Being a product of the 60s and car-crazy, Porsche ownership one day was certainly a goal. I remember playing for hours with my 917 Gulf-colored matchbox car dreaming like all young boys about racing cars and driving Porsches. I have been fortunate to have had the chance now to do both while living in some beautiful places around the world.
Like many in Houston, I had a career in oil and gas that afforded us an opportunity to see the world and enjoy an expat lifestyle. In the late 80's I was in So Cal, first getting my BS in Petroleum Engineering, then an MBA. My first engineering job was in SoCal, working on installing the last two offshore platforms in California. In the motorsports arena, once there was some sufficient income, I joined SCCA as a flagger and later started racing go-karts. While Porsche ownership would have been great early in life, funds were being diverted to other Motorsport passions. However, exposure to Porsches was high and I attended the 1997 Los Angeles auto show where the new Boxster was displayed...I remember it fondly, silver with a burgundy interior. That car, mid-engine, and a convertible to me was the machine to have. That dream came through, but it took a few years.
Fast forward a decade and now we are preparing for our fourth major career move after assignments in New Orleans, Houston, and Stavanger, Norway. This time it's to the land under...Australia... the bank account has improved and there wasn't even another car to consider...I immediately located a used first gen arena red 986 Boxster and joined Porsche Club Australia, Victoria chapter. Now living in Melbourne, I was finally a proud Porsche owner. Fun fact, from what I was told per capita, there are more Porsches in Australia than even Germany...and like Americans, the car culture in Australia is very strong. With Porsche club, my street Boxster was naturally off to the racetrack for time trails at great tracks like Phillip Island, Winton, and Sandown. Well, what happens in Porsche clubs?...you meet great people and one thing leads to another. First, it was an opportunity to participate in the 2009 edition of Targa Tasmania (an annual tarmac rally around the island
