NEW LADIES CUP SPORTING CLAYS COMPETITION FROM WINCHESTER Desirae Edmunds, a professional sportings clays shooter and member of Team Winchester, is a role model to young, female shotgunners. The popularity of women shooting has prompted Winchester to launch the Winchester Ladies Cup, a season-long sporting clays competition designed specifically for ladies who shoot on the National Sporting Clays Association Championship Tour, powered by Winchester. “A lot of thinking went into the Winchester Ladies Cup, and it started by looking at the current payout structure between the top men shooters and the top women shooters. There was a big difference in their earnings with the payout to the female winners being significantly lower,” said Brett Flaugher, president of Winchester Ammunition. “The Winchester Ladies Cup is an opportunity to add tremendous value to the many female sporting clays shooters across the country — a group of competitors who continue to grow each year and compete at a high level.” Edmunds began shooting when asked to give it a try at age 14 while living in Alaska. She was hooked. Edmunds, now a Savannah, Georgia resident, lived for seven years in the Houston area, helping instruct at several shooting ranges, including the Greater Houston Sports Club, Westside and Able’s. She also loves to hunt both waterfowl and upland game and loves to fish. “I really shot a lot more when I lived in Houston,” she said, increasing to about 8,000 registered targets per year, not including all of the practice time.

The shooting paid off, as she has won two national championships and two World English championships. The renowned shooter is a believer in helping get more women into the sport — and said the Ladies Cup is a step to help make that happen. “The Ladies Cup is near and dear to me,” Edmunds said. “With increased visibility, the sport becomes more entry-level friendly and ladies are more comfortable giving it a try, and support from a company makes women more apt to go compete. “I am continuously impressed with how Winchester brings innovative thinking into their support of the shooting sports.” Her favorite load? “The AA 1-ounce 1250 in 7 1/2 and 8,” Edmunds said. “They weren’t making it at the time, but I asked for it when I started with Winchester. Now it’s one of their top sellers.” The Winchester Ladies Cup will span the seven NSCA Championship Tour regional events with $5,000 in added payout dollars awarded to the top three allaround female competitors at each event based on the highest cumulative score in the Five-Stand, Main Event and FITASC Event. The all-around champion will receive an additional $2,500, the runner-up will receive $1,500 and all-around third place will receive $1,000. At the end of the season, the Winchester Ladies Cup trophy and $10,000 will be awarded to the three female shooters with the highest cumulative

placements for the entire season. The Ladies Cup trophy and $5,000 will be awarded to the cup champion, $3,000 will be awarded to the runner-up, and $2,000 will be awarded for the third place. Season standings will be updated on nssa-nsca.org. Winchester has a long track record of promoting female participation in the shooting sports. As the official ammunition of the Scholastic Clay Target Program, Winchester supports a group that introduces the shooting sports to thousands of young ladies each year. “The Winchester commitment to actively growing participation is unparalleled, and I know many ladies who will greatly benefit from the Winchester Ladies Cup,” Edmunds said.

THE EXPLOSION OF SHOOTING, AND FUN By Craig Nyhus

Lone Star Outdoor News The numbers tell the story, but shooters are having all the fun. And more of the shooters are women and minorities, more of them are younger, and more of them are competing. According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the trade association for the firearms industry, nearly 5 million Americans purchased a firearm for the first time in 2020, representing 40 percent of sales. Women comprised 40 percent of first-time gun purchasers. All shooting disciplines are seeing an increase in participation, beginning in high school. The USA Clay Target League is currently holding 47 events of individual and team competition with more than 16,000 high school students participating, the largest clay target shooting sport event, and more and more colleges are adding teams to the college category. The Winchester Ladies Cup has brought female shooting to another level by equalizing prize money between male and female competitors. 3 Gun competitions are booming. In the last year, the NRA 3 Gun Experience has grown more than 30 percent, reaching new shooters in the timed events in which competitors move through various stages engaging in targets using a pistol, rifle and shotgun. Long-range shooting also is on a rapid rise, with more shooters realizing the joy of hearing a bullet strike a metal gong at 1,000 yards or more. Competitions across the country report long waiting lists of shooters wanting to take part. The numbers help state agencies and the economy in general. According to NSSF’s study, the total economic impact of the firearm and ammunition industry in the United States increased from $19.1 billion in 2008 to $63.5 billion in 2020, a 232 percent increase. Full-time jobs total 342,330, 106 percent more than in 2008, with wages totaling more than $19 billion and with a total economic impact of more than $63.5 billion. The industry and the jobs supported paid federal taxes of more than $4 billion; state taxes of more than $2.9 billion; and, of great importance to state and federal wildlife agencies, excise taxes of more than $665 million. Under the Pittman-Robertson Act, the excise tax is set at 11 percent of the wholesale price for long guns and ammunition, and 10 percent of the wholesale price for handguns. Shooting has become more than groups of veteran enthusiasts who head to the range — it’s a fun and exciting way to enjoy getting out with friends, to safely hit some targets, and to compete with people who feel the same way, all while being a significant part of our nation’s economy.
