BOOK YOUR PRIVATE PARADISE Doug McComb’s Camelot Ridge Resort, located near Fort Wayne, Indiana, has some awesome bucks — but so do some other places across the country. What sets this hunting lodge apart is you can book the entire resort exclusive to you and your guests with as little as a group of three to as many as 10. Owned by Doug McComb, Camelot Ridge Resort was his personal hunting paradise for his family and friends for over 20 years but now is open to a very limited number of customers. “We stand out above the crowd of outfitters and lodges because of our total commitment to our hunters, as well as our nonhunting guests,” McComb said. “We pay attention to the smallest of details, and we make dreams come true.” Dave Watson, who has produced Ted Nugent Spirit of the Wild for the last decade, and also Bushnell Outdoors, Cabela’s Memories in the Field and Mathews TV, hunted with Nugent at Camelot last year. “I was so impressed with the deer and the lodge and the incredible staff, I agreed to help out with media and promotions,” he said. “Camelot Ridge Resort is the most magical place I’ve ever seen. It’s Disneyland for hunters.” The hunts at Doug McComb’s Camelot Ridge Resort are cost inclusive. There are no additional charges when you depart. In addition to any buck you choose (up to 250 inches), there is sporting clays and pheasant hunting. Camelot Ridge

Resort even supplies shotguns and shells. There’s bass fishing in their stocked pond and when the daylight fades, relax in the hot tub or hit the exercise room. It’s the perfect place for a family getaway or to impress important clients. Note: Before his 20-year career in outdoor television, Dave Watson played bass guitar for five years with Lee Greenwood and then 10 years with The Oak Ridge Boys. Drop by Booth 310 and say hello, and be sure to ask him about the Dallas Safari Club show special pricing.

CONVENTION MEMORIES FOR THE

4o Anniversary th

By Karrie Meadows

DSC Communications Manager

At a recent DSC 100 event, volunteers and staff wrote one of their favorite memories from past conventions. Some memories were general in nature, like seeing guns they could never afford or looking at new gear for the next season. Others were more specific, like the moment a convention chair saw the line of people waiting to get on the show floor the first time it ever opened on Sunday; or when another saw DSC on the side of the Omni Hotel on the Dallas skyline, reminded how some parts of the convention we have grown used to were once big and novel decisions. But as someone who loves tradition, my favorites to read were the ones that were bigger than just one day or event. I am thinking about the responses like “catching up with people I’ve hunted with” and “volunteering with my family.” It showed the life-long relationships that are fostered and deepened each year. One person even wrote, “feeling proud to be part of such a great exhibition.” Wow! I think they nailed it on the head with that one. All of us — whether you come to convention every year or have it on your list to attend one day in the future — make this event possible by supporting DSC in any capacity. Now that’s something we can all be proud to be a part of! Thank you for attending our 40th con-

vention. You are important to us, and we look forward to seeing you all in the exhibit halls and at the Omni Hotel for our banquets. Terri Lewis, Operations Manager “This years’ convention, the 40th of DSC, will be my 28th convention. I celebrated my 27th year with DSC September 1. As you can imagine, I have seen a lot of changes over the years, but what sticks out the most are the countless memories I have. My first convention in January of 1995 was a real eye-opener. Between September of 1994 and January of 1995, I learned what the adage, “baptized by fire” truly meant. Seeing our exhibitors, and our members from all over the world, at our convention each year is the highlight of my year.” Crystal Allison, Events Manager “I was ‘voluntold’ for my first DSC convention when I was 17 years old. My dad was the Silent Auction Co-Chair at the time, and I believe the ask went something like this: ‘Hey, I know you’re off from school that week, and I need help so you’re coming with me.’ I had never been to the DSC show before, but I learned a lot very quickly and worked hard to help wherever I could. Everywhere I looked, friendly but unfamiliar faces were doing the same — putting in whatever time, energy, and muscle strength they had to make this huge event all come together. Over the years, those unfamiliar faces have become friends, and I am continuously in awe of

how giving of their time and talents they are. The longer I’m involved, the more amazed I become at just how many moving parts there are and how many volunteers it really takes to make the whole thing work.” Christie Selle, Auctions Assistant “The convention is my favorite time of year, because we have the chance to see old friends, make new ones, visit with outfitters you’ve hunted with and discover all the amazing opportunities, products and businesses that our exhibitors offer. We

wouldn’t have a convention if it wasn’t for our loyal exhibitors and donors — we all thank YOU!” Carson Keys, Chapter Coordinator “By the time January rolls around, most hunting seasons around the U.S. will have concluded. If you’re anything like me, constantly craving adventure and the experiences hunting provides, this lull can make for monotonous times. Fortunately for all of us, the 40th Annual DSC Convention provides us an opportunity to relive those old memories and prepare for new ones!”

CREATE GREAT MEMORIES WITH BERETTA There is nothing like Beretta Gallery for connoisseurs of fine guns, clothing and accessories. Browsing through the Dallas Gallery, one of three in the U.S., you’ll wonder if you’ve walked into your favorite clothing store/art gallery in Italy. As you turn the corner, you’ll realize you’re in your favorite gun shop. Also in the mix is fine home goods and hunting and shooting accessories. You wonder, “How do they get all of this in here?” Most shooters know about Beretta, an Italian gun manufacturer established about 500 years ago by the same family that is running it now. And at Dallas’ Beretta Gallery, there is much more. For its partners in conservation, like Lone Star Outdoor News Foundation and Park Cities Quail, the Gallery hosts events throughout the year. For its clients, staff at the Gallery guide hosted hunts, bringing customers more than what takes places at the store, giving them opportunities to experience new adventures in the outdoors and meet new people. And now, any inventory at either the Dallas or New York Beretta Gallery is available online at berettagalleryusa.com, said Dallas Gallery manager Cory Mays. “You can purchase firearms off of it,” Mays said. “If we don’t have it and New York does, we can get it to you. And it gives everyone, whether they can get to a store or not, access to explore and see the unique items we carry specifically for the galleries. Who doesn’t enjoy a trip into the world’s finest sporting good store? In Dallas, stop by the Beretta Gallery in Highland Park Village and see for yourself.

ANOTHER WORLD FIRST FOR LONGTHORNE English shotgun maker Longthorne is a name synonymous with luxury and innovation. The company hails from ‘engineering’ heritage rather than the usual ‘gun trade’ route, and started making shotguns in a small barn in rural England in 2006. Longthorne has come a long way since, having morphed into a full-fledged manufacturer of luxury firearms, offering a varied and exciting range of innovative, 100 percent English-made shotguns for a not unreasonable cost, as their trigger plate range starts at around GB£12000.00. They can be purchased from Pacific Sporting Arms. The company now occupies a 14,000 square foot factory in central England, only an hour away from London by train, where they continue to innovate. Renowned for its shotgun barrels, which are fully machined, sculptured even, from a single piece of high specification steel, their latest creation is a set of barrels fully sculptured from titanium — not the easiest substance to sculpt! The first set, having been proofed in October 2021 at The London Proof House, is 32 inches long with a ramped rib and weigh 930 grams, contrasting with their already lightweight steel barrels with the same length and rib weighing 1550 grams. This represents another world first for Longthorne, and the company will have these on display at DSC. One would not be mistaken for thinking these guns would ‘kick like a mule,’ but this is not the case. In keeping with the rest of their range, these offer the same ‘negligible felt recoil and muzzle flip’ qualities as their steel barrels and are ideal as a very lightweight game gun. Recent testing (Titanium Gun Barrel ?!? on YouTube) has shown them to be

extremely pointable and stable. This is not the first innovation in the past 12 months for Longthorne. Earlier this year, the company manufactured a set of barrels completely machined from a solid rectangular piece of Damascus, much to the delight of their customer who currently has the only set in existence. The company also recently released a range of more off-the-shelf trigger plate models to complement their original range of bespoke ‘true sidelock’ models. Every cloud has a silver lining, and despite the negativity surrounding COVID, Longthorne was able to concentrate its efforts on their new range, together with its SXS model, also recently released. The past 18 months have been challenging for many businesses, and Longthorne is no exception. However, we are very optimistic about the future, which looks extremely rosy. You really need to try a ‘Longthorne’ to appreciate the claim that their guns just don’t have the same ‘felt recoil’ and ‘muzzle flip’ issues often experienced with other guns. This is not just their ‘sales patter.’ Longthorne is not a company to rest on its laurels, especially where R&D is concerned, and is currently working with a U.S. company and developing a range of luxury pistols which will also be available to view at DSC.

castle

TRIP TO THE

By Lili Keys

Lone Star Outdoor News

The impressive front gate opens and you drive along a windy road, hearing shots from the clays course on your right. As you reach the top of the hill, the trivets become visible, you’ve made it to the castle on the hill. I have passed Greystone Castle what seems to be a million times on the way to the ranch, duck club or other pursuits. I have often wondered what it would be like to hunt there. The castle is perched upon a beautiful hill in Mingus, and you can’t miss it from the highway. It has four trivets and overlooks 6,000 acres of rolling hills filled with trophy whitetail, upland sporting opportunities and an exotic area with everything from red stag, zebra to Jacob 4-horn sheep. In February, while scrolling Instagram, I came across a giveaway from Greystone Castle. “Follow Greystone, tag a few friends and be entered to win a deer hunt with a 3-day, 2-night all-inclusive stay.” Simple enough. I entered and didn’t think about it again. It was the evening of my bridal shower when a friend texted me. “Have you checked Instagram today?” she asked. “No,” I replied. “Well, it’s your lucky day because you won that deer hunt with Greystone!” My husband, Carson, and I planned the trip for October, our six-month wedding anniversary, as a second honeymoon. From the moment we arrived, we were treated, as we liked to joke, like royalty. The staff, attention to detail, the facilities and of course the castle made you feel like you were transported over to Europe, even though you were less than two hours west of Dallas. We were paired with Hunter Lively as our guide. The young guide’s enthusiasm and passion for hunting was evident from the moment we met. Swapping hunting stories in the blind,

ON THE HILL

a doe ran out about an hour after we got settled. Lively had his eyes on a nice buck for me and a few moments later, he came running out, chasing that doe. I pulled up my phone, trying to get a video of his rutting action. It was evident to Lively and Carson the buck wasn’t going to wait around for long. “Um, Lili, it’s time to put the phone down and I’d get your gun up if I were you,” Carson whispered. “Yeah, that’s your buck Lili,” Lively added. I got my trusty 7mm Mauser in position, but the buck kept changing positions. He started to walk out the way he came and Lively let out a whistle. "Boom." He was down. A beautiful 12-point buck, and the rush of adrenaline came over me. Now the pressure was off. The rest of the weekend was open to relaxing. We returned to the castle for cocktails and appetizers. As the sun set in the horizon, we glassed giant bucks feeding the fields below. What a way to end the day. You will never go hungry at Greystone. Executive Chef Vickie Swell takes your typical comfort food and elevates it. You can taste her passion for cooking in every bite. After dinner, Swell’s husband and ranch caretaker, Kevin Swell, entertained us on the guitar in the pavilion. “We hope that people come as guests and leave feeling like family,” Chef Swell said. The next day, we opted for sleeping in, breakfast in our room and an exotic ranch tour after lunch. Driving through the exotic area, I was transported back to Africa. Blesbok, axis, waterbuck, zebra, Pere David’s deer, red stag and sika deer graced us with their presence. The hot tub and a nap were next, followed by another deer watching session and an incredible steak for dinner. We met new friends by the fire and closed the bar with them, the perfect way to round out the weekend. We look forward to our next trip back to Greystone, the castle on the hill.

RECORD BREAKING YEAR Ranch real estate is known as a difficult profession to get started in. Competing against other agents who have been in the business for years can be an overwhelming task. However, a newcomer has made a forceful entrance into the business. Brian Cook, a ranch real estate agent out of Boerne, Texas has closed over $20 million in sales in his first full year in the business, all at the age of 24. Cook knows ranches and hunting. He grew up hunting and guiding on his family’s property in Maverick County, and took over the wildlife management on the ranch about four years ago. He also has worked on a number of ranches throughout South Texas and the Hill Country. Even his education is focused on wildlife, as he graduated with a degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences from Texas A&M University in 2019. “The background and education really help,” Cook said. “I use that experience to assist my clients with finding the perfect land for their management goals. Each person is a little different on what they want to accomplish: whether it be raising big whitetail or exotics, or dove and quail, or anything in between. My job is to find them the land that will help them accomplish those goals.” Things like wildlife and cattle and what they need to survive and thrive come naturally to Cook. “On the seller’s side, I know what clients are looking for and can quickly figure out what niche we need to market too. Getting a ranch prepared to list and marketing correctly all comes down to knowing the current program being run on the ranch and finding a buyer who can build off of that program.” What has helped the agent grow so quickly? “I got with a good broker (Foster Farm & Ranch).” Cook said. “Chad Foster has helped me out a lot. He has been in the business a long time and has the experience and knowledge to guide me to being the best agent I can be for my clients.”

Cook said many of the properties he has listed have sold quickly over the past year, and he attributed much of the success to his marketing efforts. “One thing I realized quickly is, in order to be successful, I needed to take advantage of social media. Everyone is using the same online listing sites, magazines, etc., but no one was taking full advantage of social media. I’ve grown my Instagram page BrianCook_RanchSales to more than 10,000 followers in a short amount of time. People like to see what the day-to-day of my job is like and it gives me a chance to display some of the incredible properties I come across. I’ve picked up quite a few buyers and sellers from Facebook and Instagram.” Cook has also separated himself from much of the field by bringing in top-of-the-line photographers for each of his listings. “I’m lucky, I grew up with a guy who has won multiple National Geo contests. He’s taken the photos for all my listings. He has an incredible talent and can draw out the beauty on properties that is typically difficult to see through pictures,” Cook said. “It makes the difference. It’s easy to look past a property with bad pictures, but when you can see the beauty of the ranch immediately, even online, well it really just sets the ranch apart.” Cook has sold ranches in more than 13 counties this year. “I love it, I get to see a lot of beautiful ranches all over the state,” he said. “I will go anywhere the opportunity takes me.” From the Rio Grande to Baffin Bay and Abilene to the outskirts of Houston, Cook has covered a lot of ground in 2021, and he’s not afraid to hit the road. His future plans at such a young age? “I’m just going to keep after it,” Cook said. “I love what I do. I’ve got a number of properties lined up to start the 2022 year strong. We will see what happens. I’d like to be coming in around $40 or $50 million.”

BLASTING OFF WITH THE NEW 65BIO DETONATING TARGET Firebird USA, manufacturer of 50BIO Detonating Targets, announced the next generation of the wildly popular Firebird Detonating Target, the Firebird 65BIO. The newly designed biodegradable casing is 30 percent larger, providing a greater explosion for firearms, air rifles and arrows. Forget about messy chemical mixing kits. Firebird requires no mixing and is legal to transport. Following on the success of the Firebird 50BIO released at the 2019 SHOT Show, the new Firebird 65BIO is a vast improvement of the original Firebird 65mm target discontinued in 2018. While shooters and archers are not tasked with mixing nasty chemicals to enjoy the enormous blast of the 50BIO, Firebird USA continues improving. Remove a Firebird 65BIO from the pack. No mixing needed, peel and stick for an extreme blast response without the need for clean-up after a day of shooting. Unused targets must be stored like ammunition. Customer feedback has always been important to us. When sporting clay shooters asked for a larger target, we listened. Our fans loved the enormous blast and appreciated the biodegradable aspect of 50BIO, but they wanted an easier target to shoot. Redesigning the 65mm to a biodegradable casing and minimizing lidding thickness allows maximum projectile penetration of a 1/3 larger target. These improvements optimize shotgun applications on sporting clays and provide unforgettable, exploding fun. 65BIO provides a vastly improved system for all high-power pellet guns, archery, rimfire and center fire systems. Intense competition scenarios and marksmen will prefer the smaller Firebird 50BIO, while the new Firebird 65BIO appeals to a wide range of shooters. The new Firebird 65BIO offers a greater margin of error with more reliable detonation for low velocity projectiles. The new Firebird 65BIO is expected to ship starting in January 2022 and will be sold in packages of 10 for $19.95, and a case of 100 targets for $199.50. Good news for 50BIO fans, the price of a pack of 10 has been reduced to $16.95 and a case of 100 targets to $169.95. Learn about the safety of using Firebird Targets and order your new targets on our website.

THE BEST PROTECTION FROM THE ELEMENTS FROM BUFFALO WOOL Theresa and Ron Miskin have been raising American plains bison for more than 30 years. The Buffalo Wool Company started as an extra income source with a desire to add more value to the bison industry. They create bison wool apparel products, from hats, socks to bags and more, all with the fur of the majestic animals that once roamed coast to coast, from Alaska to Mexico City. The Miskins are passionate about bringing you the best quality bison products. “We’ve spent the last 10 years developing a supply chain that brings together small mills, local designers and large ranches,” Miskin said. “We believe that this chain, working together, can preserve one of America's great symbols, while bolstering the U.S. economy by focusing on American-made products.” After years of overharvest, the bison only made a comeback due to the commercial ranching industry. Many ranchers have dedicated land and resources to the bison — helping numbers from around 100-1,000 grow to more than 700,000 today. “We are big supporters of bison ranchers all across this country; we learned from using it ourselves how luxurious, warm, and durable bison fiber truly is,” Miskin said. In recent years, the Miskins purchased a part of the historic Goodnight Ranch. Cecil, Ron’s dad, is responsible for bringing the bison back to the ranch after almost 100 years. They also work with almost 200 ranches across the country to source their products. The Buffalo Wool Co. is a historic name for a company originally founded in 1821 by the Hudson Bay Co. in Red River, Manitoba. That company lasted about five

years before bankruptcy. Since the name wasn’t being used, the Miskins adopted it in 2011. Professional hunter Craig Boddington is a believer in the Buffalo Wool Company socks. "I wore them every day during Kansas rifle season, both hunting and guiding (I did wash them occasionally),” he said. “Extremely comfortable, very warm including when damp, amazingly washable. Awesome socks!” The Buffalo Wool Company guarantees you will love their American bison products. Their products are made for working hard and playing hard. Every Buffalo Wool Co. product has a 100-percent guarantee. If you don't absolutely love your purchase, just tell them which you would prefer: a replacement, an exchange or buyback.

Texas grain. Texas whiskey. By Lili Keys

Lone Star Outdoor News Tahwahkaro is a family-owned, small batch, grain to glass bourbon distillery located in Palestine, Texas. You might not know how to pronounce the name, but once you have a sip, it’s a name you simply won’t forget. Tahwahkaro Distilling Co. was founded in 2016 by brothers Jason and Justin Jackson. The name translates into English as “bend in the river” and appealed to the founders as they were starting a new chapter in their respective lives. The shape of the bottle is shaped almost like a bota bag used to carry water or drinks in the days gone by. TAH’s spirits are milled, mashed, fermented, distilled, aged and bottled in-house to bring the consumer a smooth, well-rounded flavor. The family stretches far beyond the business ledger. Each person who encounters Justin, Jackson, Allie or anyone who works for TAH will tell you, after a short time of talking with them, you start to feel like family too. I've seen first-hand how the whiskey is distilled and stored in barrels until it's time to tap and pour. The flavor is rich, with notes of warm vanilla and will leave your taste buds tingling at first sip. I prefer to drink mine on the rocks with a dash of water while sitting out by the campfire at the ranch. Their commitment to quality, supporting community, and hard work shines through each glass. TAH’s award-winning bourbon has received many awards, including two gold medals at the 2020 SIP Awards and multiple silver awards at the World Whiskies Awards. TAH recently opened a new facility and venue in downtown Palestine. The new space allows for an indoor music/entertainment area, an outdoor patio, a tasting room, a merchandise room and a meeting room that will hold up to 300 people. They offer tastings and tours, so add Tahwahkaro as your next stop on the Texas Whiskey Trail or pick up a bottle at a store near you.

SEE THE FINEST WILDLIFE ARTISTS IN THE WORLD For more than 35 years, Ross Parker and Call Of Africa Galleries have exhibited and supported all the major hunting shows. Through decades of donations at these events, we have become one of the largest donors to ensure the rights of our fellow hunters and conservationists. “This is a stand for our God-given right,” Parker said. “In business since 1987 and having two galleries in Naples and Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, we have dealt with a lot of anti-hunters out there. Hunting and the conservation associated is much like politics. Unless you are well informed, educated and have put your boots on the ground to learn, stay out of it as then you are just a mouthpiece for a personal agenda.” Call Of Africa’s artists are mostly exclusive to the organization, with many of them contracting with Parker as their agent aside from the gallery representation. Having taken no-name artists to the top of the art pinnacle of success in the shortest time in wildlife art history has added to their excellent reputation. “We have had our artists on the covers of Sotheby’s and Christie’s and this is just part of what we can do,” Parker said. “And the hunting and conservation conventions are the perfect venue to engage and meet like-minded people and art collectors. In the end, it is the collection of art that really is the finishing touch to anyone’s home.” Both locations offer a comprehensive collection of traditional and contemporary fine art, including breathtaking African wildlife and landscapes, dramatic Everglades scenes, powerful seascapes and historic safari scenes. Various mediums used include oil, pastel, watercolor, acrylic, stone, wood, bronze, rare verdite, murano and cast glass.

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE FOR YOUR RANCH SALE A G E N T / L A N D

S P E C A L I S T

UTILIZE 24 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN OWNING, DEVELOPING, AND MANAGING COMMERCIAL AND RECREATION HUNTING RANCHES AS YOUR BUYER OR SELLER REPRESENTATIVE.

Craig Wilson is more than a real estate sales agent, he’s a commercial hunting operator, developer and manager several times over. Combined, it’s the perfect recipe for who you need help from when buying or selling a Texas ranch. Wilson is an agent with Texas Ranches for Sale, and he focuses on connecting with buyers and sellers who benefit from his 25 years of experience in hunting and recreation ranches. “I developed ranches before becoming a real estate agent,” Wilson said. “That is extremely valuable in helping a buyer develop a ranch or determining whether to buy a ranch. Also, I help sellers figure out what needs to be done before selling — especially with the prices being asked for today.” Surface water is a key attribute that many properties do not have enough of for today’s buyer, Wilson said. “I have added multiple ponds, lakes and larger water sources to properties and know how it should be done,” he said. “It helps immensely with the wildlife on the property and, even more so, by increasing its value and desirability.” Wilson offices from his ranch in Pearsall, and primarily services South Texas properties.

EXTREME When it’s day nine of your ten-day Dall Sheep hunt in the Northwest Territories, and you wake up to six inches of snow it’s not a great time to be limited by your hunting boots. Some may wait it out in the tent, but your Mountain Extremes give you the wherewithal to continue hunting, no matter what Mother Nature throws at you. There is nothing tougher than high altitude sheep hunting, so to help you in your hunting adventures, we built a boot tough enough to keep on charging, no matter what conditions arise.

DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT...

“When your season consists of 100 days in the mountains, carrying heavy packs, you need great boots. Footwear for us is not a matter of luxury or fashion, it’s a function of performance under terrible conditions. Years and miles of abuse have shown me which boots work best - Kenetrek; comfort and durability to match the conditions of my hunts.” Official Day Program

BOSS Shotshells and The Crippling Reality

BOSS SHOTSHELLS

☎ (269) 465-3631 BOSSSHOTSHELLS.COM

52 |

The Bad: Too many birds are lost to crippling every single year in the U.S. alone. Although that number is tough to pin down, one thing is for certain, and we can all agree on, it’s far, far too many. The Ugly: As waterfowlers and wingshooters go, that’s 100 percent on us. The Good? Together, we can drastically reduce that number — a huge nugget of hope we all should celebrate. In a time when it seems like our hunting heritage is always under siege, imagine if we, as a community, commit to reducing that awful number of cripples. What would reducing it by even half look like? For one, it puts a significant number of more birds on the nesting grounds each year. Now imagine what increased breeding success could mean. Maybe we’d get more than a single pintail and a few more scaup per day. Maybe mallard limits in certain regions could follow. Maybe the anti-hunting crowd will ease up a little — but we’re not holding our breath. In the end, more birds for everyone would be a fantastic thing for our hunts, our legacies and our hopes for future generations. All we have to do is do our part and that starts with doing what’s right. But how? By changing the narrative. Rethink not only the way you’re hunting, but the tools with which you hunt. Start with a better shell than tired old steel, and we’re not just saying that because we’re a shell company. We’re saying this because it’s the truth, evidenced by the massive decrease in birds dying from lead poisoning after lead became outlawed. That’s proof that the actions of the waterfowling community can make a huge difference without the government stepping in and telling us how to hunt. After all, sportsmen were the original conservationists. In a way, voluntarily walking away from lead was the right thing to do. But it came with a new set of consequences. Whereas we were poisoning less birds using non-toxic steel, the issue of crippling birds became a much bigger deal. Steel, no matter what size shot or the absurd speed it claims to reach, just doesn’t hit or penetrate nearly as well. And while the advent of heavier, denser non-toxic shot options were great, they cost an arm and a leg, putting that level of lethality out of reach for most hunters. For years, we’ve had a new reality: We’re poisoning less but now we’re crippling more. With copper-plated BOSS, we can change that reality. Nearly as heavy as lead and safe in classic barrels, it’s like the good old days are back in both premium performance and value. At BOSS, we only sell direct at BOSSshotshells.com. That means there’s no paying retail middleman markups. Just premium shells shipped from our door to yours. For a few dimes more per squeeze, copper-plated BOSS kills like lead without shredding your wallet out in the process. That’s a win-win for your budget and the birds. With BOSS, start by getting honest with yourself about how you like to take birds. Paddles down and in the decoys? Or pass shooting at 40-plus yards? Most folks start with our 12 gauge 2 3/4” Shorty #5, easily our most versatile load. Once you’ve thought long and hard about your common shooting scenario, screw in a choke. Most go with an IM or a full, depending on shooting distance. Now, actually put it on paper. That’s real-deal woodsmanship and we’d like to see the waterfowling community get way back into it. Pattern your shotgun and you’ll know exactly what it’s capable of at your chosen distance. If you find a few holes in your pattern, choke it down. If it’s too tight, open it up. Experiment and really perfect your pattern. You’ll shoot less and kill more, guaranteed. Only after you’ve patterned should you put copper-plated BOSS on the birds. That’s when you can start fine-tuning shell and shot size, but again most start with the BOSS Shorty. Next — and this one’s key — ‘No Your Shot.’ We’re not just talking about saying no to skybusting. That’s amateur hour. We’re asking that you pull off a bird if you know the shot is pushing your effective range. More birds will come, and you’ll reduce your number of cripples even more. Last, we’d ask you marinate on what you’ve just read. Think about that number and how small changes in our collective thinking can really make a big difference for the birds. Consider joining a conservation organization. And as always, don’t be afraid to reach out to us for help on either social media or through our website. The BOSSmen are here for you and the birds.

conservation money PUTTING HIS

WHERE HIS MOUTH IS

By Craig Nyhus

Lone Star Outdoor News

Dr. Roger Marshall, now Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS), is more than an obstetrician and politician — he’s a fifth-generation farm kid, U.S. Army Reserve veteran, avid hunter and conservationist. “I grew up in the outdoors,” he said. After medical school at the University of Kansas, he began his medical practice in Great Bend, Kansas and hunted whenever he could, owning Labradors and Vizslas. In 1999, he bought land between two wetland areas, the Cheyenne Bottoms and the Quivera National Wildlife Refuge. “Rattlesnake Creek flows through the property by the refuge,” Marshall said. “It was covered in salt cedar. We worked with the refuge to eliminate it. There were no chemicals used — it was all dozers, axes and chain saws.” At Cheyenne Bottoms, the largest wetlands in the interior U.S., Blood Creek is the source of water for the area — a major passageways for birds on the Central Flyway. “We fenced off the creek to keep cattle out,” Marshall said. “Duck hunters from the 1900s figured out how to back flood about 60 acres and obtained water rights that predated the establishment of Cheyenne Bottoms. We worked with Ducks Unlimited and shored up the dikes to store the water and let it egress out. It has tremendous duck hunting and the work was good for the wetlands and the wildlife.” Sen. Marshall took on one more land project — 320 acres in nearby Stafford County consisting of a wheat field and a few small ponds and a modest cabin. “We worked with the NRCS (Natural Resources Conservation Service) to plant 20,000 seedlings from the Kansas Forestry Department, and we created food plots and put shrubs with berries all around the outside. It has turned it into a haven for pheasants, quail, turkey and deer.” The work was done by hand, with some help. “It was a great project for my kids,” Marshall said. “When the baseball team or church kids needed to raise money, we put them to work. We replanted trees when some died — it was 4 to 5 years of hard work.” The Senator hosted a “Team Marshall” hunt in early November, including spending a day in Great Bend hunting ducks in the morning at his property, followed by a few hours chasing pheasants at his farm. Dakota, the Lone Star Outdoor News’ newsroom dog, and I were fortunate enough to be invited. “I hunt as often as I can,” Marshall said. “I get home and hunt maybe on Friday and then on Saturday, and then head back to Washington, D.C. on Sunday.” The Senator is considered one of the most ardent conservations on the Hill, and he is happy to talk about it rather than some more contentious political issues. “I embrace conservation,” he said. “The air and water are cleaner today than when I was growing up.” While there are some great governmental programs, like CRP and EQUIP, Sen. Marshall said it’s not programs that produce the real results. “It’s not the federal government that breeds conservation,” he said. “It’s not a carbon tax that breeds conservation. It’s the innovating thinking and practices implemented by the American farmers and ranchers.”

Joshua Creek Ranch (Boerne, Texas Hill Country) was proudly established by its owners, Joe & Ann Kercheville, in 1990 and has been delighting hunting, sporting, and resort guests from all over the world now for more than three decades. “5-Star in every aspect” is how most guests describe the experience at Joshua Creek Ranch, and that sentiment is supported by a growing list of endorsements from the top sporting brands and lodge programs in the industry. “There is no greater compliment than to have our guests return frequently and consistently give us 5-star ratings, but it is also very rewarding and humbling to be recognized by brands we consider to be authorities in the outdoor sporting industry,” said Kevin Welborn, Managing Director at Joshua Creek Ranch. The latest recognition is from Federal Premium Ammunition endorsing Joshua Creek Ranch as one of seven lodges in the 2021 inaugural class of their exclusive Federal Select Outfitters Program. As stated on the program’s website, “There isn't one dimension of the total hunting experience that allows a lodge to be chosen as a Federal Select Outfitter. Just like a successful hunt ‘comes together,’ Federal Select lodges must perform at their peak in all areas of operation and guest experience.” Joshua Creek Ranch is always in the conversation when it comes to elite hunting lodges, especially with its awardwinning wingshooting program, luxury lodging, fine dining and resort amenities. “We have an incredible canvas with a breathtaking property and natural hunting habitat, but when you combine that with owners who continually invest in ranch improvements and a staff that genuinely

loves what they do, it’s easy to see why our customers keep coming back and we keep getting recognized,” Welborn said. Joshua Creek Ranch was one of only four charter U.S. destinations designated as a Beretta Trident Lodge in 2010, and the only lodge to receive the distinction in Texas. Beretta affiliated with Trident Lodges because they share two overarching themes: a commitment to excellence and a genuine, authentic passion for the sporting life. In 2014, Joshua Creek Ranch became an Orvis Endorsed Wingshooting Lodge. The Orvis Endorsement program represents the best lodges, outfitters, trainers, breeders and guides in the world. Since becoming a part of this prestigious program, Joshua Creek Ranch has been nominated as a finalist for Orvis Endorsed Wingshooting Lodge of the Year in five out of the last six years, including winning the distinguished honor in 2018. To round out a growing list of accomplishments, Shooting Sportsman Magazine launched an Endorsed Lodge Program in 2019 and quickly identified Joshua Creek Ranch as one of its original Endorsed Lodges — all of which have earned their endorsements by having established a longstanding reputation of excellence among Shooting Sportsman’s staff, writers and, most importantly, its discerning readership. All accolades aside, if you haven’t experienced Joshua Creek Ranch first-hand, you are missing out! Quail, pheasant, chukar and mallard duck hunting are the highlight, but this Texas Hill Country Paradise also features trophy axis and white-tailed deer hunting, Rio Grande turkey hunting, fly-fishing and two world-class sporting clays courses.

In a world where kids would rather text than talk, it’s important to find ways to bring families closer together. And there’s no better place for that to happen than on the land. For more than 100 years, Heritage Land Bank has shared a unique perspective — yours. It’s a way of doing business you won’t find at other banks. And it’s the reason why we’ve been able to help hunters, ranchers, farmers, families and agribusiness professionals finance rural lands, operations and equipment here in Texas for well over a century. Before we ever talk about money with you, we’ll talk about your family, your business, your goals, how you live, where you want to be in the future and how you hope to get there. Once we understand you and your goals, we’ll assemble a financing package that works best for you. So, no matter how you plan to use your land, we’ll help you reach your goal. We also promise to stay with you every step of the way. Because, since we opened our doors in 1917, we’ve never sold a single loan to another bank. Not one. And that’s a policy we don’t intend on changing any time soon.

GIRLS ONLY HUNTING & FISHING SKILLS CAMP

2022 CAMPS

Girls Hunting Camps Boys Hunting Camps Boys Bass Fishing & Fly Fishing Camps Boys Saltwater Fishing Camps

Look around the Dallas Safari Club show, on TV or on social media and you’ll see women, ages 30–50, are the fastest growing segment of the outdoor industry. Unfortunately, that’s not so true for girls 9–16, an age the outdoor industry should be focusing on to ensure there are more girls and women in the outdoors to slow the declining trend of hunting, fishing and shooting sports involvement and license sales among today’s youth. Outdoor Texas Camps and the Sportsman’s Club of Fort Worth are committed to changing that. Outdoor Texas Camps has been hosting summer camps that focus 100 percent on introducing and developing outdoor skills in today’s girls and boys, ages 9–16, for the past 18 years. The Sportsman’s Club of Fort Worth has committed funds to offer girls in the DFW and North Texas area a $400 scholarship to offset the cost of attending one of their Hunting, Fishing & Outdoor Skills Camps, while spots are available. At camp, the girls will receive one-on-four instruction on Rifle & Handgun, Trap & Skeet, Archery, Fly Casting & Fly Tying, Fishing and Camping & Survival in a safe, fun environment, as well as attend an onsite Hunters Education course. For more information on how you can apply for a $400 scholarship to start your daughter or granddaughter building skills, character and memories in the outdoors, contact Peter Velasco at Outdoor Texas Camps below.

IF "NEVER-BEFORE-FISHED" WATER DOESN’T INTEREST YOU, DON’T READ ANY FURTHER... The River - Rio Bateria Acute Angling is always pushing fishing’s final frontier. So, when the Wai-Wai tribe in Brazil’s Amazon basin invited us to analyze the fishing waters in the mountainous, uninhabited, northern part of their reservation, we didn’t hesitate. We quickly got our gear and logistics in place, filed our documents and licenses and headed for the fast waters of the upper Rio Bateria. Our goal was to complete a preliminary small-scale analysis of this untouched region. What we found in four short weeks was so galvanizing that we’re coming back for a full-scale exploratory trip! The Focus - Unexplored Waters, Exotic Variety We’ve already found tons of chunky fast-water peacock bass up to 15 pounds, ferocious 20-plus pound fanged payara, huge wolfish up to 30 pounds, big bicuda, pacu, and pescada and an entire array of the Amazon’s famous giant catfish. We’re not even sure yet what else lurks in these waters. But, of course, that’s why we do this. This trip is for the hard-core angler with a streak of exploration, adventure and discovery in their blood. If you itch to be the first person to cast at an untouched stretch of water, then our new Exploratory trip is the way to scratch it. Remote and inaccessible, it’s accessed only by Floatplane. Accommodations are private safari-style tents. We’ll take groups along with us during November and December of 2022 to fish ACUTE ANGLING this exclusive Indian Reservation. Space is limited to eight ☎ (866) 832-2987 anglers per group. If this is your kind of trip, let us know. ACUTEANGLING.COM BOOTH 2129

CREATE YOUR PRIVATE PARADISE Shoreline Consulting is working with landowners across the South to turn their properties into rural retreats that will be enjoyed for generations. Shoreline provides turnkey design, construction and renovation of your ranch or farm property, enhancing its natural beauty to create a private paradise. The company specializes in properties featuring lakes and ponds, enabling landowners to enjoy amazing views and endless recreational options for fishing, swimming and boating. “There has been a real shift in ranch ownership, and there aren’t enough contractors to go around,” said President John Jones. “A ranch then can become like owning a boat or an airplane — the hassles can take away from the joy. We solve that.” Shoreline Consulting will help with lake design and construction, and with important ranch items like water lines, food plots and deer stands. The company will work with architects and engineers designing the house, buildings and other structures on the ranch to maximize sightlines and the aesthetics of landscape features. “The more we work on these projects, the more the customers like it,” Jones said. “We do what your local

earth movers do, just better because there is a specific purpose and design. You end up with a better finished product for the same monies.” Some landowners want a lake for recreation, like swimming and even water skiing, while others want a trophy bass fishery. Most want some level of both. Either way, expert planning is key in making sure your property goals are met. That’s where Shoreline Consulting comes in. It’s a full-service, professional lake design and development service. From the initial planning phase, to creating a recreational lake or fishery in line with the owner’s objectives, to building, stocking and servicing the lake, Shoreline Consulting does it all. Expert biologists scientifically develop the correct ecosystem for the fish in a private fishery. Shorelines, docks, swimming areas and vegetation control are planned with the owner’s long-term goals in mind. With top-level expertise from Shoreline Consulting and its sister company, Lochow Ranch & Lake Management, you’ll create a legacy in your ranch and lakes for future generations to enjoy.

HUNTING ADVENTURES FROM ALL CONTINENTS Mike Honeycutt’s World of Hunting and Fishing is part taking you along on his hunting and fishing adventures and part travel guide. For the author, there’s nothing more exciting than a remote trip with great scenery. In his second book, he shares a travelogue that speaks to his passion for traveling the world to exotic locales to hunt and fish for unusual animal species. In the book’s 138 pages, Honeycutt narrates stories from all over the world on all continents. From the savannas of northern Cameroon to the jungles of southern Cameroon, and from the mountains of the Rocky Mountains to a Himalayan tahr hunt in the mountains of New Zealand, he describes an array of real-life experiences and excursions. He tells about bird hunting in Argentina, turkey hunting in Old Mexico, and looking for the Gobi argali sheep in Mongolia. Honeycutt, a Missouri resident, has crisscrossed the world, experiencing an array of terrain, cultures, religions, food and personalities, all weaved into his adventures. The book isn’t so much a travelogue or a how-to hunting guide, but rather an exploration in narrative form of one man’s love for hunting and fishing across all cultures and lands.

“I didn’t really intend to write a book when I kept the journals,” Honeycutt said. “I’m just trying to tell about world travels into remote places. If you want to go to those kind of places, it takes a lot of preparation.” Mike Honeycutt’s World of Hunting and Fishing carries a hardcover price of $33.99, but is available in hardcover ($26.99); softcover ($13.99); E-book ($3.99) or Audio ($9.99) at his website below.

LAKES, MANAGEMENT TAKE CENTER STAGE Ranch owners have spent more time at their properties the past few years than any other. And often, they need some help. “There has been a significant renewed interest,” said Lochow Ranch Pond & Lake Management owner John Jones. “I’ve seen more property utilization this year than in any of the last 17 years.” Lochow Ranch both builds and manages lakes and ponds, and Jones said construction of new lakes is at an all-time high. “We’re building more new ones than ever,” Jones said. “There has been an urban rush into rural areas. People are working from their ranches or using them as getaways with extended family.” What about the fish in your lakes or ponds? “Having a sound monitoring program is essential for maintaining self-sustaining fisheries,” Jones said. “Each lake on your property is an individual entity, only all of your animals are hidden from sight.” The program deals with familiar problems, including drought, heavy rains and mitigation of predator impacts. “We’ll talk about how to establish fundamental management practices (feeding/fertilizer programs, habitat improvement, bass harvest, vegetation control) and how having a firm foundation can help your lake thrive through seasonal disturbances (flood, drought, predators),” Jones said.

The recent pandemic has had a positive side effect when it comes to rural properties. “So many of our clients say they are doing what they do for their kids and grandkids,” Jones said. “This year, they actually used the ranch and lakes with them, and it was even better than what they imagined.” The past few years have created some new dynamics in ranch ownership. “We’ve seen an increased focus on year-round amenities at the ranch,” Jones said. “Fishing pressure is up tenfold. Docks are a popular new feature for families who want to spend time fishing, swimming and entertaining by the lake. And we’re seeing an influx of first-time ranch owners who want help with everything from lakes to deer feeders and hunting blinds.” Lochow Ranch’s biologists and fleet of trucks are based in Bryan, Texas, from where they manage more than 6,000 lakes in Texas and its surrounding states. Lochow Ranch also has a monthly retainer program where fisheries biologists visit the property monthly, closely monitoring your lakes and addressing potential problems. In all of the company’s services, the goals and preferences of the landowner are paramount in creating a personalized ranch for the whole family to enjoy.

GARY COOLEY FINE ART: THE AFRICAN COLLECTION

Visit us at DSC Booth

#1447

It’s been a long time since he has been to Dallas Safari Club’s convention, but Gary Cooley is still making and shipping beautiful artwork around the world. You may have heard that Gary and Karen Cooley closed their Collection Gallery in scenic Sisters, Oregon, but Gary is still creating unique sculptures, now featured at Hood Avenue Art. Cooley has spent years fishing, hunting, hiking and running rivers throughout the Northwest. During these trips, he sketches, photographs, sculpts or paints the scenery and wildlife around him. His sculpting process blends observation and technique, carefully considering every detail, contemplating form and movement and incorporating variations in texture, light, shadows. — and attitude. “Retirement from art will never happen,” Cooley said. In addition to creating new works and commissioned pieces, he looks forward to seeing you in 2022.

BUYING OR SELLING A RANCH? THINK RANCH INVESTMENTS Since 1982, Ranch Investments has emerged as one of the leading ranch brokerage firms in the state of Texas. Historic sales of 1.4 million acres totaling nearly $1 billion in value have established our prominent place in the market. Initially based in Austin, the primary marketing efforts were focused in the six counties surrounding Austin and the South Texas Brush Country. During the past 10 years, brokers and agent representatives have been added in 12 locations, allowing us to better serve the entire state of Texas. The founder, Kenneth O’Meara, developed a concept that brought together a team of associates with varied backgrounds in farming, ranching and land ownership. Our associates have extensive knowledge in wildlife management and commercial hunting, oil and gas production, row crop and irrigated farming, equine centers, cow, calf and feeder operations as well as real estate development. In 2008, John Ed Stepan took over the helm at Ranch Investments and manages the daily operations of the firm. Along with his expert staff, he works alongside his team of associates to assist them in any way and works directly with clients. As a Life Member of the Dallas Safari Club, John Ed has supported numerous wildlife conservation efforts over the years. His background is varied and unique including International hunting consultant, game ranch development, commercial hunting operations, rural land development, commercial real estate and

mineral production. Adhering to its roots, Ranch Investments is actively engaged in the marketing and acquisition of working farms and ranches. And since 2008, a new set of benefits has become available to our customers. With our network of accountants, attorneys, qualified intermediaries (for 1031 Exchanges) and real estate brokers we have the team of professionals to assist you in the sale of your property and the reinvestment of the proceeds. Many times we encounter sellers who own property of significant value that has been in the family many years, resulting in a low cost basis, and the tax implications can be significant. We work to develop a strategy such as utilizing the 1031 Exchange to reinvest the proceeds tax deferred into income producing properties. On the opposite end of the spectrum is the firsttime landowner, whether someone seeking a weekend getaway or a working land investment. We carefully listen to our clients’ objectives, develop a plan and locate the ideal property. After the purchase, we offer a full range of consulting services in ranch development for maximum enjoyment and utilization. Our expert team will assist you in taking an undeveloped piece of property and build lakes, roads, game fences, barns, houses, lodges and runways. Utilizing our network of wildlife biologists, we will develop a plan for the propagation of native and exotic game, migratory and

upland game birds. For 40 years, Ranch Investments has been trusted by families, foundations, corporations and trusts to represent them in their rural real estate transactions. Our reputation is based on honesty and integrity, so you may rest assured that Ranch Investments will always be by your side.
