A rainy spring in Texas has created optimal conditions for catching catfish on Lake Fork and Lake Tawakoni. “The new water running in here is making it better than probably normal,” said Tony Pennebaker of Thunder Cove Guide Service. “The catfish are biting pretty good.” Although still 2.02 feet low, the rainwater has flooded previously dry vegetation in Lake

Tawakoni, creating new feeding grounds for hungry catfish. Pennebaker reports the fish are primarily biting in the shallow water in the newly flooded (green) willow trees.” Another important factor is the rising water temperatures, which has the catfish getting ready to spawn. “I am catching a lot of male channel cats making beds,” Pennebaker said. Although water temperatures are around 75 degrees, a warming trend is still needed to

bring on the spawn, which triggers when the water hits about 85 degrees. Rains have been so impressive that Lake Fork is more than full for the first time in years and “the highest it’s been since they installed the pump station that feeds water to Dallas,” according to Stan Kuhn of Stan Kuhn’s Lake Fork Guide Service. Kuhn described similar catch rates at Lake Tawakoni. Please turn to page 11

Huge nontypical axis taken

By Conor Harrison Rain Creek Ranch Manager Kyle Nunn had never laid eyes on the axis buck that walked out May 8 in front of Snyder hunter Wade Pinson. “It was a state of awe for all of us,” Nunn said. “We are still trying to get over it. We were blind hunting, sitting on a trail, and we had several axis bucks come in, even other nontypical axis.” Nunn determined the buck, still in velvet, was tipped-out and about ready to shed his velvet, so the decision was made to let Pinson harvest the animal. “Wade made a great shot and the deer went down very quickly,” Nunn TINES AND MASS: Snyder hunter Wade Pinson admires the axis buck he said. “Once this deer was down, we all harvested earlier this month. caught our breath and the tape measure came out.” Nunn said he had no idea the buck lived on the 3,000-acre, low-fenced portion of Rain Creek Ranch, which is located between Brady and Menard. “We contacted a scorer with SCI to come out and officially score this animal,” Nunn said. “We were thinking it was going to be good. At 35 inches wide and having a double drop, we knew this was an axis deer that may be rated high in the record book. We took animal to cleaning shed, gutted it, cleaned him up and posed him in the cooler so we could take plenty of pictures.” The buck scored 174 1/8 inches. Please turn to page 21
