THE SYMBOLISM OF THE LSSC NURSING PIN

The design of the pin is the shape of a shield. The shield represents the protective nature of nursing practice, and identifies the Registered Nurse as the patient advocate.

In the center of the shield, there is a golden cup which represents the cup of knowledge. Knowledge is the foundation that supports decision-making and upon which our practice is built.

The cross on the pin represents human suffering and also hope. Nurses are dedicated to relieving pain and suffering, and are reminded that hope is one of the greatest gifts that they can instill as part of their professional practice.

Beneath the cross is a pair of doves that represent peace and love. The peace is that inner peace that comes from truly loving another human being as you care for him with all your resources. The love is the love of humanity and it is this love that individualizes our interactions with each patient, and relates to him that someone cares.

Surrounding the pin is the name of the college. Lake-Sumter State College has been, and will always be your “window to the world”. It serves you as a lasting resource as you continue to grow, and strive, to become all that you desire to become in life.

FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE PLEDGE

“I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence of this assembly, to pass my life in purity and to practice my profession faithfully. I will abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous, and will not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug. I will do all in my power to maintain and elevate the standard of my profession, and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping and all family affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my calling. With loyalty will I endeavor to aid the physician in his work, and devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care”.
