HOW WE HELP REFUGEES Help them secure safe housing, food, cash assistance, public health screenings, health care, and social security card applications;
REFUGEE & IMMIGRATION SERVICES: HELPING RESETTLE REFUGEES IN OUR COMMUNITY SINCE 1980 LSS serves those who have been granted the status of refugee, asylees and other immigration status approved by our country’s State Department. A refugee is defined as a person who is living outside their country of nationality and cannot return due to a well-founded fear of being persecuted or killed on the basis of race, religion, nationality, gender and/or membership to a particular social or political group. LSS staff members pave the way for refugees in learning about the American culture, government requirements and employment processes. Lutheran Immigration and Resettlement Services (LIRS), Episcopal Migration Ministries (EMM), the Department of Children and Families (DCF) Office of Refugee Services and others contract with us to provide the services needed. Our goal is to promote long-term economic self-sufficiency and effective resettlement for refugees, entrants and asylees. “Refugee” covers the status of all individuals in our program.
