Despite Planning and Saving, Hunger Still Happens At age 60, Larry has experienced his share of unfortunate events that would forever change his life. As an employee for a local steel mill for 39 years, Larry created a comfortable life for himself and his wife. He was earning $60,000 a year and had purchased a house in which he planned to spend the rest of his life. That all changed when Larry was involved in an accident on the job; a 590 pound steel beam fell on him and left him seriously injured. Larry received a settlement for $3,000 from the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation but accumulated more than $9,000 worth of medical bills - and was left permanently injured. Soon the bills began to pile up. Larry continued to try and work, but due to his health condition he was eventually “let go” by the steel mill. To top it off, Larry lost his pension. He and his wife had to sell their house for less than it was worth and his car was repossessed. Larry filed for social security and moved into a one bedroom low-income apartment with his wife. With rent, utilities and medication, a full meal became hard to come by. Larry and his wife signed up for food stamps, but only receive $18 a month. “You can’t live on four cans of green beans a month; hunger is the same for everyone.” Fortunately, Larry heard about the LSS Food Pantry on Champion

Avenue from his brother-in-law. His first visit to the pantry was about 2 years ago and he has been going twice a month ever since. Larry says the food pantry’s usage of the USDA food pyramid has helped him to plan healthy meals. “Without this place, my wife and I would only be eating mac ‘n cheese and Ramen noodles.” “You plan and save your whole life and then something unexpected happens and takes it all away,” Larry said. “I did everything right, and I’m not used to asking for handouts.” Despite his circumstances, Larry is very grateful for being able to have a decent meal. “We would starve if we didn’t come here. The pantry feeds us.”

President’s Message

Sending Help & Hope! After devastating storms ripped through the South in late April, LSS’ disaster response team went into high gear collecting 200 personal hygiene kits and 100 cleaning supply kits. The kits, along with the LSS shower trailer, made the 600 mile journey to Cullman, AL in efforts to bring needed supplies to town residents during the rebuilding process. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter!

Dear Friends, One of my favorite prayers is attributed to St. Francis and reads in part: “Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow love; where there is injury, pardon; Where there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; Where there is sadness, joy…” I have always been moved by these words, words that in part soberly speak to the plight of so many. Yet St. Francis reminds us that there is an even greater reality, a greater power that enables us to overcome hatred, injury, discord, doubt, despair, darkness, and sadness in a world

groaning to give new birth. How can this change come about? It comes about when we, each one of us, become willing “instruments” of our Lord’s peace, a divine peace that trumps the human condition and made manifest in love, pardon, union, faith, hope, light and joy. And I believe that LSS is dedicated to helping others overcome this sense of “despair.” It is for them most of all that we offer our presence and programs, that they might experience “hope” – possibly by way of a warm meal, a clean bed, a bag of groceries or a word of encouragement. It is in such things, small and great, that peace can come into their lives, and ours. What a joy it is to recognize God’s call on our lives – and what a privilege it is to be able to respond. And so I want to thank each and every one of you, my fellow employees, our kind volunteers and generous donors, for standing together faithfully and sacrificially in our Lord’s service. May we continue to grow into this living prayer, “Lord, make us instruments of your peace.” Amen.

“I bequeath the sum of $_____ to Lutheran Social Services of Central Ohio in Worthington, OH.” “I devise and bequeath __% of the remainder and residue of property owned at my death, whether real or personal, and wherever located

New Stop Added to Food Distributions Northern Ohio Ministries, a program of Lutheran Social Services of Northern Ohio, has partnered with the Cleveland Foodbank to expand its free food distribution to northern Richland County. The new distribution, located at The Outlet across the street from Crestview Schools, will take place on the third Wednesday of every month. The free food distributions, which also include stops in Ashland and Nova, currently serve more than 500 households a month. During a recent distribution, a young girl handed a volunteer a note that said, “Thank you. This is the only food we have,” signed

Amanda, 9 years old. Northern Ohio Ministries also offers a free lunch program during the summer months for local area children. In many counties, the National School Lunch Program provides a daily meal to more than half of the school population. For some children, a school lunch is the only meal they have throughout the day. Offering a free lunch program is a way to ensure that children don’t go hungry throughout the summer. For more information on these programs, please call (877) 741-3331.
