Ample Alaska Salmon,

fun at McDougall Lodge

We hit the Yentna River about as hard as we could, fishing all the good holes that our young guide, Grady Boren, had discovered in the prior weeks. The big Alaskan river was flooding, muddy and hard to navigate, but we learned quickly that the salmon were there. All we had to do was slow-roll the spinners in front of their face.

The bite was soft but the fight was explosive and the fish did not like the landing net. Boren quickly mastered the flying fish and proudly added them to the stringer.

Our boat mates, David Wasson and Steve Garrett, became “lifetime” friends in about the first hour of fishing. There was never a dull moment or time without laughter the rest of the trip. I’m sure the other fishermen on the river wanted us to turn down our favorite fishing song, but that never happened until we caught the first fish each day. Even Grady asked, “Are you still playing that song?” after a slow start one day.

Most days, Denali showed us her majestic beauty from 65 miles away and looked like a fake backdrop for some of our photos.

As the river lowered, the water cleared and the fishing continued to surprise us. Thirty-plus fish days were normal and we fished with fly, spinners and spoons, changing it up when the action slowed.

The lodge staff was friendly and treated us like we owned the place. The food was plentiful and delicious. The cabins were comfortable and clean. On two nights, the staff hosted a horseshoe and cornhole tournament, and everyone joined in. A few lucky ones may have won a little extra cash.

We enjoyed more clear, good-weather days than we should have, being in Alaska, and as the time to leave neared, we were reminded again of how great the fishing can be.

The last night was spent on the beach in front of the lodge catching fish after fish. Grady smiled again each time he took another salmon to the cleaning house. Come by the Lone Star Outdoor News booth (2852) and I will show you a thousand more photos from our trip.

MEMORIES WITH BERETTA

There is nothing like Beretta Gallery for connoisseurs of fine guns, clothing and accessories.

Browsing through the Dallas Gallery, one of three in the U.S., you’ll wonder if you’ve walked into your favorite clothing store/art gallery in Italy. As you turn the corner, you’ll realize you’re in your favorite gun shop. Also in the mix is fine home goods and hunting and shooting accessories.

You wonder, “How do they get all of this in here?”

Most shooters know about Beretta, an Italian gun manufacturer established about 500 years ago by the same family that is running it now. And at Dallas’ Beretta Gallery, there is much more.

For its partners in conservation, like the Lone Star Outdoor News Foundation and Park Cities Quail, the Gallery hosts events throughout the year.

For its clients, staff at the Gallery guide hosted hunts, bringing customers more than what takes places at the store, giving them opportunities to experience new adventures in the outdoors and meet new people.

And now, any inventory at either the Dallas or New York Beretta Gallery is available online at berettagalleryusa.com, said Dallas Gallery manager Cory Mays.

“You can purchase firearms off of it,” Mays said. “If we don’t have it and New York does, we can get it to you. And it gives everyone, whether they can get to a store or not, access to explore and see the unique items we carry specifically for the galleries.”

Who doesn’t enjoy a trip into the world’s finest sporting good store? In Dallas, stop by the Beretta Gallery in Highland Park Village and see for yourself.

HUNTING IN ACTION WITH

KAMBAKO SAFARIS

Jay Presti, host of Blue Collar Adventures, has been hunting for the past 6 years with Chapungu-Kambako Safaris. In 2022, Jay took a trip to Africa, this time to Mozambique and South Africa in search for leopard, buffalo and plains game.

“I have been so fortunate to not only hunt Africa but be surrounded by the right people,” Presti said. “Chapungu-Kambako has become part of my family, and when I decided to do a 34-day trip, you can imagine the anticipation I had to start this journey. With a leopard and a buffalo on my wish list in the Niassa this would prove to be one of the most epic hunts ever. Kambako main camp was a dream come true and as wild as it gets! However, with a leopard hunt there lies work and long days ahead but “hard work pays off.” This along with one amazing PH, Ryan Cliffe, we were able to harvest a mature tom in daylight. My focus then shifted to buffalo and after days of tracking bulls, it was getting to the end of the trip. We were among them every day but just could not close the deal. But our fortune turned and PH Darren Ellerman found a fresh track. My last chance! The sticks came out and with some serious concentration a Hornady solid put a beautiful 42inch Dagga Boy down.”

Presti then moved to South Africa.

“My next stop was Rietvaley just outside Lydenburg. This was a new area with a specific focus on bowhunting. The picturesque mountains and plentiful game made it one for the books,” he said. “We captured some outstanding sits with results that bow hunters dream of. After a successful seven days with a nyala, kudu and baboons in the salt, my PH, Nicolai Raubenheimer, and I headed for the famous Kalahari Oryx Reserve.

It was time to adapt to another style of hunting.

“This is open country with long-range shooting opportunities. At Kalahari Oryx there are wild lions, black and white rhinos, Cape buffalo and all the plains game species one could ever imagine. With 200,000-plus acres, the opportunity at your dream trophy is abundant. I managed to harvest a steenbuck, oryx, springbuck, zebra, waterbuck and a beautiful sable with some of them at amazing longdistance shots.”

Presti’s 34-day safari came to an end, but viewers of the show will experience the trip.

“But these properties are so exceptional that only visiting them in person can do them justice,” Presti said. “To be able to stay with the same outfitter for this many years and to simultaneously undergo so many diverse experiences is rare. With six countries in their portfolio, Chapungu Kambako Safaris can complete anyone’s quest for Africa.”

The Evolution of Animal Artistry

Mike dedicated a lifetime to honoring wildlife in all its forms. As a guide, a hunter, a world-traveler and conservationist, his focus was to always present animals in their inherent beauty and imbue in his works a regard for their natural and sublime grace. To carry out that vision, Mike handpicked and trained a unique group of artisans and craftspeople. He instilled in them his same sensibilities and work ethic. In turn, he managed to assemble a unique group of professionals who continue to seek the same quality and workmanship his customers have always sought and expected. The “Art of the Animal” has never wavered.

Animal Artistry is renowned for its quality and impeccable unifying of the animal and its habitat, and this has been the hallmark of its high regard and reputation in the industry. Mike’s artistic representation and appreciation of wildlife were not limited to taxidermy alone. He was a skilled painter and sculptor, and his later years were spent in his home studio where he continued finding the inspiration to represent the natural world in oil and bronze. His unique and limited edition works survive him with an available and extensive online catalog of his paintings and bronzes. To quote one of Mike’s guiding maxims:

“Your experience doesn’t end with the kill. At Animal Artistry, we create works of art that complete and extend the hunt, bringing cherished memories back to you each time you view your trophies. We honor the hunt, the hunter, and most importantly, the majestic creatures.”

Animal Artistry holds Mike’s philosophy as the heart of our standards and expectations for what we produce. It is our continued mandate.

We are still here, still producing the quality work you’ve come to expect, and are still carrying on Mike’s legacy in honoring the art of the animal.

Kathleen Boyce, CEO, as well as management and staff thank all of you for your continued support, patronage and friendship.

We prepare for 365 days to GO HUNTING each year. Carefully planning the precious vacation time. Preparing and planting food plots, maintaining protein feeders and water sources year around. We have gathered outdoor life’s essentials from an axe to zip ties, with continuous concern about forgotten items. And recently, tuned the off-road vehicle as well as the rifles and shotguns.

You get the Idea! This is a complex plan, requiring thoughtful investment of time and resources. Each participant generally brings their favorite hunting rifle or shotgun, a family heirloom or possibly the latest high-tech custom rig. Remember year’s past, these are often the only devices for which there is not a SPECIFIC, SAFE, SECURE PLACE to carry each of them within the off-road vehicle.

If you or friends endured this avoidable dangerous circumstance and struggled to find a permanent solution, it’s time to consider the TEXAS HOLD ‘EM two-gun, vehicle specific racks for your off-road application.

You’ve heard the phrase, and at Fusion Thermal it’s the reason we can make the industry’s boldest statement: Our operating system is so easy to use you’ll likely never read the instructions.

T3 Control System

Don’t

Let Your Fingers Get Lost in the Dark

Our highly intuitive three button control system with center tower makes using your scope simple and easy. Every command is at your fingertips, and the Center Tower evenly splits the control panel, so you’ll never be confused about what button you’re going to press. We thought this a particularly good idea since you’ll be using it in the dark most of the time.

WAVE Thermal Sensor

Same Money, Better Performance

Is it possible for one thermal scope to dramatically outperform everything else in its class? Yes, so don’t make the mistake of shopping by specifications alone or you just might get burned. Our WAVE thermal sensors push the limit of what is technically possible and set the standard for image quality, ruggedness, and long life. So, before you plop down your hard-earned cash make sure you do a side-by-side to any similarly priced competitive alternative. We think you’ll find the difference to be clearly obvious.

XGEN Alloy Housing

Plastic is for toys. Metal is for tools.

It’s a fact, thermals produce heat, and heat is the enemy of all thermal devices. If you don’t get the heat out operational performance will degrade, and long-term internal damage is a certainty. Our XGEN (Next Generation Alloy Body) shields your expensive investment in a metal clad of armor, and our high-end AL6082 Conductive Structural Alloy displaces heat at an astounding 71,900% better than plastic. You don’t think of your thermal as some cheap plastic toy. Why should it be built like one?

Big Game Dreams

From college student to PH

You wouldn’t expect a college student to suspend her education plans to become a professional hunter in Africa, but for Reese Ferguson, a hunt for the elusive kudu led her down an unexpected path.

The kudu was top on the list for Ferguson’s first trip to Africa with her father, Rue.

On the last day of the hunt, she got it done and the grey ghost dropped mostly submerged in a river which ran between a deep ravine. Ferguson and her guide, Dewyk, of Red Sands Safaris, waded into the frigid waters and swam the kudu downriver where they could pull it onto dry land. The whole camp had come out to watch the unusual retrieve.

It was a bonding experience with her PH and a moment Ferguson couldn’t get out of her mind.

“That was the experience where I knew, OK, I want to do this for a living,” she said. “I knew I wanted to be in the hunting industry. That trip to Africa was the best experience of my life.”

Ferguson was raised in South Texas hunting with her father near San Antonio.

“I grew up on ranches, hunting with my dad,” Ferguson said. “Our time spent hunting was our time to bond and I just loved it.”

The end of the month-long trip to South Africa with her father came and went. Ferguson found herself at Baylor University, studying archaeology but yet feeling unfulfilled.

“I felt like I had another purpose and I knew I wanted to incorporate hunting into my career somehow,” she said.

Halfway through her sophomore year, Ferguson still had that urge to do something different. One day, she searched “The best hunting schools in the world” and found The Northern Cape Professional Hunting School in Vanderkloof, South Africa.

Ferguson applied and was accepted into the program, but she waited until after she was accepted before telling her parents she would be moving to Africa for a seven-month professional hunting program.

“I was the only American who had ever attended the school,” Ferguson declared proudly.

Ferguson was one of two females in the 20-person course and quickly learned Afrikaans to keep up with the lessons. They spent countless hours in the field, studying, learning the plants and animals, aging and scoring animals, tracking, hunting and even running up mountains for physical fitness. Between courses, the students had multiple week breaks. Ferguson took advantage by working as an assistant guide, getting her scuba certification and traveling around the massive continent.

After she had graduated, Ferguson stayed in Africa a few months before returning to Texas.

She hunted more than 20 animals during that time, not including the ones from her previous trip.

“I think my favorite has to be the Cape buffalo,” she said. “I shot it at 20 meters. You could smell him, I was so close. You really can’t get better than that.”

Many people who have hunted in Africa might have a zebra rug in their home. Ferguson has one that she skinned herself.

“I hunted a Hartman’s Zebra in the mountains of the Northern Cape,” she said. “It was freezing cold and I didn’t have shoes on because we were trying to be so quiet. But when we found a small herd between these mountains and I was able to take him, it was one of the best experiences. It was such a hard hunt, but the reward was amazing.”

Ferguson and her PH, Dewyk, remain friends and Ferguson got the chance to guide alongside him during her training on the dark continent.

What’s next for this new and unusual PH?

“For the next few years, I plan on spending my time studying conservation and hunting, making myself the best hunter and PH that I can be,” Ferguson said. “I would love to have a TV show someday, but I have a lot of work to do before I would even be able to get there. So for now, I’m hunting on the ranch with dad, and plan to hunt an aoudad soon.”

When it comes to buying or selling a ranch, nothing beats the team of a great, local broker combined with nationwide backing.

In northern Texas, that local broker is Jackie Webb, with a seven-county territory spanning from Stonewall to Stephens counties.

“I started with Whitetail Properties 9 years ago,” Webb said. “I grew up in Graham and spent my life hunting in all of these areas. Our brokers are great — they are tech-savvy and marketingsavvy.”

Potential buyers often aren’t aware of how to accomplish what they want on a new piece of property, and a local broker and hunter can be a lifesaver.

“They haven’t done this before,” Webb said. “We can walk them through the process and give local referrals for buildings, barndominiums, water, electric and everything else they need.”

Webb said there is a benefit to a local broker working with a national company, with brokers in 38 states.

“We are called Land Specialists,” he said. “I’m a local 5th-generation Texan working for a nationwide company. It’s a fabulous company founded by hunters and farmers that stand by its land specialists. We serve our clients to make sure the right thing is done at all times and have an excellent track record of accomplishing our client's goals.”

Webb has two new listings he is excited to showcase to buyers at the DSC show.

“One is a high-fenced operation south of Graham,” he said. “The other is a sportsman’s paradise in western Jack County — it has a cabin and as much water as I’ve seen for a smaller property.”

The overall market for rural property is still strong, Webb said.

“Texas is always a seller’s market,” he said. “The big places are moving as fast as ever. The smaller market, when the buyer needs financing, has slowed a little due to interest rates. But there are plenty of buyers waiting to pick things up if prices drop.”

At the DSC convention, Webb said the Whitetail Properties footprint is well established.

“Our booth stays full all day long,” he said. “People stop and talk and then come back for specifics on properties. It’s been great.”

SASKATCHEWAN – A FISHERMAN’S DREAM

Aboard a floatplane in route to a distant ‘far north’ fishing lodge in northern Saskatchewan, I look down at the thousands of remote islands and lakes and wonder if anyone has ever fished these pristine waters. The area, part of the Canadian Boreal Forest, is a vast wilderness with countless lakes and rivers teeming with big northern pike, lake trout, walleye and Arctic grayling, most, I’m sure, have never seen a fisherman’s lure!

Through the years, I have had the opportunity to fish out of many of these lodges and the best advice for any avid fisherman contemplating his or her first fishing trip ‘up north’ is to get busy and plan your trip next summer. Fishing usually begins after ice out in early June and lasts until sometime in September.

The old adage, “getting there is half the fun” is a fact when heading up north to fish. You will more than likely take a floatplane to your destination and your adventure begins the minute those floats leave the water or runway. I’ve fished several camps, from the ‘do-it-yourself’ to full-service lodges complete with chef and guides, and enjoyed every one of them. Some camps furnish a floatplane into and out of camp, cabin, boat motor and fuel, fish cleaning, etc. and the guest fishes on their own and prepares their own meals. This type of camp is better suited for experienced anglers, but catching fish is not difficult in these remote waters. With a few tips and proper baits, most anyone can be successful. Some of the remote lakes are best known as ‘trophy destinations’ for huge lake trout or northern pike and others for almost nonstop fishing for walleye, pike and grayling. The truth is there is always the possibility of catching a giant pike or lake trout in most all of the lakes.

I remember my first trip up north to fish. Contemplating all the planning and arrangements to actually set foot on the remote camp situated only a few miles from the Northwest Territories seemed mind-boggling. I quickly learned just how important and helpful an experienced outfitter can be. Once the dates were set, all I had to do was book the airline flight from Texas to Saskatoon and my outfitter took care of the rest, including scheduling the floatplane flight into and out of his camp. Scheduling and arranging the floatplanes is usually included in the cost of the trip and handled by the outfitter.

Through the years, I have helped lots of Texans plan their Saskatchewan fishing trips and without exception, they all came back vowing to “go again next year.” There are many fishing options and an angler needs to decide which is better suited to his desires. If you love fishing, it’s time to make that first trip up north. It’s a good bet that it won’t be your last!

Meeting every need with Kenetrek Boots

When I thought about all the boots and gear we offer and how our customers pretty much led us here by sharing what they wanted, it took me back to the beginning. Kenetrek boots were born out of our passion for sheep hunting and our desire to find a pair of boots that wouldn’t leave our feet all beat up and screaming in pain when we strapped on a heavy pack, picked up a rifle or bow and headed above the treeline for a week of chasing sheep in rough weather.

Since then, we’ve continued to design, test in the field, modify and repeat… regularly. We weren’t surprised that hunters of all kinds were just as passionate about what they do, but we were surprised by some of the requests our customers began sending our way. They wanted the same lightweight comfort and durability their recreational boots gave them in their work boots.

We answered with the Lineman Extreme, an ASTM approved safety-toe boot that linemen and other outdoor workers countrywide are raving about. But the letters kept coming.

Our wildland firefighter friends asked for a firefighting boot with the same features as our mountain boots, so after two years of a meticulous design process, we passed rigorous heat and flame testing and proudly introduced our Wildland Fire Boot. Sure, they loved our new K-73’s — a one-piece, vulcanized rubber sole that perfectly balances a soft biting grip with bombproof

durability — but they missed the incredible comfort of the Mountain Extreme upper. So we redesigned our Mountain Guide series to use the same proven, field tested Mountain Extreme upper along with our very aggressive, deep-tread K-73 outsoles.

Our guide and outfitter friends kept pushing us to build a boot that kept Kenetrek’s legendary allday comfort, but in a platform with stability that matched a plastic boot — so who were we to argue?

We’ve introduced the Guide Ultra — combining our EverStep removable nylon brace staves, providing incredible support for heavy pack loads with our Kenetrek K-73 outsole, the gold standard for high traction yet comfortable outsoles. And then there’s our family of Low Hikers: The Bridger Low Hiker, waiting for a punishing trail run to conquer; our Corrie II Hiker, a seriously tough yet lightweight nylon/leather hiker; and the new super-light, agile, ready-to-go anywhere all-leather Slide Rock Light Hikers. All three offer every kind of trail seeker out there exactly what they’re looking for, and they all double as the most comfortable knock-around town shoes on the planet.

So keep your eyes peeled for what’s coming up next — because as soon as our customers create the need — we’re on it.

Escape to Paradise at Reindeer Lake Lodge

Known for its renowned fishing opportunities for trophy northern pike, lake trout, walleye and grayling, Reindeer Lake is legendary in the Canadian North. Located just below the Northwest Territories on the border between northeastern Saskatchewan and northwestern Manitoba, it is placed perfectly in the northern part of the beautiful boreal forest and on the fringe of the Arctic Circle. Having some of the longest amount of shoreline in the world for a freshwater lake this almost 2 million-acre lake produces endless amounts of weed beds for a healthy underwater habitat — proving Reindeer Lake is one of the most amazing lakes in North America!

The lake is rated as the world's 22nd largest freshwater body; 9th largest in North America. With 5,500 islands and more than 5,700 miles of shoreline, you’ll have an endless array of protected fishing spots and world-class trophy fishing second to none.

Reindeer Lake Lodge is located on a remote private island on the northern half of Reindeer Lake, Saskatchewan. Being so remote, we have the north half of the lake all to ourselves. That’s about 1.3 million acres. Being so remote means you don’t have to travel far for the best fishing spots, you’re sitting right on top of some of the biggest freshwater giants only steps from the lodge. If you choose to explore and discover, there are an endless supply of new areas and breathtaking sites just waiting for you. It’s all up to you —you decide on the adventure you want.

We have a variety of modern and vintage-style

private cabins with hot showers, hotel style beds, fluffy towels, flush toilets, individually controlled propane cabin heaters and daily maid service. We limit the number of guests per week which along with your own private cabin provides an exclusive and intimate experience second to none.

Our 4,000-foot airstrip is right behind the lodge, meaning no additional floatplane rides, bus rides or bumpy boat rides after you land. Your private Reindeer Lake Lodge airplane will land on our beautiful, remote and secluded private island, and you’ll literally be steps away from the camp. We’ll be waiting to welcome you with breakfast and take your luggage to your private cabin.

Our chefs strive diligently all day to prepare a hearty, five-course dinner you are sure to love. Top it off with enticing, tempting desserts and you may need help to leave the table.

Reindeer Lake Lodge operates the best boats made for the north country; comfortable, custom built, 18-foot Lund boats, equipped with custom-built padded seats, raised casting decks and rod holders, all operated by professional guides. Powering our boats are new 50 hp four-stroke Yamaha outboards.

Visit our well-stocked tackle shop for an excellent selection of tackle and gear for both the gear and fly-fisherman.

If you want the fishing experience of a lifetime. Come join us for the 2023 season. We would love to have you experience the fishing trip many dream about.

In 2015, Ultimate Top Drives (UTD) embarked on a mission to create a new class of hunting, safari and off-road vehicles. Our hybrid-electric vehicles and clean sheet designs emphasize performance, efficiency and safety.

All of our vehicles are designed with a passion for hunting and the outdoors. From humble beginnings in the garage to our new, state-of-the-art engineering and manufacturing facility in San Antonio, UTD stands out among the rest. Combining eco-friendly designs with rugged reliability, no other top-drive vehicle can come close to the capability and quality found in Texas-made Ultimate Top Drives.

The current operating model in the utility-terrain vehicle industry involves the use of loud, gas-powered modified vehicles that disturb nature and were not created to meet the needs of the modern outdoorsman. At Ultimate Top Drives, we custom engineer all of our vehicles to perform at the highest level in any off-road hunting context, and we’re always looking to move the industry forward through new and innovative features like the patented articulating cab found on our flagship offering: The Cabra.

Ultimate Top Drives takes pride in helping sportsmen enjoy the outdoors, while staying committed to protecting the environment we all love to explore. Our hybridelectric engines play a key role in reducing greenhouse emissions and harmful chemicals expelled by other field-sport vehicles. The electric drivetrain also helps our vehicles maintain the element of stealth in any off-road environment allowing you and your passengers to get even closer to wildlife.

Regardless of your passion, Ultimate Top Drives sets a new standard for all-terrain vehicles and redefines the hunting experience.

ENGLISH SHOTGUNS WITH TECHNOLOGY

English gunmaker Longthorne would like to thank you all for the amazing welcome received last year and are very much looking forward to visiting DSC in January.

It’s been a full-on schedule this past year for the company. Besides having attended several events in the USA, including The US Open, World English and The Nationals, and driving 2,400 miles from Orlando to New Jersey and back in June for meetings, the company hasn’t wasted any time at the factory in England further developing and expanding their range, and as a result, has several new trigger plate models in their inventory.

Longthorne has also been working closely with the YouTube channel, TGS Outdoors and Jonny Carter, producing a range of videos about the company ethos, manufacturing, and products. Among which is their new trigger plate hunting gun, ‘The Venturer,’ a more traditionally embellished, lightweight game gun, with fixed chokes, 28- or 29-inch barrels and a game stock more reminiscent of a late 1900 Woodward style. If you would like to know more about the development, go to TGS Outdoors on YouTube and search ‘Longthorne.’

Having forged a great relationship with its original dealer, Pacific Sporting Arms (in California and Michigan) over the past few years, Longthorne aims to spread their wings a little and appoint some ‘very special’ dealers in other areas who can offer the same great service and backup, and these will be announced in the coming months. To keep informed about these and Longthorne’s products, subscribe to our email newsletter at longthorneguns.com. If you are interested in becoming a Longthorne dealer, please contact Longthorne direct.

Longthorne presented the new LG35 pistols at last year’s DSC convention. There have been a few ‘administrative delays’ with these, but they will be available in the coming months. If you are interested in distribution of these, Longthorne would love to hear from you.

Longthorne Titanium, with the world’s first fully machined titanium barrels, has been doing great this year with its light weight, minimal felt recoil and corrosion resistance. Perfect for game, the titanium demonstration model will again be on display at DSC.

Longthorne is proud to be supporting the 100th Anniversary of Griffin & Howe and the 25th Anniversary of Hudson Farm are delighted to be attending their showcase event in June 2023. In celebration of this, they will have demonstration models available to try, with all proceeds benefiting The American Custom Gunmakers Guild Education Foundation.

BOOK WITH AN ENDORSED OUTFITTER FROM ONE WHO KNOWS

In 2015 Craig Boddington hosted a 4-day workshop for a group of students from Kansas State’s Wildlife and Outdoor Enterprise Management program. It was a neat event where students were able to hunt with Craig on his Kansas farm. More importantly, they learned from him and other industry professionals about day-to-day operations, marketing and hospitality in the hunting industry.

This group of soon-to-be entrepreneurs impressed me and as we had dinner one night, I brainstormed ways to help them advance in their outfitting endeavors. It occurred to me that one human on Earth had the current knowledge and credibility to assure a hunter that an outfit was a good outfit. That person happened to be in the kitchen encouraging one of these students. I’ve worked with Craig for many years and I knew my first challenge was overcoming his Kansas humility. This did take some time. I enlisted many of the outfitters who benefitted from his positive editorial and television coverage over the decades. One thing he’s taught me is that if I’m going to gang up on a Marine, get a big gang, so I did. He came around to see the benefit his endorsement would have for the “Good Guys”. He’d seen enough debacles to know the value in assisting hunters with his knowledge.

Our program is simple but thorough. If an outfitter wants to join Craig Boddington Endorsed Outfitters (CBEO), they enter into a vetting process. First we look at the number of outfitters we have in an area. We

limit CBEO membership to 100 outfitters worldwide, so we also limit the number of members in a region to make it efficient for serious hunters. We then inquire with our contacts in the region, professional organizations and governmental agencies to ensure the outfitter’s reputation is squeaky clean. If this all checks out, either Craig or I hop on a plane and spend some days with the outfitter. It is an exhaustive and time-consuming process. We consider it essential as we protect Craig’s reputation, the reputation of our existing members and the time and money of our fellow hunters.

Booking a hunt isn’t the same as buying a taco. There are many websites offering outfitter reviews. I’ll trust darn near any American on a quality hamburger, because we eat lots of hamburgers. But that’s just not the case with hunts. There are also some hunter versions of Priceline and Expedia. Going cheap on a weekend trip to Cincinnati is one thing, but do you really want to lowball the trip of a lifetime where your safety and reputation are on the line?

Outfitting overseas took a beating due to COVID restrictions. CBEO did as well. But the CBEO family stuck together and now the opportunities are amazing. Look for our CBEO signs around the convention or use our directory advertisement and go directly to our member booths. You should also check our website. craigboddington.com because not all of our members are exhibiting for various reasons.

We like to say we’re “Helping the Good Guys Win!” Be part of it. Book with Confidence; Book with a Craig Boddington Endorsed Outfitter.

High performance, yet stylish women's hunting line

We believe in empowering the outdoorswoman to pursue her passions with confidence. I’ve been blessed to spend most of my life exploring our beautiful world. I believe it is our responsibility to tend to our earth utilizing its bountiful gifts, and protecting the resources it provides us. I find myself closest to God and at peace when I’m hunting in the outdoors with my soulmate and husband, Leo.

In 2016, I recognized I was not alone, and Azyre was born.

There are many other women who find inspiration, bond with friends and family, and enjoy life in the outdoors. It is my goal to recognize and empower these women to pursue their passions with confidence.

For years I have felt that the hunting apparel industry has overlooked women. We’ve been left to wear apparel fit for men only later to be modified for women, we’ve been offered designs that don’t reflect our true femininity, and we’ve suffered through a lack of features taking away from our experience in the outdoors. Rather than complaining about the status quo, I wanted to do something about it. I shared my vision with Leo and prayed about my idea. It became clear to me that I needed to create apparel as capable as the women who will wear it.

Our vision is to create high performance, yet stylish products and a brand that encourages women to achieve their outdoor pursuits. We believe we will conquer our goals through faith, positivity, and a focus on inspiring others.

What began as a small, one-man shop has transformed into a huge operation that specializes in African, North American and exotic mounts, and especially designing and creating trophy rooms.

Mike Baird and his wife, Jo, took a leap of faith in 1983 and started the Houston shop. Now, many customers have turned into lifetime friends. Years later, they are able to share all of this with their son, Frank, who literally took his first steps at the

After multiple trips to Africa and other continents around the globe, Mike and Frank share an exceptional knowledge of animals and how to display them in the best possible way.

Always looking for new ways to mount your trophies and preserve the memories of your hunts, they will surely bring your visions and dreams alive.

A few customers shared their impressions of B&B Taxidermy.

“Mike Baird, owner of B & B Taxidermy built this trophy room for me. It turned out fantastic. I have been a customer of Mikes for approximately 40 years. Mike designed and built the trophy room and hung all the animals for me. He also designed all the rock formations in the room. Besides the taxidermy and trophy room, Mike built bridges and fishing piers at my ranch. He also high fenced the ranch a few years backs. You will always be pleased with your dealings with Mike."

—Mike Vannata

"The guys are all done with the trophy room and headed back to Houston. I am absolutely amazed and shocked at how awesome the room turned out. I could not think of anything I would have done differently. Mike and his team are first class!"

—Monroe, Louisiana customer

Would you like your trophy room to have your friends and family gazing in awe? Stop by B&B Taxidermy’s showroom at 11030 Jones Road West to view the exceptional work of Mike, Frank and staff.

One of the “must have” features of today’s ranch or farm properties is a private lake or pond.

“There’s nothing quite like a lake to turn your rural retreat into something truly special,” said John Jones, president of Shoreline Consulting. “Considering the swimming, boating and fishing possibilities, a private body of water will become the recreational hotspot that your family and friends will love for decades.”

Jones’ company provides comprehensive private lake and pond design, construction and renovation services across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana.

“There are the benefits of increased property value, improved aesthetics and sightlines. But a lake or pond also introduces a new range of recreational possibilities,” Jones said. “Whether your dream is a trophy fishery, a beautiful pond for enhancing the view or a boating and swimming paradise, we will turn your dream into reality.”

With Shoreline’s lake design and construction experts, the work begins long before the first shovelful of dirt is moved.

The team starts by carefully assessing your goals for the lake and analyzing the property and its unique characteristics. Shoreline’s experts measure rainfall and the area’s watershed to determine ideal lake depth and proper slope, to plan the size and shape of the body of water. They evaluate building of dams, placing drains and liners, adding supplemental aeration and structural features, all considering whether you want swimming or water sports, or a trophy fishery, or some combination.

Once the planning is final, Shoreline brings the most up-to-date excavation and earth-moving equipment and a team

of certified professionals to build the lake.

Because Shoreline offers a turnkey lake creation service, this relieves landowners of having to find and manage excavation contractors.

“We do what your local earth movers do, just better because there is a specific purpose and design in place,” Jones said. “You end up with a better finished product for the same cost.”

The Shoreline team also can renovate an existing lake that is not living up to its potential, addressing issues like leaks or water level problems, erosion, dam structural issues and other problems.

Shoreline helps landowners not only with lake design and construction, it will work with architects and engineers designing your house, buildings and other ranch structures in order to maximize sightlines and landscape aesthetics.

“The ongoing drought conditions have created problems many landowners may not be aware of,” Jones said. “That’s when having our team on board can become critical in anticipating and responding to issues before they get out of hand and lead to unexpected costs down the road.”

Shoreline’s affiliated company, Lochow Ranch Pond & Lake Management, offers complete lake management services that can ensure the new body of water is the best it can be. The experts at Lochow Ranch will help you maintain a crystal blue lake or a healthy fish population that meets your goals.

“We’re proud of the many lakes we have built across the region,” Jones said.

“And we are equally proud that we have won the trust of landowners who want to make the most of their treasured rural properties.”

THE MOST REALISTIC UPLAND HUNT YOU’LL FIND

Quality habitat and exceptional birds. That’s the recipe for an enjoyable and memorable preserve hunt for quail, chukar and pheasant.

Some hunters have sworn off the activity, having experienced either low-flying or no-flying birds, or sparse cover making the birds visible.

At Santa Anna Hunting Area, the birds will bust out like they mean business, and the habitat is the best you’ll find.

Owner Eldena Stearns got started decades ago with her late husband, Gerry, and is well-known throughout the south for the state-of-the-art hatchery and the quality and flight ability of the birds she raises.

Now, she raises birds for specific landowners and, especially, for the Santa Anna Hunting Area.

When you head to the field, you’ll see thigh-high, grass-like cover and you might wonder what it is. The cover is Johnson grass, not a favorite in urban lawns, but a great, drought-resistant hunting cover.

While the grass is thick and tall, it’s surprisingly easy to walk through, and it doesn’t grab the toes of your boots.

The numerous fields in the shadow of Santa Anna Mountain are sized to make the experience good for the hunters and especially good for the dogs. Stearns’ French Brittanys stay mostly invisible to the hunters, as the 21-inch-high dogs are dwarfed by the cover.

During a hunt on a warm, January day last year, Dakota, the Lone Star Outdoor News newsroom dog, appreciated the well-placed water troughs in the cross-cut fields. The dogs can get a drink, although on warmer days they are likely to plop their bodies in the trough to cool off.

You won’t hear a bunch of shouting at dogs or whistles blowing when you hunt at Santa Anna. Stearns’ calm demeanor, even with her youngest pup, aptly named Trouble, shows her top-level dog training ability.

Having hunted pheasants in most states and both wild and pen-raised quail in Texas, Eldena’s birds are the most like a wild hunting experience. And, it’s right here in Texas.

In a tough year for the wild quail, it’s a great time to get out and chase some birds. You won’t be disappointed. The prices are extremely affordable, it’s within driving distance, and it’s as close to wild bird hunting as you’ll get.

well-appointed rural retreat. But many ranch and farm owners learn the hard way that maintaining that body of water can seem deceptively simple.

lake, whether it’s swimming or boating or a fishing hotspot for family and friends to enjoy,” explained John Jones, owner of Lochow Ranch Pond & Lake Management. “Many property owners like some combination of all three and our team can turn that dream into a reality.”

Lochow Ranch provides turnkey pond and lake management and maintenance services to landowners across Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma. The company also works in partnership with its affiliated company, Shoreline Consulting, to design and build new lakes and expand or renovate existing ones.

Some landowners think once a lake or pond has been built, it will naturally take care of itself with minimal maintenance. But that is simply not the case if you want a thriving fishery or a landscape water feature that will maximize the aesthetics and recreational possibilities for a property.

“Pond and lake management is best not left to chance,” Jones explained. “A properly maintained pond or lake will grace your ranch or farm with natural beauty and endless recreation options for generations to come.”

Lochow Ranch’s certified team of biologists and water maintenance experts provides the full range of lake and pond management techniques, including water quality and clarity testing and improvement, vegetation control and removal of pond weeds, liming and fertilizing, algae control, erosion and sediment control, identification and control of predators and much more.

most accurate inventory of a lake’s fish population. The company also provides fish stocking, including a full range of game and forage fish, as well as supplemental fish feeders that help spur growth.

These professional techniques take the guesswork out of maintaining your body of water and ensure you can make faster progress toward your goals.

“We can establish fundamental management practices,” Jones said.

“Having that solid foundation can help your lake thrive despite seasonal disturbances and broader environmental conditions.”

For example, many landowners have faced lake management challenges with the recent drought conditions across the region.

“These types of issues can create problems many lake or pond owners may not be aware of,” Jones said. “That’s when having a professional management service can become critical in anticipating and responding to the issues before they get out of hand and require more money to fix.”

Lochow Ranch’s biologists and fleet of trucks are based in Bryan, Texas. They manage more than 6,000 lakes across the region.

“Our aim is to help you reach your goals so you can sit back, relax and enjoy your beautiful body of water,” Jones said. “We will help you make a personal paradise for the whole family to enjoy for generations to come.”
