since the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department legalized the use of pre-charged pneumatic air guns to hunt game animals. The Seneca Dragon Claw .50 cal air rifle from Air Venturi is one these air guns, capable of shooting a variety of projectiles, including arrows. The air rifle and accessories arrived well packed and ready for testing. The nicely appointed rifle has a rich blue barrel and air tanks that contrast nicely with the alloy receiver and hardwood stock. Iron sights were installed from the factory; however, the rear sight fixture was removed to make room for a Mantis 4-12x40 AO mil-dot scope. The scope is necessary for better accuracy during testing. The sight plane of the fixed sights is comfortable and could be quite useful on this short-range weapon. The rifle has dual air tanks that run parallel with the barrel, similar in appearance to an over/under shotgun. When pressurized, the tanks (500cc total capacity) will hold approximately 3,000 psi of compressed air. The tanks were charged from a “scuba-tank” type cylinder, which was filled at a local dive shop for approximately $10. The air chambers are charged using a quick-release nipple located on the front of the lower tank. The use of gloves and safety glasses is recommended when charging the air rifle due to the extreme pressures involved. Discharging the rifle is an easy affair. Once the tanks have been fully charged, simply slide the breech shield forward and insert a projectile. It is important that the projectile is pushed forward all the way to battery, otherwise the bullet will not form a good seal in the chamber and velocity and accuracy will be diminished. Slide the breech cover to the closed position and pull the charging handle to the desired power level, then depress the trigger guard mounted safety and the rifle is ready to discharge. The rifle is well balanced and the Monte Carlo style stock makes for easy scope alignment. Recoil from the 9.4-pound rifle is almost nonexistent; however, there is a report of high-pressure air escaping the muzzle and hearing protection is advised. Three different lead bullets were selected for the testing, a 177 grain round ball, a 185 grain hollow point, and a 336
DALLAS SAFARI CLUB CONVENTION & SPORTING EXPO 2020
Lone Star Outdoor News
grain flat nose (FN). Testing was done at 50 yards and chronographed 8 feet from the muzzle. The tanks were charged to maximum pressure with the power level set to high for all shots fired. The rifle has a high and low power setting, which is selected by pulling the charging handle. A built-in pressure gauge is located under the forearm to help monitor air usage. Testing showed that after eight shots, velocity and accuracy will drop significantly. Accuracy was much better in the high power mode, which uses more air, so plan on recharging the air cylinders after multiple shots to maintain performance. Test firing results: Velocity and energy at muzzle (5 shot average): 177 Round Ball: 560 fps, 123 ft/lbs 185 Hollow Point: 668 fps, 183 ft/lbs 336 Flat Nose: 541 fps, 218 ft/lbs Group Size results at 50 yards (3 shot average): 177 Round Ball: 2.051” 185 Hollow Point: 2.765” 336 Flat Nose: .995” TPWD regulations state the precharged pneumatic air guns must fire a projectile of at least .30 caliber in diameter and at least 150 grains in weight with a minimum muzzle velocity of 800 feet per second or any combination of bullet weight and muzzle velocity that produces muzzle energy of at least 215 foot pounds of energy. The only bullet tested meeting this requirement for game animals in Texas is the 336 grain FN, which coincidentally has the best accuracy and highest energy. This bullet also showed wonderful expansion when hitting a steel plate at 50 yards — almost 2.5 times the original diameter. This writer believes the shooter should limit shots on big game to 50 yards to ensure a humane kill. Any longer distances, the bullet will be shedding too much velocity and energy to effectively dispatch the animal. The Seneca Dragon Claw is a versatile, well-made rifle with a fit and finish sure to please even the most discriminating shooter, and with a MSRP of $765 (price as tested $880) it will likely be in the budget for those in search of a modern air gun.

CUSTOM BUILD YOUR OWN SAKO 85 RIFLE Who doesn’t enjoy a trip into the world’s finest sporting good store? The Beretta Gallery, a destination among all outdoor enthusiasts, is known especially for its gun selection. The Beretta Gallery recently installed programming in the middle of their showroom to give folks the opportunity to completely customize their own Sako 85. For the completely custom route, you start the process by choosing the caliber and stock. The stock model will automatically change depending on which caliber you select. Models include Bavarian Carbine, Deluxe and Prestige, to name a few. Next, to the fun part — the wood grain, engraving and metal. Chose the high-grade stock quality for that classic and refined look. You can flip through highquality images that show which each selection will look like. If going full-custom intimidates
you, there is an option to filter by guns they already make, based on your specific needs. There are several criteria, and you can refine the search by caliber or features such as left-handed. “Say you want a 6.5 Creedmore for Texas whitetail, or maybe you are looking for something bigger that you can take on your African safari like a .375 or .450,” Corey Mays of Beretta said. “The system filters out those calibers and shows you what Sako already makes. Getting a gun for your specific needs has never been easier to find.” After all the bells and whistles have been picked out, a code is presented under the gun name. Take that code to one of the guys and they can order the gun for you. It takes about eight months for one of the custom guns, faster for guns they have in stock. Don’t live in Dallas? No problem. You can find your gun online at custom.sako.fi and call the store with the code.

EXPERIENCE THE THRILL OF THE HUNT WITH BUSH AFRICA SAFARIS
CUSTOMIZED FOR PERFORMANCE
Over 38 years in business serving the hunting and shooting communities – from ammunition, gunsmithing, and gun repair to a full-line of custom firearms and everything in between. Come see us at Booth #4201.
It was the day of arrival. The cruiser has been unpacked, rifles checked and hunting gear put together. The whole afternoon was available for Scalk van Heerden and his client, but they could not contain their excitement. The client has been dreaming about hunting a buffalo all his life. This is it! We are in the South Luangwa region of Zambia. This is cat country, and good buffalo country. The river forest along the river is thick, with giant trees and thick undergrowth. Perfect habitat for bushbuck, and with it comes the cats. The interior, before it opens up to a giant Mopanie veld, is dotted with open marshes and lagoons, perfect areas for the herds of buffalo to graze. Small groups of puku, waterbuck, roan antelope and impala share these with them. We decide to go for a drive for the last few hours before nightfall. About 10 miles from camp, I turn off from the main road. “Let’s have a look at the Malamba Lagoon, always something to see there,” I said. “Bwana, Bwana, buffalo!” The excitement from the trackers in the back is contagious. The client eagerly puts his ammo belt on and swiftly takes two bullets out of it and drops them in his .450-400. This is what he has been waiting for! The herd was feeding close to the edge of the reeds on the western side of the lagoon. We circle it and enter the reeds, the wind in our face. Once we clear the 100 yards of thick grass and reeds, we should be within shooting distance. Halfway through our stalk the reeds open up a little. A buffalo cow lifts her head and looks straight at us. “Stay still,” I whisper. We all see it, about 30 yards from us. A leopard comes sneaking through the cover. It stops, lifts its head and has a long hard look at us, not knowing what
we are. We are hunkered down, staying dead still. The leopard starts crouching, pointing into a stalk. I move my arms a little, just enough for the big cat to realize we are humans, without risking the buffalo will detect us. The spotted cat crouched more and disappeared faster than it appeared. We see glimpses of it coming through the grass toward us, slowly. It disappears again and we all wait anxiously. I order the group to get up, stay close, rifles pointed where we saw it last. I can see the buffalo getting uneasy and the closest part of the herd start to move away. We get up and back up, rifles ready. The leopard, disappointed by its prey, appears 7 yards from us. ‘’I’m going to shoot,” the customer said. “No, no, I said. The leopard looks, gets up, almost embarrassed by its error and disappears in the long grass. Bush Africa Safaris has been operating from its main camp in the Northern Limpopo region of South Africa. As archery specialists, the serious trophy hunter and family alike has visited us for the past 25 years with great success. Our main area might be one of the most diversified habitat systems in Africa, with many species out of the main camp. We offer quality, handpicked areas across southern Africa in conjunction with some colleagues, taking our clients on successful adventures to prime hunting areas. With fantastic hard to find opportunities, great service and seasoned professionals, you owe it to yourself to come and see what we have to offer. Until we hunt together… —Scalk van Heerden

DECKED FOR THE JOB Made in the USA and engineered in Detroit, DECKED revolutionizes how your truck bed works for you. DECKED allows you to store and organize your hunting gear, guns, tools, rescue gear and about anything else that is rattling around in the bed or cluttering the cab of your truck, and still have full use of the truck’s bed. With two full bed-length drawers, both secure and weatherproof, boasting a 200-pound per drawer payload, you can store your guns, ammo, bow, and all of your other gear out of sight and out of mind. The surface of the DECKED system has a 2,000-pound payload, which is the same payload of a half-ton pickup, so you can drive your ATV up onto it while keeping all of your hunting gear completely out of the way and ready to roll as soon as you are. DECKED drawers roll smoothly on sealed bearing wheels and actually roll smoother the heavier they are loaded with gear and tools. This clever system is made from galvanized and stainless steel and injection molded, high-density polyethylene making it impervious to the elements and intense UV exposure. The system can be easily assembled with a handful of common tools (socket set, box wrench, screw drivers, hex drivers) and does not require any drilling into your truck bed, as it attaches directly to the bed’s cargo tiedowns. Should you want to remove the system, it comes out in three pieces in 15-20 minutes and can be neatly stacked in the corner of your garage. DECKED has been selling its drawer system for more than five years, and has released a handy set of accessories that enhance the modular organization and functional use of the system. The D-Box and CrossBox are waterproof, highly durable
gear boxes designed to nest efficiently in the drawers. Customers can store their gear or tools by category and move them in and out as the use of the truck or demands of the day change. Hunting waterfowl one day and predators the next? No problem, take out the box with your calls and shells and drop in the one with your optics and preferred ammo in a matter of seconds. For added security, drawer locks can be added to the drawers. Drain plugs make washing out the drawers and draining them a piece of cake (or should you decide to fill them up with cold ones and ice, you can drain them out in a matter of seconds). For tying down boxes or other cargo, mount a set of Core Trax tie-downs to the deck of the system. Their adjustable load locks with a 500-pound load rating can be used with ratchet straps or bungies to keep your cargo from sliding around. DECKED is available for nearly every full-size and midsize truck and cargo van on the road since the early 2000s and is backed with a three-year warranty.

SET YOUR DEER UP FOR SUCCESS Feeding your deer herd during and after rut in the fall and winter paves the way for your bucks, does, and fawns. With fewer hours of daylight in the fall and winter, the deer may not be seen at the feeders, but they will utilize the nutrition if available. Feeding bucks through winter Even though bucks are in hard rack and achieved their antler size for the year, they can lose 10-30 percent of their body weight due to increased activity and decreased food intake during the rut and subsequent winter. Feeding bucks during the fall and winter allows bucks to regain weight they may have lost during the rut. Bucks entering the spring in good body condition can utilize the nutrients they consume for antler growth rather than merely regaining the weight they lost the previous season. Fall and winter feeding does not need to be the high protein diets that allowed the deer to reach their genetic potential for antler growth. A well-balanced diet of 16-percent protein and added fat and minerals to support reproduction is of greater benefit than just corn during this time of year.

Feeding does through winter After a summer of producing milk for one to three fawns, a doe’s body weight and body condition has decreased. Just like the bucks, regaining the lost weight and condition is critical to does for reproductive success and for surviving the winter. A study conducted at Washington State University in mule deer showed that digestibility energy intake the month prior to the breeding season impacted pregnancy rate and rate of twinning. Additionally, does with greater body fat prior to the breeding season had greater rates of twinning. Benefits of winter feeding for fawns Does in good body condition during gestation were found to produce heavier and a greater number of fawns than does in poor body condition. Fawns with low birth weights have a greater chance of mortality within the first week of life. Additionally, researchers are evaluating the link between the food available to does during gestation and their fawns’ future performance. Fawns born in early and late summer may benefit from fall feeding. The fawns born early in the summer are just being weaned in early fall and depending on forage
availability would benefit from supplemental feeding. Likewise, fawns born late in the summer may benefit from supplemental feeding in the fall and winter to achieve an adequate body size to survive the winter. In both cases, the fawns have watched their does consume the supplemental feed and have started nibbling it as well. Weaning is a period of stress and having an additional source of nutrition, like supplemental feed, supports the fawns’ needs during this period of transition. The importance of supplemental feeding in the spring and summer to support antler growth is a common practice. Continuing to feed deer in the fall and winter is also important to support the nutrient requirements of all classes of deer to support their body weight and body condition to continue to have a successful program the following year. If you have questions on setting up a supplemental feeding program on your property, feel free to reach out to Scott Hohensee, wildlife specialist at Purina Mills at SDHohensee@LandoLakes.com or visit your local Purina Dealer. BUILDING SKILLS, CHARACTER AND MEMORIES FOR TOMORROW’S OUTDOORS
For 16 years, Outdoor Texas Camps has provided girls and boys from around the country, aged 9-16, with the opportunity to build skills, character and memories in the outdoors. The goal of OTC has always been to develop a detailed course curriculum, executed in a professional manner by some of the most experienced outdoor instructors in their respective fields, at some of the best public and private locations in Texas while maintaining a safe, fun environment. Outdoor Texas Camps currently offers eight general and specialty outdoor camps in Texas. The General Outdoor Activity Camps include instruction in riflery and handguns, trap and skeet, archery, camping and survival, game scoring, game calling, blood trailing, fishing, fly-fishing and fly-tying, and game management and conservation. Specialty Camps focus on bass fishing and fly-fishing, bow hunting and saltwater fishing. In addition, all
campers leave camp with their hunter’s education course certification, if needed. To accomplish all this, Outdoor Texas Camps has set standards high enough to not only satisfy the campers and their parents, but the outdoor industry as well. While most summer camps strive to become larger and larger, with many camps hosting hundreds of campers at each session, Outdoor Texas Camps continues to believe that the goals set forth above are far more attainable with no more than 24 campers per camp. Visit us at DSC’s Youth Wildlife Conservation Area in the back righthand corner, next to the Conservation Stage and Food Court, January 9-12.

TO RESTORE OR NOT TO RESTORE
This is the foundational question that owners of classic firearms ask themselves when considering what could become a journey to revitalize, or perhaps even resurrect, that heirloom or collectible. A big part of what we do at Turnbull Restoration is help our customers understand all the ins and outs of firearm restoration. It may surprise some how much restoration work we decline. That’s because helping our customers arrive at the decision that’s right for them is what’s most important to us. Here are some of the questions we cover when discussing the pros and cons of firearm restoration: • Rarity Is the firearm rare or unique? If so, is it in the correct configuration, or have pieces and parts been incorrectly replaced or altered over the years? If yes, then it’s best to restore it back to its original configuration. Otherwise, leave it as it is. • History Does it have specific, historical importance? If so, can that be proven with documentation? Probably best to leave it alone then. Again, if it has parts that have been incorrectly replaced or altered, it may be best to restore it back to its original configuration. • Condition In what condition is the firearm? If it’s in very good condition, leave it. If it’s not even functioning, or it’s missing important parts, then we might decline the restoration because it’ll be too expensive to restore it. • Investment vs. sentiment Would the cost of restoration outpace the value of the restored firearm? If so, it’s up to you whether you want to restore it or not. If it has a lot of personal value, then you might choose to restore it even if you can’t recoup your investment. • Longevity Do you want the ability to pass down your firearm to future generations? Then it’s probably a good idea to restore it. Restoration improves functioning and condition, effectively resetting the clock on the life of your firearm. We hope these pointers help. Visit us at the convention along with the American Custom Gunsmiths Guild on Custom Gunmakers Row. Doug Turnbull is onhand and happy to answer your classic firearm restoration questions and provide no-cost, no-obligation quotes. Questions after the convention? Our gunsmiths and estimators are at your service, so give us a call or send an email.

TAKING CARE OF EVERYTHING FOR YOUR SAFARI
Booking a safari can be a daunting experience, especially on the hunter’s first trip. Infinito Safaris takes the stress away with a hands-on, one-stop safari experience. Infinito Safaris offers hunts in South Africa and Tanzania, where hunters experience fair chase hunts for both dangerous and plains game. The all-inclusive pricing structure takes the guesswork away. The owner-operated Infinito Taxidermy Service offers mounting of your trophies in its taxidermy studio, hair-on tanning of hides and dip-and-pack service to your taxidermist. The shipping service provides a budget-friendly option by sea freight or air. In South Africa, Infinito operates in six of the nine provinces with access to private and government land that gives visiting hunters the opportunity of a fair chase African safari for both plains and dangerous game. In Tanzania, hunters often are concerned about unexpected costs. With Infinito Safaris all-inclusive pricing system, those concerns are a thing of the past. Infinito leases its own two blocks in partnership with Tanzanian national Ivan Mjengwa, with one-million acres of unspoiled wilderness. Described as its own Garden of Eden, the Big Four — leopard, lion, buffalo and elephant — roam freely in huge numbers. One of less than 10 percent of outfitters that provide an all-inclusive safari experience from the day of booking until your trophies are exported, Infinito Safaris will take charge of the entire process. Even better, the office is USA-based, meaning credit cards are accepted, as well as checks and bank transfers. With Charl and Erika van Rooyen and their team of safari specialists, you’ll receive an affordable and accessible safari experience, with the stress removed.

THE ART OF THE “BEST” LONDON GUN, SINCE 1814 “I could not live without the whiff of rifle smoke.” James Purdey, 1784–1863 Since 1814, James Purdey & Sons has been perfecting the art of the “Best” London gun, making the finest-quality shotguns, rifles and shooting equipment. When a customer orders a handcrafted Purdey gun, they are joining a tradition of gunmaking excellence that spans over two centuries. The attention to detail and craftsmanship of this iconic British company also reflects in their range of clothing and accessories that complement the lifestyle of any passionate shooter. Purdey best guns have always been crafted in London, and originally the workshop and showroom were one and the same; first in Princes Street off Leicester Square and, from 1826, at 314 1/2 Oxford Street — the former premises of that “king of gunmaking” Joseph Manton, under whom James Purdey first honed his skills. Purdey acquired the lease to their first dedicated workshop in 1881. In the 130 years since then, Purdey gunmaking has remained based in West London. It is within our workshops where the craftsmen and women hand down skills, often from generation to generation of the same family, that the Purdey legacy is truly maintained. A Purdey gun is so much more than just a beautiful heirloom, it is the result of 200 years of passion for excellence.
During the time it takes to build a Purdey gun, it passes through seven distinct craftsmanship stages: barrels, actions, locks and triggers, ejectors, stocking, engraving and finishing. Although craftsmanship and manufacturing has evolved, the design of our best London guns has changed only a little over the last century. One of the joys of owning a Purdey is the knowledge that, from the very first fitting, every element of the gun has been made entirely to your personal specifications. When placing your order for a Purdey gun, you set in train a process of handcrafting that may take more than 1,000 craft hours and 18 months to two years to complete. All our best guns and rifles are handmade in the Purdey workshop in Hammersmith, London. Start your journey now and visit our booth at the Dallas Safari Club Convention to speak with a member of our gun team or browse our range of bespoke guns and rifles. The team will be delighted to welcome you to the Purdey Booth No. 4237, Hall F.

GIANT PEACOCK BASS IN ULTRA-REMOTE LOCATION Under an exclusive agreement with the Amazon Indigenous tribal association, “Ahko Iwi,” Acute Angling operated its first full-scale fishing season on the wild and remote Rio Curicuriari this past fall. We began on a limited, six-week scale in order to fully ascertain the river’s flood-pulse characteristics and its optimal season and to ensure that we could handle any surprises on our new floating hotel’s maiden voyage. The results were great on all fronts. In fact, they were beyond our wildest expectations. The fishing? How does 45 peacocks over 20 pounds sound? All in six weeks with eight anglers each week! How does a 27-pound monster and two new IGFA lineclass records sound? How does an unexpected abundance of several species of giant catfish (some large enough to spool our angler’s peacock rods) sound? The key fishing takeaway was unmistakable — there are huge fish here! After our initial exploratory trip in 2018, we began to think about the best way to access this fishery in 2019. Designing our new accommodation posed a complex challenge. First, it had to get there — through 90 miles of rocks and rapids. Then, it needed to be able to navigate narrow, shallow regions, so that we could access the full length of it. Finally, it had to provide a high level of comfort and luxury in a remote and isolated wilderness. Where to start? At the bottom, of course — with hull design. We solved both problems with a modified, steel barge-type hull that turned out to be super-resistant to the rough stuff while

drafting a remarkably shallow 16 inches, fully loaded. Comfort and luxury? Well, we’re pretty good at that, so we simply designed our superstructure to be what our idea of a fully functioning floating hotel for an exclusive eight-person assemblage should be. Air-conditioned private cabins, king-size couples suites, an elegant dining area, a roomy lounge and a fully-stocked open-air bar with an expert bartender. Our first six groups unanimously loved the Adventurer’s comfort and ambience. You’ll avoid the rough waters by arriving at the luxurious Blackwater Adventurer on a supersafe Cessna Caravan floatplane. Space remains for this coming fall, 2020. Join us in pursuit of world-record class peacock bass on our Amazon flagship.

BUYING OR SELLING A RANCH? THINK RANCH INVESTMENTS Since 1982, Ranch Investments has emerged as one of the leading ranch brokerage firms in the state of Texas. Historic sales of 1.4 million acres totaling nearly $1 billion in value have established our prominent place in the market. Initially based in Austin, the company's primary marketing efforts were focused in the six counties surrounding Austin and the South Texas Brush Country. During the past 10 years, brokers and agent representatives have been added in 12 locations, allowing us to better serve the entire state of Texas. The founder, Kenneth O’Meara, developed a concept that brought together a team of associates with varied backgrounds in farming, ranching and land ownership. Our associates have extensive knowledge in wildlife management and commercial hunting, oil and gas production, row crop and irrigated farming, equine centers, cow, calf and feeder operations as well as real estate development. This enables us to best serve buyers and sellers with their transactions in the most efficient and professional manner. In 2008, John Ed Stepan took over the helm at Ranch Investments and manages the daily operations of the

firm. Along with his expert staff, he coordinates print media and Internet marketing, works alongside his team of associates to assist them in any way and works directly with clients. As a Life Member of the Dallas Safari Club, John Ed has supported numerous wildlife conservation efforts over the years. His background is varied and unique including international hunting consultant, game ranch development, commercial hunting operations, rural land development, commercial real estate and mineral production. Adhering to its roots, Ranch Investments is actively engaged in the marketing and acquisition of working farms and ranches. And since 2008, a new set of benefits has become available to our customers. With our network of accountants, attorneys, qualified intermediaries (for 1031 Exchanges) and real estate brokers, we have the team of professionals to assist you in the sale of your property and the reinvestment of the proceeds. Many times we encounter sellers who own property of significant value that has been in the family many years, resulting in a low cost basis, and the tax
implications can be significant. We work to develop a strategy such as utilizing the 1031 Exchange to reinvest the proceeds tax deferred into income-producing properties. On the opposite end of the spectrum is the first-time landowner, whether someone seeking a weekend getaway or a working land investment. We carefully listen to our clients’ objectives, develop a plan and locate the ideal property. After the purchase, we offer a full range of consulting services in ranch development for maximum enjoyment and utilization. Our expert team will assist you in taking an undeveloped piece of property and building lakes, roads, game fences, barns, houses, lodges and runways. Utilizing our network of wildlife biologists, we will develop a plan for the propagation of native and exotic game, migratory and

Located in Red River County near Detroit, the property consists of 1,200 -plus acres that will take hunters back in time. White-tailed deer, feral hog and duck hunts complement the world-class bird hunting. WCR also has competitionstyle sporting clay stations for parties and corporate events. FOR SALE by Owner 100+ Lb. A CAST-N-BLAST Elephant Ivory TusksIvory Tusks 100-pound Elephant
getaway
The tusks were harvested in Garafarda, Ethiopia on December 9,1988 and imported into the U.S. in early 1989. Ivory was placed on CITES Appendix 1 on August 17, 1990. The owner has enjoyed his script. The guides and staff at the lodge Story and photos by Nate Skinner trophy for over 30 years but the time has come to will accommodate their guests, according If you enjoy pursuing saltwater gamefish to what seems to be the optimal game plan along pristine flats, watching swarms of for achieving success. Sometimes it’s best to sell them to an appreciative buyer. ducks come cupping into the decoys with their feet down, and devouring hearty, gourmet meals, then a “Cast-N-Blast adventure out of Getaway Lodge at Port Mansfield will definitely capture your interest. Did I mention the food? Whether Mother Nature provides conditions favorable for catching fish and encountering in-your-face, decoying waterfowl or not, the homemade cuisine from the kitchen staff makes for an incredible experience in and of itself. If you go hungry during your stay, it’s your own fault. In addition to world-class fishing and waterfowl hunting opportunities, and a delicious menu, the venue boasts luxurious amenities that promote relaxation and a carefree attitude. Getaway Lodge owner Mike Sutton credits efforts from the lodge’s general manager, Sandra Garza, along with those from the rest of the staff and guides, that go above and beyond to ensure that guests have a phenomenal time throughout their trip. Perhaps the best part about a Cast-N-Blast outing is that you are able to fish and hunt all in the same day. I’ve enjoyed many excursions on the Lower Laguna Madre in which my hands graced fins and feathers alongside the likes of Getaway Lodge guides such as Capt. Ruben Garza, Capt. James Hagan and Capt. Aaron Cisneros. The jovial antics and banter that takes place while sharing a duck blind with any one of these individuals is priceless, especially over a hot, handmade breakfast taco from the lodge’s kitchen. Garza, Hagan and Cisneros do a fantastic job of consistently staying on the fish as well. Cast-N-Blasts don’t always follow a set
chase fish during the morning hours when the winds are typically down. When the fishing portion of a Cast-N-Blast takes place during the first half of the day, you’ll typically idle away from the dock at about sunrise, after a fulfilling breakfast. On other occasions when the conditions are right for an early morning duck hunt, you’ll be headed out before sunrise in order to get set up by first light. Not to worry — your guide will tote along a delicious breakfast and plenty of hot coffee. Airboats transport you and your party to and from the duck blinds — the scenic rides adding to the adventure. A mixture of diver ducks and puddlers will provide thrilling wing shooting opportunities, depending on where the hunt takes place. Redheads, scaup, pintails and mottled ducks regularly fly the deeper main bay waters, shorelines and spoil islands near Port Mansfield. Shallow sloughs, back lakes and flats attract teal, wigeon, gadwall, shovelers, and even some geese. Shallow running bay boats take on the taxi role when it’s time to fish the flats. Redfish and speckled trout are usually found schooling together in an aggressive mood. When the stars align, trophy trout will willingly strike magnum-sized, mullet-imitation plugs, while slot-sized reds will almost always be hungry. A Cast-N-Blast out of Getaway Lodge at Port Mansfield is a jam-up time. Fishing and hunting during the same day might sound too good to be true, yet the opportunity awaits. Go catch your next personal best, harvest a trophy, and be prepared to enjoy an unforgettable “getaway.
My passion for hunting elephants started in 1971. In my pursuit of big game, elephants became my main focus. In the early 1980s, it became evident that apparently the opportunity to hunt large trophy bull elephants seemed uncertain. Therefore, for the balance of the decade, I ventured to Ethiopia on five safaris with PH Nassos Russos. I concentrated my efforts in the Gambella region and ventured into the rain forest of Garafarda. Unlike other hunting concessions of Africa, the Garafarda area was only accessible on foot. Therefore, 26 porters, five safari staff, two trackers and a water boy were required. My safaris varied between 3 weeks to 1 month. On December 9, 1988 the ultimate challenge of tracking the ultimate trophy, the ‘holy grail' of Africa hunting, was within my grasp. The stalk was nine hours in strenuous mountain terrain which was challenging to say the least. The goal of my life’s hunting pursuits was this hundred-pounder, weighing 100 x 104 pounds. 92 |

2020 Conklin Award Winner
Alan Sackman
Alan Sackman began hunting at the age of 10 on a farm in upstate New York. Over the last 60 years Alan has harvested 350 species in more than 40 countries. His footsteps have been heard around the world as he has enjoyed the adventures of sheep and goat hunting, taking a total of 66 that included 62 different species. Not only has Alan been successful on his hunts, his wife Barbara has also harvested over 350 different species. That is quite an accomplishment for one person, and a feat for both together. Alan persevered over the other challenging finalists; Bradford T. Black, MD, Wayne Farnsworth, Jr., Mark Hampton, Béla Hidvégi, Eduardo Negrete Franco and Archie J. Nesbitt.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE, HIGH-TECH APPROACH When it comes to buying or selling real estate, a team of agents who know the area like the back of their hands is paramount. At Campbell Farm & Ranch, you’ll get that, and more. “We started in Stephens, Young and Throckmorton counties,” said broker Boone Campbell. “As our team has grown over the decades, we’ve expanded in area, including Archer, Eastland, Jack, Palo Pinto and Shackelford counties.” The laser focus on specific areas of north central Texas allows the Graham-based team to know the landowners, ranchers and properties, and provide both buyers and sellers with true inside information. “We deal with both large and small tracts of land,” Campbell said. “Our team handles a lot of properties that require marketing toward recreational hunters, and we also keep in touch with the local cattle guys and gals — many of them have shown recent interest in expanding their operations.” Campbell has seen plenty of changes in the markets over the years. “Historically, most of the buyers come out of the Metroplex,” he said. “Oil and gas has had its ups and downs, but the construction industry kept the market running during the down time in oil.” Lately, some areas are increasing in popularity, with buyers interested in both wildlife and cattle. “The Archer County area is popular for new cattle operations, due to the strong grass production and access from the Metroplex is a little easier,” Campbell said. “We are seeing an increase in buyers looking for land with prime qualities for cattle.” While local knowledge is a key, being able to effectively reach and impress people from all over is equally important, and Campbell Farm & Ranch uses
the most effective technological tools to market the properties listed — including social platforms utilizing activitygenerating videos of HD aerial photography. “Real estate is a high-tech industry and our team has the ability to quickly master new technology and utilize the technologies to their fullest potential. When drones came about, I started flying them immediately,” Campbell said. “I’ve been flying them for five or six years. Our in-house production coupled with the use of professional video producers gives us the ability to provide the same kind of shine on our 100-acre listings as seen with our 1,000-plus-acre ranches.” Campbell said his greatest enjoyment comes when new landowners improve the land they purchase. “Much of the land, especially inherited land with absentee owners, is as raw as it gets,” he said. “New owners come in with the mindset of improving the land and turn the raw pastures into beautiful works of art with improvements that benefit the wildlife and the future landowners as well. I enjoy seeing overgrown dirt turned back into a ranching oasis.”

BUFFALO WOOL PROVIDES THE BEST PROTECTION FROM THE ELEMENTS Theresa and Ron Miskin have been raising American plains bison for more than 30 years. The Buffalo Wool Company started as an extra income source with a desire to add more value to the bison industry. They create bison wool apparel products, from hats, socks to bags and more, all with the fur of the majestic animals that once roamed coast to coast, from Alaska to Mexico City. The Miskins are passionate about bringing you the best quality bison products. “We’ve spent the last 10 years developing a supply chain that brings together small mills, local designers and large ranches,” Theresa said. “We believe that this chain, working together, can preserve one of America's great symbols, while bolstering the U.S. economy by focusing on American-made products.” After years of overhunting, the bison only made a comeback due to the commercial ranching industry. Many ranchers have dedicated land and resources to the bison — helping numbers from around 100-1000 grow to more than 700,000 today. “We are big supporters of bison ranchers all across this country; we learned from using it ourselves how luxurious, warm, and durable Bison fiber truly is,” Theresa said. In recent years, the Miskins purchased a part of the historic Goodnight Ranch.

Cecil, Ron’s dad, is responsible for bringing the bison back to the ranch after almost 100 years. They also work with almost 200 ranches across the country to source their products. The Buffalo Wool Co. is a historic name for a company originally founded in 1821 by the Hudson Bay Co. in Red River, Manitoba. That company only lasted about five years before bankruptcy. Since the name wasn’t being used, the Miskins adopted it in 2011. Professional hunter Craig Boddington is a believer in the Buffalo Wool Company socks. "I wore them every day during Kansas rifle season, both hunting and guiding (I did wash them occasionally),” he said. “Extremely comfortable, very warm including when damp, amazingly washable. Awesome socks!” The Buffalo Wool Company guarantees you will love their American bison products. Their products are made for working hard and playing hard. Every Buffalo Wool Co. product has a 100-percent guarantee. If you don't absolutely love your purchase, just tell them which you would prefer: a replacement, an exchange, or buy back. The Buffalo Wool Company is celebrating its 10th year at the Dallas Safari Club Show, so stop by the booth and say hello. And never have cold feet again!

Firebird Targets never stop improving. Though the original formula remains very popular in the UK, U.S. and Canada, developers behind Firebird Targets are never satisfied. Combining years of suggestions from shooters and reviewers, Firebird Targets developed the next generation of targets, the Firebird 50 BIO. This revolutionary new target improves upon the original design in nearly every aspect. The all-new improved system maximizes the amount of smoke and sound and is now the world's first 100-percent biodegradable detonating target. The new 50mm size fits on the top or bottom of a clay pigeon, giving shooters more options when shooting clays with shotguns. And, the loaded clays feed through automatic clay throwers! With the new 50 BIO Target, the entire target is biodegradable and completely disintegrates in nature. Shoot Firebird 50 BIO Targets all day and let Mother
Nature handle the cleanup. You still have the chest-thumping boom, billowing smoke, ease of use, but now you can spend more time shooting and less time cleaning up. What’s best is that Firebird Targets offer all this in one package without raising the price. In fact, we were able to lower the price of Firebird 50 BIO Targets to $17.99 for a pack of 10. Firebird 50 BIO Targets will be available in March 2020. Wholesale orders are now being accepted. Contact us for more information about becoming a Firebird Targets retailer in your area. If you’re ready for a green and simple alternative to binary targets, try the Firebird 50 BIO.

BRINGING WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT SOLUTIONS TO YOUR PRIVATE LAKES Ranch managers rely on good stock assessments to manage their livestock and wildlife, taking daily observations, putting out trail cameras to learn every animal on the ranch, and doing helicopter surveys once or twice each year. What about the fish in your lakes or ponds? When it comes to private bodies of water, most managers simply wait for problems to develop. This reactive approach leads to sharp declines in fisheries that can be hard to correct. “With a lake or pond, by the time you notice a problem, it has likely already negatively affected fish growth,” said John Jones, president of Lochow Ranch Pond and Lake Management. “Having a sound monitoring program is essential for maintaining self-sustaining fisheries. For our clients, we do three or more electrofishing surveys each year to closely monitor population dynamics and make adjustments proactively.” One of Lochow’s donations at the DSC convention this year is a free electrofishing survey at your lake in Texas, Louisiana or Oklahoma, a perfect item for those wishing to get more proactive in their lake management. The survey will include a written fisheries assessment and management plan, providing specific recommendations to help create your ideal fishery. “Each lake on your property is an individual entity,” Jones said. “Only all of your animals are hidden from sight.” Jones also will be the presenter at a seminar at the DSC convention. Titled “Lake Management: From Start to Fish,” the presentation will take place on Sat., Jan. 11 at 12:30 p.m.

“We’ll talk about how to establish fundamental management practices (feeding/fertilizer programs, habitat, bass harvest, vegetation control) and how having a firm foundation can help your lake persist through disturbances (flood, drought, predators),” Jones said. Another donation at the show is a year’s worth of high-protein fish feed, delivered onsite (in Texas, Louisiana or Oklahoma), along with two high-capacity fish feeders. One fish predator troubles Jones, and is becoming increasingly prevalent each year. “The North American river otter is probably the single most important challenge facing lake managers,” he said. “Primarily nocturnal predators, they will eat around 7 pounds of fish each day, and they focus on your largest fish. It can really be heartbreaking for owners who get cheated out of their biggest fish, taking away the fun of lake management.” Lochow Ranch’s biologists and fleet of trucks are based in Bryan, Texas from where they manage more

than 6,000 lakes in Texas and the surrounding states. In addition to one-off services, Lochow Ranch has a monthly retainer program where fisheries biologists visit the property monthly, closely monitoring your lake and addressing potential problems proactively. Lochow Ranch’s full set of services also includes new lake design and build, where goals and preferences are taken into consideration in creating a personalized waterbody. “Design and builds are increasing for us,” Jones said. “It’s a sign of the great economy. Also, rainbow trout stocking has become a hit on private lakes.” Stop by the Lochow Ranch Lake Management booth (2219) at the DSC convention to discuss all of your lake management needs.

BETTER TO HAVE IT AND NOT NEED IT, THAN TO NEED IT AND NOT HAVE IT This truism of gun ownership can also apply to owning a better, more refined gun. So why settle for a striker-fired pistol with an OK trigger and a few generic grip options when the HK VP9 or VP9SK have great triggers and 27 different fitment combinations? Options too, are better to have . . .
