NIKON’S LASERFORCE 1,900-YARD RANGEFINDER BINOCULAR Nikon announced the introduction of its highly anticipated binocular with a builtin 1,900-yard laser rangefinder. The new LaserForce rangefinder binocular combines superior optical quality, ergonomic single-hand control, technologically enhanced features and a 100-percent backing with Nikon’s No-Fault Policy. This combination equates to a highly efficient, must-have optic for hunters and shooters. LaserForce features a laser capable of ranging distances from 10-1900 yards with instantaneous readouts on a crisp OLED display. Distances are displayed in 0.1-yard increments to 100 yards, and 1-yard increments over 100 yards. The OLED display offers a 4-step brightness adjustment, making it easily readable under any light conditions and against various objects. Featuring Nikon’s ID (Incline/Decline) Technology to compensate for the effects that slope has on trajectory, LaserForce provides hunters and shooters with the compensated range necessary to make the shot, whether uphill, downhill or on level ground. The 10x42 binocular component of the optic features ED (extra-low dispersion) Glass. This superior glass corrects chromatic
aberration that causes color fringing for highresolution, contrast-rich images. Additionally, full multilayer-coated lenses and prisms and a reflective mirror coating that is applied on the mirror surface of the roof prism unit reveal pristine images. The long eye relief design, combined with turn-and-slide rubber eyecups facilitate a custom fit for users’ individual viewing needs, with or without eyeglasses. The overall design of LaserForce was engineered with the specific needs of hunters and shooters traveling the world’s most rugged types of terrain. The rubber armoring conforming to a metal die-cast body provides a highly durable exterior with a grip that is tailored to the texture and shape of the human hand. LaserForce is also completely waterproof/ fogproof with a nitrogen-purged body that prevents fogging or molding inside the optical system, even under significant changes in temperature. With a MSRP of $1,199.95, LaserForce is the single optic solution for serious hunters and shooters who mandate a high-quality binocular to acquire a distant target and a dependable laser to range the exact distance before taking the shot.

SAVOR THE EXPERIENCE AT MC RANCH Hunters usually have a short wish list. They want to see animals, hopefully plenty of them — and big bucks. They want a good-sized ranch with scenic views. And, spending their hard-earned money, they want to be taken care of with good service. MC Ranch, a 2,000-acre privately owned ranch near Bandera, fits the bill. “It’s a true Texas Hill Country adventure,” said ranch owner Scott Heiman. “It’s 2,000 acres with no cross fencing, and you’ll hunt valleys and hilltops at over 2,000-foot elevation. The views are second to none and many areas are super-rugged.” And you will see animals. From big whitetails to aoudad, bison, elk, axis, blackbuck, sika, fallow, sheep, turkey and more, you’ll never know what might step out next. “We think it’s about the experience and the hospitality,” Heiman said. “Yes, we have great trophy white-tailed deer, but we have much more.” MC Ranch specializes in personalized, guided hunts. The white-tailed deer herd includes plenty of big typicals for those seeking a true trophy. Several spring-fed lakes dot the landscape, and heading out from the boat house and catching a 10-pound bass between hunts is not uncommon. Groups are welcome at MC Ranch, the lodging can handle from four to eight people comfortably, and you’ll enjoy fine dining, Texas-style. Call MC Ranch to book your next adventure.

Situated on nearly 5,000 acres, White Oak Creek Ranch, located just 90 minutes east of Dallas in the wildlife-rich hardwood bottoms of Franklin County, is redefining ranching. “Our goal is to deliver a first-rate, best-of-class destination ranch where the owner-members can enjoy the outdoors and their families without any of the responsibilities of running, managing and maintaining a ranch,” said Ty Looney, who with his business partner, Garry Kyle, purchased the ranch in 2016. The ranch, which had been managed solely for wildlife for the past 30 years, offered the duo an unmatched opportunity to create an exclusive hunting club and ranch community. “We set out to create something we — and other outdoor enthusiasts — would want to be part of for a lifetime,” Looney said. Currently, only 12 owner-memberships remain out of the original 20. In addition to the exceptional habitat for both wildlife and humans, White Oak Creek Ranch stands out from other hunting clubs because its membership is small in relation to its land holdings. “We will have 20 members on nearly 5,000 acres,” said Looney, noting that most other hunting clubs have 40 to 100 members on properties ranging from 2,000 acres to 6,000 acres. “Our club has the lowest member-to-land ratio of any in the country, which allows us to offer true fair chase hunting while limiting the pressure on the wildlife resource.” Although the ranch is an easy drive from the Metroplex, it feels like it’s a world away. “Most people don’t know this type of terrain exists in Texas,” Looney said. “It’s a special place.” White Oak Creek, from which the ranch takes its name, meanders for 6.5 miles through the property. Hardwood bottoms, which are increasingly rare, encompass 3,500 acres of the ranch. A variety of oak trees drop vast amounts of acorns, a protein-rich food source for white-tailed deer, waterfowl and feral hogs. With more than 600 acres of wetlands including 300 acres of flooded green timber, the ranch is a preferred stop for migrating ducks and geese making their annual trek along the Central Flyway. “The number and variety of waterfowl is mind-blowing,” Looney said. “We’ve identified 16 duck species and four goose species here on the ranch.” With five lakes ranging in size from 7 acres to 120 acres, anglers can pit their skills against trophy bass year-round. “All told, we have 172 acres of stocked, professionally managed waters,” Looney said. Four lakes, measuring 7, 8, 17 and 20 acres, are managed strictly for bass, while Paradise Lake is a complete fishery with bass, catfish and crappie. White Oak Creek Ranch lets owner-members and their families enjoy ranch life without the responsibilities of day-to-day management. Onsite, yearround management ensures the ranch is ready to deliver the ultimate outdoor experience whenever the owner-members are ready to enjoy it. “Come see White Oak Creek Ranch for yourself soon,” Looney said. “The chance to live this special life on this incredible property is disappearing quickly as people claim it for themselves.”

THE CELLULAR TRAIL CAMERA LEADER Hunters are realizing how much time they save by not going to the field to pull memory cards. Moultrie Mobile extends its cellular trail camera leadership with its integrated cameras that combine the quality and reliability of Moultrie game cameras with the revolutionary Moultrie Mobile technology to send trail camera pictures to your smartphone or desktop, while Moultrie’s cellular field modems convert your Moultrie game cameras into wireless game cameras. “There is no doubt, this is the year of the cellular trail camera,” said Brian Malone, director of brand management for PRADCO Outdoor Brands. “Each year, we hear more customers telling us that after trying a cellular trail camera, they will never go back.” Moultrie Mobile has introduced two new cellular trail cameras and two new cellular modems for 2019. The XV-7000i and XA-7000i cellular trail cameras connect to the Verizon 4G and AT&T 4G networks, respectively. These cameras let you access game-camera images and control camera settings directly from your smartphone, tablet or computer. Each trail camera features 20-megapixel images, invisible no-glow flash, 80-foot detection and flash range, an Illumi-Night2 sensor for crisp and clear night images, blazing .3 second trigger speeds, and record 1080p video. The MSRP is $179.99. The popular cellular MV2 and MA2 Cellular Field Modems run on Verizon and AT&T, respectively. Field Modems convert a traditional camera into a fully featured, cellular system. A modem mounts to the same tree as the trail camera and connects to the camera via a steel-braided USB cable. The new Field Modems are compatible with most Moultrie game cameras built since 2015. The MSRP is $119.99. To ensure everyone has the ability to get in on the cellular-camera craze, you’ll see generous rebates being offered on all new Moultrie Mobile products. The new 4G Field Modems will cost $99.99 and the 4G Cameras will cost $129.99 after manufacturer’s rebate. Data plans were designed for convenience and affordability. Monthly plans start at $4.99, and you can start and stop your subscription at any time. There are no contracts, no activation fees, and no cancellation fees. Moultrie Mobile also has set the standard for app design, making advanced features like filtering, sorting, tagging, and sharing extremely easy and intuitive. Built for hunting, the cellular game cameras will definitely step up your scouting game, but did you know they also function as excellent security cameras for security-conscious homeowners and wildlife cameras for outdoor photography enthusiasts? Check out all of our Moultrie Mobile devices and choose the best trail camera for your needs.

BUY THE BEST FOR YOUR WHITEWING HUNT White-winged dove present a special challenge. Nearly half again larger in size than a mourning dove, and often flying higher, a reliable shotgun load that packs a punch is a must. Texas hunters pursue whitewings throughout the state, often traveling long distances to hunt the birds over giant sunflowers, sesame fields or in the brush. Fiocchi’s Texas White Wing loads are a nod to the popular game bird that is continuing its move north throughout Texas and beyond. These shells are tailored to take down white-winged dove as well as quail, pheasant and other upland game birds. Each shell features a white, moisture-resistant hull with a decorative blue stamp of a dove in flight. The shotshells are built using a collapsing wad for recoil reduction. The 12-gauge shells are loaded with 1-1/8 ounces of 7.5 lead shot pellets that travel at 1,250 feet per second, while the 20-gauge loads are loaded with 7/8-ounce of 7.5 pellets that travel 1,210 fps. Fiocchi has invested in state-of-the-art ballistic testing equipment and patterning measuring systems to put reliable, consistent performing shells in the hands of hunters. Quality first-run magnum lead shot goes into one-piece shot cups, with one-piece wads propelled by clean burning powders, topped off by the world-renowned Fiocchi primer. You can have confidence — whether you are opening a new box or a new case of shells — your leads won’t change. Fiocchi is an Italian manufacturer that has been in business since 1876. All Fiocchi shotshells sold in the United States are made in its Missouri facility.

FINE ITALIAN SHOTGUNS FOR THE AMERICAN HUNTER Caesar Guerini offers a range of field guns from its Woodlander, with a MSRP of $3,795 to the new Revenant, with a MSRP of $12,995, and everything in between. For hunters, the Woodlander, Tempio and Tempio Light models provide top-quality craftsmanship and reliability at surprisingly competitive prices. Offered in 12-, 20-, 28-gauge and .410 provide a variety of engraving, wood grades and options. There's something for everyone, from the novice hunter who appreciates a fine shotgun in the field to even the most discerning hunter with an eye for absolute craftsmanship and quality. For hunters who carry their shotguns all day, CG offers “Light” models in certain offerings, such as the Tempio and Magnus, which are made of nickel alloy and result in a shotgun weighing in some cases as little as 5 pounds, 5 ounces in a 28-gauge with 26-inch barrels. The Magnus Light was chosen by Outdoor Life as the best new shotgun when it was released, and the Tempio line was named “Best of the Best” by Field & Stream. For enthusiasts looking for a truly fine upland shotgun, previously an out-of-reach luxury item for most, Caesar Guerini offers its Revenent, using modern technology to make a shotgun with the same qualities as a highend, handmade gun — at less than 1/5 the cost. Comparable guns can cost upwards of $65,000 plus, but the Revenant is available at a retail price just under $13,000. Outdoor Life named the Revenant its 2019 Editors Choice. Caesar Guerini’s limited Lifetime Warranty comes with all shotguns sold in the U.S. And the CG PitStop maintenance program allows customers to send in their shotgun for complete service, once per year, at no cost. All service is done at CG’s U.S. facility in Maryland, where gunsmiths break the gun down, clean it and ship it back.

I'll take the
combo (hunt)
By Dave Fulson
For Lone Star Outdoor News Like most Texans and loyal readers of Lone Star Outdoor News, the arrival of fall finds me planning upcoming whitetail hunts. Without a doubt, the annual pursuit of big bucks is the primary focus of most Texas hunters during our generous whitetail season. Yet our state is truly unique in that it offers “bonus opportunities” that can, with a bit of planning, be added to your whitetail hunt. Over the years, I have sampled just about every possible combo hunt you could pair up with your Texas deer hunt. Let's look at a few of my favorites. Duck hunting, especially during the late season, is one of my very favorite additions to a deer hunt. It may be a full-blown hunt with decoys I hauled along, or it could be jump-shooting ducks from farm ponds or larger ranch lakes that can be found on many of the places we hunt. If duck season is open, you can bet a shotgun and a couple of boxes of steel shot are somewhere in my pickup. I love predator hunting, and no state offers better predator hunting than Texas. You will never catch me traveling without some type of either mouth blown or electronic call. Sure, I reserve most of my calling to nonpeak whitetail periods, but during the midday lull I have called in countless coyotes, bobcats and other critters while everyone else was back at camp. And I have been on many slow deer hunts where calling critters turned out to be the highlight of my trip. Down south, javelina can be a great bonus on most whitetail packages. I have guided many out-of-state hunters who I think were more excited about their javelina than they were about the buck they took. They are unique, fun to hunt, and make an interesting mount. And if you don’t want to shoot one at a feeder, you can often call them in with a standard cottontail rabbit squall from a predator call. It is very exciting when it works. And, of course, just about statewide these days, feral hogs can be a fun and tasty bonus on most deer hunts. I know some ranchers who insist their hunters take a couple of hogs, generally at no charge. To the farmer and rancher, feral hogs are an expensive menace. But to most hunters, they are a much-anticipated bonus to their fall deer hunts. For the hunter who enjoys upland wingshooting, both dove and quail can, if the seasons line up, provide wonderful action after you have tagged your deer, or during midday periods. Both dove and quail are great combo hunts that can provide fast action, great table fare, and boredom-killing relief if the deer action is slow. A shotgun and a few boxes of shells have turned some very marginal deer hunts into memorable shoots over the years. And finally, a fishing rod and a few lures can be a great idea if the property your on has stocked lakes or ponds. There’s nothing wrong with hunting for a big bass from time to time. As always, have the right licenses in your pocket, ranch permission, and legal seasons overlapping if you are planning combo hunts. But you are missing out if you are so focused on deer that you cheat yourself out of some of these fun and affordable “Texas combos” during the upcoming season.

The art of
capturing your favorite
hunting moment By Craig Nyhus
Lone Star Outdoor News You’ve just shot the best mature buck on the ranch, a true buck of a lifetime. As luck would have it, you’re alone with no one to tell, and no one to help. And the sun is setting fast. The larger question remains: How do I preserve the memory and do the buck justice without someone to help set the scene for photographs? The typical questions arise, like how to get the buck loaded, until you remember the other truck at the ranch headquarters with a larger winch. Lone Star Outdoor News’ David Sams had this dilemma last season, and improvised with a cell phone and some accessories. “I placed the phone on my binoculars, between the eye pieces and squeezed them together and sat them on the ground using them like a tripod,” Sams said. “I had to remove a lot of long grass in front of the buck that kept getting in the way so I just pulled it out or broke it off.” The difficult part, though, was getting the deer at the correct angle to make the buck look his best. “I kept trying different angles and jumping back and forth looking at what the selftimer had taken,” Sams said. “You’re sweating and your rear end is resting on stickers in the grass. It would be easy to give up. But the sun was setting and I had to get the best field shot I could.” The effort took about 30 minutes and lots of frames on the cell phone camera. Once the buck reaches the camp, especially
if there is a cooler, things get slightly easier. Wanting more than just a hero photo of his buck, Sams took care after field dressing to wash and dry the skin and set the buck up in the corner of the cooler with his head tied up, so he would stiffen up over night and be posed in a nice position. “Then, the next afternoon, I loaded it on the Can-Am and took it hunting with me,” he said. “On the way to the blind, I stopped and took some shots with a nice dark background (a cedar tree). The sun backlit the antlers very nicely and I set the iPhone in a groove of the ATV bed which held it perfectly for more self-timer photos.” At dusk, Sams pulled out his Nikon D3, set it on a folding chair with his backpack as a sandbag, set the self-timer and started shooting this year's hunting annual cover shot. “The distance was about 30 feet so I had to run once I tripped the shutter, settle in, get the light on the bucks antlers and stay as still as possible,” he said. “The exposure took about 25-30 seconds. I like this frame the best, even with a little movement.” The next day after skinning and capping, Sams could not resist another photo session. “I had laid the cape and head down on the concrete,” he said. “There was great lighting and the scene just looked cool so I fired off some more images on the iPhone.” Preserving the memory of your buck can be done, even if you’re alone, but it does take time and thought, taking away from the desire to hurry to the camp, call your friends with the news and celebrate.

THE ULTIMATE BIRD HUNTING VEST The Ultimate Bird Vest is the first product from a new Texas company, Dove Gear LLC, based in Port O’ Connor, and is the result of several years of product development. The Ultimate Bird Vest is packed with features and comfort not found in any other vest or belt product available. Its innovative six-way adjustability allows a proper fit to any size hunter, while placing the shell pouches right where you want them. Another unique feature are two security pockets behind the shell pouches with spring closure — a safe place to keep your cell phone, small camera, dog leash, etc. In addition to the lined, washable game bag, there is an additional rear compartment for hulls or a light rain jacket. The wide shoulder straps balance your load for optimum comfort. The Ultimate Bird Vest was designed with Texas dove-hunting conditions in mind. The breathable mesh back and open sides allow free airflow on those hot September afternoons. Each Ultimate Bird Vest comes with a holder for a 32-ounce bottle of water for you and your dog, positioned for comfortable carry. Additional water bottle holders are available for the other side. Dove Gear founder and designer Terry Koehler has been shooting dove all over Texas for more than 60 years and finally decided to design his own bird hunting vest. “I’ve gone through dozens of vests and belts and always found them lacking in one way or another,” explained Koehler. “I have incorporated the best features I’ve ever found and added more that I have never seen on any vest, like the six-way adjustability to fit any size hunter.” The Ultimate Bird Vest is made with premium materials and construction methods to last you many seasons. It retails for $89.95 with free shipping and is available for purchase at the website below. Check it out.

Behold: The tower of doom.
The new Helix Hunter choke by Briley.
Speaking of simple, how’s 1, 2, 3?
Utilizing the dynamics of the hugely popular Briley Helix Choke for clays, the Helix Hunter from Briley brings the same innovative thinking to the field. And it’s so effective, it’s practically evil.
Though technologically complex, the Helix Hunter could not be more simple to use. Identifying dots are machined into the chokes, designating short, mid, and long-range capabilities.
Special angled lateral ports impart spin on the shot charge as it passes through the choke, resulting in select core pellets migrating to the outer portion of the pattern. The result? More even pellet distribution, pattern-wide, which simply-put, means more birds harvested, less birds just wounded, and recoil reduction to boot!
This choke is one tough customer!
Crafted of aircraft-quality 17–4 stainless steel with an ultra-tough, low glare, easyto clean QPQ finish, the Helix Hunter is a rugged choke, perfect for non-toxic and lead shot alike. Combine that with made-in-the USA Briley quality and guarantee, and we’ve created a legend.

TURN YOUR CURRENT SCOPE INTO NIGHT VISION At NiteSite, we design and manufacture patented infrared night-vision products for hunting, security, and zero ambient light observation. We utilize infrared in a unique way to make our products more affordable, reliable and user-friendly than traditional light amplification technologies. Our scope-mounted products deliver crisp, ultra-clear night vision, even in zero light conditions. The true beauty of a NiteSite is that it converts your day scope into a powerful night-vision system that is quick and simple to set up. Ideal for hog, varmint and predator control, a NiteSite gives you the ability to see your prey in total darkness. There is no visible beam. This is not a red or green light, this is invisible infrared technology, and it attaches to your existing day scope within seconds, and is just as easy to remove. So why pay for expensive thermal scopes that need to be zeroed in when you can attach a NiteSite to your existing scoped weapon, whether it be a .308, an air rifle or a crossbow? NiteSite continues the night-vision revolution through a versatile product range designed to meet the requirements of all types of hunter: the Viper for shortrange hunting, Wolf for medium-range targets and the Eagle for long-range strikes. You can get yourself set up with a NiteSite with a starting price of $499. Call our showroom at our new premises at 9143 East Hwy. 67 (Unit 3), Alvarado, TX 76009. HOG HUNTING WITH SIDE-BY-SIDES By Todd Huey, Huey Outdoors Feral hogs are always adapting and learning how to avoid different eradication techniques. Hunting hogs used to be as simple as going out in the daytime with your favorite rifle, but the hogs adapted, becoming nocturnal. Traps were brought in and were very effective, until the hogs again adapted and stopped going into the traps. Helicopters were next, and used with great success, bringing high numbers of kills in a short amount of time, but at high costs. And, some hogs have learned to head for cover when they hear a helicopter. Hunting with night vision and thermal still remains the most effective way to keep the feral hog population in check. The animals are unable to adapt or hide — the only option is to leave the area completely. Searching for a way to bring the high numbers that were achieved from helicopters and combine it with hunting with night vision and thermal, government trappers came up with the idea from hunting at night and using side-by-side buggies like the Polaris Ranger or Can-Am Defender. My alltime highest kills of 319 hogs in one night was accomplished using this method — combining side-by-sides with night vision, thermal, lasers and AR-15s. To hunt with a side-by-side successfully, you need a vehicle capable of doing the job as quietly as possible. It needs to be fast, it needs a smooth ride and it needs bright lights. Family Power Sports in Lubbock is owned and run by hunters and farmer-friendly people, and provided me with two different side-by-sides to help the farmers and ranchers. Both were 1000cc versions, the CanAm Defender Lone Star Edition and the Polaris Ranger. Both performed flawlessly and had enough power to easily complete the job. To make this style of eradication work, you’ll need wide-open spaces. We use this method in crop fields where you have room to chase the hogs down, get ahead of the hogs, and stay between them and the edges of the pasture or field. We found the best approach is to have two to three people. The most important position, and the one that requires the most skill, is the driver. The driver is responsible for getting close to the hogs (if done right, 5 to 10 yards from the passenger door), keeping the hogs in the field and avoiding crashing. The second position, the shooter, is in the front passenger seat and will fire directly out the passenger door to all the way in front through the front window. If you have a crew cab, there may be a third position for another shooter. This third position has two jobs, using a thermal
42 |
monocular to spot the hogs and be a tail gunner to pick up the hogs missed by the first shooter. The equipment we have found the most effective are short-barreled LWRCI piston AR-15’s with silencers and drum magazines. Since average shots are 5 to 10 yards, the velocity lost from short-barreled rifles has little effect. We found that with standard 30-round magazines, even with the short time it takes to reload, we were losing too many hogs. We now use drum magazines and our numbers have doubled. We go through a lot of ammunition and have found the piston rifles to run cleaner and to be more reliable. While traveling 50 to 60 mph across plowed fields and shooting at moving targets, we use Steiner dbal A3 lasers from HueyOutdoors.com that have a visible green laser and invisible infrared laser that are both used for aiming. On a typical side-by-side eradication hunt, we begin by searching for hogs in the side-by-side. We drive with helmet-mounted PVS 14 night-vision monoculars, and spot with thermal monoculars. Once hogs are located, we approach with no lights using the night vision to get as close as possible without spooking the hogs. Once the hogs alert, the driver will punch it and approach the hogs as fast as possible, still with no lights. As soon as we get to the desired shooting range, we turn off all night vision and turn on the white lights. The bright white lights seem to confuse and blind the hogs, and provide the driver enough light. Once the white lights come on, it’s like a shooting gallery. On a good run, you are able to wipe out the entire herd by circling them and keeping them in the center of the field. For those who do not have wide-open fields, side-by-sides can still be an effective tool. Side-by-sides are able to get into areas where full-size vehicles cannot. Recovering hogs is turned from an hour-long chore to something that takes a few minutes, without totally destroying a farmer’s fields and crops. With both vehicles, we were able to get within 100 yards without alerting the hogs, and we would typically drive and spot and then stalk the last 100 yards. If you hunt country where your field of view is less than 100 yards, an electric-powered UTV may be the answer. I went on a hunt with the owner of Wild Boar Meat Company in Hubbard, and, using his electric side-by-side we were able to load six hunters and approach hogs almost silently. In fact, we all agreed everyone loaded into the electric vehicle was quieter than six hunters walking in the dark. The disadvantage to electric side-by-side is limited range and limited power, although newer versions are seeking to expand both.

NEW OWNERSHIP, UPGRADES AT MONARCH HUNTING PRODUCTS Meet the new owners of Monarch Hunting Products — Corey and Dixie Lehr with their littles, River and Ryder. The Lehrs purchased the Alvarado-based business in March of 2019 and have Texas-sized plans for its future. “We have always dreamed of doing what we love,” Corey said. “Now we can demonstrate our interests and talents daily, through our company.” In 1993, Monarch was established with the intention of helping the do-it-yourself Texas hunter. Jumping ahead to 2019, the new owners have designed and manufactured new efficient series of blinds, feeders and accessories with all hunting terrain in mind. “We have the new Stealth Series of blinds, with a satin black finish and a new, red logo,” Corey said “And we have the Stubby Feeder, our new stand-and-fill feeder. The backbone of each of the products Monarch made is still there, but what’s inside, the fit-and-finish, has all been upgraded.” The products are made with high-grade materials and components to last a lifetime. They are sure to help fill your freezers and hang the highly sought-after Mr. Buck on the wall. “We have been in touch with dealers, suppliers and customers each day,” Corey said. “Dixie and I plan to move forward with honesty, sincerity, integrity and hard work.”
44 |
Monarch’s automatic game feeders have accurate and precise digital timers that allow you to maintain a strict feed schedule. The larger feeders and blinds can be used for excellent game and range management in order to attract and hold a substantial game population on paid hunting leases or ranches. Our smaller feeders and stands are for the hunters who access their land more frequently with less acreage. Whichever category you fall into, we have designed the perfect products for you. Corey holds a degree in engineering and forestry from Auburn University and attributes his attention to detail and precision to his previous technical experience in the manufacturing industry. Dixie holds a degree in communication from the University of Arkansas and handles business operations and all things marketing. Come see what the new owners are doing with Monarch Hunting Products in 2019!

Axis hunting with the new LMT Texas Edition By David J. Sams, Lone Star Outdoor News We got to the blind an hour early on the morning of our last hunt, and when the first light showed, the G5 Ranch sendero was full of big game animals. About 30 whitetail and two handfuls of axis fed on the heavily corned, oak tree covered road. Yearlings to 200-inch bucks fed in and amongst the axis, keeping the best one from being taken. It was a beautiful sight for any deer hunter and hard to keep calm as a safe shot was impossible. “We are never going to get a shot off; there are just too many deer and they are moving around too much,” I mumbled under my breath. After about 30 minutes, the largest axis buck finally looked at our blind and started walking straight for us. He never slowed or fed again, he just kept coming. My hunting partner, Dave Richards, looked in disbelief and said, “Well, I guess this is the one we are going to take.” I whispered back, “As soon as he clears the pack, I’ll take him.” I followed his motion and put the cross hairs just in front of his right shoulder. The 120-grain bullet hit and and exited. The buck bolted. During our wait, we talked about how many deer we had seen over the last few days and how well managed the G5 Ranch was. We also talked about how much fun we had hunting together and what we had learned from each other, and promised to make another hunt soon. We followed a small blood trail and used a Leupold LTO-Tracker thermal to find the buck in the thick whitebrush. We both had walked 15 feet from the deer but just could not see it. The thermal device was amazing. The 6.8 SPC bullet had performed well on the hard-to-kill animal. Known for their military rifles, LMT wants to get more hunters using their modern sporting rifle platforms, and they developed this gun for Texas hunters looking for a fast, dependable semi-auto that would make a good deer rifle. Enhancing the appearance of the cerakoted gun with a laser-engraved Texas flag on the lower will make any Texan proud. The guns are designed to have the strongest upper receiver in the industry. Made out of a single forging, the entire upper receiver and hand guard area is
one solid piece of aerospace aluminum, removing all the standard failure points. I had no problem watching the bullet hit the axis just in front of his shoulder and felt no recoil as the gas action worked its magic. The Hornady 120-grain SST bullet travels at 2,460 fps from a 16-inch barrel. LMT makes all of its own parts for the guns. Triggers, selectors, bolt carriers, barrels, receivers, grips, stocks and tubes. This gives LMT a huge advantage in quality control, ensuring each of their guns is of the highest quality when it ships out of the factory. They are American-made and LMT opened a new factory in Iowa this year. LMT modern rifles have several extra benefits. Modularity is definitely one of them. The barrel can rapidly be changed to a different caliber in 30 seconds in the field if the hunter desires. So you can switch from hunting big game in the 6.8 SPC to a .224 Valkyrie for coyote hunting. Another feature is the Modular Ambidextrous Rifle System, with complete ambidextrous controls: selector, magazine catch, bolt catch and release, and charging handle so a rightor left-handed hunter is comfortable with this gun in a matter of minutes. And with me being a left-handed shooter, this was very helpful. Dave Richards might be best know as the coauthor of “Observing & Evaluating Whitetails” but he is also a manufacturer's rep with H&G Marketing and responsible for South Texas sales. The 20” 6.5 Creedmore retails for $2,699 and the 16” 6.8 SPC retails for $1,999. It is available at select LMT dealers across Texas.

ITALIAN FIELD GUNS AND SEMI-AUTOS FROM FABARM It’s the perfect time for a new dove-hunting shotgun, and what better fits the season than a firearm designed specifically for Texans. The new Fabarm ELOS D2 LONESTAR Edition is a limited production run based on Fabarm’s new ELOS D2 over-and-under field gun. The standard D2 features a nickel-plated receiver and Turkish walnut stock available in 12-, 20- and 28-gauges with 28-inch barrels with a traditional game scene on the receiver. The special edition features added embellishments like the case color-hardened receiver with gold inlays of the Texas State outline on the bottom of the receiver, a Texas gold star on the top level and gold birds intricately engraved over a special Texas game scene. It's truly a unique engraving pattern only found on this extremely limited production run. Fabarm has been making fine Italian shotguns since 1900, and they are 100-percent made in Italy to ensure the highest level of quality and craftsmanship. Especially known for its barrels, which are over-pressure tested by the Italian National Proofhouse to the highest possible standards, Fabarm is the only manufacturer to test its barrels at 1630 BAR, a superior performance rating well above and beyond the standard rating
required for certification. Fabarm also is well known for its semi-auto platform of shotguns. In the field guns, the L4S line stands out. The L4S is available in three grades: Initial (black standard action), Grey (upgraded wood and engraving) and Deluxe (deluxe wood and intricate engraving with gold inlays). For waterfowlers, Fabarm has the XLR5 Waterfowler in TrueTimber Viper camo and Cerakote O.D. green on the receiver and fore-end cap. And, new for 2019, is the Fabarm XLR5 Composite Hunter. It’s a great do-it-all semi-auto for duck hunting, upland birds or a day crushing clays. The synthetic matte-black stock with soft-touch coating makes it easy to handle in harsh elements and neutral enough for any use. Fabarm was purchased by Caesar Guerini in 2012, and shotguns should they need servicing are done at the same facility as Guerini USA in historic Cambridge, Maryland. All Fabarm field guns are rated for steel and other nontoxic shots.

BETTER TO HAVE IT AND NOT NEED IT, THAN TO NEED IT AND NOT HAVE IT This truism of gun ownership can also apply to owning a better, more refined gun. So why settle for a striker-fired pistol with an OK trigger and a few generic grip options when the HK VP9 or VP9SK have great triggers and 27 different fitment combinations? Options too, are better to have . . .
