Get-A-Way from the crowds

n the sleepy little fishing village of Port Mansfield sits a hidden gem. To anglers who fish the Lower Laguna Madre, though, it’s a favorite spot. Sitting on the north shore of Port Mansfield Harbor is Get-A-Way Adventures Lodge, in an area known for smaller crowds and fewer boats than other more populated coastal spots. The fishing is what brings most people to the tiny village, and wade-fishing with artificial lures has been the go-to method of fishing at the lodge for years. Walk out the door of the lodge and the docks and boats are mere yards away. With a core group of top guides of Paul Johnson, Roy Garza, Ruben Garza, Pete Martinez, Mitch Richmond and Teddy Springer leading you to the best spots, landing speckled trout and reds will highlight the trip. At night, catch some trout above the underwater lights. The next morning, put on your clean clothes that have been laundered by the staff and do it again.

Rest assured, the staff will take care of your every need. General manager Sandra Garza, whose husband Ruben guides fishermen (and duck hunters) out of the lodge, will please your palate with her signature dishes, whether they be enchiladas verdes, grilled ribeyes, homemade lasagna and tres leches cake for dessert. “I have a good taste tester at home,” she said. Fishing adventures of a lifetime at Outdoor Texas Camp

s your 9- to 16-year-old son a fishing fanatic? If all your child wants to do is fish, Outdoor Texas Camp is the place for him this summer. Or, for more adventure, how about a camp at the Florida Keys? “It’s all they do,” said camp director David Todd. “Kids learn by repetition — when we have a fishing camp, we fish, fish, fish.” Bass fishing At last year’s bass fishing camp at Lake Bastrop, the 20 campers landed 800 bass from bass boats, kayaks and canoes. Campers learn more than just catching fish, though, with expert instruction on skills such as knot tying, the plethora of lure types and how to use them, how to operate a kayak or canoe while fishing, and more skills on camping and survival. “We teach all the fundamentals,” Todd said. “Cast netting, kayaking, knots, baits and lures. They learn how to fish every lure imaginable.” Michael Shipley, who was Todd’s first camper 13 years ago, obtained his wildlife biology degree from Texas A&M-Kingsville, was a guide at the Shiner Ranch and for the Lone Star Outdoor News Foundation and managed a West Texas ranch. He is now the full-time director of the Texas camps.

Is saltwater fishing your son’s obsession? This year’s three saltwater camps will be held at Bluff’s Landing in Corpus Christi. Campers fish in the bay with a guide, fish overnight on a barge, go flounder gigging or fish all night in the surf. Plus, all of the campers head out on an offshore boat. “The kids love the flounder gigging,” Todd said. “Last summer, the flounder were everywhere.” Casting instruction is part of the schedule, as is wade-fishing and throwing a cast net for bait. A tour of the fish hatchery rounds out the trip. And this year, Nick Motta, who makes rods in San Antonio, will teach campers how to make a rod, and they will be able to take the rod home with them. “Our great instructors are the secret to the camps,” Todd said. What about fly-fishing? The fly-fishing camp on the Llano River is led by instructor Kevin Hutchison, a wellknown fly-fishing guide on the Texas rivers. “It’s a smaller camp with only 12 campers,” Todd said. “Kevin is a great teacher, and they will come out as expert fly-casters.” How about a Florida Keys adventure? tain,” Todd said. “He has won numerous tournaments and he takes all five campers offshore twice on his boat, The Contagious. We have Jeremy Chavez from Pasadena who guides the kids flyfishing in flats boats. Last year, they caught tarpon and snook on fly rods and on other excursions caught reds, snook, tarpon, permit, snapper, grouper, mahi mahi and more. Finally, there is a shark excursion — the kids love that.” Other features include a full-time snorkeling coach, and the campers learn rigging, tackle and how to throw the giant cast net. Adults might wonder if a camp like this is available for them. “I haven’t had one dad that hasn’t asked me that,” Todd said. “We are going to do some father-son duos in 2017.” All of the campers at Islamadora, so far, have been from Texas, with 19 scheduled so far this summer. This year, Outdoor Texas Camp has entered into a sponsorship agreement with Cabela’s. The camps will be doing seminars at the stores’ Great Outdoor Days beginning

March 10 and Cabela’s will send a youngster to each of the camps. The bass camp takes 24 boys from age 9-16, while the three saltwater camps take 20 each. The fly-fishing camp takes 12. The camps cost $1,125. Other camps include a girls camp, archery camps, deer camp, waterfowl camp, and hunting camps. Head to Lake Buchanan

ater levels are normal for the first time in years, and the Lake Buchanan Conservation Corporation expects the fishing to be excellent this spring! The LBCC has been on the move, completing and planning a number of projects on the lake. The group completed installation of three 42-foot moveable docks along with improvements to the boat ramps in Llano County Park and Burnet County Park. The docks, portable and able to be moved up and down with the fluctuating water level, were purchased by the LBCC and are located in each county park and on Shaw Island. They are for public use to launch and land watercraft. Thanks to the LBCC, lake access will be increased and docking facilities are now available for use in times of medical emergencies. Placement of the docks is a joint effort between the LBCC, LCRA and Llano and Burnet counties. LBCC helps provide fish for the lake, too. Over the past several years, with technical guidance from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, LBCC has stocked Lake Buchanan with

more than 8,500,000 of the sunshine strain of hybrid striped bass (a genetic cross between a male striped bass and a female white bass). While Lake Buchanan has, for many years, been recognized as a “striper lake,” the hybrids are being caught in even greater numbers with catch sizes often exceeding 10-12 pounds. Hybrids are very popular since, pound for pound, they put up a better fight and tolerate the Central Texas heat better and continue to feed during the summer months. This month, the white bass, stripers and hybrids are beginning to run shad and are often seen feeding on top under the birds. This makes for some phenomenal top-water fishing usually early and late. As we move into March and April, the threadfin shad head to shallow water to spawn and the larger fish become tremendously active. During this time, it is not uncommon to take limits fishing into the wind while standing on the bank. TPWD conducts a survey of several fish species each year on both Lake Buchanan and Inks Lake. We at LBCC have coined this study the “State of the Lake” because it gives all concerned some really definitive information about the growth rates and productivity of the various spe-

cies. In 2016, the LBCC will stock 1,000,000 hybrid striped bass into Lake Buchanan and TPWD is planning to stock 350,000 stripers. The LBCC also is increasing fish habitat. The group has applied to LCRA for permission to place several artificial fish attractors at selective locations around the lake. In the past the LBCC had placed more than 2,000 cedar trees to be used to attract crappie and largemouth bass. The extreme low water conditions we have experienced the last several years destroyed the tree locations, therefore, they will be replaced with the artificial attractors which can be moved in times of low water. The fishing is beginning to crank up on the lake, there is lots of cover, and locals are looking forward to — as described by TPWD personnel — a “new lake effect” with fresh water covering the new shoreline growth. Tips for the busy season on the Coastal Bend Spring Break is a busy time on the Texas coast. But beaches are not the only destinations that attract crowds of visitors trying to squeeze as much enjoyment as possible into a week’s time. A fair number of these revelers stop short of the Gulf to enjoy bay fishing. And if spring-like weather cooperates with their vacation plans, relaxation can be elusive. Before anglers enjoy a day on the bay they must first decide on a launch site. On sunny weekends throughout much of the year, long lines form early at most boat ramps between Rockport and Corpus Christi. Crowds can double in size during Spring Break at the more popular ones. Boat owners who wish to avoid a frustrating start to their day can avoid this hassle by planning ahead and arriving at their chosen ramp at least an hour before sunup. This is the habit of many weekend fishing guides who launch from popular spots such as Goose Island State Park, Cove Harbor Marina and the municipal ramps at Aransas Pass and Port Aransas. This list would include any of the ramps along the JFK Causeway, such as Marker 37 Marina and Billings Bait. Crowds at a ramp often brings impatience from fellow anglers. Part of boating courtesy begins at the ramp. Backing down a ramp before preparing your boat, loading your gear or generally forcing fellow boaters to wait needlessly is especially frowned upon by anglers waiting in line to launch. Consideration should not take a spring break. And remember springtime brings high winds to the coast, rendering some bays dangerous and some ramps difficult to

negotiate. Nueces Bay, for example, is best on calmer days. There is a public boat ramp at the Marinaville Bait Stand. But if the parking lot is empty or nearly so, take the hint. Corpus Christi Bay also can be dangerous when winds are harsh. This also applies to the municipal boat ramp at the Corpus Christi Bayfront, one of the most scenic launch sites in the region. There is another ramp across the bay at Packery Channel. But conditions during a hard southeast wind might be difficult for novice boaters to manage. Not all lessons are hard-fought. Boaters who do their homework can discover launch sites used mostly by longtime locals. Some of these remote ramps might offer fewer amenities along with shorter lines. One such ramp is next to one of the nicest hotels in the Rockport area, across from The Boiling Pot restaurant in Fulton. If you stay at the Lighthouse Inn, you’ve probably seen it. If not, ask the desk attendant to show you. The Sandollar Resort & RV Park (sandollar-resort.com), also in Fulton, has a ramp for its RV and motel guests. The convenience might be worth the room rate. Fulton Harbor also has a small ramp that is seldom used on Fulton Beach Road (coastalbendfishing.com/boat-ramp/fulton-harborramp). Rockport Beach Park has a fairly popular public ramp. If you’re towing a boat they’ll waive the $5 park entry fee. Rockport’s Cove Harbor South offers a smaller ramp just south of the larger public marina on Business Highway 35 south of town. And on Lamar Beach Road, the St. Charles Bay

Boat Ramp (coastalbendfishing.com/boatramp/st-charles-bay-ramp) offers an alternative to the more popular Goose Island launch. Austwell Community Park offers a public ramp on San Antonio Bay farther north of Rockport. Rockport guides Don and Petra Schultz (greenhornetguides.com) suggested this one as an alternative to Hopper’s Landing, which they said may be too silted in for most boats until it’s dredged. There’s another ramp at the old Redfish Camp Marina on FM 1069 west of Rockport on Port Bay. Several marinas are between Rockport and the ferry landing at Port Aransas, but these tend to attract crowds. One of them, however, provides the rare convenience of boat rentals. South Bay Marina (portaransasboatrentals.com/boat_rental_rates_info) rents 16-foot Carolina Skiffs with small outboards at reasonable half- and full-day rates. They go quickly, so reserve one early. This advice also applies to booking a fishing guide during Spring Break. Most Coastal Bend guides are booked far in advance of this peak period. To narrow

your search, try the Coastal Bend Guides Association (cbga.org). Corpus Christi guide Len Girard (captainlensfishing.com), who spends most of his fishing time in the Upper Laguna Madre, knows how to avoid crowded boat ramps. The neighborhood of Padre Isles on North Padre Island has seven ramps for residents only. One of them is within a few blocks of Girard’s home. Don’t try using these on your own. You’ll risk having your vehicle and trailer towed away. And if you’re planning to launch from Bird Island Basin within Padre Island National Seashore, be prepared to encounter a fee along with the crowds. In addition to the park entry fee, which is $10 for a seven-day pass, there is a $5 day-use fee for the Bird Island ramp and parking lot (nps.gov/pais/planyourvisit/fees.htm). And know there are only four parking spaces available for vehicles without trailers. Parking elsewhere could get expensive. —By David Sikes
