COMPETITIVE SHOOTING Give it a shot
You’re a relatively new shooter, and you’ve made a few trips to the range with your new pistol, rifle or shotgun. You see the groups of people shooting in some sort of league, but you’re too nervous to approach, thinking all of those other shooters are better than you. But for the most part, shooters are a welcoming lot, so shake the shyness and ask some questions. They will help you, whether in skeet, sporting clays, longrange shooting or 3-Gun challenges. And soon you’ll be a regular competitor — and maybe even a winner.

THE FULL EXPERIENCE AT BERETTA GALLERY The Beretta Gallery in Dallas is now fully open and fully stocked. The Gallery has been open with restrictions since April 6, but the restrictions are lifted and customers may now enjoy a normal shopping experience. “We just got another shipment of handguns yesterday,” said Gallery manager Cory Mays. “Our gun shelves are full, so come and shop like normal.” Mays said the store was doing well while being open with restrictions since April 6. “We have procedures in place, so come on in, you can try the clothes on, you can handle the guns,” he said. Beretta’s Italian headquarters was right in the heart of Italy’s coronavirus outbreak, in the city of Brescia. Its factory was among the first to close down, and a safe reopening was planned gradually. Using the same engineering approach the company takes in developing its firearms, Beretta applied the best monitoring technologies to allow its people to operate in total safety, becoming an example for other industries. Beretta was the first in Italy to submit its entire workstaff to tests. Mays said the manufacturing has kept pace with demand. “We’re completely restocked on the 9mm handguns, which have been extremely popular,” he said. “And the 1301 shotguns, our tactical shotguns, have been selling like crazy, but we’re completely stocked. People have taken a real interest in home defense shotguns and handguns.” Mays also said the Beretta 694, the company’s new over-and-under shotgun designed specifically for competition shooting, has been very popular.

MORE CHANCES TO WIN IN THIRD YEAR OF TEXAS BB CHALLENGE Opening day will be here before we know it, and with everyone being isolated for so many months, dove season promises to be a great time of bringing people together again in the outdoors. The beauty of dove hunting is that it’s a social sport, with its own built-in social distancing. The next few months are exciting times for the Texas Dove Hunters Association release team who are already making plans to band and release Eurasian-collared dove all across Texas. The release team is made up of 12 TDHA members who will cover the state, releasing 800 more birds for the 2020-2021 dove season in Texas. For the third year in a row, birds are being banded and released in order to obtain more information about this invasive species that has made its way into the United States and has become a common bird harvested in Texas. Bands do not expire from one year to the next to aid in the research and allow for more data to be collected. Each year’s data provides more information about the migratory patterns, habitat preferences and lifespan, among many other things, of the Eurasian-collared dove. A collared dove is much larger than a mourning dove but smaller than a pigeon. It is easily identifiable by the black feathers forming a ring around its neck resembling a collar. With more than 2,100 Eurasians having been released over a 3-year period, the odds of a hunter harvesting a bird with a TDHA band are improving annually. The big question is, when a band is found, if 8|
the hunter who harvested the bird entered in the Texas BB Challenge? In 2018, of the 500 birds that were released, 16 bands were reported by hunters. Only four had entered the TBBC and were qualified to win a top prize. In 2019, 800 more birds were released and three times the number were reported from the previous year. Of the 46 bands reported, 12 were entered in the contest and qualified to win a top prize. With 800 more being released later this summer and no expiration on the bands from one year to the next, the odds of harvesting a banded collared dove will be even greater. Those who enter the 2020 Texas BB Challenge will have a chance to win a truck provided by Hoffpauir Auto Group in Lampasas, a Polaris Ranger donated by Hoffpauir Polaris in Goldthwaite, an exotic hunt donated by RecordBuck Ranch, guns, a cast & blast for three donated by Casa Arroyo Sporting Lodge, Ultimate Dove packages including guns, Chippewa snake boots, custom bird belts, Chama Chairs and lots more. There also is an outfitters category with a trophy trout fishing trip donated by Baffin Bay Rod & Gun. Hunters have the opportunity to win prizes without even harvesting a banded bird when they enter during one of TDHA’s social media promotions. Enter between now and July 15 to be eligible for the early bird drawing for a TDHA-logo Supreme Field shotgun. The early bird promotion started on June 1 and has produced an overwhelming number of entries. There will be other promotions before opening day giving entrants the opportunity to win some great prizes even SHOOTING SPORTS 2020

John Wayne, HUNTING LIKE TEDDY The comeback of the lever-action rifle By Craig Nyhus
Lone Star Outdoor News There’s one of them on just about every lease in Texas. The hunting is done for the morning, and lease mates are contemplating lunch or a nap. “Let’s go shoot some steel,” their friend says, pulling out his old, lever-action .30-30. His friends wonder why the lever-action, around since 1860, was once the choice of hunters, cowboys and ranchers. Until they take their turn. The typical lever-action is shorter, lighter and thinner than a bolt-action rifle, and the shooters realize why it was the perfect size for hanging on the wall or sliding into a saddle scabbard. The magazine usually holds at least a half-dozen rounds. The rifle shoots fast and loads quickly. And, if you are lefthanded, it doesn’t matter. And, the rifles are just cool, and fun to shoot. After each hunter takes his turn, they talk about John Wayne, Chuck Connors, the hunting exploits of Teddy Roosevelt, cowboys and cowboy-shooting events, and how the lever-action rifles have evolved. Cowboy Action shooting has re-emerged as a popular shooting sport, with manufacturers bringing back old cartridges like the .45 Long Colt, .44 Russian and .45 Schofield. Modern technology has entered the picture, and big game hunters are joining the chorus of hunters enthralled by the lever-action. Different calibers, like Henry’s 6.5 Creedmoor and even other manufacturer’s 7mm Magnum and .300 WSM, are available. Side-eject mechanisms allow for a scope to be mounted low. Once limited to flatpoint or roundnose bullets because of the way the bullets rest against the primer of the round in front of it in the magazine, now Hornady developed its LEVERevolution ammo in several calibers, allowing the use of a spitzer-type bullet. And the rifles are accurate. While most shooting is quick, repetitive shots at shorter ranges, long-range matches are now common, showing off the precision of the rifles. Videos show the Henry Long Ranger in 6.5 Creedmoor repeatedly hit targets at 450 yards. Old-timers talk nostalgically about shooting their first deer with a lever-action. With all of the options available, contemporary shooters and hunters no longer have to wonder why.

DICKINSON GREENWING OVER & UNDER Since Dickinson Arms added the new Greenwing 12-gauge to its lineup, this over/under model has become one of the brand’s top sellers. It is built with the same attention to detail found in Dickinson’s other over/under and side-by-side models, delivering excellent balance and dependable performance on the range or in the field. Despite this level of quality, looks and performance, the Greenwing retails for only $700. The first things shooters will notice is the quality Turkish walnut stock and foregrip featuring 22-linesper-inch checkering for a quality look and feel. This shotgun’s beautiful woodwork and fit-and-finish are complimented by a choice of Silver Satin or Blued receivers, both options boasting full coverage scroll engraving with a unique waterfowl design and Dickinson logo. The Greenwing is available in 26-, 28- and 30-inch barrel lengths to accommodate different shooting needs. Among the standard features that stand out on a gun in this price class are the Greenwing’s automatic ejectors and five supplied choke tubes. Like every Dickinson shotgun, the Greenwing is also backed by the company’s U.S.-based customer service and Limited Lifetime Warranty. The Greenwing also features an innovative new safety and barrel selector mechanism. The safety mechanism features an integrated toggle switch
used to select which barrel shoots first. Instead of traditional “O” and “U” markings, the switch uses easy-to-see red and white dots to indicate which barrel has been selected. The barrel selector can be operated whether the safety mechanism itself is in the safe or fire position. Steve Comus, Safari Club International director of publications, book author and shooting journalist, recently tested the Dickinson Greenwing and gave it glowing reviews. “While shooting targets with this gun, I purposefully picked some stations that featured dropping targets and had a lot of fun hitting them easily and repeatedly,” Comus wrote. “Similar aerobatics performed by teal or even quail can challenge guns that don’t shoot right to the point of aim. No problem with a gun that handles like the Greenwing.” Comus was equally impressed with the Greenwing’s mechanics. “The gun features automatic ejectors, and do they eject,” he wrote. “Empties are launched several feet when ejected. And, when two empties are ejected simultaneously, they land within a couple inches of each other. This is a sign of very well-timed ejectors and another added touch that usually is not found in any but the really high-end guns.” Comus wrote similar praise for the Greeenwing’s aesthetics.
“Diamond point checkering at 22-lines-per-inch on both the piston grip and the forend is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, as is the outline of the checking pattern itself. The Schnabel forend is a nice touch and a pleasing part of the overall configuration of the stock and fore end.” The Greenwing is available through more than two dozen Dickinson Arms retailers across Texas and Louisiana.

Now Is The Time To Buy American Made With the company motto, “Made in America, Or Not Made At All,” it’s no secret that Henry Repeating Arms is a huge proponent of putting Americans to work making American products. It is also no secret that manufacturing jobs are among the most common to be offshored for many different reasons. Keeping production domestic is a big and expensive commitment, but we are in the business of making “America’s Rifle,” and you cannot do that overseas. After all, the lever action rifle is America’s unique contribution to international firearms design, invented in 1860 by Benjamin Tyler Henry in New Haven, Connecticut. From the genuine American walnut from Missouri, to the gun barrel quality steel from Ohio, to the hardened brass receivers from Pennsylvania, we have made a commitment from Day 1 to assemble our rifles and shotguns using domestic materials and craftsmanship. And we are not alone in this either. While not the majority, there are plenty of manufacturers, big and small, that have made a similar commitment to keeping their production on U.S. soil. This year, the challenges surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic has affected every domestic manufacturer out there. From supply chain delays, to offices closing, to protecting the health and wellbeing of employees, it has not been a walk in the park. Small businesses have been forced to shutter left and right, others have been forced to close down shop and wait out greener pastures, and
14 |
yet others have slowed to a crawl by forces outside of their own purview. But if we stick together as a country and as patriots, we can get through this and come out stronger on the other side when all is said and done. Henry Repeating Arms plans on being around for a long time to come, and we have been hit by similar challenges in the past. For example, in 2012, Hurricane Sandy packed quite a punch for our New Jersey manufacturing facility and flooded the computerized portion of the factory floor with 3 feet of seawater and damaged more than 100 machines. We bounced back with a slow but sure recovery, just like all domestic manufacturers are trying to do now. That’s not possible without consumer support though. Chances are that you plan on purchasing something soon. It could be a block of cheddar cheese, a new pickup truck or a lever-action rifle in .45-70 to lay the smack down on some hogs. No matter what that purchase might be, you have a choice to make before spending your hard-earned money. Before you pull out your wallet or click that checkout button, consider where the product is made and who benefits from your show of monetary support. Is it American made? If so, you are choosing to support American manufacturers in a time when that support is needed most, and on behalf of all American manufacturers, we can’t thank you enough.
