Building a Home While Building Relationships
The Upper Valley Career Center Trades and Industry students have been building project homes on area lots for 20 years, using donated money from the late Paul Duke of Troy. Funds accumulated from selling these homes enabled the district to construct a 7,200 square foot addition, which provided a fully enclosed, heated site for the construction program to build module homes for individuals with disabilities. Laura Zureich, Superintendent of Shelby County Board of Developmental Disabilities, shared how this project came about at no cost, “We had a generous donor, someone who wanted their money to go toward a modular home in Shelby County that would be completely wheelchair accessible.” Rick Lenhart, Career Center Instructor, who will oversee this joint project added, “I think this collaboration is a phenomenal opportunity. As the 120 carpentry, HVAC, electrical, building and grounds students work, they are asked to envision themselves in a wheelchair.” The students are also learning about the special housing needs of the disabled such as the need for wider doorways, lowered windows and switches,
