THE SAME, BUT NEW Capt. Peacock Yachts & Expeditions has been well-known for years for providing the ultimate experience in peacock bass fishing on Brazil’s Rio Negro River. Not a company content to rest on its laurels, Capt. Peacock is upgrading the experience without elevating the price. “We are a sportfishing company,” said President Leoardo Leao. “The worldrecord peacock bass was caught with us in 2010. But you can have comfort, convenience and even luxury — and still fish.” Capt. Peacock takes customers to another level of fishing experience for a trip of a lifetime, with first-class services. The same river, a new itinerary The crew at Capt. Peacock has increased its efforts to locate new Amazonian waters, not previously accessible, with trophy peacock bass. And peacock bass isn’t the only species to target, with arowana, rainbow bass, redtail catfish in abundance. For 2019-2020, brand new Tracker bass boats will be in use, and, you’ll fish with the best equipment, including Shimano reels. “We’re the only one to have the Tracker boats,” Leao said. “Customers really appreciate that.”

New yacht, but the same price Rio Negro Queen will be your floating hotel when you fish with Capt. Peacock. The new yacht, features 12 deluxe staterooms with glass walls from floor to ceiling, two private master balcony suites and one presidential suite. The yacht also provides a pool, solarium area, gym, spa, bar/lounge and restaurant for up to 30 guests. The same team, but new services Capt. Peacock provides a Michelin chef for unforgettable meals while aboard the Rio Negro Queen. And, for those who need to stay in touch, something almost unheard of in the Amazon — internet and satellite television at no extra charge. For fun-seekers, a jet ski and water toys also are available, again at no extra charge. “You can fish hard and still have fun,” Leao said. “We can set you up to visit a local village or go on other tours.” Leao is excited for old and new customers to experience all of the new things at Capt. Peacock. “It feels almost like it’s the inaugural season — we’ve refreshed the business,” he said. “We’re progressively improving our business, but not charging more.” You can follow Capt. Satisfying Texans’ for THIRST

travel

By Craig Nyhus

Lone Star Outdoor News “We had another group from Texas here last month.” It’s a common refrain from hunting and fishing outfitters around the world, as Texans span the globe in pursuit of adventure. The wanderlust sends them, often in family groups, to hunts on the African plains, mountains of British Columbia and Alaska and, for some, to remote areas of Asia. Fly-anglers head to streams from New Mexico and Colorado to New Zealand and Patagonia. Offshore enthusiasts head to Costa Rica and Panama. And bass anglers trek to South America to feel the powerful tug of a peacock bass on the Amazon River and its tributaries, and afterward relax on a luxury boat. Be aware of the sayings from each part of the world, though, as repeat trips are likely.

“Nobody goes to Africa once.” “Nobody goes to the Amazon once.” Texans don’t have to leave the state to satisfy the traveling bug, though. The Big Bend Mountains await, with mule deer, pronghorn or, for a lucky few, a desert bighorn sheep. The Texas Gulf Coast, a long trip for Panhandle residents, provides inshore and offshore opportunities, and Hill Country rivers offer a chance at the state fish, the Guadalupe bass. Why do Texans travel so much? Maybe it’s to escape the summer heat, especially when it’s winter in the Southern Hemisphere. Maybe it’s the state’s great economy. Or, maybe, it’s instilled in the state’s psyche, a desire to explore, see new things, pursue new challenges and test our abilities while pursuing different species in different locations. One thing is likely. Wherever you go, one of the last groups of customers was probably from Texas.

JOIN THE TEXAS BB CHALLENGE HUNT Free Range The first Texas Banded Bird Challenge ended on January 31. Texas Dove Hunters Association initiated the Texas BB Challenge as a research program on the Eurasian collared dove. Eurasian collared dove were trapped, banded and released back into the wild in various areas all over Texas. As these birds were harvested throughout the duration of the contest, the locations where the bands were retrieved was compared to where they were trapped and released. “Since the best results of any research program are based on how many birds are actually reported, we are excited to see where these birds will be found in the upcoming years,” said Bobby Thornton, TDHA’s founder. “This will enable us to learn more about age and migration habits.” In order to increase the odds of having these bands reported, prizes were placed on the bands. The Texas BB Challenge has also been a useful tool to promote and market the mission and goals of the organization. With the help of donors and sponsors, the first-year campaign was a huge success. The top prize for reporting a band was a Polaris Ranger donated by Hoffpauir Polaris of Goldthwaite. Other prizes were: a Supreme Field shotgun donated by CZ-USA, a $500 Bass Pro Shops gift card donated by Bass Pro Shops San Antonio, a pair of Chippewa snake boots donated by Chippewa and a Frio 24 Vault cooler for each of the winners donated by Frio Ice Chests. In the Outfitter's Division, any outfitter who was entered and had a paid hunter harvest a band was entered to win a trophy trout fishing trip to Baffin Bay. A total of 463 birds were banded and released between July 28, 2018 and September 16, 2018. Sixteen bands were reported and of those 16, four were qualified entries in the BB Challenge. Mike Baum, of Houston, won the Polaris; Mike Camacho, of Beeville, won the CZ-USA shotgun; Denver Eichler, of Sandia, won the $500 gift card to Bass Pro Shops; and John Carpenter, of Missouri City, won the Chippewa snake boots. Outfitter Mark Katzfey of Katzfey Ranches in

AOUDAD in Llano County

Sept. - Oct. 2019 George West won the trophy troutfishing trip in the Outfitter’s Division. Preliminary results of the study showed most birds were harvested from 3 to 50 miles from where they were released. One particular bird flew more than 100 miles from where it was released to within 5 miles of where it was trapped. Over time, results like this will tell more about these invasive birds now found all over Texas and beyond its borders. The 2019 BB Challenge entries may be purchased beginning June 1. The early bird entry period runs from June 1 to July 15. All early bird entrants will be entered into a drawing for a TDHA Special Edition CZ-USA Field Supreme shotgun. New this year is the chance to win a new truck from Hoffpauir with the harvest of a qualified band. Entries can be purchased any time throughout the contest prior to harvesting a banded bird, and entrants must pass a polygraph upon request. The contest runs from September 1, 2019 to January 23, 2020. “The exciting thing for hunters in Texas is that the bands don't expire from year to year, increasing the chances of winning every year as even more birds with bands are released," Thornton said. “In 2019 we will release 800 birds adding to the 463 released in 2018. The chances to win just keep getting better. Don't go to the field without entering the 2019 BB Challenge!”

MODEL, OUTDOORSWOMAN

debuts memoir By Julia Bunch

For Lone Star Outdoor News Longtime Dallasite Helen Martin has stood between a male lion and a Land Rover full of fresh meat in Uganda, and she’s stood still at fittings while the world’s most prestigious fashion designers such as Oscar de la Renta or Donna Karan drape lavish fabrics on her to create a couture masterpiece. She’s shot bighorn sheep in Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, and she’s been shot by some of the great photographers of modern times such as Victor Skrebneski. In her recent memoir High Fashion, High Adventure, Martin details her experiences as both a couture runway model and a worldwide hunter. The autobiography, published in November 2018, jumps between stories of Martin’s career walking runways for Yves Saint Laurent, Armani and Valentino, among others, and tales of stalking large game throughout several continents. The compact book, only about 150 pages, is peppered with photographs and charming anecdotes that come from living a life in proximity to fabulous people and exotic animals. Martin was living the vogue life of a model in the 1960s when she met her late husband, Jim Brockie. She was modeling at an event in Marshall Field’s iconic store in Chicago when this Texan came in. “I was so interested in him because he was on his way to Alaska to hunt,” Martin said. “Well, I was a city girl, so that was so intriguing.” Courtship followed, as well as a happy marriage as Martin relocated to Dallas. In fact, on the couple’s second date, Brockie took Martin to a shooting range. Martin, who had no experience hunting or shooting, quickly became enthralled with the sport, giving her the itch for hunting and stalking expeditions all over the world. Over the next few decades, Martin would travel to take a leopard and elephant in Kenya, pheasants throughout Scotland, a few antelope in Africa, fallow deer in Spain, Alpine ibex in the Swiss Alps and more, all the while taking precise notes in a journal that would later become the outline for High Fashion, High Adventure. Her greatest — and toughest — outdoorswoman accomplishment, she said, was earning her Grand Slam title, becoming only the 14th woman to do so, by taking one each of the four different North American wild sheep: Dall, stone, bighorn, and desert bighorn. The book also has several pieces of advice for aspiring international, big game hunters. “You must practice and practice with your firearms. You have to be out at the shooting range all the time,” Martin said. “You must know your animals. Study their terrain, where they live, their behavior. Don’t count on the guide to do that for you.” High Fashion, High Adventure is available at online booksellers. Helen Martin

PLAN TIME BEFORE YOUR HUNT TO BEAT JET LAG KhoiSan Adventures offers both hunting and photo safari planning in several African countries, including Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. What they have found over the years is a combination of both can make the trip more enjoyable and relaxing. The trip to Africa is a long one, and the resulting jet lag can mess with hunters’ systems. “Flying and driving for days and then hurrying up to go out and hunt takes away from the trip,” said Doyle Bruner, who operates KhoiSan Adventures with his wife and wildlife biologist, Gail. “We’ve found when people take a day or two to deal with the inevitable jet lag, they enjoy their hunt much more.” KhoiSan offers trips where, upon arrival, the photo safari comes first. “You get comfortable with the terrain, the altitude in some cases and the animals,” Bruner said. “Then, when the hunt begins you are rested and ready.” Other trips may begin with some touring of popular areas, and often the hunt concludes with a few days of rest

world-class PEACOCK BASS FISHING New luxury floating hotel makes adventure complete

Acute Angling recently gained the exclusive rights to one of the Amazon’s hottest trophy peacock bass fisheries: the Rio Curicuriari, deep inside Amazonia’s most remote Indian Reservation. So, to access this untouched fishery, they built the new Blackwater Adventurer. The brand-new floating hotel is just as exciting as the Curicuriari’s world-record size peacock bass. Featuring first-class amenities and luxurious comfort with gourmet dining, fine wines and a fullystocked, open bar — there’s no roughing it on the Adventurer! The craft’s navigational design is different from anything Acute Angling has ever built. The Curicuriari, where it was conceived, is a navigational challenge— with 90 miles of rocks and rapids in its lower reaches, making it pretty much inaccessible by normal vessels. Acute Angling built its new flagship on a super shallow-drafting barge hull, using super-safe Cessna Caravan floatplanes to deliver anglers in comfort and ease, bypassing the difficulties. The floatplane’s capacity of eight anglers also defined the Blackwater Adventurer’s design. Limited to pleasantly intimate eight-angler groups, all guests enjoy spacious private cabins: fully appointed with private bathrooms, hot showers and individual air-conditioners. And, by simply

removing a divider, all cabins convert to couple’s suite with king-sized beds and two of everything. But it’s not just about luxury. It’s about fishing success. The Adventurer’s shallow draft ensures it gets to the fish, and its mobility allows it to keep its waters unpressured. The Adventurer provides the best of both worlds for the angler. This fishing machine was built to access the Rio Curicuriari, but no sooner did we post the 2019 schedule, it sold out. So, once the fall season ends, we’re moving it into the Rio Negro basin with a full schedule in place for January and February of 2020. Since its big sister, the Blackwater Explorer is already sold out for next season, the Blackwater Adventurer provides an exciting new option for peacock bass anglers. Call now to find out about our specially priced introductory group packages and enjoy luxury and fishing productivity on the fishing trip of a lifetime.

WHAT LIES BEYOND THE MOUNTAIN Story by Lili Sams Watching my majestic moose antlers sway back and forth on the back of one of the pack horses brought the whole experience full circle. The horseback riding, the moose, the friendships, the experience; it checked all the boxes. It wasn’t the same adventure I was picturing; it was more. The landscape of British Columbia is achingly beautiful. The mountains lined with colors of yellow and orange, the deep blue of Williston Lake took my breath away as we soared above the ridgeline in the Super Cub. By morning, the fall colors would be covered by a foot of snow. The silence in the mountains as the snow fell softly on the trees was so complete. As Texans, this land of snow and ice was enchanting and lovely. We hunted with Trevis Booker (known to all as Booker) of Wicked River Outfitters. Booker’s personality made you feel like you were best friends after a few hours of knowing him. A true character, he shows class and care, although he can drink and curse with the best of them. Always smiling, laughing and talking with a thick Canadian accent, he turns shy when a camera is pointed his way. We trekked hours each day on horseback, weaving up and down peaks and valleys. It’s a place where you forge your own path. You learn to use the moonlight as your guide, ducking from tree branches on the way back to camp after a long day. There is a special camaraderie that builds from swapping stories huddled around the wood-burning stove, field dressing a monster moose or riding horseback for hours. That connection is unlike any other. When you open yourself up to a new experience, you will be rewarded.
