Record-setting start to 2018 Lone Star Outdoor News In just over two months, anglers in Texas have set four state records and 34 water body records. The state records, all from the Sabine Lake area, are each for typical freshwater species — but the fish were caught in saltwater, establishing state saltwater records. Were the catches due to increased fresh water in the bay after the heavy rains that followed Hurricane Harvey? Maybe, to some degree, according to Ron Smith of Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, who maintains the records. “That’s possible, but I think some people just found a gap in the records,” Smith said. The record fish were largemouth bass, bowfin and channel catfish (with the first record already being broken this year), all fish known to inhabit brackish waters. On Jan. 5, Betty Vail, of Bridge City, landed a 5.37-pound channel catfish at Sabine Lake to set the first state record of the year. She topped that mark on Jan. 28 with a 7.43-pounder. Not to be outdone, Robert Vail landed a 6.81-pound bowfin to set another mark. On the Sabine River on Feb. 8, Matt Bertrand, of Orange, caught a 6.81-pound bowfin on a crankbait, another state record in saltwater.

New baitcasting, spinning reels from Shimano New fishing reels are coming this spring from Shimano. Baitcasting Shimano introduced the Bantam, its first low-profile baitcasting reel, 40 years ago. In late March, the new Bantam 150 MGL will be offered in six models and three gear ratios. “We went back to the legacy we built with the original metal construction reels, and took advantage of 40 years of ever-expanding technology,” said Trey Epich with Shimano’s product development staff. Bringing the rigidity of a machined round reel to a low-profile reel, anglers will experience the Bantam MGL’s “Core Solid Body” design. Among the many features is the super light MGL spool, especially helpful when casting lighter soft plastics and smaller hard baits. The sensitivity will be apparent. “You can feel the vibration of your lure going through weeds or rolling over a rock,” Epich said. The suggested retail price of all sizes is $349.99. Spinning Shimano’s new Stella FJ reels bring the company’s top technological advancements to its spinning reel lineup. In five models, the reels cover everything from panfish to sailfish. Anglers will notice new Shimano technology, including MicroModule II gear system, enhanced HAGANE concept constructed gear and body, X-Protect and SilentDrive. “We take smooth rotation to an even higher level with SilentDrive, and a long list of micro adjustments and enhancements to reduce any handle play and eliminate any clicking noise in all moving parts,” Epich said. The Stella FJ reels will be available in early April. Suggested retail prices begin at $699.99.

Power Tackle Rods is introducing its new, latest series of rods — the Pow R Point Series. The features of this unique Pow R Point blank combine to form a single unit that offers the perfect balance between durability, weight and sensitivity. Top sections are designed for meticulous lure presentation and feel, while bottom sections are devoted to staggering lift capability. In the middle is a transitional section that offers unmatched power, excellent control and a smooth blend between top and bottom. The Pow R Point blank is the lightest and strongest blank available. Combined with Recoil guides and Fuji seats, plus Power Tackles' designed moisture grooved grips and butts, Pow R Point will amaze you in performance, it is a beautifully made rod. “We want to take care of the fisherman,” said Tim Reneau of Power Tackle Rods, also a recent winner of the Texas Team Trail event at Sam Rayburn Reservoir. “You don’t give away durability when you reduce the weight with the Pow R Point rods. It has the finest components you can buy; it’s the strongest, lightest blank on the market, and it’s at a price the fisherman can afford.” The rods are used by Ray Hanselman on the B.A.S.S. Elite Series, and by
Strike King Pro Phil Marks, winner of back-to-back BFL tournaments and winner with Reneau at the Texas Team Trail event. Marks credits the wins in part to these new rods, saying these are the lightest, and strongest rods he has ever used — everything from cranking a 10XD to heavy flipping. “This series is our finest yet,” said Power Tackle Rods’ Judy Reneau. UP CLOSE OR LONG-RANGE, NIKON HAS YOU COVERED Whether it’s a bobcat or raccoon in very low light and just yards away, or a coyote coming in from the next pasture, you’re in good hands with Nikon’s BLACK FX products and the P-Tactical Spur. At close range, the P-Tactical Spur is the perfect optic for your carbine, pistol or shotgun. Its lightweight body is shockproof, waterproof (IPX7) and boasts 15,000 hours of continuous use on a single battery. An extra-wide field of view, 1X optics and unlimited eye relief aid in quick target acquisition, while Nikon’s TRUCOLOR coating minimizes the bluish tint common to reflex sights. The P-TACTICAL SPUR’s 3 MOA dot is adjustable to 10 levels of brightness — the initial two of which are night vision compatible. From a distance, the BLACK FX1000 will deliver your longest shots with confident precision. Competition-ready straight from the box, BLACK FX1000 integrates renowned Nikon optics into its first focal plane optical system for tack-sharp images and dialing functionality at any magnification and distance. Proprietary new glass-etched tactical reticles paired with precise, high-speed turrets allow fast, repeatable distance corrections and intuitive hold-off points. And for rapid return to your zero, the FX1000 debuts Nikon’s all-new BLACK Return-to-Zero integral zero-stop in the elevation turret. Nikon’s proprietary FX-MOA and FX-MRAD reticles were created expressly for the first focal plane optical system used in the BLACK FX1000 riflescope. Each reticle is designed to optimize the sight picture and provide the tools necessary for ranging, holdover and windage corrections. Illuminated reticle models with side-mounted
control offer 10 intensity levels of red illumination with an off switch between each step for quick, easy brightness adjustments. What if you don’t know the distance? The BLACK RANGEX 4K Rangefinder is the answer, as it provides 4,000 yards of extreme speed and precision. With more than 2 miles of ranging capability, the RANGEX 4K provides the speed, precision and consistency you need for extreme long-distance shooting. Featuring Nikon’s HYPER READ function for extraordinarily fast, positive measurements, the rangefinder’s integral monocular offers the bright, sharp view required for target spotting and acquisition. The quick and stable measurement response will be yours in 0.3 seconds, regardless of distance. With two different range modes, the Tru-Target technology allows you to range an object as small as a fence post, while distant target priority displays the range of the farthest target among a group of targets measured. The high-visibility red OLED display provides ideal contrast on distant targets with automatic or five stages of selectable brightness. For incline or decline shooting angles, the RANGEX is equipped with Nikon’s ID Technology that delivers the one number you need for determining your best shot.

THE SPRINGTIME WADE
By Craig Nyhus
Lone Star Outdoor News The anticipation of a spring wade-fishing trip for big speckled trout had the anglers itching to slide out of the boat. Leaving at first light, an early morning fog required the boat to slow to a crawl for a few minutes on the trip south. Finally, the first stop. You drop into the water, hoping your feet connect with the bottom quickly and the bay floor is firm. Then, there is the initial shock and gasp when the water reaches waist-high. During the wade, your feet connect with something. Grass? A rock? Something alive? You can’t see the bottom so you wonder what it was. You keep going, catching a few fish along the way. Then, the bottom gets softer. You nerve-rackingly wonder how far your feet will sink and how far you’ll have to go before you reach a firm foothold. The morning moves on, and you keep casting, catching a few small ones, but not what you’re hoping for. You work the lure along the bottom, changing your popping technique, looking for the strike. You're casting to each side, changing up your pace of retrieve, hoping that will change your luck. But the big girl never bites. Back in the boat and heading to the next spot, you
14 |
quickly shove some food in your mouth. The anglers' backs are tightening, and the eager chatter of the morning has faded to near silence. You get out again and keep casting. A cloud bank has formed along the beachfront and the winds pick up. More humidity is felt in the air. Water slaps at the waders’ backs, occasionally sending a few drops over the top and down. The Langmuir circulation lines create streams of foam on the water’s surface. A redfish hits your lure, exciting the angler for a brief moment after the strike, but the long, steady run of the red tempers the thrill. One angler drops more than 50 yards behind the line of waders. He’s either had a bad backlash or some equipment failure. You hope he’s not on his cell phone. During the last wade, with the anglers’ smiles dwindling and the wind howling, it was apparent that this may not be the day when a trophy trout gets hooked. The familiar, “Let’s call it,” is heard, and no one complains. No big sow trout were landed, but the smell of the air and the mud and the sounds of the water and the whir of the reel make it worthwhile. On the ride home, you’re ready to do it all again the next day. That big trout is still out there — waiting.
