Dear LSU Alumni,
Agriculture is both Big Business and Big Science. In light of its importance to Louisiana, LSU decided to up our “ag game” by learning from those who do it best. So, we asked to take a closer look at the some of the best land-grant universities in the nation. Over the last 18 months, we have visited some of the country’s most prestigious and productive ag-based programs: the University of Georgia, the University of Kentucky, North Carolina State University, and the University of Wisconsin. This was so important that we brought our leadership team, together with board members, researchers, extension agents, elected officials, and donors so we could start to build a vision. We were treated to discussions, tours of state-of-the-art laboratories, demonstrations of precision agriculture, engagement with various state officials, growers, and commodity representatives, and presentations on innovative research collaborations that drive progress, profit, and impact for their states.
We learned a lot, which led us to much introspection. While no decisions have been cemented just yet, we have supreme confidence in our ability to become a Top 10 agricultural research enterprise. But to be successful in this venture, we will need to engage more academic departments that traditionally have not done much agricultural work. As an example, the new feral hog poison you may have read about was a joint effort of the LSU AgCenter and LSU chemistry department. The most growth potential lies in the biomedical sector. At Kentucky, we heard over and over that “food is medicine, and no state needs to embrace that mentality more than Louisiana. At Wisconsin, deep partnerships between computer science and agriculture were prevalent and led to efficiencies and gains for farmers and growers. And Louisiana’s strength in agriculture and energy sectors make carbon capture a sweet spot as the University moves to be a leader in the energy transition.
I’m glad to say that our vision is contagious. People are investing in the College of Agriculture and LSU AgCenter. The legislature and governor provided funding for repairs and new equipment at ag research centers around the state, renovations in three buildings on campus, and planning funds for a new agriculture innovation building. Through excellent work by the faculty, USDA awarded a $10 million grant in climate-resistant rice, and the AgCenter’s research awards are at an all-time high. Donors have been very generous, and we hope that this push for progress will further invigorate their confidence and investments.
What happens next? We keep our momentum going and determine the path that can fuel maximum success. We will need to engage more people and more tools in the effort. This is part of a mantra I hope you will see more of – through superior service to Louisiana, LSU will achieve national prominence.
Thank you for remaining engaged and supportive. I look forward to sharing more great news with you soon.
Sincerely,
William F. Tate IV LSU President

President and CEO MESSAGE
Spring 2023: Cheers, Congrats, and Crawdads
Hearty cheers and congratulations to our 2023 national champions – Kim Mulkey’s women’s basketball team and Jay Johnson’s baseball Tigers. What an exciting spring season for LSU fans everywhere! Flip to page 20 to read about Johnson’s win and enjoy a highlight recap of Mulkey’s record-setting run, which appeared in the Summer 2023 magazine.
As crawdad lovers know, crawfish boils mean lots of work as well as lots of fun! Our chapter crawfish boils are indeed a rite of spring, bringing together alumni and friends not only to enjoy crustacean camaraderie but also to support the Association’s scholarship programs.
Over the years, millions of dollars have been raised through ticket sales and auctions at these events to fund endowed scholarships for our students and faculty awards for chapter-named professors. See page 6 for our 2023 crawfish season wrap-up.
On behalf of proud LSU alumni around the world, congratulations to our May graduates. You are now official LSU ambassadors, and we hope you’ll connect with fellow alumni in chapters across the country to keep that special LSU spirit alive and show the world just how awesome LSU graduates are.
And now . . . it’s football season, another of our favorite times of year. We look forward to visiting with you at home and away games, as well at as other events this fall.
And, as always, we thank you for your steadfast support. We look forward to working with you in the coming months and years to enhance the Association’s programs and its support of LSU.
Geaux Tigers!

PHOTOS BY LSU ATHLETICS
Left: Sophomore third baseman Tommy White celebrates his walkoff homerun against Wake Forest to send LSU to the CWS Championship Series against Florida. –Right: The Tigers dogpile in celebration after defeating the Gators to win the 7th national championship in program history.
HE TIGERS TOOK GAME ONE OF THE BESTof-three series in dramatic fashion after LSU designated hitter Cade Beloso smashed a solo homer to take a 4-3 lead in the 11th inning. Florida bounced back to level the series with a 24-4 win which forced a decisive game 3.
Coach Jay Johnson’s squad started the finale on the wrong foot after starting Tiger pitcher Thatcher Hurd gave up a leadoff single and a two-run homer to the first two Gator batters he faced. Hurd shook off the rough start then settled into the game and was electric the rest of the way.
The sophomore pitcher didn’t allow another hit in six innings and his teammates did the rest from the plate. The Tigers quickly rallied using a six-run second inning and didn’t look back. Ultimately, they scored 18 runs on 24 hits in a complete rout of the Gators.
Johnson had high praise for his team after he became the first coach to win a championship prior to their third year.
“I really believe this will go down as one of the best teams in college baseball history,” the second-year coach said. “Eleven wins in the (NCAA) postseason, six of them against SEC teams. … I love these guys. I’m so proud of them. And they are very worthy champions.”
The Tigers’ year was a remarkable one. Johnson perfectly combined a core group of returning athletes with a star-studded transfer class which culminated in a
product that was one of the best teams the program has ever assembled. And that’s saying something.
LSU’s seven titles puts them second alltime, but they have been a force in college baseball since 1991 when legendary coach Skip Bertman won the program’s first championship. No other team has more than three titles in the same time frame.
The team’s 2023 motto – the powerhouse of college baseball – echoed that history, and the team looked poised to make some of their own after entering the season ranked as the consensus No. 1 team across all major preseason polls.
The Tigers started their campaign 24-3 including nine 10-run rule wins and three SEC series victories. The Tigers continued to roll through the regular season and didn’t show signs of weakness until May.
After poor pitching performances, LSU lost the No. 1 ranking for the first time as they dropped to No. 2 before a series loss to Mississippi State saw them tumble to
22 LSU Alumni Magazine | Fall 2023

No. 5. The Tigers bounced back to take two of three games in the final series of the regular season against Georgia before entering postseason play.
The up and down play continued in the SEC Tournament. After winning its first matchup against South Carolina, LSU fell in two straight contests to crash out of the tournament.
“There’s a lot to be gained from being here, and we’ll use that to get ready for the NCAA Tournament,” said Johnson after being eliminated from the tournament.
Ready they were.
The Tigers answered every challenge and methodically took care
of business through both the NCAA Regional and NCAA Super Regional outscoring their competition 48-17 to advance to college baseball's biggest stage – the College World Series – in Omaha, Nebraska for the first time since 2017.
LSU’s impressive form continued with a complete performance against Tennessee to open their CWS campaign with a 6-3 victory and advanced to face No. 1 overall seed Wake Forest.
Despite five scoreless innings by LSU starting pitcher Ty Floyd and a 2-0 lead, the Demon Deacons showed why they were one of the best teams in the country. A two-run sixth tied the contest before a rbi-single put Wake Forest on top for good and sent the Tigers into the elimination bracket.
For the first time in the NCAA Tournament, Johnson’s team had their
backs against the wall and were facing elimination. With their season on the line they fought back.
A 5-0 shutout win in a rematch with Tennessee eliminated the Volunteers and put Wake Forest back in the Tigers’ crosshairs. LSU has the unenvious task of winning two straight elimination games against the top-ranked team in Omaha.
After falling behind 2-1 early in the contest, a four-run third inning gave the Tigers a 5-2 lead. Neither side would alter the scoreline the rest of the way, which set up a final bout for a spot in the CWS Championship Series.
The game didn’t disappoint.
The matchup was an instant classic that saw 21 combined strikeouts in an 11-inning pitchers duel headlined by an impressive performance by LSU ace Paul Skenes who held the Demon Deacons scoreless for eight innings in a two-hit performance that included nine strikeouts.
The deadlock was finally broken when Tiger third baseman Tommy White blasted a slider over the leftfield wall for a walkoff win and sent his team into the championship series against Florida. From there, the rest was history.
“I'm always confident in the box,” White said in an interview with The Advocate. “I thought a heater was coming, but I was very amped up and I saw a slider that was up and I could get my bat to hit it.”
White’s home run is a reflection of what LSU has done throughout the entire season. They showed fight, tenacity, grit, responded to adversity, and performed when it mattered the most.
The 2023 Tigers are leaving behind an impressive legacy as one of the greatest LSU teams in program history. Only time will tell if Johnson is right about his team being one of the best ever, but one thing is perfectly clear.
The powerhouse of college baseball has never been stronger.

PAUL SKENES, DYLAN CREWS
THE 2023 LSU BASEBALL TEAM HAD AN INCREDIBLE YEAR
culminating with another title. They did so with a roster filled deep with talent, but throughout the special season, two players stood out from the rest – junior pitcher Paul Skenes and junior outfielder Dylan Crews.
After leading their team to a championship, both Tigers left Baton Rouge and made the jump to professional baseball, but they did it as two of the most decorated baseball players to ever don a LSU uniform. The dynamic duo collected numerous national accolades for their performance throughout the season and were both selected as consensus First-Team All-Americans.
Skenes served as LSU’s ace pitcher posting a 12-2 record with an ERA of 1.69, the second best in the nation. He struck out 209 batters throughout the year breaking the SEC strikeout record set by former LSU legend Ben McDonald 34 years ago.
The Lake Forest, California native, was named the Baseball National Player of the Year by D1 and Collegiate Baseball, Dick Howser Trophy recipient – given annually to the most outstanding player in NCAA Division I baseball, American Baseball Coaches Association National Pitcher of the Year, SEC Pitcher of the Year, First-Team All-SEC, and the College World Series Most Outstanding Player.
Crews stood out as the Tigers’ ball hawk in center field. He finished the year with a perfect fielding percentage committing no errors and was a vital part of the LSU batting order. The junior outfielder hit an SEC-leading .426 from the plate with 18 home runs, 110 hits, 100 runs, 71 walks and 70 RBIs and

Day one was historic as the first two names off the board were a pair of Tiger juniors, pitcher Paul Skenes, who went No. 1 overall to the Pittsburgh Pirates, and outfielder Dylan Crews, who was selected No. 2 by the Washington Nationals. This marked the first time in MLB history that two teammates were taken with the top two picks.
“I like to say pressure is a privilege,” Crews said in an interview with NOLA.com. “The transition seemed pretty easy as I got to LSU, and I feel like the transition is going to be pretty easy as I go and play for the Nationals.”
LSU last had a player drafted in the top-two when the Houston Astros added former standout shortstop Alex Bregman with the No. 2 pick of the 2015 draft. Skenes' selection was the first time an LSU player was taken No. 1 overall since 1989 when Tiger great Ben McDonald went to the Baltimore Orioles with the top pick that year.
Throughout the first and second day, the Tigers continued to hear their names called with a pair of pitchers, Ty Floyd (No. 38 overall) and Grant Taylor (No. 51 overall). Floyd struckout 17 batters in a 4-3 game 1 of the CWS Championship Series. Taylor did not play in the 2023 after undergoing Tommy John surgery prior to the start of the year, but was selected highly in the second round thanks to his performance in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball league last summer.
The next two LSU draftees were two infielders, first baseman Tre’ Morgan (No. 88 overall) and second baseman Gavin Dugas (No. 165 overall). Morgan and Dugas were critical to the team’s championship playing versatile roles throughout the season.
Before the final day ended, seven more Tigers were selected headlined by pitcher Riley Cooper (No. 391 overall) who earned a win and three saves during his squad’s College World Series run. The other LSU players drafted were pitcher Garrett Edwards (No. 333), pitcher Blake Money (No. 361), outfielder Brayden Jobert (No. 365), shortstop Jordan Thompson (No. 460), pitcher Javen Coleman (No. 490), and pitcher Christian Little (No. 576).
The selections showcase the talent that is being developed at LSU and Skenes doesn’t think that will change in the near future under Coach Jay Johnson.
“Coach Johnson is doing a good job in bringing the right people into the building, and I don’t think it’s done anytime soon,” said Skenes in an interview with NOLA.com. “I think it’s going to be a pattern of success for LSU baseball, and I’m really excited to see where the program goes.”

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM
National Title with White House Visit
26 LSU Alumni Magazine | Fall 2023
First Lady Jill Biden speaks to a crowded room during LSU women's basketball's visit to the White House in honor of the team’s first-ever national championship. The Tigers were joined by President Joe Biden and members of the Louisiana congressional delegation.
OACH KIM MULKEY and LSU’s women’s basketball team commemorated its recordsetting season in Washington, D.C., with visits to the United States Capitol Building and the White House.
The Tigers posted a 34-2 mark, including a LSUrecord 23 straight wins, en route to the first title in program history with a 102 point win over the Iowa Hawkeyes in the national championship game.
Mulkey’s squad was presented with the American flag that flew over the U.S. Capitol on the day it won the national championship by the Louisiana congressional delegation before arriving at the White House for a ceremony with President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden.
“We’re all here to celebrate a remarkable group of student-athletes,” said President Biden. “We are celebrating champions that captivated the nation with their talent, and their heart and their grit.”
During the ceremony, Mulkey and her players presented the president and first lady with custom LSU jerseys with the names “Potus” and “Flotus” inscribed on the back.
“Your game was everything that I love about sports. A team at the top of its game refusing to let anything stand in your way. As I watched, I felt the history of that moment,” said Jill Biden. “You didn’t just play basketball. You didn’t just make history. You showed us, girls and boys and women and men, what it means to be a champion.”
Women’s basketball became the fourth LSU sports program to celebrate a title at the White House after football, baseball, and track and field.
The visit to the White House was the fifth time that Mulkey has been to the executive mansion after meeting with Presidents George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump after her titles with Baylor (2005, 2012, 2019). She also met with President Ronald Reagan after winning a gold medal with Team USA in the 1984 Olympics.
“We are a proud state. I came back to the state of Louisiana to be a positive. Little did I know that I would get to coach this group of people,” said coach Mulkey of her team. “They came to our state and you are looking at the finest our state has to offer.”

Around Campus Making Homes Resilient, Sustainable, Affordable
By Elsa Hahne
For fifteen years, LSU AgCenter’s LaHouse has showcased stormresilient and sustainable home construction methods and materials that are customizable and cost-effective for Louisiana residents who live with significant risk of flooding and wind damage as well as rising insurance premiums and energy bills. LaHouse (Louisiana House) and its more than 250 educational exhibits have primarily benefited those who are able to visit in person. Now, with $500,000 in support from the Louisiana Legislature – part of historic funding for higher education in 2022 – LaHouse is elevating its ability to change how homes are built and rebuilt across the state to protect residents.
Outreach to storm-ravaged areas, including Houma, LaPlace, and Lake Charles, as well as new and more accessible online resources, are providing Louisiana homeowners, builders, and policymakers with the science-based tools they need to make the best choices for themselves
and for their families, businesses, and communities.
“LaHouse has been a tremendous source of info and research for us and is just a huge part of our business model,” said Isaac Scott, co-owner of Clare Homes, a high-performance homebuilder and startup in Lafayette. “We try to incorporate as much LSU building science as possible for our customers who want safe and healthy homes that will be resilient and save them a lot of money in the long run. This is why we want to work with LSU to drive innovation in home construction and help set standards for Louisiana moving forward.”
Carol Friedland, director of LaHouse and associate professor of biological and agricultural engineering at the LSU AgCenter, has a motto for her work with Clare Homes and other partners – Breaking the disaster cycle. “It’s all about providing people with the information and resources they need to get away from disaster-repair-repeat,” she said. “People naturally want to live on the coast and near water and there’s a way to do that sustainably, but not if we repeatedly build to fail.”

“A highperformance home showcase of solutions.”
Carol Friedland.
University of New Orleans, Friedland developed Flood Safe Home, an online platform that allows residents to evaluate their own flood risk and compare the cost of elevating a home against expected savings. She is also working to integrate similar tools to LSU AgCenter’s Louisiana FloodMaps online portal, which receives about 750,000 visits each year.
In Lake Charles, Friedland and LaHouse organized citizen focus groups to learn what kind of information residents needed the most. Blue tarps continue to dot the skyline in Lake Charles after the devastating hurricanes Laura and Delta in 2020. “People think it’s hopeless, like we’re going to get wiped off the face of the earth here, when that’s not true,” said Lake Charles resident and business owner Brenda Roberts. “Listening to Carol Friedland talk as a civil engineer about things we can do to prevent the damage from being as severe, that’s empowerment.”
A long-term partnership between LSU AgCenter’s LaHouse and now-Professor Emeritus Claudette Reichel, the Office of Community Development (OCD), and the Louisiana Housing Corporation (LHC) – state agencies working to ensure safe, sustainable, and affordable housing for everyone – led to a statewide policy change on resilient construction for lowincome housing.
“We’re double-incentivizing builders to realize our vision for the future of affordable housing in Louisiana,” LHC Executive Director Joshua G. Hollins said. “That vision started with LSU’s technical expertise and our strong partnership with LaHouse and OCD when we asked, ‘What is a resilient project?’ Our new standards and guidelines in the 2024 Qualified Allocation Plan are a direct result of what we’ve learned in recent years, and our top priority remains building homes that will withstand the test of time and Mother Nature for decades to come.”
Statewide building codes are also becoming stronger based on
LSU research. This year, all new and substantially damaged and improved buildings in Louisiana will be required to include at least one foot of freeboard. “This has the potential to be our greatest contribution,” said Friedland, who began sharing her research with the Louisiana State Uniform Construction Code Council Freeboard Task Force last year. “Without the support from the legislature, we wouldn’t have been able to generate and share enough data and results with the task force and code council to get to this point this quickly.”
Green Coast Enterprises CEO Jacquelyn Dadakis served with Friedland on the task force. As its technical committee chair, she said LaHouse’s work was instrumental to this year’s code changes.
“The current insurance crisis has given us a spotlight on the need for stronger building codes and more resilient construction, but in Louisiana and thanks to LaHouse, we’re already ahead,” she said. “Because of our work with LSU, we already had in place what we needed to change our building codes. LaHouse predicted this insurance conundrum years ago and helped push the conversation. LSU has been the leading voice and is helping us get to the other side of this crisis.”
Friedland’s team is now developing a virtual 3D model and virtual 3D tour of LaHouse where online visitors to the soon-to-be-revamped LaHouse website will be able to click links on every exhibit to get the same information as if they’d come in person.
“People from anywhere will soon be able to visit LaHouse without coming here, and to me, that’s a gamechanger,” Friedland said. “There are solutions; we just need to put the information out on a much larger scale.”

Capstone Project Helps Teen with Cerebral Palsy
For their senior capstone project, mechanical engineering seniors Mason Cambre, Rudy Stark, Bernard Robichaux, and Easton McGinn spent their last two semesters working with St. Lillian Academy in Baton Rouge to make improvements to Emerson Allen’s wheelchair.
Allen has cerebral palsy, a congenital disorder caused by abnormal development of the part of the brain that controls movement, muscle tone, or posture. To make life a little more comfortable for Allen, the team remodeled her wheelchair to help improve her posture and muscles.
As Allen was placed into her improved wheelchair, she surveyed the changes. When asked if she liked it, she replied, “I love it! Geaux Tigers!”

Vision Comes to Life
LSU mechanical engineering seniors Madeline Lemoine, Thomas Brinson, Andreas Kafkallides, and and Nils
Jernsletten worked with Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired (LSVI) faculty and students to bring their vision of a running apparatus to life.
The seniors’ vision was to have two poles set 180 feet apart with a zipline cable between them. An adjustable cord with a vest that the students could hook into would attach to the cable. The LSVI students would then be able to run from one pole to another without someone assisting
them. “We installed a zipline brake with a spring that compresses, and the other brake is a wooden box with a bell so when they hit it, the bell rings and they know it’s going to slow down,” Brinson said.
Local businesses provided services and time to help with the project.
On testing day, 10-year-old fifthgrader Brylee Williams ran toward the LSU seniors and the new running equipment, excited to race her friends. Williams can’t see shapes or color, but it doesn’t slow her down. “I love running,” she said. “When I would run by myself, I ran into things and busted my whole face running into a pole.”
Goldwater Scholars – Ogden Honors College juniors Kenedi Lynch and Rachael Coates were named 2023 Goldwater Scholars, an award that seeks to identify, encourage, and financially support students of exceptional promise in becoming the nation’s next generation of research leaders in STEM. LSU Women’s Basketball Reloads Roster with Star Transfers Ahead of Title Defense
When LSU Women’s Basketball begins the 2023-24 season, things will feel a bit different. For the first time in program history, they will start as reigning national champions.
In the second year of the Kim Mulkey era, the Tigers were unstoppable for the majority of the campaign. Then-sophomore Angel Reese led her team to a 34-2 record and their first title.
After an impressive year, a drop off would be expected as players moved on from the program, but despite losing stars like guard Alexis Morris and forward LaDazhia Williams, this year’s group has the potential to be even better.
ESPN’s Way-Too-Early Top 25 poll has LSU ranked No. 1 thanks to key transfers and the country’s best recruiting class. The Tigers added the top two players from the transfer portal – Hailey Van Lith and Aneesah Morrow.
Van Lith was the top-rated player in the portal and during three seasons at Louisville, she was one of the nation’s best players leading the Cardinals in scoring two of her three years and was a two-time All-ACC player.
“I am very familiar with the skillset and work ethic Hailey brings to Baton Rouge,” Mulkey said. “She will bring a wealth of experience and talent to our backcourt. Hailey has a fiery personality and passion for the game that Tiger fans will love!”
In addition to Van Lith, Morrow was another huge addition for the Tigers. She will add another scoring and rebounding threat to the LSU frontcourt. The Chicago native led the Big East in rebounding and was second in scoring and was the only player other than Reese to be ranked in the top-10 in rebounding and scoring last season.
“LSU’s rich history, support and passion for all sports teams caught my attention,” Morrow said. “The atmosphere on my official visit was electric, and the fan base is incredibly passionate about their team. I was drawn to this kind of environment because I’ve always dreamed about playing for a university that had that.”
In addition to the standout transfers, the Tigers are bringing in the best nation’s top-ranked recruiting class, headlined by the No. 1 overall prospect and reigning Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year, Mikaylah Wiliams, and the No 7 player, Aalyah Del Rosario
With all of the incoming players combined with those returning from last year’s championship squad, Mulkey has all of the pieces at her disposal to contend for a second-straight title and make the upcoming year something special.
If she can find the right combination by the time LSU tips off against Colorado to open the season, there’s only one thing to do.
Get your popcorn ready.

LSU Baseball Fans Shatter Jell-O Shot Challenge Record in Omaha
While LSU baseball won another National Championship in Omaha, its fans won a victory off the field in Rocco’s Pizza & Cantina Jell-O shot challenge.
Rocco’s annual challenge pits fans of the eight teams that make the college world series against each other. When purchasing a shot fans indicate which team they support and it goes to that squad’s tally.
In the end, Tiger fans purchased 68,888 shots, shattering the previous record of 18,777 set by Ole Miss in 2022. LSU’s final tally was nearly 73 percent of all shots sold and beat the other seven teams’ combined total of just 26,142.
The Tigers’ total was helped by two notable LSU Alumni, Todd Graves, CEO of Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers, and Gordon McKernan, Owner of Gordon McKernan Law Firm.
On June 19, Graves purchased 6,000 shots to help surmount Ole Miss’ record to set the record for most shots bought in the competition. The record didn’t stand for long. Before LSU baseball’s winner-take-all game three in the championship series, McKernan bought 8,888 “rally shots” to set a new mark.
“LSU baseball fans made history… multiple times,” the company said on Facebook. “Congratulations on the championship on the field and in the bar.”
Even with the competition complete, the effects would still be felt on campus. The cost of each shot raised money to support local food banks in Omaha and the cities

of the participating schools. In Baton Rouge, the donation went to the LSU food pantry whose mission is “to provide supplemental food to students who may experience hunger or food insecurity.”
The food pantry received a donation exceeding $60,000 which will go to support the organization’s efforts, which would be one of the largest the food pantry has received.
“This past year, the LSU Food Pantry processed over 21,000 requests and distributed 261,550 pounds of food,” Alison Paz, associate director, marketing and communications at LSU Campus Life, told the Advocate. “A donation of this size is tremendous in helping us to continue our operations and meet the needs of our students through continued access to food, supplies, and technology to keep the pantry running.”

Telling His Story: POW #1000
LifeRich Publishing
The Japanese captain said: “You will all die here.” The finality of his words was ominous, but they were the words of an enemy the American and Filipino captives had come to know as they were force-marched northward on the Bataan Peninsula. They took hope in the fact they had survived thus far. They had already witnessed the brutality of the Japanese guards on the infamous Bataan Death March as they bayonetted, shot, beheaded, or buried alive any who fell. But then came the camps where the POWs lived and walked with Death.
Such was J. C. Pardue’s nightmare. In Telling His Story: POW #1000, Janis Pardue Hill, as primarily a compiler and editor, provides the details of his story. This memoir covers both his entry into the US Army Air Corps and his experiences in, and after, World War II: the battle to hold Bataan;
the surrender of Bataan; the brutal, inhumane treatment on the Death March and in the POW camps; as a slave in Japan, and as a survivor determined to live a Christian life.
Most prominent among her father’s memories was the miracle of his Bible. Surviving a direct hit from a fragmentation bomb, confiscation in a POW camp, and disposal on a Hell Ship, his Bible always returned. His most treasured possession, that Bible came home with POW #1000, who attributed his survival to the faith acquired and absorbed from the weapon he considered the most valuable of all – his Bible.

What Comes Next
Self-Published
What Comes Next traces the formative experiences that shaped Ramona Kelly’s adult personality and ultimately gave her the strength to survive a life-threatening brain condition. Kelly explores the selfconsciousness that comes from growing up poor and fatherless in the outskirts of Shreveport; the determination to escape her circumstances and create a better life for herself; her oft-misguided quest for the love and attention that she never received from a father; and a frightening medical crisis that not only tested her endurance but also gave her an opportunity to examine her life’s choices, misdirection, achievements, and perhaps most importantly, her family history.
At the center of that history are four generations of women – the author, her mother, her grandmother, and her own two daughters – all of whom lost their fathers through desertion, divorce, or untimely death. With acute psychological analysis, Kelly explores the implications of this shared family trauma and its legacy.
74 LSU Alumni Magazine | Fall 2023 Tiger Nation
How the author structures this memoir is an essential part of what makes it eminently readable. It unfolds almost like a mystery novel: what is this painful “brain thing” with which the story opens? The worsening medical condition is revealed only gradually. Interlaced with the accounts of Kelly’s five hospital visits in thirty days, misdiagnoses, increasing pain, and life-saving neurosurgery are the memory chapters in which she reflects on her personal history and the people and events that brought her to this moment in her life. What Comes Next is unflinching in its honesty and deeply moving with its stories of female resilience in the face of tragedy.

No political leader is more closely identified with Louisiana State University than the flamboyant governor and U.S. senator Huey P. Long, who devoted his last years to turning a small, undistinguished state school into an academic and football powerhouse. From 1931, when Long declared himself the “official thief” for LSU, to his death in 1935, the school’s budget mushroomed, its physical plant burgeoned, its faculty flourished, and its enrollment tripled.
Along with improving LSU’s academic reputation, Long believed the school’s football program and band were crucial to its success.
Taking an intense interest in the team, Long delivered pregame and halftime pep talks, devised plays, stalked the sidelines during games, and fired two coaches. He poured money into a larger, flashier band, supervised the hiring of two directors, and, with the second one, wrote a new fight song, “Touchdown for LSU.”
While he rarely meddled in academic affairs, Long insisted that no faculty member criticize him publicly. When students or faculty from “his
school” opposed him, retribution was swift. Long’s support for LSU did not come without consequences. His unrelenting involvement almost cost the university its accreditation. And after his death, several of his allies –including his handpicked university president – went to prison in a scandal that almost destroyed LSU. Rollicking and revealing, Robert Mann’s Kingfish U is the definitive story of Long’s embrace of LSU.

A group of alt-right terrorists decides that now is the time – and New Orleans is the place – to make an explosive statement that will force the world to acknowledge the superiority of the white supremacist movement.
Disgraced former New Orleans homicide detective Starner Gautreaux is now a poorly paid rural sheriff’s deputy relegated to writing his weekly quota of speeding tickets in a sleepy South Louisiana parish. His mundane life is tedious and all too predictable until several unusual events occur that cause him to suspect something is seriously amiss. While the local coroner classifies the resulting deaths as accidental, Starner’s prior experience leads him to believe that not only are they homicides, but also that they signal something far more sinister.
Taut action bubbles up from the swamps of Louisiana to the hidden haunts of underworld bosses, from small-town life to urban grit, and from a high-speed highway shootout to a terrifying confrontation in the heart of the French Quarter. White supremacists seek to impose their will on a city swamped with carefree tourists, but Starner Gautreaux is determined not to let that happen.

Ensuring Student Success in STEM
LSU alumna Morgan Decuir (2015 BACH HS&E, 2018 MAST HS&E), of Erwinville, La., is a first-generation college graduate. She leads STEM education for kindergarten through fourth grade at Caneview K-8 in Port Allen, where she attended elementary and middle school. In 2022, she won the Shell Science Lab Regional Challenge, bringing more STEM learning opportunities to her community and to Louisiana students.
“The Shell Science Lab award has allowed me to purchase supplies to teach the Next Generation Science Standards and provide more hands-on learning opportunities for the five different grade levels that I teach,” Decuir said. “My district has invested in many different technology tools, such as Bloxels, BeeBots and Indi, which help students develop the critically important computational thinking skills they can build on in middle school, high school and college.”
Decuir uses Bloxels to teach students how to create backgrounds and characters using pixels and make them behave in different ways as part of a simple video game (think Space Invaders or Pac-Man). “We also just received a kit to learn how to create a mobile app, and this is just the first step,” Decuir said.
In her sunlit classroom, groups of first graders are rotating through stations. “This is an Osmo,” Decuir said, helping one of her students adjust the programming block for a character.
On the floor and on tables, other students are learning how to program large plastic bees on wheels to make them move in specific directions. “Those are Bee-Bots, and the students use them to create a sequence of code to program the bees to move from point A to point B,” Decuir said. “I use them to teach my students there are different ways to solve a problem. When a sequence of code doesn’t work, I’ll say, ‘Let’s think of a different way.’”
“Something else that’s really important to me is giving them the opportunity to show me they’re learning in different ways,” Decuir added.
One thing is non-negotiable in Decuir’s classroom, however. The students must work together in teams. “That’s something I learned as a student at LSU that helped me immensely throughout college,” Decuir said. “Working in teams helped me develop communication skills and gain lifelong friends.”
Being an educator wasn’t Decuir’s original plan. “Growing up, I always wanted to be an oncologist,” Decuir said. “That was my goal, but during my senior year of high school, I had to visit at least two programs as part of the kickoff event they held at LSU. I chose biological sciences and education. When I walked into Peabody Hall and saw the classrooms set up like at an elementary school and projects decorating the hallway, my dad asked, ‘You want to be a teacher?’ I responded, ‘Well, yes!’ Ever since that moment, I knew this is where I needed to be. I needed to be an educator.”
Before the start of the 2011 fall semester, Decuir joined the LSU Summer Scholars program, a bridge program for minority students. “Summer Scholars truly impacted my life,” Decuir said. “It helped me learn how to be a successful college student and allowed me to be part of a community. It set me up for success.”
After Summer Scholars, she became an LSU Ambassador. “Being an LSU Ambassador taught me how to help others,” Decuir said. “It really helped me learn how to do things for my school and for my community; how to present and represent.”

Lions, Tigers, and Bears
When Don Harris (1980 DVM) encountered a 922-pound tiger named Hercules, the awe factor was reduced by one fact: Harris knew Mike IV. “I was the caretaker for Mike,” said Harris, a Thibodaux, La., native who also cared for raccoons and snakes when he was growing up. Those early experiences, his time with Mike, and marine mammal work at LSU provided Harris a foundation that has served him well in South Florida.
“I came to Miami 40 years ago to develop an exotic practice,” Harris said. “The area was ripe for that. A few other people were also pioneering this field. I learned by winging it – I read a lot of physiology and anatomy. I applied traditional knowledge to exotics and I got lucky.”
The South Florida population and climate contributed a couple of resources that helped Harris. Subtropical birds, tigers, and an immense reptile population gave him plenty of work outside the more traditional dog and cat patient groups. “By 1990, I couldn’t see dogs and cats anymore,” Harris said.
Exotics gradually made their way into mainstream TV and movies. Before Harris met Hercules in a 58acre habitat in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, the main character from the 2004 film “Napoleon Dynamite” gave audiences a glimpse of his Tiger drawing. “Things exploded in the field about 10 to 15 years ago,” Harris said. “I was asked to lecture in North America, South America, and Japan. I was even surprised. A guy called from Jackson Hole, Wyo.” The Wyoming lecture required airfare, hotel, per diem and … a fly-fishing trip.
As Harris expanded his exotic animal practice, he also received additional responsibilities in veterinary organizations. The North American Veterinary Community named Harris president in 2008-2009, the first exotics veterinarian to be president of the NAVC.
More than a decade later, Harris has found field consulting opportunities for parks and zoos have exploded since the COVID pandemic. That has allowed Harris to do more field work and consulting abroad. What helped prepare Harris for the hectic work environment? “What I learned at LSU was how to learn,” Harris said. “Even with Mike, I learned how to explore situations I knew nothing about. I learned to just dig in and search for explanations.”
Because LSU did not spoon feed Harris information on exotics, he learned to find it on his own. That has worked well because Harris describes veterinary medicine as a field where you can never stop learning. “I still see things I have never seen before on a weekly basis,” Harris said. “There is always something new. I am 66 and thought I would be winding down. I have never been this busy.”
That workload included a day in October 2014 when Harris realized a 35-pound male African spurred tortoise named Lola had swallowed a turtle pendant. That case and many others remind Harris of the value he received from growing up in Thibodaux and heading to Baton Rouge. “South Louisiana educated me in a habitat of incredibly diverse wildlife,” Harris said. “More intriguing to me than the illnesses are the animals themselves.”

Hand-Written Letters?
Dana Dugas Rivera (1986 BACH HS&E) and longtime friend Amy Weinland Daughters appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show in May to discuss Daughters’ new book, Dear Dana: That Time
I Went Crazy and Wrote All 580 of My Facebook Friends a Handwritten Letter.
Through social media, Daughters learned that her friend’s son was battling cancer. She woke up in the middle of the night and felt called to write a handwritten letter to Rivera who, through time and distance, had become nothing more than several hundred other faces on her Facebook account. The two became pen pals, sharing things through the mail that they had never shared before.
The richness of the experience left Daughters wondering something: What would happen if I wrote all my Facebook friends a letter? A staggering 580 handwritten letters later, Daughters life would never be the same.

Island Tigers
By Katherine “Kat” Boccaccio
In the late 1970s, a group of LSU students – all members of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity (nicknamed “FIJI”) – hatched a plan: one day, they would transport their annual campus event called Fiji Island to the real island of Fiji. Two years ago, the planning to reconstruct the multiday tropical-themed party began in earnest. Bob Boccaccio (1981 BACH MCOM) and Bruce Bacon (1984 BACH ENGR), along with their wives Katherine Jensen Boccaccio (1981 BACH MCOM) and Cindy Cary Bacon (1983 BACH H&SS), formed a reunion committee to hold “Fiji Island On the Island” at the Marriott Momi Bay in Nadi, Fiji, in May.
Eleven LSU Phi Gamma Delta members – ranging in age from 63 to 71 – and their wives flew from six U.S. states to Fiji for a reunion week filled with daytime excursions, evening Happy Hours and, of course, plenty of reminiscing. The group swapped stories about how they would transform 21 Fraternity Lane each April into a tropical island, bringing in truckloads of sand to create beaches
and lagoons, and erecting thatched huts that towered over the three-day festivities. The annual event, along with many other Greek parties on campus, was disbanded in the 1990s, but for this group the memories hadn’t faded one bit.
Three Fiji “kings,” each crowned during Fiji Island when they were students, attended the reunion –John Mundinger (1976 BACH A&D) David Stevens (1981 BACH SCI), and Bruce Bacon.
Couples who dated as LSU students and attended Fiji Island together used the Pacific Ocean backdrop to re-create party pics taken some 40 years prior.
The group wore matching “Fiji Island on the Island” shirts throughout the reunion stay, a Phi Gamma Delta flag flew from an overwater villa, and several LSU flags made the trip as well. The group received a shout out from the LSU baseball radio announcers during the LSU-Georgia series for listening to the game from Fiji. And, the travelers were regularly heralded at the Marriott and during excursions as “Louisiana State University.”
LSU was well represented all week long!
