Support collegiate shooters at HBSF quail hunt For years, the Higgins Branchini Shooting Foundation has been helping college students realize their dreams of competing in collegiate, national and international clay target shooting sports. The Irving-based foundation’s 2019 fundraiser includes a quail, pheasant and chukar hunt and sporting clays shoot at the world-class Greystone Castle in Mingus to be held Nov. 15-17. Through financial assistance geared to offset the expenses of competitive shooting, the foundation’s goal is for grant recipients to hone their skills, maintain proficiency and compete at venues that would otherwise be out of reach. It has worked. Since its founding in 2011, HBSF-sponsored athletes have won 13 National Collegiate Championships in skeet, international skeet/trap and sporting clays. Some have represented the U.S. on the world stage, becoming world champions and members of U.S. Olympic teams. More than $150,000 has been distributed to 130 shooters across the U.S., including $31,000 to 25 grant recipients in 2019. Three options are available for the hunts, including a half-day hunt; halfday hunt with sporting clays; and two hunts along with an overnight stay at the Orvis-endorsed lodge. The Higgins Branchini Shooting Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, led by President Michael
B. Higgins, Executive Director Melinda Branchini, Secretary/Treasurer Elizabeth Cook, Vice President Steven Wirth and board members Shea Self, Mimi Wilfong, Savannah Thode and an Advisory Committee made up of top shooters and industry veterans. Shooting IN STYLE AT WCR
Wingshooters wanting to experience quail hunting behind great dogs in thick woods don’t need to travel several states away. After decades of habitat management, Wildcat Creek Quail Hunting Resort has what you need a few hours away in northeast Texas. And you’ll hunt in style, with luxurious facilities and 5-star dining awaiting your return from the hunt. WCR is a family affair and the vision of owners Ron and Evonne Parker and their sons. Open for more than a decade, the habitat improvements and hard work have paid off. Quail hunters can experience a true timber quail hunt in the heavily wooded fields, with the birds providing challenging shooting as they dart through the trees. Pheasant hunters will enjoy the fields mixed with open
areas, woods and water. “We want the experience to be first-class but yet not stuffy,” said Ron Parker. Located in Red River County near Detroit, the property consists of 1,200-plus acres that will take hunters back in time. White-tailed deer, feral hog and duck hunts complement the world-class bird hunting. WCR also has competition-style sporting clay stations for parties and corporate events. It’s an experience well worth the short trip, where a memorable quail or pheasant hunting adventure awaits.

You can change a child’s life and hit your target at the 4th Annual CASA Pull For Kids Clay Shoot — Friday, March 27, 2020 at Alpine Shooting Range in Fort Worth. You’re needed now more than ever. Last year, 5,842 children were victims of child abuse and neglect in Tarrant County. These vulnerable children need you to help ease their suffering. CASA (Court-Appointed Special Advocates) of Tarrant County trains and supports volunteers who help children in foster care find safe, permanent homes while speaking up for their best interests. CASA had a life-saving impact in 2018, serving 1,155 children in foster care, but the need is still great. More than 400 children are still waiting for the powerful voice of a CASA volunteer. You can help change the trajectory of these children’s lives by supporting CASA at the Pull for Kids Clay Shoot. Through your support, you give a voice to children in foster care and ensure home is a safe place for every child. The event features two sessions to choose from, raffles with gear, guns and hunting excursions, complimentary lunch, shells, golf carts, branded giveaways, awards for both sessions and a special First Responders Division. Nikon introduces match-ready first focal plane riflescope
Restored Antique
Winchester 1886
• Polish for period-correct finishes • Restore all original markings • Rust blue barrel and magazine tube • Color case harden hammer and lever • Charcoal blue receiver and parts • Engrave Winchester #10 pattern • New butt stock and forend, checker with Winchester standard “H” pattern
The Difference... is in The Details.
Nikon just made competition-grade FFP scopes accessible to everyone. For 2018, Nikon expands its flagship BLACK tactical optics family with the introduction of the FX1000. Competition-ready straight from the box, the BLACK FX1000 combines match-grade features such as a first focal plane optical system, high-speed turrets, integral zero stop and choice of glass-etched MOA or MRAD reticles. To summarize, the new BLACK FX1000 becomes the featurepacked optic long-range shooters have been waiting for — and one that changes the paradigm of how tactical optics are valued. The BLACK FX1000 utilizes Nikon’s proprietary optical glass and multicoating technology to provide exceedingly sharp resolution, and clear target images regardless of distance. The 50mm objective lens in each model not only gathers — but transmits — maximum brightness from first to last light. Nikon’s advanced FX-MOA and FX-MRAD reticles were designed specifically for the first focal plane optical system used in the BLACK FX1000 riflescope. Each reticle is designed to optimize the sight picture and provide the necessary tools for ranging, holdover and windage corrections whether shooting a match or punching paper. The BLACK FX1000’s high-speed turrets allow you to dial-in 25 MOA/10 MRAD of adjustment per revolution with crisp, clean, tactile clicks. These highspeed turrets allow most modern calibers to be dialed in excess of 1,000 yards with a single turn. Built for the constant dialing that comes with long-range precision, the elevation turret debuts Nikon’s all-new integral Return-To-Zero stop that assures you don’t lose your zero once set. BLACK FX1000 riflescopes each have a side focus parallax adjustment located on the left side of the turret block for parallax compensation from 50 yards and out. On illuminated reticle variants, a 10-level rheostat control integrated into the knob features intermittent “off” settings between each brightness level. The BLACK FX1000 is offered in 4-16x50 and 6-24x50 variants, with the choice of FX-MOA or FX-MRAD reticles. The 4-16x50 models provide 90 MOA/25 MRAD maximum internal adjustments and the 6-24x50 models provide 60 MOA/17 MRAD internal adjustments. The BLACK FX1000 riflescopes are built on 30mm tubes from aircraftgrade aluminum alloy with Type-III hard anodizing surface finish for maximum ruggedness and long-term durability. Waterproof, fogproof and shockproof, all BLACK FX1000 models are backed entirely with Nikon’s lifetime repair/ replacement NO-FAULT POLICY.

The
power
OF SHOOTING
Growing industry keeps ramping up By Craig Nyhus
Lone Star Outdoor News At Houston’s American Shooting Centers, local trap, skeet, sporting clays and 5-stand shooters take aim at somewhere between 300,000 and 400,000 clay targets each month. Chief Executive Officer Ed Arrighi said there was no way to estimate the number of total shots taken at the rifle and pistol ranges, other than to say thousands of bullets are fired each day. At the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio, home to the National Skeet Shooting Association and the National Sporting Clays Association, shotgunners attempt to break more than 8.5 million clay targets each year, according to Director Royce Graff. In July, the Texas State 4-H championships will be held at the complex, and, in October, the World Skeet championships and the National Sporting Clays championships. According to White Flyer, the largest clay target manufacturer, the largest shooting clubs will use 5 million clay targets each year, and the total number of clay targets thrown reaches into the hundreds of millions annually. With nearly 7,000 shooting ranges of all sizes in the U.S., it’s easy to see how the firearms and ammunition industry is responsible for as much as $52 billion in economic activity across the country. The growth of participants, estimated at 28 percent since 2001, hasn’t gone unnoticed. The Scholastic Clay Target Program and the Scholastic Action Shooting Program are expecting the largest-ever turnout at the groups’ national championships beginning July 13 at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Ohio, and that comes after a record 2,692 youth shooters from 26 states attended last year. Shooting success stories abound across the country. Names like six-time Olympic medalist and three-time gold medal winner Kim Rhode, two-time gold medal winner Vincent Hancock and Texan gold medalist in double trap, Glenn Eller, garner the attention of shooters worldwide. And, in 2016, Virginia “Ginny” Thrasher became the first medal winner at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics with her win in the 10-meter air rifle competition. The number of participants in target shooting has risen to more than 30 million Americans, up nearly 10 million in a decade. Newer forms of competition, whether for fun or championships, are coming on strong. The exciting 3-gun shooting events, where competitors move through stages, shooting a variety of targets with rifle, pistol and shotgun, holds the position of the fastestgrowing competitive shooting sport, according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation. Charity sporting clays shoots have replaced golf tournaments, with shoots available nearly each weekend. The Operation Game Thief Clay Stoppers events across the state have helped fund equipment and supplies for Texas game wardens, with the North Texas inaugural event scheduled July 26. Overall, the numbers are staggering. More people target shoot than play soccer, baseball or tennis. Female participation in shooting is up 80 percent since 2001. In 2016, more than 20 million people spent $16.9 billion on equipment, and travel related to the sport, supporting more than 329,000 jobs, according to NSSF. Overall, that’s a contribution of more than $46 million to the U.S. economy — per day — and an annual total of $6 billion paid in federal, state and excise taxes.

USE THE CHOICE OF CHAMPIONS WITH EXACTA FROM FIOCCHI
Fiocchi of America brought shotshell production to the United States back in 1984. This was the first of a long line of serious investments into the American market by the Fiocchi family. In more recent years, Fiocchi has invested in state-of-the-art ballistic testing equipment and patterning measuring systems to improve the quality of its shotshells. Considerable investment in loading machines has allowed Fiocchi to increase its capacity to deliver these loads to market. The first commitment to delivering on that promise is to offer only the highest quality shell, without compromise. This is why we have developed our Exacta line of target shells. Putting reliable, consistent performing shells in the hands of the most shooters possible is the driving force behind this line. We hold true to our commitment of using only top-quality components and start-of-the-art loading equipment in the Exacta line to deliver the performance professionals trust when the stakes are highest. Quality first-run magnum lead shot goes into one-piece shot cups, with one-piece cushioned wads propelled by clean-burning powders, topped off by the world-renowned Fiocchi primer. You can have confidence that whether you are opening a new box or case of shells, your leads won’t change, as consistency is paramount in all of Fiocchi’s clay target load lines. Fiocchi’s famous Crushers and White Rinos are flagships of the ultraexclusive Exacta line that you can look for to absolutely crush targets on impact. Reliability
right out of the box Henry Long Ranger Lever Action 6.5 Creedmoor By Nate Skinner
For Lone Star Outdoor News Avid shooters and hunters need a rifle they can pull straight from the box and accurately shoot almost immediately. From my first trigger pull on the Henry Long Ranger Lever Action 6.5 Creedmoor, I knew I was shouldering a firearm that would do just that, and seemingly, a whole lot more. Before I ever fired a round, it was evident that the rifle was weighted and balanced perfectly. It felt like an extension of my arm and shoulder as I steadied my aim downrange on the shooting block. With an overall length of 42.5 inches and weighing in at 7 pounds, it was apparent that the gun would perform well in a variety of scenarios and applications. The Long Ranger 6.5 Creedmoor has a 22-inch barrel and sports the classic look of a saddle gun while encompassing several modern-day components. From an easy to load, flush fit removable magazine with a four-round capacity, to sling swivel studs, a hammer extension, and a drilled and tapped top that’s ready for optics to be mounted, this lever action long gun preserves the tradition and class that Henry is known for. Both the trigger and the action of the rifle operate fluidly from the first shot. A break-in session is not necessary. A chrome, steel bolt provides a strong and consistent lockup between shots, every single time. With a side ejection, nothing is left to hinder a hunter’s quick, follow-up shot if a situation demands it. The safety on the Long Ranger was created with the hunter in mind. Rather than possessing a manual safety button or slider that can be hard to operate with gloves, the gun uses an in-hammer sliding transfer bar as a safety. The smooth performance of the rifle makes sighting in a scope a simple task. The recoil is immediately absorbed by the solid rubber recoil pad attached to the butt of the gun. The pad also prevents any slippage when the rifle is being shouldered. Just about anyone could become comfortable with the Henry Long Ranger Lever Action 6.5 Creedmoor in a matter of minutes. Regardless of physical stature or shooting experience, this rifle gives hunters a reason to be excited about shooting at long distances, not to mention, it will have them anxiously anticipating the upcoming hunting seasons. The Henry Long Ranger is available in .223, .243, .308 and 6.5 Creedmoor.

top-of-the-line Guerini quality and service Target shooters and hunters alike are serious about their over/under shotguns. Top quality, reliability and looks are important, along with the ability to customize the gun to the shooter. But the ability to shoot often, involving the breaking of thousands and thousands of clays over decades, is paramount. “From the Summit and Invictus lines of target shotguns to our upland hunting models, Caesar Guerini shotguns run the gamut,” said Shaun Burkowski, marketing director. “The Summit line starts at just under $4,000 and is an extremely versatile model.” The Summit is available in 12, 20, 28 gauge, and .410. “It also comes in two- and threebarrel sets,” Burkowski said. Guerini uses modern CNC machines that turn out parts infinitely more precise than hand-made parts, with tolerances down to 1/10,000 of an inch. The real value, though, comes in Guerini’s lifetime warranty and pitstop maintenance program. “When you buy a gun from us, service doesn’t stop at the sale,” Burkowski said. “We’re at most of the major competitive shoots each year — our gunsmiths go and service our customers.”
TOTAL SPENDING BY TYPE OF FIREARM
Caesar Guerini has a building in vendor row at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio, where they service customers and have a wide range of demo guns available to try before you buy during all major competitions. The CG PitStop maintenance program allows customers to send in their shotgun for complete service, once per year, at no cost. “All it costs the customer is shipping,” Burkowski said. “Our gunsmiths in the U.S. break the gun down, clean it and ship it back. If it’s at a competition, they’ll do it there.” At the upper end of the targetshooting spectrum is the Invictus line. “It’s the 1 million-round gun,” Burkowski said. “You can shoot it over a lifetime and hand it down to your children and grandchildren. It’s the target shotgun that will outlast you.” The Invictus comes in 12-gauge only, in four styles and eleven models designed for sporting clays and trap competitors who shoot heavily. Shotgun enthusiasts will rave about the Invictus Block that keeps the gun closing tightly and safely after years of use, the adjustable trigger system and the fine, hand-engraving by the worldrenowned Bottega Giovanelli crew in Italy.
For enthusiasts looking for a truly fine upland shotgun, previously an outof-reach luxury item for most, Caesar Guerini offers its Revenant, using modern technology to make a shotgun with the same qualities as a high-end, hand-made gun — at less than 1/5 the cost. “It’s absolutely a work of art,” Burkowski said. It has the craftsmanship you would expect. Comparable guns can cost upwards of $65,000 plus, but the Revenant is available at a retail price just under $13,000. Outdoor Life magazine recently named the Revenant their 2019 Editors Choice. For hunters, Guerini’s Woodlander, Tempio and Tempio Light models provide top-quality craftsmanship and reliability at surprisingly competitive prices. The Tempio, named by Field & Stream magazine as the “Best of the Best,” is one of their most popular field guns. “And all of the field guns have the same lifetime warranty,” Burkowski said. All Caesar Guerini shotguns are made in Italy and serviced by a crew of top gunsmiths in the U.S. in Maryland.
