IMPROVE SHOOTING WHILE HAVING FUN WITH FIREBIRD DETONATING TARGETS Firebird’s new exploding targets are taking the shooting world by storm, with safe and ready-to-use detonating targets. The targets were launched in the United Kingdom, and now are manufactured in Fort Worth. Firebird 50 BIO Targets are the world’s first completely biodegradable detonating target. The self-contained, pyrotechnic reactive targets are legal, safe, require no mixing and are easy to transport. And they can be used with rifles (including rimfires), shotguns, handguns and even archery equipment. For shotgunners, the targets can be attached to a clay pigeon for instant feedback at a moving target. The 50mm targets put out sound, smoke and flash, giving instant recognition. No spotter at long distances? No problem. Simply open the package and mount the target with the peel-and-stick tape. You won’t miss the percussion, flash and smoke indicating you’ve hit the mark. And if you miss the bulls-eye but hit the outer edges of the target, the percussion decreases, providing instant feedback. Want less noise? Place wood behind the target instead of steel. Firebird targets are more than just fun; they are accuracy tools used by civilian and tactical personnel across the globe, including law enforcement, SWAT, sniper, police and special forces. Shooters used to binary targets can breathe easier. Firebird targets are not binary targets (like Tannerite) and do not contain ammonium nitrate, doing away with requirements of locked explosives storage and licensed transport requirements, making Firebird the smart alternative. So have some fun and improve your shooting accuracy at the same time. Firebird targets will improve your accuracy in a single session.

Beretta has introduced its new A300 Ultima in both 12 and 20 gauges, with the classic mechanisms of the reliable A300 platform with new enlarged controls, an improved receiver and the Beretta Kick-Off recoil reduction system. Made in the USA, the A300 Ultima is built tough to withstand adverse conditions out on the hunt and to perform when you need it most. The added features to the A300 line come without an increase in price, making the A300 Ultima your choice for hunting waterfowl, upland game or dove. The A300 Ultima black synthetic model retails for $799 and the camo versions for $899. The new Ultima line features enhanced user interfaces and recoil reduction technology that allows for Beretta to state that the A300 Ultima is the best shotgun in its class. The new A300 Ultima Black Synthetic stock adds a soft touch comb and included Kick-Off recoil reduction technology, which allows for recoil mitigation never before seen at this price point. The A300 Ultima is designed for hunters. An oversized bolt release and cross-bolt safety is enlarged, along with the loading port, making the shotgun perfect for wintertime hunters who often handle and operate their guns with gloved hands. Lone Star Outdoor News’ CEO David J. Sams was one of the first to shoot the new A300 Ultima this summer at the DUX Expo at Texas Motor Speedway. “I shot the 20 gauge and was impressed with zero felt recoil in the super lightweight gun,” he said. “The oversized bolt handle and release are easy to operate.” The top of the A300 Ultima’s receiver was lowered and a wide 7x7mm stepped rib, which includes a bead with a fiber optic front, makes lining up and finding the target highly visible. Beretta’s MobilChoke allows for your choice of choke options. As with other A300 models, the Kick-Off recoil reduction system, a hydraulic damping system, reduces felt recoil significantly — Beretta says by 44 percent, a big plus for avid hunters and compromised shoulders. Stop by Beretta Gallery in Dallas to hold and buy the new, affordable models. Features Barrel length Gauges Chamber Rib Models

It’s time to
GET READY
By Craig Nyhus
Lone Star Outdoor News Other issues don’t seem to matter as much when August arrives because hunting season is right around the corner. The focus on viruses, politics, and diseases in deer, all take a back seat in order to prepare for Sept. 1, and the following deer and waterfowl seasons. Questions on hunters’ minds will be: Do I have shotgun shells? Hunters will check their supply. Is my gun working? Hunters might head to the sporting clays course for a day of practice, or just clean their gun. Do my hunting clothes still fit after all the time spent at home in the last year? Is my opening day hunting spot in good shape?
14 |
Hunters may drive out and check the sunflower or dove weed fields, even though they know the two weeks before opening day could change everything, especially if rain or a cold front rolls through. Deer hunters begin checking feeders and setting trail cameras rather than worrying about what commentators are saying about vaccines.
He looks mature — I think he’ll be a good one. Waterfowlers wait a little longer, but looking for early arriving blue-winged teal while dove hunting gets them going, and they start making their plans. Will the drought up north mean fewer ducks this year?
Are my timers still working?
Do we need more decoys?
Are the camera batteries dead?
Will the geese use the same grain fields?
How I am going to see the deer with all this vegetation?
Should we book a sandhill crane hunt this year?
Do we need any new feeders? Will I be able to find ammunition? Many will come to a realization. We should have been hunting the pigs more. They know the bucks are still growing, but checking their camera and seeing a photo of one raises the excitement level.

Finally, the list is made of what’s needed, and a trip either to their retailer or one of the hunters shows planned, where they can see a bunch of other hunters, check out the new stuff this year, and watch their list, morphing from what’s needed to what’s wanted, grow. Is there any stimulus money left to use for hunting gear?

BOSS Shotshells and The Crippling Reality
BOSS SHOTSHELLS
☎ (269) 465-3631 BOSSSHOTSHELLS.COM
20 |
The Bad: Too many birds are lost to crippling every single year in the U.S. alone. Although that number is tough to pin down, one thing is for certain, and we can all agree on, it’s far, far too many. The Ugly: As waterfowlers and wingshooters go, that’s 100 percent on us. The Good? Together, we can drastically reduce that number — a huge nugget of hope we all should celebrate. In a time when it seems like our hunting heritage is always under siege, imagine if we, as a community, commit to reducing that awful number of cripples. What would reducing it by even half look like? For one, it puts a significant number of more birds on the nesting grounds each year. Now imagine what increased breeding success could mean. Maybe we’d get more than a single pintail and a few more scaup per day. Maybe mallard limits in certain regions could follow. Maybe the anti-hunting crowd will ease up a little — but we’re not holding our breath. In the end, more birds for everyone would be a fantastic thing for our hunts, our legacies and our hopes for future generations. All we have to do is do our part and that starts with doing what’s right. But how? By changing the narrative. Rethink not only the way you’re hunting, but the tools with which you hunt. Start with a better shell than tired old steel, and we’re not just saying that because we’re a shell company. We’re saying this because it’s the truth, evidenced by the massive decrease in birds dying from lead poisoning after lead became outlawed. That’s proof that the actions of the waterfowling community can make a huge difference without the government stepping in and telling us how to hunt. After all, sportsmen were the original conservationists. In a way, voluntarily walking away from lead was the right thing to do. But it came with a new set of consequences. Whereas we were poisoning less birds using non-toxic steel, the issue of crippling birds became a much bigger deal. Steel, no matter what size shot or the absurd speed it claims to reach, just doesn’t hit or penetrate nearly as well. And while the advent of heavier, denser non-toxic shot options were great, they cost an arm and a leg, putting that level of lethality out of reach for most hunters. For years, we’ve had a new reality: We’re poisoning less but now we’re crippling more. With copper-plated BOSS, we can change that reality. Nearly as heavy as lead and safe in classic barrels, it’s like the good old days are back in both premium performance and value. At BOSS, we only sell direct at BOSSshotshells.com. That means there’s no paying retail middleman markups. Just premium shells shipped from our door to yours. For a few dimes more per squeeze, copper-plated BOSS kills like lead without shredding your wallet out in the process. That’s a win-win for your budget and the birds. With BOSS, start by getting honest with yourself about how you like to take birds. Paddles down and in the decoys? Or pass shooting at 40-plus yards? Most folks start with our 12 gauge 2 3/4” Shorty #5, easily our most versatile load. Once you’ve thought long and hard about your common shooting scenario, screw in a choke. Most go with an IM or a full, depending on shooting distance. Now, actually put it on paper. That’s real-deal woodsmanship and we’d like to see the waterfowling community get way back into it. Pattern your shotgun and you’ll know exactly what it’s capable of at your chosen distance. If you find a few holes in your pattern, choke it down. If it’s too tight, open it up. Experiment and really perfect your pattern. You’ll shoot less and kill more, guaranteed. Only after you’ve patterned should you put copper-plated BOSS on the birds. That’s when you can start fine-tuning shell and shot size, but again most start with the BOSS Shorty. Next — and this one’s key — ‘No Your Shot.’ We’re not just talking about saying no to skybusting. That’s amateur hour. We’re asking that you pull off a bird if you know the shot is pushing your effective range. More birds will come, and you’ll reduce your number of cripples even more. Last, we’d ask you marinate on what you’ve just read. Think about that number and how small changes in our collective thinking can really make a big difference for the birds. Consider joining a conservation organization. And as always, don’t be afraid to reach out to us for help on either social media or through our website. The BOSSmen are here for you and the birds.

Fusion Thermal Shakes Up Thermal Scope Market The war on feral hogs is getting a big boost this month as newcomer Fusion Thermal drops its technology bomb onto the wild swine of Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma. Feral hogs are a problem — a big problem. There is an estimated 6 million wild pigs in the United States with 1.5 million in Texas alone, and they are profuse eaters and breeders. According to the USDA, feral hogs are accountable for an estimated $1.5 billion loss in agriculture each year. Their destruction drives up prices and financially strains already struggling family farms. In the battle for American cropland, it is universally acknowledged that the hogs are winning. Enter Fusion Thermal LLC and their Avenger 35, a new thermal rifle scope with performance enhancing technology at mainstream pricing. “With this technology we’re going to arm an entirely new generation of hog hunters. Until today the hogs have been winning. We are finally going to turn the tide by swinging the advantage to the hunter,” said Fusion Thermal Chief Chris Wisecarver. Breaking the price-to-performance problem was “simple complexity.” The simple part is to invest money wisely buying only the best components available to build your products. This begins with Fusion Thermal’s scientific grade Arclight Ultra HD Germanium lens, the single most expensive and important component of any thermal optic. Some brands spend all their money on components that give marketing departments good specifications for websites and do so at the expense of all other critical
components. Fusion Thermal’s profound belief is that performance is the sum of combined greatness. It must be in every component and every assembly technique. “In an effort to look good on paper, our competitors are trying to leapfrog each other by building products with unproven and unstable technology,” Wisecarver said. “Having eye-catching specifications doesn’t make a thermal work better. The key to building a great thermal is to remember that the human eye is the judge. At Fusion Thermal we are not slaves to specifications — we are champions of performance.” The complexity part is where you will find the heart of Fusion Thermal’s technology: the WAVE Thermal Sensor. How this technology works is a closely guarded secret — the company publicly defines it as Wavelength Area Variation Expansion. Essentially a ‘turbo-charging’ of performance, this technology makes one class of product outperform others that, on paper, would appear to be superior. This makes the Avenger 35 a true game changer for those wanting cutting-edge performance on a mainstream budget. Will Fusion Thermal’s approach and technology finally turn the tide in the war on swine? Time will tell, but one thing is for sure: Fusion Thermal is turning the price-toperformance ratio on its head. That’s good news if you want to bring more soldiers into the fight.

A CENTURY OF FARM AND RANCH SALES, LAND APPRAISALS Established in 1920, Chas. S. Middleton and Son is a fourth-generation, family-owned farm and ranch real estate sales and land appraisal business. While many things have changed in the world since we opened our doors, two things have remained constant: the beauty of nature and the value of hardwon land. Trust is hard to come by in today’s fiercely competitive farm and ranch real estate market, but we’re here to provide experience and integrity. In today’s farm and ranch real estate market, there’s no substitute for a good ranch broker with an expert appraisal team to back him up. Whether you’re aiming to buy or sell property, working with a qualified, knowledgeable broker helps ensure the process goes smoothly and successfully. We have arguably the best team of farm and ranch real estate brokers and appraisers in the industry, prepared to offer you outstanding service. Our team has the knowledge, experience, and the connections to get a property marketed, handle inspections, negotiate deals and help with the process of obtaining financing when required. We work with many trust departments, law firms and CPAs, and handle complex deals from beginning to completion. With a sales team in key locations, we serve a broad area and have a better understanding of local aspects other brokerage firms may not grasp. Buyers, if you are looking to invest in a farm or ranch, with our connections built on years of developing relationships based on trust and integrity, experience and knowledge of the land we often know of potential properties before they are available on the market. Sellers, our firm will connect you with the special class of buyers who know the value of good land. We’ll work hard to help make a return on your investment. Every exclusive listing comes with a professional marketing package at no cost to the client, setting us apart from our competition. Essential elements of the marketing package include professional still and video photography, print marketing and advertising in local, regional and national publications, as well digital marketing and advertising on the best land and ranch websites and social media platforms. If you are in need of an appraisal, our expert appraisers specialize in farm and ranch properties, and truly know the market. They’ll do the legwork required to deliver an accurate, honest value for your farm or ranch. When Charles Middleton rode into Lubbock on horseback in 1898, he couldn’t have known what the next century would bring for his business and his family. As we enter our second century in the farm and ranch sales business, we are here to safeguard his legacy of hard work, fair deals and a firm handshake. If you’re looking for a firm that knows farms and ranches, we’d love to hear from you.

EXPERIENCED LOCAL LAND AGENT, MODERN APPROACH
Texas land brokerages statewide are seeing buyers from all parts of the world, resulting in record sales in 2021. However, for an individual searching for a parcel of land in this market, the challenges faced are much more significant. To be capable of making any sound financial decision requires time and understanding. In a fast-paced market, an experienced local land agent who understands their product is a precious asset. Below are Campbell Farm & Ranch’s tips for active buyers who may be struggling in this historically rapid market. • • •

Understand Your End-Use Pay Attention to Time Locate a Local Land Specialist
What is the ultimate end-use for the land? Is your goal to generate income, raise a family, hunt, retire, escape, or all of the above? Texas is a large, diverse state with different resources to offer in its 10 Ecological Regions. For instance, in East Texas, the higher annual rainfall provides more animals per acre than in the arid pastures of West Texas. While West Texas has an abundance of underground water, North Texas varies county by county. Hunting follows a similar pattern, with each of the 254 counties providing unique attributes and habitats. Do you desire 15 to 30 deer a hunt or the higher likelihood of a trophy showing up? Or are you a wingshooter that needs to be in the correct flight path for your bird of choice? Understanding these differences in the land requires more than a real estate license or an internet search. Proper understanding requires a desire to learn about the animals and their preferred habitats while also spending enough time in a specific region to utilize that knowledge. There is not a refund or reimbursement for lost time. Time lost can begin by studying “Sold” listings marked “Active” online or by traveling to a property to realize that crucial details are missing from the information provided. Time spent traveling to a ranch often has a significant influence on how frequently this ranch is visited. The time spent maintaining the land may be a goal for enjoyment or considered work that deters from enjoying the investment. Time is an important attribute that influences many aspects of the final result. One thing preached at Campbell Farm & Ranch is working with experienced, local land brokerages in your geographical area of interest. When you use a local agent or broker in your land search, you access a wealth of information not found on the internet or an MLS site. Yet, any worthwhile brokerage should have a modern website with the latest technologies, including HD and aerial photography, interactive maps, and well-written property descriptions. These attributes show that this company has invested in its business and takes a progressive approach to the current real estate market challenges. Next, a thriving agency should have multiple positive reviews across the internet and updated company pages on at least Facebook and Instagram. These local farm and ranch agents are often your best sources for locating home builders, supplies or services, and general advice for the area. Visit Campbell Farm & Ranch’s website at www.CFRLand.com for an example of a local brokerage specializing in farm and ranch real estate.

DAY TRIPping for texas Pheasant People don’t often picture hunting pheasant in thigh-high grass, with a pheasant flush beating up to the Texas sky. But these exciting, flushes occur over and over at Santa Anna Hunting Area. Long drives aren’t your thing? Think about a day trip to hunt flushing birds right here in Texas. Eldena Stearns is known for producing pheasants that bust out and fly like the real, wild thing. Although now she only uses the birds at her hunting operation and sells some to landowners, the state-of-the-art hatchery was known as one of the top producers for preserves in the south. At Santa Anna Hunting Area, Stearns runs hunts for pheasant, chukar and quail over some of the best dogs around. And the prices will get your attention. Half-day hunts start at $300, and you can customize your family or corporate group’s hunt to your preference. Hunting begins in October and goes through mid-March at the preserve. The dogs, dog handlers, bird cleaning, packaging and ice are provided. All you need is your hunting license, shotgun, shells and an ice chest. Most of the dogs at Santa Anna Hunting Area are French Brittanys, although they have German shorthairs, labradoodles and, the customer favorite, their standard poodle. Hunters who want to bring their own dogs are welcome, either for your own hunt or to add to the hunt with the preserve’s dogs. Stearns said access is easy for most Texans to come and experience a pheasant hunt, and the cover at the ranch is good. “Most of Texas can drive in and hunt, and go home,” she said. “Most cities are less than three hours away, and we have a little lodge available for those who want to stay a weekend.” “I have hunted pheasants from North Dakota to Texas, and Santa Anna Hunting Area has the best flushing and flying birds I have seen,” said Lone Star Outdoor News’ David J. Sams. “Eldena has an amazing way of raising and releasing her birds so you experience as close to wild bird hunting as you can get and it’s only a day trip away — and you are still in Texas.” Santa Anna Hunting Area also has a campsite with RV hookups available at no extra charge near “The Oak Tree,” a 350-year-old oak where groups gather after the hunt. At the family-run hunting preserve, there is no limit. “It depends on Mother Nature, dog work and your shooting ability,” Stearns said. “Sometimes you take out more than we put out, sometimes less.”
