THE
Tubman Towers, named in honor of Harriet Tubman, is an LSS affordable housing community located in Springfield, which provides a safe, friendly living environment for 99 seniors. The facility was recently awarded funding through Ohio Housing Finance Agency‘s Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program that will be used for a $4 million renovation, including updating the public spaces, adding a new community room, turning efficiency apartments into one-bedrooms and installing a gurney-sized elevator. Originally constructed in 1970 by the Daughters of Jerusalem, LSS began managing the property in 2000. This HUD-funded building has been a Current entrance to Tubman Towers fixture in the community, but has seen very little rehabilitation in its nearly 45 years of operation. “We are very excited to receive these funds, which will allow us to modernize the space and create a better living environment for all residents,” said Jody Glidewell, LSS executive director of affordable housing. “Not only will it look better, but residents should be better able to age in place.”

Thanks to the support of generous donors, progress on Nourishing Our Neighbors campaign, which will fund a new LSS Delaware County Food Pantry, is moving forward. Currently, we are at 73% of our goal of raising $1 million to fund this essential project. These funds will go toward building renovations, purchasing a mobile pantry truck, coolers, freezers and food, and other operating expenses. The new storefront pantry will be located at 73 London Rd. on the south side of the city. Renovations will start soon to turn the former retail building into a pantry conducive for clients to shop, similar to a grocery store. The space will include the pantry as well as a warehouse for food storage, which will also serve as a produce hub to accept deliveries and facilitate distribution throughout the county. Once operational, the pantry will provide much needed food to approximately 1,000 families a month. This will be in addition to the 60 families a month served by the mobile pantry food distributions in Sunbury and Ashley. You can help make this pantry a reality to the people who need our help in Delaware County. 13% of the county’s residents are eligible for food pantry assistance. An average of 976 monthly food pantry visits are reported by existing Delaware County pantries. With an average household size of 2.68 (U.S. Census Bureau), 8,807 monthly pantry visits would be required for every eligible family to be served. Many people who visit the pantry are simply trying to make ends meet. People like Judy. Judy and her husband, a veteran who is on disability after breaking his back, were getting by until her niece and her three children moved in. Now, the family regularly visits the food distribution in Ashley to help make ends meet.
“It’s been a struggle, but you have to help out family,” said Judy, who retired from Honda to take care of her husband after his accident and opened up her home when her niece had nowhere else to go. “This food distribution allows me to get a lot of what we need and save my money to buy items like milk and meat and other things that I don’t get here.” To make sure others like Judy and her family - those who have simply hit a rough patch and need a little help - don’t go hungry, please give today at www. lssfoodpantries.org. Over the past century and into the present, we have possessed an unwavering commitment to the mission of “creating a better world by serving people in need.” And although LSS might state it differently, I am confident the essence of that mission resonates with you – echoing your personal values and sense of calling to care for our neighbors. This unity of purpose is affirmed in your support of LSS, evidencing a culture of caring as we work together in common cause for the betterment of our brothers and sisters in need, helping them to
help themselves walk the pathway toward healing and wholeness. LSS has been blessed to serve the hungry, homeless and hurting, so when an opportunity to provide much needed food to the hungry in Delaware County arose, as you read in the cover article, we were enthusiastic. We feel very privileged to be able to bring our resources to help people in our communities. During this summer season of vacations, barbeques and other summer fun, I ask that you remember our neighbors in need and prayerfully consider making a gift to support the new LSS Delaware County Food Pantry. Kensington Place Adds Assisted Living After more than 20 years of providing exclusively independent living services to its residents, Kensington Place has recently begun a multi-phase project to add assisted living care to the 126 apartment community located in Columbus. The $ 1.2 million conversion to assisted living services will allow for current residents to age in place at Kensington, providing them the opportunity to stay in a familiar and comfortable setting. “Residents who need more extensive care previously unavailable to them through our independent living only services will now have the opportunity to receive the care they need all while staying in their current apartment,” said Penny Smith, resident director for Kensington Place. “Couples who may be functioning at different levels can now conceivably live in the same apartment with their loved one.” New services include 24-hour on-call licensed nurse and care assistants, an emergency response system with wireless bedroom and bathroom pull cords, GPS

Updates to LSS Disaster Response The LSS Disaster Response program is being reorganized and refined to better serve the needs of our communities and promote good stewardship of joint resources. Beginning July 1, the program will primarily serve a coordination function, connecting those impacted by disaster with volunteers and resources to help them recover their housing needs and offer spiritual care. This will be accomplished by LSS coordinating such efforts with Disaster Preparedness Response Teams (DPRT) within each of the Ohio Lutheran Synods, the LCMS Ohio District and their member congregations. The key changes to the program are the establishment of the DPRT and donations of material goods will no longer be warehoused. Donations will be collected when a specific need arises, thereby avoiding costly rental of
warehouse space. Under this new organization, the synods, district and their congregations will be more directly involved, especially in disaster preparedness, as well as timely and effective response to actual needs resulting from a disaster. The new system will promote efficiency and good stewardship by expending the majority of resources only when an actual disaster occurs. “Agencies involved in disaster response work have to be flexible to meet the changing environment. I am pleased LSS of Central Ohio is willing to make adjustments to their disaster response program so they can continue to address the needs of those impacted by a disaster.” Pastor Michael Stadie, Program Director, Lutheran Disaster Response US.
