How Can You Help?

Gathering Food. Sharing Resources. Serving People In Need.

First Step Understand the problem: u More than 250,000 people live in poverty in the 18-county area served by Second Harvest North Florida. u More than 80,000 of those living in poverty within the 18 counties are children. u More than 100,000 people live in poverty in Duval County. u In America today, one in eight people is “food insecure” – which is defined as someone who does not have, or struggles to have enough to eat. One in six children are hungry. u 13% of the population in the Second Harvest service area live in poverty (higher than the national average of 12.5%). Understand how Second Harvest helps: u Second Harvest is the backbone of food relief in our community, leveraging federal, state and local government resources, and corporate, business, faith group and private donations to help feed as many hungry people as possible. u Second Harvest distributes tens of millions of pounds of food a year through a 33,000square-foot warehouse. u Second Harvest distributes food and meals in north Florida through more than 500 non-profit member agencies – providing food resources to larger organizations like the Sulzbacher Center and The Salvation Army, as well as smaller agencies like local soup kitchens and food pantries.

Next Step

Get Involved! There are three primary ways you can help end hunger here in your community and across north Florida:

DONATE TIME

It takes more than food and money to run Second Harvest North Florida — we need volunteers too! Second Harvest relies on thousands of volunteers every year to help our small staff. Our year-round projects offer rewarding ways for individuals and groups of all kinds to contribute their time, talents and resources. In addition, we often call upon volunteers for special events and other urgent needs. Volunteers are needed to help with food sorting, boxing and shelving. Individuals and groups are welcome to volunteer Monday-Thursday, 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. Groups of volunteers are also invited to participate in “Second Saturday” each month from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Due to the nature of the warehouse work environment, all volunteers should be at least middle-school age. All volunteers should wear closed-toe shoes. Volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. For any questions about volunteering, and to ensure that everyone’s time is used in the most productive manner, please schedule your volunteer hours in advance by contacting the volunteer coordinator or e-mail Volunteer@WeNourishHope.org Volunteer@WeNourishHope.org..

DONATE FOOD

Personal product donations (either as part of a food drive or as an individual donation), can be delivered to Second Harvest, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. A staff member will assist in unloading the donation and prepare a donation receipt for your records. Want to host a food drive? Get your office, school, church, team, community group, neighborhood or family and friends together and host a food drive! What food products are needed?* u Meals in a can u Canned meat/poultry u Canned tuna u Dry beans u Pasta/macaroni u Rice u Nonfat dry milk u Evaporated milk u Peanut butter u Canned veggies u Canned fruit u Oatmeal u Canned soup u Diapers u Baby food u Dry fruit Fore more information on food donations or hosting a food drive, contact the food donations coordinator, 904.730.8238 or e-mail Food@WeNourishHope.org.. Food@WeNourishHope.org * Please note that Second Harvest can only accept unopened, unexpired items. We also cannot accept “homemade” foods.

DONATE FUNDS

Financial gifts allow Second Harvest to help in the ways most needed at any given moment. As a member of Feeding America, the nation’s netnetwork of food banks, Second Harvest has access to an incredible network of national food manufacturers and distributors. Your financial contribucontributions allow us to transport donated food from around the country to the hungry people and families in north Florida. In fact, for every $1 donated we are able to provide food for six meals! Donat Donat-ing online at WeNourishHope.org is an instant, secure and easy way to support Second Harvest. Also, consider the following: Host your own Fundraiser Join the growing number of people who are standing together to help end hunger in our community by dedicating your next event to Second Harvest North Florida. Consider hosting a charity golf tournament or competing in a marathon while raising money in pledges for each mile completed. Other ideas include music concerts, chorus events, car washes or even Super Bowl parties. Allow us to help you develop any ideas you might have. For more information on how to donate funds, please contact the Advancement Office, 904.730.8281 or e-mail Donate@WeNourishHope.org.
