The window may be smaller to bring in red snapper in federal waters off of the Texas Coast this season, but that doesn’t mean captains and charter services didn’t take full advantage of the time they’re given. Charter services from Galveston, Rockport and South Padre Island reported hot spots for snapper — and they weren’t as far out as water temperatures may lead some to believe. “We’re seeing mucho red snapper,” said South Padre Island Capt. Bump in water levels helping fishing in Cen-Tex waters

The San Marcos River was hurting for water last month, until a soaking rain bumped the river above flood stage. For those that fish around Central Texas, the water was a huge help to restore river levels, and it helped the fishing tremendously. “We are coming off a flood,” said river guide Marcus Rodriguez of Guides of Texas. “Right before the flood, the river
was very low, but very clear, especially on the lower section of the San Marcos below Staples Dam. It is dropping nicely now.” Rodriguez said the fishing was consistent before the flood, but has picked up since, especially in the area around Martindale. “Poppers, wolly buggers, clouser minnows and shank screamers in current breaks are really consistent,” he said. “We are catching largemouth bass, Guadalupe/smallmouth hybrids and Rio
